But Wait, There's More ONT!

Act now and you'll get a bonus pocket sized ONT. It slices, it dices, you'll never thirst again! Invert it, and it becomes a combination paint mixer, pizza oven and baby circumciser! With the COBinator attachment (additional charge and shipping apply), you can inflate a tire, solve quadratic equations, eviscerate squid and construct your very own space station! Send your entire wallet to POBox 555, Grand Michids, Rapidagan! Act now, supplies are limited!

I thought we might spend at least part of the ONT talking about adds and/or commercials.

2 in the pink.jpg

I'd Buy That For A Dollar

I don't know about you, but I want to go roller skating now. I think this is a “real” ad – real in that I think this is part of a campaign by some comedian who made off-beat commercials for small businesses, but I don't know if it ever aired.

Of course, one of the favorite genres in the advertising spectrum is the public service announcement. So many good, important messages for the young and impressionable. Just say no, only you can prevent forest fires,...and then there's this.

So that's right kiddies. Stay in school, spend your weekends at the clean and wholesome roller rink, and when you grow up, you can be a productive member of society and do fun adult things like....vote! Maybe for this guy:

And that's about enough of that. I'll leave you with what may be the best commercial of all, from the Netherlands. Linking due to NSFW language And yes, that was a real commercial.

Coming Soon

I know Ace usually does the pop culture/media/movies/comic book bits here, but just this once I hope he won't my usurping his privilege to talk about this upcoming cinematic masterpiece:

I know he dropped a link at the bottom of a thread earlier today, but I thought it deserved the full ONT treatment. I think this may be Ray Liota's last film. From Field Of Dreams to Cocaine Bear. Quite a career arc.

From Her Mouth To God's Ear

Hemingway: Republicans Are Sick To Death Of Establishment’s Impotence, Fecklessness, Weakness

“The Republican voters are sick to death of Republican leadership, their fecklessness, their impotence, their weakness. They have no problem coming together to pass a spending bill for Ukraine, but they can’t do anything that the base actually wants or needs,” Federalist Editor-in-Chief Mollie Hemingway said on Fox News’s “Special Report.”

“They can’t fight the media. They can’t fight their Democrat opponents. And so whoever gets [the speakership] — it will likely be Kevin McCarthy — they need to understand that there is such deep frustration and anger in the base of the Republican Party. They need Republican leadership to act in a much more competent and focused way that benefits their voters.”

Related: This is Not Who We Are

He talks about things that make it very difficult, if not impossible, to discuss issues with many leftists, because they take any disagreement proof that the person disagreeing is some type of an “ist” (racist, sexist, etc). How can you govern a country if one side sees any disagreement as proof that their opponents are evil, and the other side has a leadership group who will acquiesce to anything to avoid being called “evil”? Where the possibility for compromise in that?

As long as we're here, one more:

Brokenism The real debate today isn’t between the left and right. It’s between those invested in our current institutions, and those who want to build anew.

Ryan said something that struck a nerve. “I don’t know what I identify as these days, because everything has gotten so scrambled,” he noted. “I’m not a Democrat or a Republican, I don’t even think I could define myself narrowly as either a liberal or a conservative anymore. The one thing I know that I fundamentally do believe is the premise of your piece, that the dominant institutions of American life—in education, in the arts, in politics—are either totally broken or so weak or corrupt that they’re becoming irrelevant. In a way, the only thing I know that I believe in is … brokenness.”

Ryan went on to explain that, when he gets into political debates with friends and acquaintances these days, those on the “other side” aren’t all liberals or all conservatives or in fact all from any other previously recognizable camp. Instead, they are the people in his life who, regardless of how they vote or otherwise affiliate, remain invested in the institutions and political ideologies that now leave Ryan cold. Many of them acknowledge that there are problems, even serious ones, with universities, newspapers, nonprofits, both political parties, what have you, but they see these as normal, fixable challenges, not signs of fundamental brokenness. To them, the impulse to consign weighty institutions to the dustbin of history feels impulsive and irresponsible—like arson. To Ryan, staying committed to decrepit structures, and insisting to others that they are fundamentally safe when they’re clearly not, is what feels reckless.

I don't think I quite fit in with either side. Yes, I think many of the institutions in this country are broken, but they don't need to be replaced. They need to be restored. The bedrock principles of this country – Constitutional government, rule of law, separation of powers, etc...are the best concepts for a great country ever devised by man. The fact that they are not now functioning properly to, to coin a phrase, “promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity”, does not mean that they need to be eliminated. They need to be pruned. Massively, like an overgrown fruit tree, cut back to just the central trunk and branches, so that the tree can begin to bear fruit once again.

Demonic Is The Right Word

We're back in the world of commercials again, but this time they are advertising death. I used to believe that “demonic” was just a word denoting evil. Now I'm not so sure. I don't know if I buy fully that there are actual literal demons infesting people as in the Bible, but I tell you I am a whole lot closer to believing that than I was 20 years ago.

96 Reposted from early this morning in case it might be helpful to someone:

I was reading psalm 9 which is about God hearing our cries for help, Verse four says, "You have maintained my just cause." Verse 10 also says, "Those who know your name put their trust in you., for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who put their trust in you."

I found this note so helpful:

God maintains our just cause. He is our vindicator (one who clears us from criticism and justifies us before others,) In this life, we may face many injustices. 1. We may be falsely accused and misunderstood by enemies and friends. 2. We may not be appreciated by others for the love we show. 3. The true value of our work and service may not be duly rewarded. 4. Our ideas may be ignored. But God is to be praised for he sees and remembers all the good we do, and it is up to him to decide the timing and appropriateness of our rewards. If we do not trust him to vindicate us then we are susceptible to hatred and self pity. If we do trust him then we can experience God's peace and be freed from the worry of how others perceive us and treat us.

Note on Psalm 9 from Life Application Bible-

115 I actually voted for Basil Marceaux once.

He seemed like an honest fellow and I appreciated his commercials and his platform. Besides, the multimillionaire incumbent governor was gonna win in a landslide, so I figured I'd just give the old boy a vote.

During the next election cycle, I voted for Mark 'Coonrippy' Brown. Coonrippy raised an orphaned raccoon and used to make YT videos with his new furry friend. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Management caught wind of his pet raccoon and came and seized it from him.

After a petition with 60,000 signatures of Tennessee residents failed to move state regulators to return his raccoon, he ran for governor.

Of course, he lost, badly. Like with almost no votes. But if you tell me I wasted my vote, then you can go vote for Mitch McConnell and spend yours wisely. Coonrippy's story at the link.

In the old days most print, radio, and TV ads tried to sell the product based on its taste or function being better than the competing products. Along with a clever jingle and/or beautiful girls and handsome guys to get and keep your attention.

Nowadays ads for everything from cars to fast-food try to get people to buy products because the company making the product is woke to the max and shows a multi-racial family or gay couple using the product. Terrific taste or great features or value for you money is rarely mentioned.

Yuck.

247 Yes, there are literal demons - discarnate, malign spirits that were either never human, or have become so malignant and twisted that they have no humanity left. Every culture throughout human history has articulated this idea at some point. They're even mentioned in the Bible. This idea didn't emerge out of nothing.

There is a real, external source of evil in the world, and these things seek to lure people into destructive behaviors, whether it's destroying and degrading the self, or damaging the fabric of society.

323 We tend to think of "institutions" as having an entity in of themselves.

This is wrong. They are made up of people. The reason they are dysfunctional is because of the type of people who gravitate and now run these institutions. New "policies" or legislation won't repair these institutions. They are embedded like ticks in the body politic. They won't leave willingly, if you hadn't noticed, and will go total scorched earth if otherwise made to.

More than one kid came up to her and told her that her poster struck a chord and they ALWAYS wore their safety glasses because of it!

TWA Hotel
-

My gosh! The memories!

The last time I was in there, I ran like hell out of TWA's domestic terminal in the main one to catch an international flight I was late for. There was no one else coming in and going out at that time. Security rushed me through and I remember running so fast through one of those arched tubular tunnels to get to my gate at the end of the tunnel.

But there was no light there. I saw right in front of my nose as my 747's nose smiled at me just as the plane had begun its reverse tow, while I watched the attendants closing the gate door.

And then TWA went belly up. That'll teach 'em!

To begin with Kanye does the interview while wearing

Charlie Sheen during his tiger blood meltdown by comparison looked completely sane. Ultimately, I couldn't sort out if Kanye should be pitied or reviled.

376 With that, I'm going to tag out. Bedtime read of 'Ramage's Mutiny'. I believe Captain Ramage is being sent to the Caribbean, to recover a ship seized by mutineers, and handed over to the the Spanish.

The writer's foreword notes indicate that he (the writer) is currently aboard the yacht Ramage, in English Harbor, Antigua. Dudley Pope is quite the authority:

"He took to living on boats from 1953 on; when he married Kay Pope in 1954, they lived on a William Fife 8-meter named Concerto, then at Porto Santo Stefano, Italy in 1959 with a 42-foot ketch Tokay. In 1963 he and Kay moved to a 53-foot cutter Golden Dragon, on which they moved to Barbados in 1965. In 1968 they moved onto a 54-foot wooden yacht named Ramage, aboard which he wrote all of his stories until 1985. Pope died 25 April 1997 in Marigot, Saint Martin.[1] Both his wife and his daughter, Jane Victoria survive him."

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc. etc. at December 02, 2022 03:03 AM (bJHK5)

377 The Perfesser is gonna shoot me for posting book stuff here.

But:

"Dudley Pope was born in Ashford, Kent.[1] By concealing his age he joined the Home Guard aged 14 and at age 16 joined the merchant navy as a cadet.[1] His ship was torpedoed the next year (1942).[1] Afterwards, he spent two weeks in a lifeboat with the few other survivors. After he was invalided out the only obvious sign of the injuries he had suffered was a joint missing from one finger due to gangrene. Pope then went to work for a Kentish newspaper, then in 1944 moved to The Evening News in London, where he was the naval and defence correspondent. From there he turned to reading and writing naval history.[1]"

378 Chaps are worn over pants. When you don't wear pants they becomes assless chaps. Any harley rider knows this, because the chicks tell us. When somebody would split their pants open you would say you blew your ass open, because now there is no ass to your pants. Chaps with no pants has no ass, so its assless chaps. A hot chick wearing chaps with a G-string is wearing assless champs. Its in the rule book of harleydom.

Also, Mercury, Mars, and Neptune right now. Astronomers view this simply as the optical illusion it is. Astrologers see great significance in Uranus going retrograde.

404 I actually voted for Basil in the TN governor's race last month.

Why?

Because I almost lost an eye to infection when our current governor--who is legitimately the most conservative governor Tennessee has had in my lifetime--locked down the state after buying the cellphone location data for *everyone* and deciding that we weren't voluntarily limiting travel enough.

Instead of going to the doctor I had to do a televisit with a third party who misdiagnosed me over video chat. The medication made it worse and I ended up in the ER a couple days later.

I didn't lose the eye but I do have some permanent muscle damage around the eye. Every time I look in the mirror, I'm reminded of it.
