  • Here's everything that went wrong with FTX. (The Verge)

Yeah, it just "went wrong". By accident.

  • FTX's Collapse Was a Crime, Not an Accident. (CoinDesk)

    That's more like it.
In the weeks since Sam Bankman-Fried's cryptocurrency empire was revealed to be a house of lies, mainstream news organizations and commentators have often failed to give their readers a straightforward assessment of exactly what happened. August institutions including the New York Times and Wall Street Journal have uncovered many key facts about the scandal, but they have also repeatedly seemed to downplay the facts in ways that soft-pedaled Bankman-Fried's intent and culpability.
More October institutions, possibly November, but yes.
It is now clear that what happened at the FTX crypto exchange and the hedge fund Alameda Research involved a variety of conscious and intentional fraud intended to steal money from both users and investors. That's why a recent New York Times interview was widely derided for seeming to frame FTX's collapse as the result of mismanagement rather than malfeasance. A Wall Street Journal article bemoaned the loss of charitable donations from FTX, arguably propping up Bankman-Fried's strategic philanthropic pose. Vox co-founder Matthew Yglesias, court chronicler of the neoliberal status quo, seemed to whitewash his own entanglements by crediting Bankman-Fried's money with helping Democrats in the 2020 elections – sidestepping the likelihood that the money was effectively embezzled.
This is the straight shit. If you're interested in the real story behind this latter day love child of Charles Ponzi and Bernie Madoff, read most of the thing.

3 And the evening and the morning were the Thursday -- approaching the weekend at last!

Looks like I missed out on a good discussion of movie comic actors. Sandler once annoyed me, but then I saw him in Just Go With It, the remake of Cactus Flower from the '60s. It's a farce, but a well-constructed one, and Sandler serves the material instead of making it all about him. (Plus any movie with Nicole Kidman and Jen Aniston doing a hula dance contest is worth seeing a few times.)

Jim Carrey could do drama as well as comedy; but most of his work I've seen has that problem, that he is making the material all about him. Ben Stiller is much better in the things I've seen. His role in the remake of Neil Simon's The Heartbreak Kid was well done.

4 Pixy, quick tech question. I've been using FBackup to backup my files at work (Win 10 PC). Lately I've noticed it has been skipping new or changed files despite being told to catch them. I installed the new version, and it's no better. There's Windows' own Backup, and I used that yesterday. Are there any other free scheduled-backup software packages out there that you can recommend?

Yeah, I'm not really sure what the best solution is there. What I do personally is copy everything to a Linux server, because I do know how Linux backups work and all the tools are free. But having to buy another computer to back up your first computer isn't ideal for normal users.

I've just enabled Windows Backup on this laptop - it has a 1TB SSD and a 1TB microSD card - and I'll see how it goes.

Yeah, in Sydney it would typically be around 30C / 86F by now, but the whole of eastern Australia is unusually chilly for the time of year. I chose the new location partly because it's consistently cooler than Sydney, but I wasn't expecting to need to run the heat during the day in summer.

15 So I upped my cable speed from 100 Mbps to 1200 Mbps, since it cost basically not much more. Then ran some speed tests and saw nothing changed. Had comcast send a reconfiguration command to the modem, and still nothing.

Then I decided to actually look at ther specs of my router. Now the router (which should be replaced by Sunday hopefully) says it can deliver up to 300 Mbps, but then i do a search on it and it says the 4 Lan and 1 Wan ports are all 10/100. I'm guessing this is my problem. How the hell can you be rated for 300 Mbps if you have parts that cap you at 100 Mbps?

As I said hopefully this ends Sunday when my new router, which looks like some piece of armor I would have collected by beating a boss in Skyrim, shows up. If that works I'll maybe get the better Arris Doscis3.1 router too so I can reach my max speeds.

20 Oh, and the overnight temp has thudded down to a close-to-seasonable 48 F. here. The cooling, they say, is only for a day; by the weekend temps should be back closer to 80 w/ humidity. And I'd planned to clay and wax the car. Oh, well.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at December 01, 2022 04:32 AM (KAKDL)

21 Yeah it says the 300 Mbps is WiFi, but if the Wan port is only 10/100 wouldn't it cap the incoming signal from the modem at 100 Mbps? So it couldn't put out 300?

Actually I plugged my smart TV right in to the modem and it still didn't reach 100 Mbps.

I have a feeling this is going to end up with me fist fighting the comcast xfinity guy outside my house around Christmas as they try to tell me they need to rewire everything.

I think a bunch of the bigger investors, like hedgefunds, knew the deal and used FTX's laundering operation to get around donation limits and pure bribes.

The celebrities saw something new and cool and jumped on thinking they'd make a ton, plus they saw SBF with all his connections and thought it was a sure thing.

Then the average Joe's followed the celebrities, as they ate as gullible and greedy.

Id like to see SBF go to jail, but id much rather see who was invested in the company who made out with a monetary gain, as their the ones who most likely set this whole scheme up in the first place.

I would install Windows Linux Subsystem on your pc, install rsync and just run a nightly script to syncronize your files.

Or alternatively there is a rsync variant for windows called backupper I believe.

You could also ditch the windows pc and get a mac and use time machine.

33 Good morning morons

Wolfus, when you write And the evening and the morning were the Thursday, I find it a tad jarring. Not that you should care, but Here's why.

In Scripture, in Hebrew anyway, when the Genesis story is told, the formula is "and there was evening and there was morning" describing each day of Creation. In Torah, it says "a third day, a fourth day" etc. But it refers to "the sixth day" and "the seventh day" to demark these days as different and special.

This nuance is lost in the KJV version. Inquiring minds want to know...

77 I was reading psalm 9 which is about God hearing our cries for help, Verse four says, "You have maintained my just cause." Verse 10 also says, "Those who know your name put their trust in you., for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who put their trust in you."

I found this note so helpful:

God maintains our just cause. He is our vindicator (one who clears us from criticism and justifies us before others,) In this life, we may face many injustices. 1. We may be falsely accused and misunderstood by enemies and friends. 2. We may not be appreciated by others for the love we show. 3. The true value of our work and service may not be duly rewarded. 4. Our ideas may be ignored. But God is to be praised for he sees and remembers all the good we do, and it is up to him to decide the timing and appropriateness of our rewards. If we do not trust him to vindicate us then we are susceptible to hatred and self pity. If we do trust him then we can experience God's peace and be freed from the worry of how others perceive us and treat us.

Note on Psalm 9 from Life Application Bible-

8 people in Georgia have been charged with at least $30 million in stolen benefits meant to assist unemployed individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic.

141 n this month’s election, 75.4 percent of Republicans turned out and voted, according to Jarrett. In 2018, the GOP turnout was more than 1 percentage point lower at 74.2 percent.

Meanwhile, Democrats saw a lighter turnout this year than in 2018: 68.5 percent versus 69.9 percent.

There are more registered Republicans (1,436,852) than Democrats (1,270,544) in AZ

181 A 1966 article in Good Housekeeping proposed a set of guidelines for children’s public autonomy as follows: “A six- to eight-year-old can be expected to follow simple routes to school, be able to find a telephone or report to a policeman if he is lost, and to know he must call home if he is going to be late. A nine- to eleven-year-old should be able to travel on public buses and streetcars, apply some simple first aid, and exercise reasonable judgment in many unfamiliar situations.”

200 I don’t think you need a secret deal to explain the supposed détente between Apple and Musk. Cook is unlike his foot soldiers in one respect: he is only willing to reduce the bottom line, not sacrifice it.

One thing Apple has wanted since they started making phones if not earlier is to be independent of the networks. Forcing Musk to build a new cell phone would mean competing with someone who is potentially independent of the networks.

Perhaps Cook’s successor would be willing to do that. I don’t think Cook is.

These are collected by locals and then use the day after the election to change the vote.

220 a variety of conscious and intentional fraud intended to steal money from both users and investors
Designed to give money to Progressive institutions of their 'secular' church, while skimming a bunch off the top for themselves. Also designed to give our gov't more reason to push for regulation of crypto and even introducing a gov't version for currency.

Prove to me I'm wrong, thinking that this was intentional in giving Dems election money and for letting gov't into the arena.

228 Forget FTX - A crime? Absolutely. But there is a bigger crime in progress right now. The US Gov. is testing its own digital currency as we speak. It will be imposed on us unless we get wise but quick. It's called CBDC - Central Bank Digital Currency. I call it the end of Freedom. Us morons need to be spreading the word far and wide. I hope the head morons here will start making this public to everyone. (I'm not against crypto as I own some. We can't allow the Feds to force us into using their own.) It will be programmable. Think about it. Scary as $hit. Once fiat currency is gone you will only have the FedCoin. They can then dictate how you spend it and for what purposes. Of course, only Gov. approved purchases. Get it?
