Mid-Morning Art Thread [Kris]

Raphael Deposition.jpg

The Deposition
Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino

This work is all about line and composition. It starts off like a very simple painting. Ten people are in the extreme foreground, divided into two groups of five. The background is a contemporary Renaissance landscape framed by the two settings of the Passion: the Tomb on the left and Cavalry on the right. A lone tree in the back marks the painting’s near-center vertical which divides the two groups. It’s very mathematical, very precise, very organized. This is where the simplicity ends, however.

The figures on the left show a variety of poses, and their heads create a tight arc that thrusts left. My eye goes to Christ’s body first. In a mass of bright reds, blues, and greens, His body is a pale tan. It is also a horizontal element among verticals. It sticks out. Following Raphael’s line, my eye comes to the man supporting Christ’s upper body. This man is straining from the dead weight of the corpse. Notice how his head and upper body parallels Christ’s and how the two faces are almost identical. It seems like Raphael is trying to link and contrast these two specifically. They are life and death, sinner and sinless, Man and God. I also like the irony here: the man is burdening under the weight of the dead Christ who died carrying the dead weight of this man’s sin.

Raphael continues the eye’s journey through the rest of the group: John, probably Joseph of Arimathea, and Mary Magdalene. Each reacts appropriately. The arc through these figures ends at Mary’s left hand which grasps Christ’s. It is full of meaning. Look at the subtle coloring. Christ’s hand is pale and lifeless while Mary’s has a warm golden tone. Her touch is tender, full of sadness and shock, and anchors one end of the arc. My eye is drawn through several different reactions, like I’m seeing the stages of grief unfold, before ending here. For me then, this tiny gesture is the emotional center of the painting.

Christ’s legs and the straining arm of the man holding them lead my eye into the second group of figures on the right. Echoing the left, this group leans right, but the motion is not as dramatic as the other. Where the leftward movement is defined by the pose of the man holding Christ’s head who is at the extreme left of the work, the man holding His legs is in the center. His pose mirrors the head-bearer but the flow rightward is stopped by the strong verticals of the women behind him. These women also form an arc around a central figure, Mother Mary, who faints and is supported by the others. Mary complements Jesus. Compare them. They have similar poses, facial expressions and pallor. They almost mirror each other. Also the line formed by her body will intersect Christ’s at a right angle, forming a T. This recreates the form of the Cross, which is also seen on the hilltop in back. As Mary falls back, her form brings my eye up to that hilltop and the event that preceded this scene.

24 So, why did most Renaissance art paint historical scenes in the dress and style common in the Renaissance?

Was it an intentional style choice, because it was easier, or they just had no idea what clothes of the time looked like?

Yes.

It was fashionable at the time, I think, and in many later periods, to portray the past clothed in the styles of the painter's present. Paintings of Roman soldiers did not look like the depictions on Trajan's Column, for instance, but more like the uniforms of the painter's day (plus a plumed helmet that didn't look much like a real legionary's helmet, but was dramatic).

The exceptions tho were God/Christ, Mary, the Apostles, and sometimes angels. These were clothed in ancient garb, possibly to emphasize their stature and to separate them from our carnal/mortal world. I don't recall seeing these figures depicted in contemporary dress.

I've often thought the same thing. Christians use a symbol of execution as a sign of faith, hope and adoration. Death becomes life.

Posted by: grammie winger at December 07, 2022 09:47 AM (45fpk)

52 In what world does it make sense that we are still discussing a homeless carpenter, a simple rabble-rouser against the established earthly rulers of his time, that had but a handful of impoverished, mostly despised friends, and who had no money, no power and no majesty?

Unless, that is, He is in truth who He said He is.

He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

One of the interesting things about Christianity is that it is very abnormal by historical religious standards.

That the chief figure of the religion died for mankind's sins...and allowed himself to do so by execution by a government...is unheard of.

Compare with Islam where Big Mo is just some conquering hero murdering and looting his way through his enemies. Crom would approve.

Well the theological claims are likewise extreme. God caring about you personally? Becoming man and having friendship with mankind?

It's radically different from other religions throughout history in that regard. It's not unusual for deities to be depicted as rulers, but it would generally be odd to think of a ruler that cares for their subjects in that manner.

I was struck by the use of color. Nothing garish, and everything to be found in nature: the browns, the greens in the clothing and landscape. Even the reds can be found in flowers. It is a scene of the earth and earthly matters about a Heaven-sent event.

72 Outstanding explanation, and I like the painting as well. The strategic use of red is interesting, although I'm not sure I grasp its significance.
As far as the looks on people's faces, this has been a fascination of mine all my life. What would be your reaction on Good Friday when the person you'd invested everything in, your Messiah, is dead? Was it possible for them to see a big picture, or were they just crushed until the Resurrection?

Both women have haloes. Mother Mary's on the right is harder to see, but it's there. Enbiggen the picture. Magdalene in holding Jesus' hand. One of her main attributes is her long, loose hair. It symbolizes her penitence, and maybe her life before Jesus She is also dressed fancier. Mother Mary is almost always depicted (in pre-modern religious art) in a veil and more plainly clothed symbolizing her modesty and chastity.

Mary, the mother of God, at the foundation of the Cross, Christ, her son, at the top. Mission, first phase, completed. On a more mundane note - four men in attendance - two working, one gawking, and one one supervising. Some things never change.

It's hard sometimes for people to navigate the idea that Jesus is more concerned with your status in the kingdom of heaven than this false kingdom on earth. As one pastor put it, we're just passing through. Act accordingly.

What gives me hope is that more and more people are awaking to the gospel and whether it's art like this or Christian concerts or online content, people are searching for a way out of this mess and realizing that there is one. It's just got nothing to do with winning elections in Georgia.

The Jews wanted a Messiah to save them from Rome. God instead gave them a Messiah to save them from hell.

85 Has anyone here seen Risen? It’s a great movie. My wife and I watch it on Easter.

It’s interesting how they show the crucified being taken down from the crosses in that movie — there is a lever that the Roman soldiers pull that lowers the cross to a horizontal position at or near ground level so people don’t actually have to climb up on a ladder to retrieve the bodies. Presumably, the same device would have been used to raise the crosses with the bodies on them at the beginning of the procedure. Very interesting. Given the Romans’ mechanical ingenuity, I can very much believe that they actually used such a device, but I have never encountered it apart from that movie.

They're the "extras." Either aides to the Romans helping to take the bodies off the crosses, or grave workers helping with the burial. They aren't believers, therefore no haloes. They're just doing their job. They wear shoes because they represent everyone else. All the haloed figures are barefoot to further emphasize their holy stature. It's a classical reference, or what Renaissance artists thought as classical.

115 Sorry to harp on it, but the gears are spinning. Without Christ, a cross is just lumber. The idea that countless people had been, and would continue to be, murdered in this manner, it was nothing particularly special or noteworthy, except to serve as execution and display method at the same time. To the extent it was a symbol at all, it meant "Don't do what this guy did and piss us off, or we'll get you". But the cross, the wood itself, was probably considered incidental. Of course it's a cross. That's how people are shaped. What's special about that? Then Jesus comes along....

230 Not gonna yank that taffy again, but no, the oil storage was not a missed opportunity of great consequence at Pearl Harbor. One, difficult to do much damage with the forces available (that understates the issue actually). Two, work-arounds and recovery from any damage done would not have changed timelines or anything else really.

And the usual other item mentioned are repair facilities/shops etc, not the sub force (which was docked openly, not in shelters of any kind). Same thing applies, perhaps even more strongly. Japanese had a pretty small force to work with, with two waves at most. Meaningful damage to industrial facilities required far more resources then they had there on Dec. 7. They would have barely scratched the surface on the fleet's industrial base even allocating half the resources to it.

Last week, Trump not doing rallies in the runoff for Walker was proof Trump was toxic. This week, Walker losing is proof that Trump is toxic.

He's got a 90+% success rate on endorsements, but yeah. He's cooked. LOL.

260 So how did Dems steal Georgia? On the face of it, they simply routed R votes into File 13.

I don't think we have the data yet, but from what I saw Walker was ahead and then the Dem counties announced enough votes to overwhelm. The same as 2020.

Atlanta waited to announce the majority of their votes until most "rural" counties had the majority reporting.

just like 2020...

261 Red Turban, very first thing I thought of when I saw the first idiotic chant along those lines.

Meanwhile, I need to review things, I was under the impression that primary voters chose the candidates. I must have missed something.

Exactly. Even our side has become Blame-Trump-for-Everything. The only politician who actually loved our country, and fought for us and our side is super quick to turn on him. He sure wasn't perfect, but anybody who is looking for perfection in a human is a fool. We still haven't noticed how the dems stick together no matter what. It's almost like in unity there is strength or something something.

Did he campaign for Walker? Seems like it was mainly Goober Graham and Lyin’ Ted

>>because their low-info sensibilities are ruffled, or whatever, doom many candidates who aren't useless GOPe.

I believe a myriad of things are behind our current predicament, chief among them is the simple often stated fact that the GOP, in the main, stopped being a functioning legitimate political party around 2007 and is simply a racket feeding off the scraps and crumbs the Donks and Deep State throw their way.

I don't see a way forward from our current dilemma in the short or long term that doesn't involve a tremendous amout of pain and suffering.

271 I have a couple quibbles. Why does Magdelane (is she even a saint?) get a halo but Mary Mother of God does not? I think it's MMOG holding his hand and that's some random woman fainting in the background. Second, I don't think that's a man holding Jesus' rear up, I think it's a very manly woman.

274 With all due respect, I see this art quite differently. I its not two groups of five but three separate groups based on purpose. The first group of two are supporting Christ into the tomb. The second group of three is composed of the lady consoling Christ with here male consul grieving her and the male behind him (first born?). The other four maidens on the right are mourners (today we would call them groupies). Notice that in one case they console each other.
