Beware the Great Potoo Cafe

1106px-Mae-da-lua-gigante_Nyctibius_grandis.jpg
The potoo
Sounds of the Great Potoo

Baby goats jumpin' all over a Great Pyrenees.

Kitten napping with ducklings.

Kitten playing with ducklings.

Golden snub-nose monkey.

Somethin's goin' on.

Dog meeting the new puppy.

Cat asking for food.

Teasing the dog about food. I used to do this all the time. Except I would do "Do you wanna..." The dog expected "go for a walk," not "eat."

Be careful about scaring animals.

Good boy.

GAINZZZ.

Is this the new game?!?!

16 I was relistening to History of Rome. Duncan was expounding a bit in the early going that I have always found worth remarking on out loud in my car:

'they(the Romans) were only students of the arts and philosophy- never the masters. They only excelled in War, Engineering and Administration.'

Me: Yes, they were only the best in the three most important things to a people who are living in a brutal, deadly world. What a bunch of lumps.

85 So, OT - but as of right now - Cochise County has not backed down and certified the AZ election results. Mohave backed down under threat of litigation, to their shame since it is hard to see how SOS Hobbs has any standing to proceed against Mohave - which she would have had to present herself as the harmed party in any such suit and Mohave Cty is basically Republican red and did not vote for her anyway.

But Cochise is still pretty big news - if it holds, then AZ courts must also have to hold that non-certified results (in this case a statewide election) must be audited if they are to be remain in accordance with AZ state election laws. In short, if the reason for non-certified results is the election results of OTHER counties, they must be audited, too. This was the gambit all along. If the courts agree with the SOS Hobbs that these counties are required to adhere to "drag along" - ie meaning they must certify or be not counted - which is not a legislative law in AZ btw - then Cochise voters get disenfranchised, and their votes get discarded - not really seeing the AZ courts doing that but you just never know. It's a southern border stare down right now.

CCP for concealed or open carry.

I know Lee passed a law in TN allowing for constitutional carry but there are some stupid laws still in the books that make it possible for cops to arrest you. So even though it's CC, you only get a defense from the laws on the books, which means you still have to go to court.

157 If you know some of the older, wiser crowd in this town, they'll tell you about when I invented football. True story. Democrats aren't all about serious policy and getting results - we know how to have some fun and games.

This was shortly after Garfield was assassinated... Republicans have always been crazy about guns. Still doesn't make what happened to the lasagna-chomping GOP fat cat right.

Anyway, these guys tried to bring in a foreign game called rugby. Played a game right in downtown Scranton. Well, I know a Russian game when I see one, jack, and I wasn't having that. Rushed the field, and kicked that Slavic soccernaut to death right on the 69-yard line. Then I deflated the ball. Tom Brady learned that from me.

Since Democrats hate waste, I fixed that ball with some of Doctor Jill's medicated sinews and pumped it back up. That dark brown, bloodstained rugby ball was the first football, and I used it to defeat Spain in the 1883 Manly Cup. That's why the Mexicans still call me Abuelo Sucio. Means "mighty warrior" in Mexican. Word as a Brandon.

He can spare us the theatrics. He could have stood firm, and the SOS would have had to sought "civil" remedies, not felony prosecutions. Only if he knew the statewide election was truthful, something he could not know, and still sought to prevent the duly elected representative (ie a clear 1965 CRA violation) could he have been pursued for some sort of federal criminal "fraudulent" election law violation.

>>Personally, I like Load/Reload era Metallica. I've also heard the new song and don't feel like it's bringing anything new to the table.

Metallica is one of those bands where pretty much everything they've produced has been good.

It's just that their first 5 albums are unassailable without a single bad track on those albums, they are essentially perfect albums and everything after those albums has been less than perfect.

202 From the China thread earlier -

"There was some trade. Romans got silk, I have no idea what the Chinese got. Slaves maybe, Rome had a ton of slaves."

The two countries didn't trade directly. Instead, the nations in-between provided the merchants and caravans that traded the goods. The two nations were very much aware of each other, and the Han Dynasty (the reigning dynasty at the time) knew that the Roman Empire was extremely powerful. But they didn't know much more than that. At one point, the current Han emperor dispatched an envoy to Rome. The envoy's mission was to figure out where exactly Rome was, and bring back some first-hand accounts of what the Romans were actually like. Apparently the guy reached one of the ports on the Persian Gulf. But the locals (the Parthians, I think) didn't want direct contact between Rome and China. That would threaten their control of the trade, and also risk the two empires allying against the Parthians. So they spun a story claiming that the envoy was much further from Rome than he actually was. The lies discouraged the Chinese envoy enough that he gave up and returned home.

204 The lifestyle in the 30s wasn’t anywhere near as sedentary as ours is. People had to walk, laundry was exercise, scrubbing floors, kids played outside and occupied themselves. Meals were cooked at home, lunches packed. People ate out, but not like we do. Farms were worked, manufacturing and other labor intensive jobs were worked. The men in the office jobs went to sports clubs. We moved our bodies! We all know my biases here, but get off your kiesters and move! Eat well 80% of the time and enjoy the not so great stuff the rest but move. Every single day. Challenge yourself every single day to work something, anything a little harder. Unless you are ill. Then use all energy there. The rest of you? Move it move it.

Because in the Dobbs decision where SCOTUS struck down RvW, Clarence Thomas said in dicta that substantive due process, which Roe and Casey were built on, was bullshit and that in the future, other cases, like Obergfell, which pretend marriage was predicated on, could face scrutiny.

This sent the usual suspects into a tizzy and so we get this bullshit, so they threw in inter-racial marriage as a sweetener to pressure the nutless GOP to get behind for fear of being called, wait for it...

I don't think Metallica sold out, but I do think they reached a point like all bands seem to where their creative output is diminished and they don't really have the energy and ability they once did.

I think it has partly to do with success, where they get distracted by things other than loving the music and wanting to make a great song. They start being comfortable and stop trying as hard.

256 Load was a good album with many great bluesy metal songs on it, Reload is where the slide began to meh-ville.

I agree. And that's okay I mean... they had a great run. I don't mind if bands retire after a while, when they are done putting out their best stuff. The Cars, for example. Their last contractually obligated album the studio forced them to do was bleh but they were solid for every album before that, and decided it was time to go. U2 should have folded up shop decades ago.

Bands like the Rolling Stones I get continuing on, they are more like old blues guys who play until they fall over dead on stage. I saw John Lee Hooker play live and the guy looked like he was 112 years old. Still could sing and strum though.

But most bands, just... give it up boys. Once you have grand kids, its time to give up sex, drugs, and rock n roll.

312 Trump and his family and supporters have been subjected to the most abusive treatment of any political candidate in US history. They've been called traitors, deviants and anti-American criminals and spent years fighting against a corrupt government using every power to not just beat them but destroy them. Nobody has every been through anything like this in the history of this country. And his only crime was not playing the game and being rough around the edges which is largely why he survived.

In the meantime he delivered more actual policy success than any president in my lifetime and that includes Reagan. And he scares the shit out of the establishment and somehow managed to get more legal votes than any sitting president in US history.

Anyone who thinks it won't take a belligerent asshole to win against what we are up against is not looking at reality. This isn't 1965 and Beaver Cleaver has left the stage. We either fight back every bit as hard as the corrupt establishment or we lose.
