Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | A Music Thread [Joe Mannix]When the topic of one-hit wonders comes up, the assessment is usually one of two things: Martyn coaxes a little professionalism from us. Interesting experiment. This refers to Martyn Phillips who, according to the same booklet, was the engineer and producer for the album. Well, his experiment worked. If they had listened to him more, that album might have had more than one good song and one okay song. What one-hit wonder bands do you think deserve their fate and which do you think got robbed? NOTE: As always, the mini essay is just a conversation starter if needed. You're welcome to go off-topic, just please keep it to the world of music! Exceptional Live Performances I Love Rock 'N Roll is an iconic song that was defined by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. When most people hear any part of it, their immediate thought is "Joan Jett." But it was a cover of a 1975 song from the British band Arrows. Jett's version remains fairly true to the original, just a little bit different and - in my opinion - just a little bit better. Rush released music videos for a number of older songs, usually animated. The video for "The Spirit of Radio" is an example, and I think it is very cool. It tells a brief history of radio by calling out legends in radio and the fun of music in an upbeat animated style. A lot of the animation is also pretty cool in its own right. In no particular order and no implications of quality, here are four songs I've heard recently. Bitter:Sweet - The Bomb This is an upbeat track. The Hippos - When Will I Learn? A surprisingly cheerful ska track about failing to get the girl. Gin Wigmore - The Devil in Me This New Zealander has an odd voice, but I find that I like it. Kid Rock - Forever There's a reason the album with this song is called "Cocky." In case you haven't heard, Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac passed away this week at 79. Here's "Little Lies" off Fleetwood Mac's Tango in the Night. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

When I used to live in the San Fernando Valley I was a mere 30 minutes "over the hill" from Hollywood and saw a veritable shit load of great bands in the late 70's and early 80's. When Joan Jett released her first solo album she had a gig at the Whisky A GoGo every Monday night for a month. I was there every Monday night for a month. Great live artist and has a fantastic catalog of killer cover songs. Also ran into her at one of the record stores on Sunset Blvd and managed to yap with her for a couple minutes. That was a great time and place to be into new music.

Since we're on the music thread...y'all familiar with the A.V. Club round room? Fun series of videos where bands come in to do covers of songs. Two that stood out to me:
GWAR does Kansas' Wayward Son. I don't really know GWAR, but they were actually fun, comical, but good musicians, too. https://youtu.be/HJzecKumufM The Wood Brothers do Michael Jackson's PYT. Posted by: Pug Mahon at December 03, 2022 07:41 PM (6Aopz) I was living in Colorado Springs the year Another One Bites the Dust came out. The kid downstairs would come home from school and play it at a high level of volume. The best I had to counter with was the Boston Pops recording of the 1812 Overture. That version wasn't as good as the Deutsche Gramophone recording I got later. Fiedler used shotguns for the cannon fire. The Deutsche Gramophone recording came with a paper band around it advising that it used REAL CANNONS! and to play at reduced volume until you learned how your equipment handled actual blackpowder cannons. And not little two pounder saluting guns. Posted by: Fox2! at December 03, 2022 08:03 PM (qyH+l) 93

I don't like the song. I don't hate it, but it is ehhhhh and waaaaay overplayed. The band's first album is one of my favorites. There She Goes is my least favorite song on it. It is I guess brit pop? Nothing to do with the post. I was listening to some old standard songs, singing along, and I realized just how great the lyrics are. Even without the music, the lyrics are very clever and effective poetry. The meter, as you might expect, is powerful and the rhyme schemes can be complex. And how many poems can make you laugh?
Take a look at the lyrics for "Let's Misbehave", "Anything Goes", "Spring, Spring, Spring" (from 7 Brides), or "You're The Top". It's fun reading. Posted by: JTB at December 03, 2022 08:07 PM (7EjX1) 115
The instrumental Adiemus by Adiemus is a one hit wonder for me at least. It was the first of these instrumental bands where I picked up their albums and found all the other songs utterly forgettable, and I picked up quite a few in the 1990s like that.

I stumbled on a Youtube vid of the Dave Mathews Band playing Fool in the Rain, and they actually have the pieces on tour to do a decent job. It's not particularly "Dave Mathews" in style, just a well played song by professional musicians, and one you don't see done live. No-one has ever heard of this one..local Milwaukee power pop band 80-82 The Wigs. Very skilled, wrote most of their own material, sort of a harder version of Beatles\Badfinger. One of them was later a New Monkee once they moved to LA trying to get big. I have a CD of them from a live local radio program in 82 that they put out 100 copies of a few years back and man, were they good. Just didn't fit in with the times, I guess.

It's funny, the band itself doesn't seem terribly proud of the song, as they haven't issued an actual video of it. Grace Slick is one such. Nillson, another. Though there are an endless supply of really and truly GREAT voices out there, about 95% of them can be replaced by someone else, to not much effect. How about a one hit hardware wonder? I have been looking for an inexpensive wireless media streamer box with decent software for years. I think I finally found the box: WiiM Mini and if you are a Pro there will soon be a Pro variant that has a couple extra features. The key features that got my attention is the Mini has an audio optical output, supports all the usual streaming services, has a built in DAC (and still works with others), connects to a NAS, can stream at high bit rates, can be grouped with other Minis for whole house coverage, and costs $100.00.
That is the Mini. I watched a handful of YouTube reviews and dug into several audio gear forums and they all say the Mini and Pro are bang on. Based on that I ordered one on the spot. I get it next week and I will drop a comment once I give it spin. Today only and for a few hours, it seems, the Mini is on sale for $79.00 at Amazon. I have my fingers crossed this thing works well. I really like The Waterboys from their one-two punch phase of the completely different albums- "This is the Sea" and "Fisherman's Blues" TitS is filled with great anti-song-like anthems and FB is a country influenced Irish folk album. "At Seventeen" needs two covers & retakes, as follows:
1. Weird Al, just turn 'im loose on it and let him do his thing. 2. Toss the lyrics, and get someone of great talent to fill the song with words of quiet optimism in anticipation of joys which lie ahead. Of course, the arrangement would need a different layering of instruments, the maudlin nature of the original is too deeply ingrained in the public mind to make it anything other than suicide by song-fumes. Speaking of Chuck (my fave show!), you can see all five seasons on HBO Max. I also have all the DVDs! The music on that show was great.
Posted by: Moonbeam at December 03, 2022 09:46 PM Yep, I loved that show. Had such a crush on Yvonne Strahovski and was always rooting for Chuck to get together with her character. Great rest of the cast too with Adam Baldwin and the actress who played Chuck's sister (can't remember her name). But the show for me was made even more excellent by all the music they picked for closing scenes and key scenes throughout the show. To this day, I will hear a song and it will immediately send me back to the scene in "Chuck". I discovered the group Band of Horses from their songs played on the show. Love the song "No One's Gonna Love You". Such great music on that show. https://bit.ly/3gRJaoJ Posted by: Clyde Shelton at December 03, 2022 10:09 PM (Do5/p) 548
The best live performance I saw was by Boston. On their first tour, they played their only non-concert venue in a club in Waukesha, WI. Maybe was 20 feet from the stage.
Also - my old one hit wonder offering is “Transfusion” by Nervous Norvus. Posted by: Final Arbiter of Reality at December 03, 2022 10:10 PM (orvb1) Posted by: Clyde Shelton at December 03, 2022 10:11 PM (Do5/p) 550

https://bit.ly/3VKyTKd Posted by: Clyde Shelton at December 03, 2022 10:11 PM Thanks! I'm at the end of season 2, but will go back to that episode. There's an episode in season 3 or 4 that uses "September" by EWF in a fantastic way. I'm working my way towards it. Other than the music, the other thing I loved was the shameless product placement of Subway sandwiches. But I heard at the time that it was their advertising dollars that kept the show on when it was in danger of cancellation. Posted by: Moonbeam at December 03, 2022 10:26 PM (rbKZ6) 552

Blasters/Los Lobos at the Stone in SF mid 80s
I saw this pairing at Mklwaukee's Summerfest (prbably the same tour) Just a fantastic show. Paul Cebar and the R&B Cadets opened for them and various members of all three groups would show up during the other's set and play along. Posted by: who knew at December 03, 2022 11:34 PM (4I7VG) 566
Penn had a pretty decent career, something like 5 albums. Some of the deeper cuts on each album were really good but not really radio friendly.

Joe Mannix -- Thank you for this music thread tonight. And thank you to all who contributed in the comments with songs and anecdotes. Looking up some of the songs and going down the rabbit hole for the past hour finding all the "Chuck" series songs just made my night. Sent me back to a time when I listened to all these songs and got to the heart of myself that I haven't thought about or felt in years. Brought back emotions of those times that I thought maybe I would not feel again.
Politics and the reality of the world today and of the past few years has eaten away at me inside and made me completely cynical and pessimistic and cold inside. But tonight I was able to recapture the old optimism and warmth and hopeless romantic part of myself, even if for a few hours. Thank you again. Posted by: Moonbeam at December 03, 2022 11:36 PM Oh definitely. For me, a show is great if I care about the characters and begin to feel like they truly care about each other as well, and it's not just actors. Chuck's sister, sister's boyfriend "Awesome" were both great. Chuck's best friend Morgan is great. And going through the videos, I realize that I never did finish the series and didn't realize how many great actors they had in it later: Chuck's dad was Scott Bacula. Chuck's mom was Linda Hamilton. Sarah's dad was Gary Cole. Mark Christopher Lawrence as Big Mike was great. Man, now I want to watch the series again! Posted by: Clyde Shelton at December 03, 2022 11:42 PM (Do5/p) 571

The first time I ever remember seeing MTV was at my brother's house shortly after we were both out of college and married. Like a lot of young bucks fresh out of college, he had no furniture to speak of but he did have a huge color TV and a cable package. So me, my wife, my brother's wife and his best friend's wife were watching some music video where a wrecking ball was tearing down a building and there were fires and explosions going on in the background.......utter chaos. My brother's best friend walks into the room, watches about 10 seconds of this mahem and then says, "What kind of fucked up son of a bitch would film something like this?" I laughed until my stomach hurt.....because he was right.

*Really* late to this party, so unlikely anyone will read this comment, but still:
In 578 comments, I've seen direct references or allusions to Seasons in the Sun, Afternoon Delight, MacArthur Park, Radar Love, and Spirit in the Sky (GREAT tune/shoddy lyrics. Like George Harrison and Supertramp). From an old guy, notable omissions: Hot Rod Lincoln/cover by Commander Cody. The Night Chicago Died/Paper Lace. Billy, Don't Be A Hero/cover by Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods. Abraham, Martin and John/last-hit wonder by Dion. Beach Baby/The First Class. Gone/cover by Joey Heatherton. Having established my great age and logorrhea, I'd say something rude to the NPCs dissing Sir Paul McCartney, but I figure he has one of the world's great pile of FU money, so why bother?
