Is This Something?

Nick Cage and Nick Searcy team up to upset gun-grabbers with a story about a teen who uses a gun to get justice, called Rittenhouse: State Line Crosser.

(Or R: SLX for short.)

Just kidding, it's not about Kyle Rittenhouse. It should be.

But it will infuriate the left almost as much.

The upcoming western, debuting Jan. 6, 2023 in theaters, stars Nicolas Cage as a reformed gunslinger trying to raise his 12-year-old daughter (Ryan Kiera Armstrong). When an outlaw gang threatens his family, Cage's character schools his daughter in the art of self-defense, and that means Firearms Training 101.

"The Old Way" co-stars Nick Searcy ("Terror on the Prairie," "Gosnell"), Clint Howard ("Apollo 13," "Far and Away") and Noah Le Gros ("A Score to Settle").

French remake of the Three Musketeers, in two parts. Eva Greene as Milady. She's French I think. Or Anglo-French.

It looks a little damp, to be honest. I'm not seeing the swashbuckling quota being met. Not sure anyone is ever going to come close to equaling the Richard Lester version.

Fun story there. You might know that there's a sequel to that movie, The Four Musketeers. Ilya and Alexander Salkind, who went on to produce Superman and Superman II back to back, knew they were making both The Three Musketeers and the sequel at the same time.

They could hide this because all of the material they were shooting was from the one Alexander Dumas book. But it was a very long book.

So they didn't tell the cast or crew the story would be divided up into two films for separate release. The contracts they signed with everyone only spoke of a single movie, The Three Musketeers.

So the Salkinds didn't pay hardly anything for The Four Musketeers. It was a free movie. They paid for one movie, and got the second for free.

All of the actors and major crew were super-pissed when they saw the first movie end halfway through the material they'd shot with previews included for the next movie. Since then, all movie contracts have a Salkind clause, specifying that the contract is for a single movie only, and if there's any other movie to be made from the material shot, a separate contract must be signed to cover that.

Is this something? Chris Gore saw it and says the first five minutes are "water sports," and he doesn't mean Marco Polo.

I get the feeling that this searing indictment of Hollywood's culture of vice is actually a celebration of Hollywood's culture of vice dressed up as a searing indictment of Hollywood's culture of vice.

Um, when are you going to do a film about Hollywood's pedophilia?

By the way, Chris Gore gives a rave review for the Santa-as-John-McClane movie Violent Night.

Hmmmm...

Sounds like it might be worth watching. I like Nick Cage, and if it doesn't go down a preachy route about how none of this would be necessary if we had more social justice or down the grrrrrrl power route of a 90-pound nothing beating up big, burly stuntmen, it might turn out well.

I wonder how they handle it when they make some second movie out of the cutting-room scraps of the real movie.

65 "The Old Way" looks interesting. I see they cast a black as a bad guy; I didn't know you could still do that.

"The Musketeers" films look *very* interesting. Lester's films are quite good - terrific cast, superb fight choreography, excellent music and art direction, and scripts by George MacDonald Fraser - but on viewing them again recently, I found the slapstick to be really off-putting. It was funny the first time around, but on repeated viewing, it's boring and undercuts the mood. A version that recreates the gritty period feel of the Lester films but does it straight should be terrific to watch.

79 Just in case:
Docetism was a Christological position. Christology is a branch of theology which deals with the nature of Christ. Was Jesus fully human? Was he fully divine? What is his relationship with god the father and the holly spirit? Questions like these were the hot topic in the first couple of centuries of Christian history when people were still processing the biblical account of Jesus of Nazareth. Many conflicting ideas arose, one of which was Docetism which claimed that Jesus was fully divine and any perceptions of his corporeal existence were just illusions. So wrists argued that it is inconceivable that a son of god would have anything in common with sinful material existence. Docetism was however rejected as heresy by both the Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodoxy - the way they see Jesus not being corporeal would invalidate his sacrifice.

Arianism was another Christological movement in early and medieval Christianity. It rejected the idea of the trinity and instead preached that Jesus the son is a distinct entity from god the father and that Jesus is subordinate to god. In Arianism, Jesus is not an inseparable part of the eternal god ... (cont)

||The film rights to Flashman were bought by Richard Lester, who was unable to get the film funded but hired Fraser to write the screenplay for The Three Musketeers in Christmas 1972. This would be turned into two films, The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers, both popular at the box office, and it launched Fraser as a screenwriter.[9]||

Gnosticism is an umbrella term more than anything concrete. It’s used to describe countless movements and religions that originated from Christianity of the late antiquity all the way to medieval times. Lots of these movements were also influenced by either pre-Christian Hellenic or Eastern philosophy. Commonly, Gnostics saw material existence as inherently sinful and emphasised direct spiritual experience (and gnosis / knowledge) of the divine.

Stereotypically, many Gnostics viewed the god of the Old Testament as a different entity from the god of the New Testament. The former being an evil trickster and an architect (demiurge) of the sinful material world. This belief is one of the possible solutions to the Problem of evil
: how could a supposedly all-powerful, all-knowing and eternally loving god create the sinful material existence and all its assorted horrors?

My understanding is that the attack through Belgium was expected- heck, the main reason for the Maginot Line was to ensure that the Germans had to go that way, and allow the French to concentrate troops there- but that they screwed up by assuming that the Ardennes was impenetrable to German forces. Once the Germans flanked their prepared positions, it was a mad scramble towards the Channel.

Would make for an interesting alt-history where the French plan had worked, and the Germans had ended up bogged down in static fighting in Belgium.

Arianism was a troublesome heresy because of the fact that his followers got into the tribes first, partly from being driven out by mainline Catholics. The term Vandal as destroyer came into vogue when the Vandals moved from Spain into North Africa and went about destroying mainline churches and converting them to Arian churches. The churches on the losing end got the last word. The area stayed Arian until the Vandal kingdom was wiped out by the reconquest by Justinian and Belisarius in the 500s.

All this incredibly obscure thinking on the Trinity was an incredible self own by primarily Greek clergy. Rome seemed to have a more practical view due to barbarians being about 12 miles off. Persecution of the dominant Monophysites by the mainline church was a good chunk of why the resistance to Islamic conquest was so weak when it came.

I actually just learned that from reading the biography of Winston Churchill, "The Last Lion" (which I strongly recommend).

Another fun fact: De Gaulle (I think) warned that if the German tanks broke through, it could be catastrophic, and was told, "No they won't, they'll have to refuel eventually and lose time." Except no one realized they ran on ordinary gasoline, the kind found at filling stations all over northern France. Oops.

In 1859 or so French beat Austria in Italy and fought well.

In 1870 they were thumped by the Prussians and had two armies and an emperor captured in the first month or so. Insurgents fought on but the nation was done.

No their best troops were on the Belgian border and raced up to South Netherlands to face the Germans crossing the plains of Belgium. The forces at the hinge between the Maginot and the attack forces were weak and few, and that is where the second plan the Germans had hit.

233 Oh, and modern trailers like the Babylon one above: a plethora of short fast cuts so you are left with only an impression of what you just watched. Plus musical/sound-effect stingers that make you jump, and those fade-to-black transitions that puzzle you no end.

And the credits flash so fast you have no idea who wrote or directed the thing, unless the director is a "name."

When did H'wood start doing trailers like these? The Star Wars era, or in the '80s or '90s?

235 So I see Margot Robbie is going to be milking that faux Brooklyn accent for the rest of her career.

I will say this, I was watching her on The Graham Norton Show, it was her and Alicia Vikander and they were talking about weird idiomatic expressions and Robbie said there's one in Australia that goes, "We're not here to f*ck spiders."

Which I thought was so on brand for Australia.

No, the Allies made the exact same mistake in 1944 as the French did in 1940. We literally put untested and tired divisions in the Ardennes are for rest and refit exactly like the French did. And we knew that the Germans had attacked through there years before and could do it again. We were over confident and thought the Germans were a spent force on the western front. We were wrong.

240 Of course, no discussion of obscure Christian doctrine is complete without homoousios (the belief that God the Son and God the Father are of the same substance) vs. homoiousios (the belief that God the Son was of a similar, but not identical, essence (or substance) with God the Father.).

I've heard this is the reason for the phrase "not altered by one iota"

I've always gotten the impression that the Papacy back then was pretty exasperated by some of this and wished it would blow over. Probably it took the disaster at Manzikert to reduce the dominance of Greek religions philosophy in the church, unless there was some other turning point I don't know about. It seems in the middle ages the problems were arising in West Europe more than East.

The making of the secular authority an enforcement arm of the religious one was a bad sign and started Blue on Blue persecutions with real teeth in them. Hard to say if they could have resisted Charlemagne's wish for a one, true, enforceable doctrine for long or if it would have been better if they had. Part of the survivability of the Church post fall of Rome was that it was, more or less, a single unifying idea where the political world shattered to fragments.

There had been a tendency for the most recent few centuries for Protestant historians to rehabilitate various other sects of Christianity and this attitude continued into the secularized universities. In many cases they weren't even really close theological kin.

The Catholic Church plays the overall villain in this telling naturally. Areas with more Catholic intellectual influence do not take the same perspective.

...there is evidence of an “increased risk of suicide, drug abuse, exacerbation of preexisting mental illness, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder” for women after abortion. Yeah not only is it an actually very well made movie, but its important for modern westerners to understand how horrendously evil some cultures that were wiped out really were. Sometimes colonists obliterating a culture was a GOOD THING.

And I had not heard that about The Three Musketeers. The Salkinds were... to call them corrupt is understating things considerably. But they did manage to get some really great entertainment out there.

I agree that is the best of the film adaptations of the book (which is, as you say, very long but very worth reading. Alexandre Dumas was as great a writer as his father was a general). I don't really like Michael York but the rest of the cast is magnificent.

361 Speaking of movies based on heresy-

Saw a Polish horror movie last night on Netflix, more or less based around the Gnostic and Albigensian heresies, titled -

"HellHole"

A policeman enters a monastery, which is known for exorcisms. He is disguised as a monk to investigate the disappearance of 8 women from the surrounding area.

The beginning will remind you of the end of "The Omen". Shenanigans ensue.

"Hellhole" wants to both gross you out and then creep you out with its heretical plot line.

Somenice surprises and shocks, though a bit slow moving. This is one of those movies where the ending really delivers and saves it as a movie.

If it sounds like your kind of thing, it probably is.

I believe a major driver is history becoming a propaganda tool aimed at the masses. The West already had a tendency to romanticize and the skew begins to get worse as historical accounts become relevant to the thinking of larger and larger groups of people.

381 I am a sucker for movies based on The Three Musketeers. I agree that the Lester movies are the gold standard, primarily because they took the time to tell the lion's share of the story. I have some quibbles with the casting -- Oliver Reed doesn't look aristocratic enough for Athos and Frank Finlay doesn't have the physical presence of a good Porthos -- but Michael York plays D'Artagnan callow and cocky enough, Richard Chamberlain is a credible Aramis, and Charlton Heston is a magnificent Richelieu. I don't mind the gags -- Raquel Welch is a real find as a physical comedienne, and how can you not like Roy Kinnear and Spike Milligan?

Posted by: Darles Chickens at December 08, 2022 08:10 PM (sev8q)

382 I saw that Three Musketeers trailer the other day, and what struck me was the profound lack of color. No blue tunics, you can barely make out the Cardinal's reds....even the grass is a dull tan! That just feels wrong for a movie about royal intrigues in the 1600's.
