One Thing the Federal Government gets Right
[Dave in Fla]

I don't know about you, but as we move into 2023, I'm pretty burned out on the constant conflict and trench warfare of politics. I think we can all agree that our government "By the People, and for the People" is pretty much not, and may never be again.

But I wanted to point out one thing that the Federal Government does still seem to get right, at least for the moment. I took a long weekend in the middle of December to fly out to Las Vegas and take a tour of several of the national parks. This post might be an excuse to show some of my vacation photos, but it was a positive experience to cap off a year of negativity.

Zion.JPG

Zion National Park

I've been going to national parks since I was a child. I grew up in a home where money was pretty tight, and vacations to places like Yellowstone were an economical option. On this trip I got to visit Zion and Bryce, two parks I have never been to, and also return to the Grand Canyon, which I haven't seen in over 40 years.

There were a couple things that struck me, because they hit sensitive nerves. First the cost of entry is higher (even accounting for inflation) than when I was a kid, but the price was still fair and affordable. I wouldn't expect to enter parks for free, given the cost to maintain them. But compared to other entertainment options, they are still a bargain.

Second was the lack of "messaging" which I expect from everything that the woke deep state controls. I expected to see a strong push on environmentalism and climate change in the visitor centers and merchandise. Instead, everything was played straight with minimal preaching. A focus on litter was the only thing I noticed, and I didn't see a single item related to global warming. Also the merchandise for sale was top quality and well made.

Grand.JPG

Grand Canyon National Park

The third thing was a comparison to parks not being run by the NPS. I also went to Antelope Canyon and Monument Valley, both of which are run by the Navajo. I understand that the Navajo aren't a wealthy tribe, so they don't have the same resources the NPS has. But there was a clear distinction between the facilities and park maintenance between the two sets of experiences. One of the advantages of the National Parks is that the experience is generally consistent and pleasant. It was easy to see where privately owned parks could have a wide range of guest experiences.

Bryce.JPG

Bryce Canyon National Park

All in all, I had a great time visiting some of the parks in the Mountain West, especially compared to the time on either end spent in Las Vegas. I very much preferred the quieter experience to the over-the-top commercialism. The National Park Service continues to do a good job.

13 Of course government has success with national parks. It's one of the few government functions where the job is primarily leaving something alone to be what it wants to be.

16 With regard to national parks, the government doesn't do anything to the area, other than put in a few roads and hire tour guides.

I think the less the government does, they better off we all are, and a lesson should be taken from that.

17 Some national Parks are warranted, but the Fed Government owning 45% of the land in California, is NOT what the Founders intended.

I note that on the East Coast, there are very few large forest fires... yet West of Denver? Yearly... why? If you personally own the land, you make sure it aint gonna burn down... Fed Gov owned land? They don't care.

19 Nationally managed lands are fantastic, except for the exclusion of any extractive industries in pursuit of a "zero impact" policy and the subsequent massive fires that result from mismanagement and intentional neglect. Apparently stretches of wilderness burnt to sterility is "natural" where selective cutting is not.

But meth sales are up in the collapsed mill towns, so someone is profiting.

37 I agree. I've got a Jackson Hole ski and snowmobile trip booked for a week in January. Been going there for years. It's truly magical there, especially for a New York City boy like myself.

One of the best lines I heard was the first time I was there, with a Pinay girl I took for her birthday. Needless to say she wasn't around snowy mountains much. We were on the snowmobiles out deep in Yellowstone, and she was amazed. She said "this looks like Narnia." I've used that line to this day.

41 Umm, if there is a lack of idiotic "climate" propaganda in national parks, I'm astounded and puzzled. It certainly isn't lacking in other NPS properties (like national monuments).

One particular example were the signs about "climate" and "disappearing glaciers" at Glacier National Park. Apparently, once a particular glacier where the idiotic sign was placed started growing again, the sign was simply removed, without comment (somebody here surely knows this story and/or has been there?).

And Dave in 2013 the Park Service was the most jarring and ridiculous of the federal entities during the "shut down" - blocking view overlooks on public roads at parks in the west, and my favorite, spending extra $$ to rent barriers to block access to (the normally open, un-manned) WWII memorial in DC, so that aged veterans on their one trip to see it could not get in.

That last outrage, for me, has served as my marker for when the civic culture was shown to be beyond hope (and recall it was all to prevent delay in implementing a disastrous law that financially devastated millions and greatly further damaged American medicine, possibly beyond repair).

I hear you about the Navajo, but at least here in PA I prefer the state-run national parks to the fed ones. our state does a great job and during COVID they kept everything pretty much open which was nice. the fed ones were "closed." we also have a few private parks (run by conservancies you can join) and those are the absolute best.

FedGov isn't the only option and they have downsides too - as in the nasty government is apt to close them in punishment.

88 I won a permit to the Wave in Arizona for March on my first try. A major bank or financial conglomerate, can't remember which, runs the lottery to get these permits.
The application fee is 9 dollars. Doesn't sound like much does it? Except you don't get it back whatever the outcome, and some people have been applying every month for years without winning.
Money doesn't even go to maintaining anything. You still pay a separate fee for the actual permit if you win the lottery. And there's no lt actually a real trail there anyway! There's nothing to maintain.

Corporate grift finds itself well embedded in the NPS too.

If you are able, enter from the east side. You'll see just a wee bit of the Painted Desert in the distance before entering the Canyon land. Then once you're inside the grounds of the Canyon, there are several vantage points to stop and view on your way to the "main" spot at the south rim. Most people seem to enter from the south and only hit the one vantage point view. It's stunning, no doubt -- but it's not the only place to view the majesty of the Canyon. Also -- try to be there for a long time so you can experience different locations / amounts of sunlight. The colors of the Canyon walls change a lot throughout the day.

100 I think your view of NPS is reasonable, but you might shift it some if you looked under the hood a little closer.

It is regrettable but entrance fees go to the "general fund" (or they used to anyway) and the various parks would grovel for crumbs in return from our overlords.

Should their be entrance fees? I don't think so. Illegal aliens don't pay one entering US soil, and they roam the whole damn country. It's just antiquated custom, a legacy from a long ago vanished time.

Their campsite reservation and back country permit system is completely FUBAR as well. I think they have outsourced it to a for-profit private contractor. So we get to pay twice, over and over. There are computerized "Bot" programs to try and score coveted campsites and reservations.

Even decades I noticed lots of "no shows" that people had reserved months in advance.

The trips always ended at the Kellogg's La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club in San Diego, where DanMa'am's family stayed for August. Sometimes she made the whole trip but usually she flew out for a week because she didn't get a month off. Fun fun times.

Aside from the creepy replicas of the Oval Office and the Lincoln Bedroom, he keeps a replica of Monica Lewinsky's jizzrag dress in that place.

I... I just can't even. You know he wears that thing in the "Oval Office" when it's cigar time with Big Kev, right?

107 I'm reading through the police affidavit RE the Idaho student killers and I'm a bit worried.

One phrase in particular stands out. The Idaho state lab later located a single source of male DNA (suspect Profile) left on the button snap of the knife sheath.

Is this just a term of art meaning they matched the DNA to the suspect? If so, it's very awkward. The way they worded it, it sounds like they could only confirm the sample came from a male.

If that's the case, the proof they have the right guy seems damn thin. They've got latent shoe prints that appear to be Vans, which are extremely common. They've got video of a very common car. They've got a witness who ran into the suspect in the house past four in the morning and who was probably very surprised and likely didn't get a clear look at him.

Maintain land that (for the most part) takes care of itself, keep the utilities going, police the unruly. That's most of what the Interior Department does with national parks.

Does anyone remember the weeping and wailing when the Reagan Administration ended "free" access to national parks, imposing user fees?

Then she gets announced and suddenly there's a section labeled State Trooper Scandal and it was some story about a relative that they were trying to tie back to her. It was there within minutes. I know because I had been watching the page. This is 2007 mind you.

155 It's not a Fed park, but Palo Duro Canyon State Park in TC, near Amarillo, is gorgeous -- the second largest canyon in the lower 48 states, I think. The Comanche Indians used it for winter quarters. Hot even in late May, but dry at least. The closest town, Canyon, has a branch of Texas A & M University, plus the usual places that serve the students. When I went in 2014, there was at least one used bookstore. (Didn't have air-conditioning. I thought that was insane.)

Fun fact: Georgia O'Keeffe taught at the Normal College there in 1916-1918, and painted watercolors of the landscape.

185 There was a brief government 'shutdown' 2013 (I think), near Halloween, while I was touring Salem, MA. O & Joe's administration ordered all federal park and recreational sites shutdown, which included the Salem Marine National Historical Site.

Worse was that every public bathroom associated with the federal sites was padlocked, ergo touring became a nightmare. (However, after a lot of confusion, the City of Salem put a Spotapot or two on its main street until federal services were restored.)

The field 'workers' (which were few & far between in the past) for the Department of the Interior, National Park Service, coupled with many volunteers, do a very nice job.

199 Near Albany, there is a a state preserve known as the Albany Pine Bush. In nature, it is supposed to catch fire to control the underbrush and allow the pines to thrive.

Well. since the fire department puts out the nature-caused fires when they occur, they have to have controlled burns to control the underbrush. They set the pine bush on fire.

Going through the Pine Bush is the NYS Thruway. Controlled burns produce a shit-ton of smoke which reduces visibility and forces the shutdown of the Thruway.

In short, a controlled burn typically isn't.

282 To my astonishment, the local national monument in question even has a military history display (focus, WWII), as the place got beefed up coast artillery infrastructure after Pearl Harbor. And not even a reference to Japanese-American internment - well, so far.

Oh, speaking of that, the national monument at the Manzanar internment site in east central CA, at least last time I visited, needs a commissar to come through and clean up some loose ends.

If you actually read the explanatory info in several of the locations - and think, even just a little - you'll realize that the absurd plaque on the boulder out front (with an outrageous statement cribbed directly from the farcical report of the 1980s commission) is, well, disconnected from the history and absurd. "Hey, mom, if the people could sign loyalty oaths and then move to work in defense industry or the young guys enter the military, how was it based on 'racism'? Did their 'race' change when they signed a loyalty oath?".

I worry about the younger generation, mainly males. What the hell do they do with their days? At Marsh Creek I see a lot of babes in thongs out on paddle boards. Not a young man in sight.

bonhomme,
The data in the affidavit is more than enough for both search warrants and an arrest warrant. The Van shoe print was primarily to indicate the likely path of the suspect which tied in the believed entry and exit of the crime scene. So, you have repeated sightings via cell phone of the crime area down by Kohlberger, evidence that a white Elantra was leaving teh vicinity of the crime at high speed shortly after it happened and lacked a front license plate which both Idaho and Washington require but Pennsylvania does not. Kohlberger changed his car registration five days after the crime to WA, his DNA was found on the snap to the knife shealth in the deceased home and that shealth corresponded to the believed weapon causing death, Kohlberger's cell phone indicated going past the scene of the murders the day after (common among serial murderers), and someone matching the approximate weight and height of the suspect with bushy eyebrows was seen entering and leaving the house.

More than enough for probable cause and the police are not required to put forth all evidence they have until trial.

If it's personal against McCarthy, that may be unfair (it's not because of his actions in 2022, but whatever), but that means that he literally does not have the ability to manage the caucus. He literally cannot do it because he has a sizeable minority of his caucus that are willing to publicly embarrass him repeatedly when nothing else is going on in the political world.

If it's about policy, then the GOPe replacing McCarthy with anyone else won't work because any replacement will just advance the same policies.

It is and because there is little sign that his dad was present during the murder virtually across the country while Kohlberger was, it makes it likely enough to sustain an arrest warrant. Corresponding with the arrest warrant and search warrants, the police can now formally swab the accused cheek for matching DNA rather than just familial DNA.

All true. I think they have the right guy. I hope they have the right guy. My concern is the evidence I see in the affidavit is thin and if they don't have more, they could be fitting the evidence to a suspect in order to close a high profile case.

Specifically, everyone keeps saying they have his DNA on the snap. The phrasing in the affidavit is odd and makes me doubt they actually have a good match. Without the DNA, the rest of the known evidence is hardly unassailable.

Even without the DNA, there is sufficient evidence to arrest Kohlberger. I read a lot of warrants for what I do and inartful discussion often happens when the police are trying to be truthful but fuzzify a bit as well. Notice the second page is redacted and there is probably something there as well about the nature of the wounds in the deceased and defensive wounds.

Apparently what happened is that the police used the DNA sequencing to compare with genealogy websites to identify the familial markers to narrow the suspect pool. They then confirmed that familial match with the trash obtained from the household--the arrest allows them to take an official sample to compare with the crime scene and would be able to rule out the father specifically from being guilty of the crime. That is why you don't get the usual 99.9999999 etc with an exact match is because familial dna is being compared with the sample on the knife sheaf.

Yes, Zions / Bryce / Arches / Canyonlands / Capitol Reef are awesome. They bring in a great deal of tourist money for the state, actually--especially Zions, Bryce, and Arches. All three are world tourist destinations.

But it's the national monuments that take up hundreds of thousands of acres that is annoying.

Look, Southern Utah is a barren alien wilderness. People have a hard time living there due to lack of water. Amazing scenery!

But something like 70% of Utah is "federal land% which is second only, I think, to Nevada. And Nevada is just a few towns on the outskirts of a massive barren inhospitable wasteland, so no one cares as long as they run a couple of cows on it.

Living here is different than visiting!

363 The National Parks Service does a fine job of administering national parks, but falls apart when it steps outside its lane, such as when it designed the memorial to Flight 93.

364 Thing about National Parks, though, is that we are still and forever adding to them. Every man-jack who can show that some aborigine walked across some turf 200 years ago now petitions for it to become part of the National Parks system.

I propose that, if some outfit wants to have a tract of land added to the Federal Parks & Preserves system, they should have to include in their proposal an equal tract of land elsewhere that would then be released from National Parks & Preserves.

As a Westerner who kinda resents the Feds taking over more and more and more land, this land is then closed off to anything productively useful. The Feds have a big enough chunk of the western States; they don't need more land to manage, since they're not doing all that hot of a job managing what they already have.

366 If you think the NPS is doing a good job, I have a visit to Appomattox for you. You can see NPS neglect in all its glory. Threadbare, moldy facility and buildings. An attempt to drag slavery into the site that ended the war that ended slavery. The worst was a major downplaying of the terms offered by Grant, which did a great deal to starting the nation to heal. You can have your pretty scenery; as long as this is the approach to our heritage, the NPS can go to h*ll.

367 The U.S. National Park Service oversees land with NO VOTERS and NO VOTERS TO TAX. This land has existed in a natural state for eons and as such nothing to do and/or fuck up. But if you own land with for instance a stock pond that gets runoff from a boundary with one you'll find out right fuckin quick about the park "service". Until YOU live this, they're off destroying the rest of this Country - what's left of it. We have a 10 acres near one where some of the "parkies" are aging dopers/leftists damn near or at retirement age. When they're gone enter the enviro-rayciss™ graduates.

369 So this reminds me of the 3 Ken Burns' series that I actually like:
3) National Parks
2) Baseball
1) Civil War

The Civil War series has to be my absolute favorite, only because of Shelby Foote's narration.

371 > Dave in Fla, many of the State parks in the West are very good too.

...and since he mentioned operating out of Vegas for this trip, Valley of Fire State Park isn't far out of the way if you're heading toward Zion. Quite a bit to see in there; it's been a shooting location for more than a few movies as well.
