Turquoise ice formations at Lake Baikal, Russia

View of the earth from a space station.

Another view of the earth from space. Though I think this one might be a high-def simulation.

Naughty dog.

Boldly stupid biker commutes in the Death Lane.

Cat lives boldly.

Sound off, because it's annoying: Guy gets off the subway, or "Tube" for us London sophisticates, at one stop, then boldly races to try to catch it at the next one. Kind of interesting. The stations are obviously not that far apart.

stationtostation.jpg

Woman feeds strawberries to a giant brown bear. That's not the bold part. The bold part is that she does this while lying on a bearskin rug.

Boldly dance with a horse like nobody's watching.

Bold dog says, "That's not a knife -- now that's a knife."

The original TV ad for a show you probably recognize. A show which boldly went.

Baikal definitely on the list. And the Trans-Siberian, end to end. Or at least to Khabarovsk, have done from there to Vladivostok.

They must have welded rails by now. The old Soviet trains were not just the nicest/cleanest public spaces in the country (and wider/bigger than western trains), they didn't have welded rails, so you had the clickety-clack, which just seemed so appropriate as the lakes and birch forests glided by in the moonlight.

Then there was the leg where our car had Stalin pod-stakainiks (little metal glass holders for your tea glass). Tried to swipe one but it got out of hand and we all had to surrender them as we left the car.

Old ice outgasses the air that makes new ice white. If it is really cold or really compressed it can make large crystals that absorb the longer frequencies of light letting blue escape.

Lynda Carter was an absolute smoke show but a fairly flat and generic actress.

Every episode had a fairly preposterous setup and uniformly terrible acting.

Also the show suffered from not being able to attract quality B-Actors of the time although Debra Winger got her start on the show as Wonder Girl.

116 Not sure what hydrogen bonds have to do with it but if density is m/v and mass (m) remains constant but volume (v) increases doesnt that mean the fraction is smaller? Then ice is less dense than water so it floats.

*takes another bite of the crayon*
Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at December 29, 2022 08:11 PM (TgNpw)

the bonds contract and the mass of water becomes more dense as the molecules get colder, down to about 34-36 F, below that they Hydrogen bonds actually expand making the volume of the ice greater and the density lower. The volume increase which is why pipes burst and pepsi cans explode in your freezer

It is the partial bond between the electropositive hydrogen atom on one water molecule (H𔔔) to the electronegative oxygen atom on another water molecule. This is a fragile bond, but the lower the temperature the more it affects the property of water.

You don't see it a lot in gaseous water (water vapor). But in ice it can be seen and measured with the right scientific instruments.

#Pele, the man with a thousand goals and three World Cups, died Thursday, December 29 morning of cancer at age 82. A death that puts an end to the career of one of the greatest players in the history of soccer.

Pele's story was remarkable: he was born only 52 years after #Brazil abolished slavery in 1940 and rose to become one of the world's biggest-ever sports stars.

#Pele was born to a modest family and began playing football when he was just barely 15. He would soon take the world by storm and change the game as we know it today.

The standard-bearer of “the beautiful game” had undergone treatment for colon cancer since 2021. #Pele had been hospitalised for the last month with multiple ailments and died of organ failure.

Quantum mechanics is a tad specialized.

In the lab one day my lab mates and I were conversing about putting uranium atoms as weights on extended bonds. We were all organic / inorganic types. A passing P-Chemist schooled us with the P-Chem calculations to show we were stupid and uneducated. It showed us how strong chemical bonds could be. Twas a thing of beauty. And mostly over my head.

that is the standard gauge, the previous narrow gauge wasn't as wide. It might be the width of two horses but I don't think it was because of some holdover from the Roman empire

I think for one thing that they are trying to say that slavery had been outlawed within human memory, but he was still able to become an acclaimed sportsball player.

What is odd to me is that for literally thousands of years, slavery had no particular racial connotation. Probably 90% (or higher, it is not really even discussed or tracked- the romans did not think like that) of the Roman slaves were of some sort of Caucasian extraction. They were either from newly conquered regions or descendants of slaves, or people who could not pay their debts.

262 26 Water is very slightly blue in colour. Condensed water (ice) increases the amount of colour seen due to much higher density.

Posted by: NaCly Dog (u82oZ) at December 29, 2022 07:48 PM (u82oZ)
----
Water is condensed water vapor (steam). Ice is contracted water. The water molecule absorbs the red and infra-red wavelengths in white light so the resulting complementary color is blue. When ice forms, the molecules go from disordered to ordered and from occupying less space to occupying more space - hence ice is less dense than water and floats. This is one of the 'fortuitous' anomalous properties of water, thank goodness.
(end of Physical Chemistry lesson)
Now I would like to see this explained in POC/minorities Science.

To suggest that we can learn anything about the simian nature from a study of man is sheer nonsense. Why, man is a nuisance. He eats up his food supply in the forest, then migrates to our green belts and ravages our crops. The sooner he is exterminated, the better. It's a question of simian survival.

Some will claim that glass is not a solid, but rather a supercool liquid. But ice is undeniably a solid. There are, however, many types of ice at different densities, depending on how it is frozen. It's all still h2o, but with different internal crystalline structures.

283 Wasn't glass called an... amorphous solid? I seem to recall there was some argument over that one. Trying to make an argument that glass 'flows' based on window pane thickness in very old buildings. This was counter-argued by the glass starting out at a different thickness at the top vs the bottom because of how glass was made previously by being spun on a turntable to flatten it out into a thin, flat shape. The spinning meant that there was a thickness gradient from the center (thinner) to the edges (thicker.)

313 From wiki (so you know it's true /s):

Glass is an amorphous solid. Although the atomic-scale structure of glass shares characteristics of the structure of a supercooled liquid, glass exhibits all the mechanical properties of a solid.[6][7][8] As in other amorphous solids, the atomic structure of a glass lacks the long-range periodicity observed in crystalline solids. Due to chemical bonding constraints, glasses do possess a high degree of short-range order with respect to local atomic polyhedra.[9] The notion that glass flows to an appreciable extent over extended periods of time is not supported by empirical research or theoretical analysis (see viscosity in solids). Though a material viscosity on the order of 1017–1018 Pa s can be measured in glass, such a high value reinforces the fact that glass would not change shape appreciably over even large periods of time.[5][10]

Assuming it isn't a closed system but instead the vacuum pumping system is expelling the 'vapor' out of the system: then the molecules of water leaving the surface of the liquid, absorb energy (heat) from the liquid. That energy becomes kinetic energy and the molecules move from a higher pressure (the vessel) towards a lower pressure (the vacuum source). Heat in the remaining liquid becomes less and less, so liquid becomes colder. This is what happens also when freeze-drying except it is ice that is supplying the vapor and not liquid water.
Now explain all that using POC 'Science'.
