Wednesday Morning Rant [Joe Mannix]

Tolerance

When I was in grade school, my fellow students and I went through some classes on "tolerance" to teach us that we had to put up with people even if they're different from us. It made sense to me, but I got a different perspective on it when I went home. My dad asked me what I learned in school that day, and I told him. He told me something along the lines of, "be careful, boy. That's not what they mean." I objected to that and told him that tolerance - that, as long as they're not hurting me, I should put up with different kinds of people, even if they're not like me - sounded like a decent approach to things.

He agreed, but insisted that what they were preaching was not about tolerance - that is, putting up with people who aren't like you - but rather about forced compliance. The way he put it to me was, "today it is tolerance, but tomorrow it will be acceptance. Next week, it will be celebration. Next month, you'll go to jail if you disagree with the celebration." I didn't really get what he meant at the time - I was just a child - but he turned out to be correct.

A wonderful example of this comes from our neighbor to the north. Justin Trudeau - paragon of asinine, virtuleless leftism - was pretty clear about it. Trudeau recently made a visit to Canada's "Drag Race" spin-off. For those who are unfamiliar with it, "Drag Race" is a competition/beauty pageant show where drag queens compete to become the "next drag superstar." It isn't new, and the obsession with drag with is much more recent. In keeping with that obsession, Trudeau visited the show and said this:

Can we move beyond 'tolerate' and start embracing and loving and accepting and learning from and being challenged by. That's how you build a resilient society, that's what we're trying to do in Canada and we got a lot of work still to do.

It gave me flashbacks to grade school. This is precisely what my dad told me back then, just being said plainly and clearly and in public by the head of a major government. It isn't enough to merely tolerate different people, you have to "embrace and accept" them or you're a bigot. This isn't even couched in old-fashioned "diversity" language anymore. The pernicious pivot from "tolerance" to "inclusion" - championed and advanced by corporate HR departments and academia with their DIE obsession - is complete and we're on to the next chapter. Forget tolerance and forget inclusion - neither is sufficient. You must love it or you're a bigot.

Yet, oddly, if you're not down with the program, you don't have to be tolerated. You have to be destroyed. Tolerance - and inclusion, and "embracing and loving" - do not, of course, apply to you. After all, you're bad. If you will merely tolerate different kinds of people and get on with your life but not embrace, celebrate and love them, you're a monster.

It isn't just Trudeau, of course. This is the attitude of everyone in the Western elite. He just talks about it more.

A right to one's own personal conscience and convictions is key to Western civilization. What our elites are doing is a return to paganism where you must publicly worship whatever idols that the elites come up with or suffer the consequences.

Like gravity, or death. It is one of the underlying principles of reality as long as humans are a feature of that reality due to human nature being nearly immutable in the absence of a significant modifying force that is not just positive and negative behavioral reinforcement but also supernatural reinforcement through grace. What is grace, it is that which assists a naturally miserable human to transcend his/her "nature". You can make progress with self discipline, but most people can't get all the way there without grace. You have to not only dig a little deeper, you gotta ask for help. Cause you cain't fix all your shit on your own.

54 I remember this very argument on lefty leaning university bulletin boards. This must have been 30 plus years ago.

They kept talking about "tolerance" but were confused, I pointed out the textbook definition from memory, it is something along the lines of "allowing others to hold differing beliefs, without accepting those beliefs".

Even then, they were demanding outright approval if not participation and calling it "tolerance". It's always been a scam, and never negotiated in good faith. Decent, peaceable people let their guard down, and are being hunted down for it, figuratively if not (yet) literally.

I went to middle school in NJ during the race riots. We had lots of lectures on tolerance and acceptance.

To make the point more clear, we had two principals, one for the white students and one for the black students. The lesson we learned is that the authorities tolerated and accepted bad behavior to a much greater degree depending on skin color. White kids had a lot of dues to pay for other people as it turned out.

If you are looking for idealism in politicians, it is like looking for virtue in a whorehouse. I don't want idealism in politics but pragmatism. I have a religion to provide me my ideals, not politicians.

In most cases, the devil is in the details so when something like the Respect for Marriage bill comes out, politicians will preen claiming principles led them to pass it. In reality, donor and leadership pressure along with a fear of ostracism led them to vote for it. They figure it will never apply to them and theirs. Likewise Aid to Ukraine, etc. Aristotle mentions that most people respond to rhetoric (aka principles), few respond to dialectic. So all politicos are expert at rhetoric but absolutely awful in promoting what is good, just, beautiful, and true in society where people flourish.

Can we move beyond 'tolerate' and start embracing and loving and accepting and learning from and being challenged by. That's how you build a resilient society

Yes... the Romanovs, the longest lived Dynasty in European history, were notable for all those qualities, IIRC. Especially the "being challenged by" part. Romanovs loved that. You could challenge them and they were totally cool with it.

Society has drifted leftwards and the GOP candidates followed society because that is where the dollars from donors were. I also suspect kompromat is involved as well as the intelligence community turned inward after the Cold War ended. That is how the spy business is done--get compromising information on someone to force them to do what you wish. Note that the Clinton WH early on pulled detailed security clearance files on all prominent GOP serving in prior administrations that has plenty of kompromat. Larry Flynt was also involved along with other shady PI's in gathering current dirt on Clinton opponents.

Notice that the GOP willingly put in a pedophile who was being blackmailed as Speaker in office. That tells you something.

164 I still think that tolerating people as long as they're not hurting you, live and let live, is a decent policy and way to be.

The rest is very true, though. Apparently tolerance wasn't the goal, celebration was. And then lack of celebration is rebranded as "intolerance" and "intolerance" is the only thing that no one has to tolerate. Indeed, it's a moral mandate to hate and destroy, to not *tolerate*, those who will not celebrate.

The true base and foundation of the problem, I truly believe, is collectivism. Pretty much forced compliance, yeah. Because we're not individuals each with the right to be as weird as makes us happy as long as we're not bothering someone else, we're part of a collective and everyone has to be in compliance. There's no room for the odd-ball or eccentric. So the only solution is to normalize the individual.

It explains, too, why the assumption is that any disagreement is a threat. Compliance and conformity is assumed, individualism is not allowed, so disagreement is a threat. The purpose of grouping everyone is to gain power, of course, so it's hard to fight against.

Yup. If you have a civil society with any diversity whatsoever - and you will, even in fairly closed-off places, because even your own kind will come up with different ideas every now an again - you have to put up with people being different from you. You have to tolerate it, but you don't have to accept it. "I think you're a weirdo and I may not like you but you're not hurting me, breaking any laws or trying to compel me to be like you, so it's none of my business" is, in my opinion, a good way to go about things. That's what the "tolerance" preaching was always framed as.

It isn't anymore. It probably wasn't then, either, at least in terms of what they actually meant.

And in general people who do well in lawschool get good jobs, and either because they get good support/training or ability or both they do well career wise. Not all, there is a bell curve. I did well on it, and I mostly agree - it tests your ability to study and plan for a big task, but it has almost nothing to do with any actual law. Almost everyone who ends up in law school (except "diversity" candidates) is good at that kind of thing. I think they're dropping it because the results embarrass the "diversity" candidates, most of whom appear to dislike doing any actual work. (cough OBAMA cough)

What it has to do with doing well in law school is that it tests your ability to prepare for a challenging task.

A lot of his appointments were dubious. Amnesty was another unforced error and his actions in Reykjavik were not wise. Similar to coddling Argentina which gave the junta leaders the belief that they could invade the Falklands. Reagan also left no political heirs which then allowed GOPe through GHWB to come back.

He was not perfect but far better than alternatives at the time because he believed that the Cold War could actually be won and that statism and stagnation in the domestic economy was not necessary.

He was that close to screwing it up. He wrote about the Iceland conference and was told by his advisors to make a deal he was walking down the hall to do it and in those few seconds alone - based upon his experience negotiating as union rep and later a calif governor that the best idea was to say no. He left without a deal and they caved. The establishment wisdom, isn't. You can't change the paradigm from within.

I hadn't heard that, but I have heard that Apple pushed a software update to turn off the "Air Drop" feature on Apple devices. Air Drop is actually pretty cool. If you're in proximity to another device, it will establish an ad-hoc (that is, decentralized, direct point-to-point) network with it to transfer messages or files.

Air Drop is decentralized and was apparently being used by a lot of protesters to coordinate. Apple pushed a software update and poof - the feature is gone.

318 It's a disadvantage having given up on it all about 2 years back, but I doubt there are any data showing *any* significant difference in mortality, anywhere, that can be linked to "policies", related to C19. But there was no evidence of such until then, and a few independent observers had closely tracked this from the start.

Sweden, Florida, South Dakota, a handful of other places - radically different (i.e., who went by the book, the actual epidemiology book, as developed over the last century) had outcomes indistinguishable from the worst lock-down jurisdictions, when adjusted for actually relevant factors (age, health condition).

But in a world/society where an outlandish hypothesis with no empirical support (AGW) is being allowed to slowly impoverish and subjugate *all* of mankind, with little resistance, I guess the irrational and really ridiculous assertion about C19 "policies" is hardly a surprise.
