Florida Pulls $2 Billion from ESG/WEF Gangster Socialists BlackRock

ESG is an investment philosophy that deemphasizes return on investment in favor of investing in leftwing grifts and boondoggles whether they earn a profit or not, or even if they just go bankrupt.

It's not a "political" move to pull public retirement funds out of ESG funds like BlackRock -- it ought to be the law that it's illegal to put them in BlackRock at all. Investment managers have no right, especially when handling people's retirement funds, to invest them in funds that de-emphasize actual investment growth in favor of pushing leftwing boondoggles like green energy.

Florida just did a very prudent thing.

Florida's Chief Financial Officer said on Thursday his department would pull $2 billion worth of its assets managed by BlackRock Inc (BLK.N), the biggest such divestment by a state opposed to the asset manager's environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) policies.

The move will hardly dent BlackRock's $8 trillion in assets and drew a strong response from the company, which said the action put politics over investor interests. Nonetheless it underscores how a backlash among many Republican leaders, such as those in Florida, against ESG investing, which they see as promoting a "woke agenda" is gathering steam.

Republicans are set to assume control of the U.S. House of Representatives in January. This will allow them to hold hearings on ESG and grill the chief executives of BlackRock and other major assets managers about their ESG policies, and also pressure regulators to scrutinize them.

In a statement, Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis said the state's Treasury, which he oversees, would remove BlackRock as manager of about $600 million of short-term investments and have its custodian freeze $1.43 billion of long-term securities now with BlackRock, with an eye on reallocating the money to other money managers by the start of 2023.

"Florida's Treasury Division is divesting from BlackRock because they have openly stated they've got other goals than producing returns," Patronis said in the statement provided by his office.

Asked about the move, BlackRock said in a statement that "We are disturbed by the emerging trend of political initiatives like this that sacrifice access to high-quality investments and thereby jeopardize returns, which will ultimately hurt Florida's citizens. Fiduciaries should always value performance over politics."

Dude, it's your own stated investment philosophy that puts politics over performance. The whole point of ESG is to free investment managers from having to pursue only old-fashioned concepts like "profit" and "safety," freeing them up to use other people's money to "fund the future" and "be the change we've been waiting for."

Larry Fink, head of BlackRock, is very loud about advertising his company's commitment to things other than investor security and profit -- until someone notices, then he lies and says his company is just all about sound investing.

BlackRock, a visible and loud voice in the index fund space, is placing a greater emphasis on sustainable investing. CEO, Larry Fink, expressed that his investment firm is increasingly integrating ESG issues into the investment decisions. He stated, "A company's ability to manage environmental, social and governance matters demonstrates the leadership and good governance that is so essential to sustainable growth."

Why should Florida's cops, teachers, and firemen have their retirement money being invested by a guy who seems interested in investing for every purpose except investor wealth?

Meanwhile:

Texas already cut them off from doing business in the state, and Blackrock was definitely concerned about that. If other red states follow suit, they're definitely gonna hurt, even if they aren't actively fucked.

19 ESG is an investment philosophy that deemphasizes return on investment in favor of investing in leftwing grifts and boondoggles whether they earn a profit or not, or even if they just go bankrupt.

Its basically the response to stuff like Solyndra which was all good will and eco and leftist virtue that crashed and burned because you cannot sustain a company like that.

So the left said "well this is obviously stupid and a waste of money, lets look at better solutions!"

No, I'm kidding, what they actually said was "lets make it a religious thing then, and have people believe that they are not throwing money away, but investing in virtue and goodness without worrying if it makes money."

They turned it into tithing instead of business.

To be sure, hanging is more eco friendly than shooting as hemp plants sequester carbon, it is reusable over and over again, plus it fits the current style of using hemp in products for its healing quantities. Plus, there is no lead or mining required plus chemicals needed for ammo production.

If you use existing lamposts or trees for hanging the enemies of humankind, then you are even more sustainable in your practices. I know that deep down those being hanged will appreciate the sustainable and eco friendly way they are executed.

Fiduciary has a responsibility to invest in the best interests of the client, which basically means to not lose money. Returns are secondary.

In the case of ESG a strong case can be made that such an investing strategy is unsound and not in the clients' best interest.

Boondoggle? Green energy?
rhennigantx posted this at the very tail of the Morning Thread. Beautifully illustrates what a boondoggle is.

Electricity usage in the UK at this time of year is given by Homewood as 840 GWh, which would be 35 GWh for each hour of the day. The capacity of the solar generation facilities in the UK is given as 14 GW. That would mean, if the solar facilities produced at full capacity for the 24 hours, they would have produced some 336 GWh, or a full 40% of the UK’s usage for the day.

On 11/29, at around noon, the solar panels reached their peak of generation for the day at 1.33 GW — less than 4% of average usage. For the whole day, production from the solar panels was all of 5.46 GWh, or 0.65% of usage. The times of peak electricity demand are the early morning and evening.
At those times the UK’s solar panels produced absolutely nothing.

Nobody was charged with wrongdoing, according to reports.

78 Speaking of gangsters and grifters. An EPA funded study that examined the health benefits, such as cleaner air, from wind generated energy from 2011 to 2017 determined that "marginalized" communities were not receiving their fair share of the benefits because the wind farms were being built where white people live (like out in rural areas).

In other news clean air hates "marginalized" people.

Posted by: Chatterbox Mouse at December 02, 2022 02:53 PM (I9VC/)

Fiduciary has a responsibility to invest in the best interests of the client, which basically means to not lose money. Returns are secondary.

In the case of ESG a strong case can be made that such an investing strategy is unsound and not in the clients' best interest.

My prediction: There Will Be Blood.

But, first, Cheech.
Posted by: CZ=FNG, Free Republic of Florida at December 02, 2022 03:02 PM (MkuC5)

It's not exactly "not to lose money", otherwise they'd only be in money markets and government debt.

Not everyone is a fiduciary though, any given manager of a specific fund is supposed to invest according to his mandate (no self-dealing, no insider trading, etc.) but is not a fiduciary of his investors. He doesn't have to take into consideration the specific tax circumstances of all his investors for instance.

The holy grail of those in finance is to achieve profits with no risk. To do that, you basically turn investing into a casino where the house always wins at whatever game (type of investment) the sucker (I mean investor) plays. You can pit one group of investors versus another and rake off the fees, you can siphon off loads of cash for 'managing assets" incompetently or competently, and you can get them on transaction fees whether the investment is incoming or outgoing.

109 Electricity usage in the UK at this time of year is given by Homewood as 840 GWh, which would be 35 GWh for each hour of the day.

233 Not everyone is a fiduciary though, any given manager of a specific fund is supposed to invest according to his mandate (no self-dealing, no insider trading, etc.) but is not a fiduciary of his investors. He doesn't have to take into consideration the specific tax circumstances of all his investors for instance.
Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead! at December 02, 2022 03:05 PM (eYoxG)

As you indicate, fiduciary is a specific title with specific legal responsibilities. Most money managers are not designated as fiduciaries.

Those money managers that are fiduciaries are under *no obligation* to produce returns. Whether said returns beat or lag the markets or returns produced by non-fiduciary managers, market indexes, or whatever metric one wishes to use, returns are immaterial to the primary obligation of the fiduciary - which is the *requirement* to invest in the "best interest" of the client. Period. Though what constitutes "best interest" is an arguable point, in this regard ESG will get its comeuppance. Other states and municipalities will follow the lead of Texas and Florida.

Private investors will not be far behind.

Commie cocksuckers have been salivating over the prospect of getting their grubby little hands on private citizens' 401k funds for decades. ESG is just the stealthy way of doing it, by diverting those funds from profitable companies to woke corporations which are owned and managed by commie cocksuckers. It's much less provocative than straight government confiscation, which is something they've discussed quite often.

247 Being in Antifa eventually has consequences.

A Syrian-born Portland female antifoid discovers that Actions Have Consequences:

On top of what’s already been a very difficult few months for me, about two weeks ago i got taken to court in a custody battle by my extremely abusive ex. my kid is my best friend, we’ve been extremely close from the day they were born. i couldn’t afford a lawyer, so i represented myself and did the best i could. but i failed. their arguments were all revolving around my involvement with antifascism and my criminal trial, with a sprinkle of misogyny.

I think the "sprinkle of misogyny" refers to her Only Fans account.

now, two weeks after i lost custody, two weeks after being promised the bare minimum of spending every weekend together, my soulmate is being forcibly taken to live in Lebanon. and there is absolutely nothing i can do about it.

She's also facing trial in a couple weeks for felony riot and misdemeanor assault and unlawful use of bear spray. She made the mistake of doing this in a suburban county, so she doesn't get a Soros DA, and will face a suburban jury.

Not a good couple of months for her.

This is why such requirements won't be there. When the feds get around to doing "reparations" - probably when the black vote consistently breaks at under 80% for the Democrats - they will probably define it by race instead, and it will end up looking a lot like the Nuremberg laws.

"“For seventy years the SIGHT AND SOUND POLL has been a reliable if somewhat incremental measure of critical consensus and priorities. Films moved up the list, others moved down; but it took time. The sudden appearance of "Jeanne Dielman" in the number one slot undermines the S&S poll's credibility. It feels off, as if someone had put their thumb on the scale. Which I suspect they did. As Tom Stoppard pointed out in Jumpers, in democracy it doesn't matter who gets the votes, it matters who counts the votes. By expanding the voting community and the point system this year's S&S poll reflects not a historical continuum but a politically correct rejiggering. Ackerman's film is a favorite of mine, a great film, a landmark film but its unexpected number one rating does it no favors. "Jeanne Dielman" will from this time forward be remembered not only an important film in cinema history but also as a landmark of distorted woke reappraisal.”"

Well I'm pretty sure a lot of this is people padding the shit out of their ESG score. They did get blasted pretty hard by being out of oil (which is one of the few things that is a relatively objective metric) but otherwise seem to put a lot of effort in trying to mimic the broader market.

Same shit Biden does all the time with his pseudo-self-deprecating "humor" e.g. "now who did they tell me to call on" --thinking it only highlights how funny it is to say this for The Most Powerful Man In The World. Ummm...nope. If he's my soulmate, he doesn't answer my calls or return my text messages very quickly-.some soul mate-The latter of which I understand is not that unusual for some busy kids away at college.

Seriously, though calling your kid your soul mate sounds like a person really severely lacking in boundaries or creepily like possible grooming and possibly abuse.

315 It becomes an issue if they want to do "reparations" to the descendants of slaves. They'd have to prove that they are.

This is why such requirements won't be there. When the feds get around to doing "reparations" - probably when the black vote consistently breaks at under 80% for the Democrats - they will probably define it by race instead, and it will end up looking a lot like the Nuremberg laws.
Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at December 02, 2022 03:33 PM (t0OGg)

The mechanics will be lit AF and more details should be sought constantly. For example: if someone both qualifies for reparations and has slave owner descendants (quite common), will there be an offset? We all know the answer in advance but it would be fun to watch, which is why it never will happen.

The only actual criteria will be voting history.

Stocks trade in a secondary market and rarely intervene in company decision-making. So chasing 90-day returns would just be a momentum fund or something, it wouldn't actually affect how companies operate.

Depends on how the contract was written up. If Blackrock gets management fees, they could just as well invest in lottery tickets and claim that it is a sound ESG investment in schools and education. No matter what they invest in, they get the management fees.
