The Morning Rant: Impending Consumer Cash Crunch; “Pregnant People” in Tennessee; Student Loan Forbearance Unto Perpetuity; Climate Change Now Causing Slavery

If Something Can’t Go On Forever, It Won’t

People are really struggling in this era of double-digit inflation. (Your government is lying to you when it says inflation is only 8%. Look at your grocery bill and your utility bills.)

A great many of those who had been able to put some money away are finding that they now have to burn through their savings to make ends meet.

The personal savings of Americans have plunged to a shockingly low $626 billion — from $4.85 trillion in 2020 [MoneyWise – 11/25/2022]

Meanwhile, others are running up their credit cards to record high balances just to pay their bills and keep food on their tables.

Credit card debt in the U.S. hits all-time high of $930 billion [CNBC – 11/08/2022]

This is not sustainable. The economy cannot rely indefinitely on consumers with negative household cash flow to either liquidate their savings or borrow at high-interest rates just to get by each month.

This slow-moving economic calamity is one of those “gradually, then suddenly” scenarios. Consumers are gradually running out of access to cash to get by each month. When they start defaulting on their rent, utilities, mortgages, and other loan payments, we should have no reason to wonder why everything “suddenly” crashed.

Are Men Getting Pregnant in Tennessee?

Even in deep red states, the woke insanity is marching through the institutions. The Tennessee Department of Health is actively promoting the idea that men get pregnant, by using the gender-bending term “pregnant people.”

Why would anyone trust the health advice of anti-science activists who reject the biological fact that only women get pregnant?

Pregnant People - TN.JPG

This nonsense at the Tennessee Dept of Health has been going on under Republican Governor Bill Lee’s watch. He has been in office for four years, and he appoints the state Health Commissioner. The previous Health Commissioner resigned last spring, and Gov. Lee lavished praise on her upon her departure.

Perhaps this is a hopeful development…just a couple weeks ago Governor Lee appointed a new state Health Commissioner.

Gov. Bill Lee appoints Dr. Ralph Alvarado, a Kentucky state senator, as state health commissioner [11/22/2022]

I will try to contact Dr. Alvarado and ask if he supports this woke insanity, and if not, what is he going to do about it, since he now runs the department that is promoting this biological misinformation.

If any of you personally know Gov. Lee or Dr. Alvarado, please reach out to them and let me know what they tell you, and I will publish the response.

Biden Extends Student Loan Repayment Moratorium Until 6/30/2023

It really doesn’t matter that the courts have swatted down President Biden’s plan to “forgive” up to $20,000 of student debt, since he has just extended the moratorium on repayment and interest accrual for another six months, until June 30, 2023.

The White House is extending the pause on student loan payments until as late as June 30, 2023, President Joe Biden said Tuesday, as his plan for wider student loan debt forgiveness remains tied up in the courts.

This is all being done under “emergency” Covid powers, which means that the payment freeze is now being extended until more than three years from when President Trump first (and foolishly) created the moratorium in March 2020.

The actual effect is that Biden has permanently waived all student debt repayment so long as he is President, with a power that does not exist in the Constitution.

Since nothing seems to happen in legislative channels anymore, it’s a shame we can’t find a conservative version of a “Hawaiian judge” to prohibit any issuance of new student loan debt until repayment begins on existing debt.

Climate Change – Is There Anything It Can’t Do?

‘I was sold at the age of six’: How climate change is driving modern slavery [The Telegraph – 11/17/2022]

There are over 100,00 slaves in Ghana. But the problem is really climate change.

It’s a fate no country can afford; particularly not Ghana, where there are currently 133,000 people enslaved. We expect more to fall into slavery as the impacts of the climate catastrophe unfold.

The climatistas have a template they follow, and apparently the problem in Ghana isn’t that there is slavery, the problem is that global warming will make slavery occur with “greater frequency” and be “more extreme.”

Speaking of global warming and extreme weather, why has extreme heat in the American heartland diminished so much in the past several decades?

Tony Heller does amazing work debunking the climate hoax. Here are some interesting statistics from him that belie the nonsense that “our planet has a fever.”

• Iowa has recorded 1,033 temperatures above 104 degrees since 1880, but none in the past 10 years. The vast majority were more than 60 years ago.

• Michigan has recorded 564 temperatures above 100 degrees since 1880, but none in the past 10 years. The vast majority were more than 60 years ago.

Iowa - 100 degree heat.JPG

Michigan - 100 degrees.JPG

I’m sure the climate evangelists would have no trouble arguing that a decrease in incidents of extreme heat in the American heartland is completely consistent with global warming.

Songs of the Season

I Heard The Bells on Christmas Day is my favorite traditional (e.g. “religious” Christmas song. Part of it is my patriotic pride - this is one of the few pre-1900 Christmas classics that is American. It was written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in 1863 while the Civil War was raging. (There are actually a few stanzas pertaining to the Civil War that are no longer sung.)

Above all else, this is the only traditional Christmas song I know of that acknowledges that many of us sometimes deal with doubt and despair at this beautiful time of year. “Yet in despair I bowed my head” is not typical of the lyrics you’ll hear in Joy To The World, but those despondent words pave the way for the beautiful affirmation in the final stanza.

Here is a simple and beautiful version from Suzy Boggus, with Chet Atkins accompanying her on guitar.

I heard the bells on Christmas day
Their old familiar carols play
And wild and sweet, the words repeat
Of peace on Earth, good will to men

Yet in despair I bowed my head
There is no peace on Earth I said
For hate is strong, and mocks the song
Of peace on Earth, good will to men

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep
God is not dead, nor doth He sleep
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on Earth, good will to men

Have a blessed week remembering always that the wrong shall fail, the right prevail.

++++
This is intuitively obvious. It is, in a way, the same thing as Keynesianism, just at the micro scale. You save in good times and you consume those savings in lean times. When you run out of savings, you use debt if you can or you start liquidating if you can't (or can't anymore). If it keeps up, you go completely broke and fail (die, living on the street, etc.).

So depending on your starting point, it's bad, worse or worst. Those in the "worst" category are starting to fail now. Those in the "worse" category have a bit more time, but I'd look at late winter or mid-summer for that to hit. Track available revolving credit capacity as a function of the total. Not the outstanding amount of revolving debt, but the usage ratio (macro-scale or broken out by income). Consumer credit usage is increasing, but a lot of people aren't near their limits yet. That is changing. It looked like it would happen in September, but the savings collapse has helped stave that off.

And they will continue. The moratorium is much more useful than the amnesty. The "debt forgiveness" crap was bad politics, and I said so at the time.

An amnesty is a one-and-done. A moratorium, however, is a *much* more useful tool - especially if interest is recapitalizing during the moratorium. That sends a much subtler - and much more effective - message to the people trapped by the moratorium: "we can stop this any time we please. Keep casting those ballots for me, keep supporting me in public, keep your head down and don't object to anything, or that moratorium might suddenly end. We own your ass."

68 An amnesty is a one-and-done.

They're not dumb, they're evil.

They do not intend to be personally affected by any of these regulations - note that private jets/yachts are not included in the EU's fuel rationing scheme.

Informal economy may be paying them better. Essentially, as the US economy becomes more and more controlled, the black market becomes larger and larger in labor and goods markets.

Our old economic measuring sticks don't work well in such matters as you had people engaged in crypto mining, buy and selling stolen goods via flea markets, ebay, etc. and scalping where they buy a good somewhere and then sell it for a profit. There is a reason why the IRS is trying to clamp down on Ebay but that will merely force the fences to sell at local markets and informal ones.

Greece, since its debt bomb crisis in 2012 is an example of what happens in such situations. People find a way to get by whether hiring illegals, stealing, violating laws such as business licenses up to hygiene and worker safety, and so on.

Roubini noted that the spike in “unsustainable debt” ratios imply that borrowers were insolvent “‘zombies’ that were being propped up by low interest rates (which kept their debt-servicing costs manageable).” These borrowers include households, corporations, banks, shadow banks, governments, and even entire countries, Roubini wrote. Have you priced those recently. Even in the backwoods states, nursing home prices run about 100 k per year. Less expensive assisted living facilities run about 40-50k per year. In high labor cost states, it can easily run about 150-200 k per year for nursing care and 75-100 k for memory care. That is also why Medicaid is going broke as assets of the elderly are conveyed to their kids in order to make the parent(s) destitute. Then the genuinely destitute also are a part. Those in the middle either have to care for the elderly themselves at home or watch the assets of the potential estate go to the nursing facility.

By statistics, it is not 'greedy' heirs consuming parent's assets but rather a signal that the informal economy is growing by leaps and bounds.

Also, you might take a look at sudden death syndrome. The young and middle aged are suffering now far more than the elderly because they took the vaxx to protect the elderly as govt told them to do. This repugnant fact is especially true for children.

Of peace on Earth, good will to men

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep

Yes and that informal market will grow because of taxes, regulations, etc. Just as the illegal drug economy has. For example, the 'illegal' but hardly immoral use of animal or foreign sourced ivermectin to treat what the government illegitimately declared as unlawful.

Forcing shortages and scarcities by government fiat always results in an illegal marketplace for it.

296 Here, and in Canada, and everywhere in the West, the problem is that everyone in public life is corrupt. Pick any of them out, and they are as crooked as a question mark.

This makes it very, very easy for people to cherry pick the villains from their perceived opponents.

If a large numbers of voters for any Party in any Western nation were paying attention and thinking critically about their Party of choice, none of these Parties would continue to exist for one more day.

Which one prevails is down to which one can ruthlessly co-opt the others.

Nope. The PSLF is a separate provision and only counts payments for the ten years of qualified and specific loan payment plans. The emergency rule allowing ALL payments regardless of repayment plan to count expired Halloween this year but even it required 10 years of payments--aka 120 and it waived PSLF provisions regarding default as excluding one from PSLF. None of these PSLF forgiveness options counted deferral of payments as payments but borrowers could still pay loan payments voluntarily to count for PSLF purposes to get to 120 payments and also to reduce debt without any interest being owed.

According to the Guttmacher Institute (a lefty group paid by Planned Parenthood to do a study), rape, incest, and life of the mother abortions are about 1% of the total number.

Now, the left had reason to lie back when the study was born. They were under heat at the time for not reporting rapes. I still think the 1% number is probably accurate, but we are dealing with serial liars.

Important notes to put this even more into perspective - this data is still embarrassing to them even AFTER:

There is a break in traditional GOP voters and their descendants. That is also driving the internal war in the GOP between the past and teh future of the party. So far, those wanting to go back to the 50's and 60's have prevailed. Or, they make money from the informal economy or trust funds. I have the same question when my wife watches House Hunters or the international version. My conclusion is that a substantial percentage of the population has economic activity not reflected in official statistics. That is both good and worrisome at the same time. I think Greece for example has a severe divergence in official stats versus real economic activity and Italy perhaps as well.

There is no stopping it. It wasn't put in place legislatively, although Pelosi tried back in the early 90s:

You look at the sudden insanity in regards to solar panels, windmills, global warming, EVs that no one wants, etc., and this is why. It's been put in place without us. It's why our votes for Trump were so dangerous and likely why our voting system was changed so it couldn't happen again.

509 That was a very well done essay. There are indeed in any society the seeds of totalitarian nightmares. Because they are in human nature. There are a great many who would either go Nazi or at least cooperate with evil willingly or under duress. There are not as many who would fight to the death for freedom, but there are more here, than anywhere else on earth. Which is why they have to take us out eventually, otherwise they will not be able to move forward.

But his son survived to become an adventurer.
