  • ChatGPT is artificial general intelligence for the easily impressed. (Bleeping Computer)

According to one person on Twitter, this is all the tech world has been talking about for days. (They were complaining that the New York Times was only talking about Elon Musk, as if the New York Times could cogently report on a new generation of language inference engine.)

I'm less impressed by ChatGPT than Stable Diffusion, because while Stable Diffusion does something I'm bad at - it's bad at it too, and has no understanding of what its mistakes are, but it can generate interesting results that I cannot in any reasonable time frame - while Stable Diffusion does something I'm bad at, badly, but frequently better than I can do, ChatGPT does things I'm good at, badly, and also cannot learn from its mistakes.

If you're bad at writing very simple code or bullshit term papers for some mandatory general studies class, ChatGPT might be just what you need. But for the most part, it's a toy.

The internet is already awash with awful AI-generated sites that clog up search results. This will only lead to more of them, though they might be slightly less awful.

  • I say it's a toy for the most part because if there's one thing you'd expect a language inference engine to understand, it's language and if this example is real it sort of does. (Maximum Effort)

It makes some mistakes, because at a surface level it's still using probabilistic pattern matching, but when carefully coached the results are something that an imaginative ten-year-old might come up with.

Which is not a slam because one of the great early demonstrations of AI was about the level of a four-year-old.

  • As mentioned on my blog earlier, I'm getting a new server cluster. Two 5950X systems with 128GB of RAM and a ZFS storage server with 120TB of disk, all connected with 10Gb Ethernet.

This is way more than I currently need but the post-Black Friday sale price was too good to pass up. I'm basically upgrading my three existing servers (one of which is dead) to twice the size for about another $10 a month.

They'll all be in one place, which is great because I get that super fast private network and can set up some degree of clustering and redundancy.

So long as that place doesn't catch fire.

But how likely is that to happen again?

I can't recall who said it, obviously a genius, that commenting at at AOS is like having one drone and 100 remotes. We won't have reasonable elections until we clean up the voter rolls, go back to voter ID, and get rid of mail ballots. One interpretation of cleaning up the voter rolls could be giving all the residents in these corrupt Democrat blue state counties 48 hours to clear out and after that are sent in 10,000 D9 graders.

20 I can't tell if SBF is the most trusting idiot on the planet, or just the biggest idiot.

I'm guessing the guy had some decent tech skills/ideas, and people at the CIA seeded him this whole venture, so they can use it for themselves and friends. Now SBF thinking he's this genius, runs with the plan and adds his enviro world savior bs to it. Then as they go on the plants from these agencies would say "hey do this or that," and he would, getting his little taste while others got their big taste.

But the trusting or idiot party comes in now. Why hire a Clinton connected lawyer? If you have something that (probably) could hurt the Clintons and their friends, you don't hire their lawyer. That's how you get all the dirty on them erased, leaving just evidence about you, eventually ending with you being suicided 32 times in the back. Does he actually think these lawyers addres looking out for his own good? And that his "clients" are his friends? Or is he just so dumb he does what he's told?

I expect to learn no answers to this, as they're all going to get away with it. Dem crimes are never punished since we live in a joke of a country now.

Posted by: AnnaS at December 07, 2022 04:36 AM (FnSbk)

GA, AZ and others with Republican leaders could have cleaned up the process, but they are all shit scared of being called racist or trying to suppress voters.

Republicans need to stop playing this game Democrats put out for them. Republicans introduce meaningful election reform to protect voting, Democrats call them names, and Republicans cave. Meanwhile Democrats clearly disenfranchise voters (that entire AZ bs) and do everything to steal elections, and when caught their response, and that of their online trolls is like "haha, cry harder MAGAt, lolz"

They rub their election theft in our faces while we're supposed to call everything clean and fair elections, F'them. Redman leaders need to make republican states have the strictest voting laws. 1 day voting only, with strict reasons for mail in voting. And if yhe Democrats scream "disenfranchisement" or try to boycott states, the governors and legislators should tell them to F'off and cry harder.

I'm still using Photoshop CS6 and it runs perfectly fine on Windows 10 and 11. The only reason I needed a new video card is AMD updated their graphic card software and it blew up CS6. In a hail Mary attempt to keep CS6 running, I found a Nvidia 1030 video card in this store that buys Amazon casts off for $20 bucks and it worked. 41 The J6 committee is going to issue criminal referrals before this congressional term shuts down in about a week. I'm taking that to mean they're going to unleash the DOJ once again on Donald Trump to put him in prison for the rest of his life. It is no accident that all these financial trials, the special prosecutor, the raid on Mar-a-Lago, and now this are happening in the run-up to the 2024 election. There is a real possibility that Trump could win the nomination and be facing multiple indictments and simultaneous trials. And just like that, Joe Biden is trying to put his political opposition in prison.

If you don't specifically need Photoshop, Affinity Photo is very good, and a one-time purchase (currently on sale for around $40) rather than a subscription. Free upgrades for several years too. They have design and publishing apps as well. For video editing you can pick up Vegas Pro dirt cheap from Humble Bundle right now.

I'm hoping some governors see the balls on DeSantis and follow suit, seeing how you won't turn into a pillar of salt if you dare to reject Democrat rules.

Maybe if Harmeet or Zeldin can get the RNC nod they'll start pushing these election issues.

And then hopefully, by some grace of God, photos of McConnel, Lindsey and some 12 year olds surface and they get hauled off to prison, and we can replace them with real leaders.

At some point you'd expect Republicans would start realizing that they are not losing elections, just losing the ballot counting, and enough get pissed about it to do something.

I agree completely. I have fussed around with the new versions and when I go back to my CS6, I don't feel like I'm using really old software for a second. A bit of understanding how channels work, proper white balance, how to gin up proper masks, how to make smart sharpening moan and howl, well, the end results are identical to the subscription software.

I have used Affinity and I found it to be good for its target audience. And that you can get a perpetual license and updates. What's there not to love?

I will never stop using Photoshop because of the raw file processing, smart objects, how it handles files bigger than 2 GB, it's stitching capabilities, plugins and so on. I think I'm kind of the exception. I'm pretty far out the weeds with digital photography.

64 56 Wow, that is cheap as hell. Slightly older version, but i dont think there were major updates since then.

Yeah, there's a number of publishers (Magix, Corel, a few others) that regularly put last year's versions of their software out there for about 90% off retail. There's only a couple of things I absolutely need the latest version of (like PyCharm from JetBrains, which I use all day every day for work). For everything else, I'm happy to save the money and get a version that's been tested for a year.

Never heard of the website, I'll assume it's legit since you're suggesting it.

Yep, it's legit. It used to be even better, but then it got bought by some conglomerate. Still a great site.

You need flour to bake bread. You have a sack of flour in the garage. When you get there, you find that the flour is at the bottom of the sack, but that somebody emptied a couple of boxes of dishwashing detergent on top of it. So you have to [AI text starts here] dig through the detergent to get to the flour. That’s what it’s like to try to find a file in a directory that has been indexed by Spotlight.

Computing is at an interesting place for us computing mortals. The few generations old hardware and a few generations old software are perfectly acceptable. There was some website called 'Hot or Not' way back when were you could submit women's photo's and the viewers would vote on them. So I took a cheesecake photo of my wife showing a lot of leg. But then I took the photo into Photoshop selected her legs, feathered, then used 'plastic wrap' to make it appear she had on the shiniest stockings imaginable. She rocketed to #1 in days and stayed there for weeks.

159 Maybe the answer is to go to a non-secret ballot with the understanding that any acts of violence or retribution for anyone's vote will be officially Outlawed, not just illegal. They are no longer part of the law, or protected by the law. Anyone or any group engaging in political intimidation through extortion or violence can be immediately executed on sight without fear of prosecution. Like a roach. Or a coyote.

160 That strident position seems to be the new 'third rail' in politics. Oh well, in two years we'll see if the playbook changes.

* National ban, no exceptions, that would include rape, incest, the life of the mother.

A consistent two-thirds of the country supports an abortion ban after the first trimester. Figuring out the winning position isn't exactly a mystery wrapped up in an enigma.

161 "Apparently Hershel Walker took the same strident position and lost. "

So the voters of Georgia chose to elect a guy whose stated position is that Jesus wants us to kill unborn black children.

When the Black Baptist talking points sound like KKK talking points, we have a problem.

162 re: Warnock
Thanks to the Supreme Court who was tired of being in the abortion litigation business we now have 50 different states with 50 different rules and regulations and some of them have now gone from tossup to blue.

Is this now going to be the deciding issue in every state in every election - forever?
Posted by: Divide by Zero at December 07, 2022 06:53 AM (enJYY

Nonsense. Georgia basically had the same result as two years ago. Blaming the abortion decision is a cop out.

163 Microsoft Edge. How can I shut it down (I see in the startup that I can disable it) and use another search engine? And what search engine should I be using?
I use the pc for gaming and browsing the web but am otherwise not tech savvy at all. I can build a house from footer to finish but the tech gig is not in my wheelhouse.

If we can't beat them out, we can wait until they abort themselves out.

We should encourage abortion, really. They were going to hell anyways. Not like it's a net negative to the cosmos.

Absolutely. 'Celebrity' endorsements of otherwise weak candidates doesn't seem like such a great idea. Oz was kinda okay, but Walker not too bright.

Higher can indict trending toward pre-diabetic.

And I have gained a lot of Covid weight over the years.

And with the retina issue, the possibility of diabetes has been a nagging worry in the back of my mind.

It wasn't quite that bad, I read the transcript. He's referring to some perceived bias in the healthcare system.

WARNOCK: ...That's a place where government could show up and address the obvious bias in our health care system.

REID: It's what Jesus would do.

WARNOCK: I think it's exactly what Jesus would do.

St. Paul would write you a sternly worded letting telling you to please stop being such a piece of shit in the name of our Lord. And then publish it to the rest of the world so that everybody knows what a shitbag you are.

Jesus Himself would turn you into a drove of swine and chase you off a fucking cliff. You charlatan.
