Thanksgiving ONT

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Pepe Thanksgiving.jpg

I hope everyone had a wonderful day, full of fun and companionship with friends and loved ones. We were supposed to have a few people over, but for various reason, most of them had to cancel. That left us with a lot of food for just 4.

Feast.jpg

Pretty much the usual. Turkey, stuffing, green beans, sweet potato...

* Um, WD, don't you mean sweet potatoes? *

Not really, no...

Tuber.jpg

That's the biggest thing I grew in the garden this year. Very sweet too, wasn't woody at all.

In any event, today is a day for gratitude. It's important to take time to remember and acknowledge our blessings. Doing so makes the trials and tribulations of life seem smaller. Of course, this is an ONT, so it's an open thread, always, but if you'd like, spare a post to let us know who and what has blessed you this year before you get to the fart jokes. Personally I'm grateful for my family, and everybody's continued good health, including my elderly parents. I'm blessed by a wonderful wife, and two good sons. I'm fortunate to live in what is, despite the trying times we're going through, the greatest country on the planet. And I'm lucky to have an extended online family, even if y'all are all Morons.

Sit back, relax, digest your meal. Count your blessing. Enjoy the moment, because tomorrow, tomorrow starts the madness.

Christmas season.

I must say I'm offended by that can of jellied cranberry juice. Can't you people boil water? But it still looks like a nice little dinner.

I'm thankful that I can still put on a feast for family, made obvious by the failure of someone to put the extra leaves in the table and having to put food on other available surfaces.

37 We went light this year.
Son and DIL made the turkey , gravy and green bean casserole (Alton Brown's recipe).
I made dressing, lime jello salad, pecan pie and Dutch apple pie.

Best turkey I ever had. He brined it, spatchcocked it and 12 hours on the smoker.
Green bean casserole was all from scratch and while much more delicious than the usual, 'twas too much effort for the payback on a busy cooking day. Recipe is a keeper though.
I never made a pecan pie before. Figured it was complicated. Wish I had known 50 years ago how stupid easy it was to make. Oh well, goes in the rotation for however long I have left.

We ate early, napped and are on round 2. Had to hide myself a piece of the Dutch apple, 'cause hubby keeps grabbing a bite and it seems that the topping is almost gone and only apples with bottom crust will remain if I don't stake a claim - lol.

I read up on "yams" vs sweet 'taters yesterday. A true yam is a root vegetable that grows in Africa. They don't grow here. They are more like "Irish" potatoes than sweet potatoes by a long shot.

In the early part of the 20th century, a Louisiana agronomist developed a new breed of sweet potato that was yellow colored (due to much higher Vitamin A content) as opposed to the normal sweet potatoes.

In marketing these, they decided to call these "yams". It is now federal food law that yams have to have "sweet potato" on the label to indicate they are not in fact, real yams.

Anyway, I got pissed reading about how calling sweet potatoes yams is "cultural appropriation" and due to structural racism.

I was born in San Diego, CA, as Mom had "gone west" in the immediate pre-war years. She later became a Rosie the Riveter at a Torrance, CA aircraft factory. In the post WWII years, she met and married my Dad, and I came along 'bout three years later.

Never did get to see New England till I was in my late 20s, nearly a decade after she'd passed at age 54. Did stay at the Andover Marriott a couple times, till I discovered the Burlington Marriott. (far superior). Further drive to the Wilmington, MA corporate HQ, but worth the effort. Love the MA history, would not want to live there, nor do I wish to return to San Diego to reside. I'm a Texan (since 1976), with Tennessee & FL as viable retirement options.

Yes. True yams don't grow here. They are more like Irish potatoes.

The term "yam" applied to sweet potatoes, was a marketing thing to distinguish the new very orange flesh that had been bred.

106 I lead the Thanksgiving prayer this year. I wanted to do it because I wanted to make the point to the grandson, that no matter how bad things may seem at times, no matter what crap you see about the lives of "the rich and famous", that so many of the people on this earth would trade places with the humblest of us in a heartbeat.

We need to be thankful, even in these dark times for our nation, that we have hot and cold running water, indoor plumbing, adequate food and shelter. Through no goodness of ourselves, we won the lottery of life by just being born in the USA.

The grandson is 11 years old and seemed truly surprised that most folks do not have anywhere close to what he takes for "normal". To their credit, his parents said "Yeah, Granny is right, most people are poor in a way you cannot imagine." He got some things explained to him about reality and thankfulness.

115 We had the whole Sabin clan, except the ones in exile, together today. For the first time in five years, my oldest daughter-in-law was able to enjoy the entire experience. She's had two major hip surgeries, a whole slew of lower spine surgeries, and she's now working on weaning herself off the opiates and other massive pain killers. She looked and acted so much better today than in the past five years. My daughter did not attempt to kill my son-in-law with any real malice, just the usual sniping and snarking. The two grandsons let the adults eat in peace. Best of all, I did not collapse and need to be carted off to the ER. There was lots of food, and a good time was had by all. With any luck to speak of, 2022 is going to finish off pretty good, and 2023 might actually pass as a Sabin success story. (No, our expectations are not all that high. Mere survival is considered a high achievement.)

117 I use a frozen deep dish pie shell, so be governed accodingly.

2 cups chopped pecans and if you have some whole ones, they will look fancy set on the top before you bake it.

Mix together (you do not even need an electric mixer) -
3 eggs
1 cup dark corn syrup
one half cup brown sugar
1 Tablespoon molasses
4 Tablespoons melted butter
one half teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons vanilla

119 continued, because *spam*

Put the 2 cups of pecans in the pie shell
Pour the mixture over the top
The pecans will float up
If you are going to get fancy with some whole pecns on top, for looks, lay them on and poke them down a tad so they get some mixture on top.
Bake at 350 for half an hour and then tent it with tinfoil for another 30 minutes so the crust and top pecans don't burn.

You want it just *barely* jiggly in the center when you take it out. You'll be able to tell.

I was musing about grandfather clocks last thread (technically longcase, short amplitude pendulum clocks, the most accurate), and looked up the accuracy of these things.

Less than 1 minute per month is pretty good. And then I stumbled on something very interesting: Clock B.

Accurate timekeeping was a big part of solving the Longitude Problem. John Harrison,
https://tinyurl.com/d5ju4sq
was an old, self-taught horologist who invented the first accurate marine-grade chronometers. He should've won the motherlode Longitude Prize, but he didn't. The Establishment Horologists hated him, 'cause he was beneath them or something....

Is that normal? Are there really people in this world that don't serve gravy at big holiday meals? I just assumed they had gravy, they prepared it, but the gravy thief nabbed it from them and they were too embarrassed to say anything about it. I imagine a little guy with porcelain gravy boat shoes and big ladles tied to his belt going "clank, clank". A maniacal giggle as he runs away with your gravy. Leaving a thin trail of gravy off to the horizon. I'm ready to believe all that sure. But choosing not to have gravy?

Good gravy making like cranberry sauce is a dying art, and truth be told we Xers are the ones who helped kill both.

I eat meat to taste "meat", and I can salt it to my taste and dip it in sauces as needed.

At the end of the day, it is an extra step and an extra thing to go wrong-hell we settled on a well made, salt aged slow-cooked roast this holiday.

185 >>> Good gravy making like cranberry sauce is a dying art, and truth be told we Xers are the ones who helped kill both. I eat meat to taste "meat", and I can salt it to my taste and dip it in sauces as needed. At the end of the day, it is an extra step and an extra thing to go wrong-hell we settled on a well made, salt aged slow-cooked roast this holiday. Posted by: sven at November 24, 2022 11:34 PM (Lzpvj)

My mom diced up the "extra" parts of the turkey (liver and stuff) and combined that with some pan drippings and regular old McCormick turkey gravy and that was good gravy. Not too difficult. I've tried fancy brown gravy recipes and her simple method is just as good. Maybe I should just start casually asking people, "will there be gravy". BYOG If I knew I'd be prepared. Maybe I should just always carry gravy. In a flask or something just in case.

187 You have to love the intro as well, "we kept the subject awake for 40 hours-an innocent man would have been going more and more crazy in righteous anger each hour."

There is a fine line in case or when you are being interrogated however it is a game of psychological cat and mouse. You get too animated they turn the screws harder, you do not get animated at all they wind up the clock and keep going. You have to read the interrogator and look at his sub autonomic responses to your responses and then sucker him into believing you are what he needs you to be to back off.

Innocence or guilt does not really factor into it, and it is important to assert a passive-aggressive dominance and cow them with the unrealized potential of your intellect.

You can see in their eyes when they do not understand the inner workings of what you bring up.

Fun fun whole lot of fun, for my next comedy I may buy Pappilon.

Yes. It was the Lefties that called for the past truce.

Their previous m.o. was to start a debate over some position that they thought was unassailable. After being rebutted by multiple people, they would then decided that was a good time to change the topic.

We understand the Left's positions. They can't even contemplate that other positions even exist.

Also let's look at the moral math and signposts of your example. The left cannot understand that "Putin Bad" is not actually much of an indictment against "population laboring under corrupt Slavic shithhead X" like the Ukies are not really ALL to blame for the Azovs. The average Russian not really in love morally with the likely collateral damage death of a maternity hospital so yes there is societal guilt but it is a far different guilt than the hungry, rapacious throsty defense of infanticide by ~ 35-45% of the United States' population.

We are so messed up right now today that I literally cannot believe that I am in a position where I have to accept that we are in fact not the moral equivalent of my former blood enemy Russia when they were the Soviets but we are in fact quite possibly as a culture morally inferior.

It horrifies me.

When my grandmother died there was a short search for her private recipe book. Now, this thing looked like Indiana Jone's Father's grail diary in The Last Crusade. Old, medium size leather bound book held closed by a rubber band. Written in half english, half italian, some ink, some faded pencil, some stains that made things impossible to read, loose pages, separate added pages of notes, you name it. It was a treasure trove that took a bunch of people in the family to decipher. Its been an ongoing project to reconstruct and actually cook the recipes. The women have so far got maybe a half dozen dishes down.

I have a box like that, and so did my mom. I cropped a lot from her stash, to be sure. But just plain cooking? We just plain cook. I never understood the anxiety over roasting a turkey, or making gravy, or a pie crust, but I guess most folks weren't raised to just plain cook.

260 Oh Bers, that's AWESOME

Posted by: JQ at November 25, 2022 01:57 AM (dpnJh)

yeah, its been going on for a while now. The best thing of all was that I sent Mrs B to my grandmother's while she was still alive to learn how to make her gravy and meatballs. Well sauce, but we're italian so its gravy. I knew she was getting old, and I told Mrs B to go there, stand next to her, make it with her, watch her every move, every step, and write it down. My exact words to her was if my grandmother leaps up, spins around and farts on her way to the fridge you frigging write it down and you better record record the pitch and duration, lol. Well, she did it, and damn if she didn't nail it. She was the only female in the family who knew how to make it after my grandmother died, my grandmother's own daughters didn't know. With that recipe mastered its the base for many of my grandmother's dishes. Well, when we can figure out the rest of them anyway.

261 Yep, that's the best way Bers... Be There With Them!

Wish I'd paid more attention to my granny while she made candies. I have some recipes but missed out on her technique. And she's gone now, alas.

Admittedly, I can live without "divinity". Makes my teeth ache just thinking of the stuff. But her almond roca was out of this world

My brother spent a lot of time with my grandmother when he was young. My parents were from the same town, so my grandparents were alo. My mom used to split us up sometimes so one grandparent didn't have to deal with both of us. I ended up at my maternal grandparents more because that grandfather had a work shop, and I was fascinated by the tools and would tinker with my grandfather. Well, look at me now, lol. My brother used to like going to my father's parents, and that grandmother was the italian cook from hell. She had the real authentic Rome/ Naples style. My brother actually helped her cook a lot of times. He was able to fill in a few missing pieces of her technique.

265 My family commute is done, and boy I am glad that is over. It featured wrecks that closed all 5 lanes of traffic, coming and going. I guess if you're going to wreck your car may as well take out some others as well. These days you can be doing 70mph and get rear ended by someone doing 100. Whew. Glad to be home.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals."

We dined with my in-laws, our daughter and her significant other. Ten adults and one child. Our household was responsible for cooking the turkey -- definitely not my idea -- and, try as I might, I failed to avoid spilling some of its juices on ne as I transported it to and from our car twice. I don't mibd cooking a turkey and stuffing; I do mind having to convey it while hot to and from a vehicle.

Anyway, all of us had a pleasant time. The in-laws more likely to delve into politics were elsewhere and that was a definite plus. After dinner we played some word games and confirmed to ourselves that we remained well educated, clever, and witty.

It was good to be with them and for that, I am thankful.

274 Mornin', all

Nice spread WD. I like your Hoosier cabinet! Mine has slide open garage doors and doors on top. But wood panels- your look like tin insets? Very cool! Mine has the flour sifter in one end of the cupboard. It's one of my favorite pieces of furniture. Which brings me to something I'm grateful for: my dad was an excellent woodworker and I have several pieces he refinished for me. He also helped with rehabing this old house when we bought it. There are a lot of good memories of him when I look around here.

Had a very nice day with family at my brother's. Great food, good conversation, all around a relaxing, fun day. Thankful for that, and of course this place and Ace and all of you morons. You've gotten me through some difficult times. I owe Ace a nice tip - 1st thing when I get up.

When Mom died back in May, one of ny Dad's brothers, after executing a touch and go landing to convey his sympathies, started hounding us kids about "your Dad's recipe for making pickled herring". While we knew that he had made pickled herring around the year's end, not one of us was aware whether he had a written recipe for it or not. Try as we might, we could not get his annoying baby brother to understand that there was not any such recipe to be found. It became a source of ironic and annoyed amusement every time the phone rang, while the four of us were making arrangements to dispose of Mom's things, to wonder whether Baby Brother was calling again in order to hound us for Dad's recipe.

276 I miss the big family get-togethers of yore. Everyone's either passed or too far away now. Glad we have technology-- phones!

This Thanksgiving, I'm feeling so grateful for having had such loving family and wonderful memories of them. And that hubby is surviving, even thriving, in spite of the illness his Dr's said would kill him 2 years ago! Even getting a few purrs and rubbies from the neighbor's cat seems a blessing after losing my furry friends so long ago...

277 Hi JQ!

This was our 1st real - almost whole family - holiday get together since Christmas 2019. Something that would've been unimaginable before the covid panic. *I have nieces that went overboard. Later it got too difficult to transport mom. That's something I need to make peace with, she missed out on a lot because of the BS surrounding covid.

290 On the night of Nov. 15, 1842, a group of 25 black slaves largely owned by a notorious Cherokee slave master made a daring escape.

Unfortunately, the rebellion, which later became known as the 1842 Cherokee slave revolt, has remained but a footnote in the history of American slavery. After Native Americans were exempt from the slave trade in 1730, many of those Natives took to owning black slaves themselves, moving off their ancestral lands with slaves in tow.
Indeed, by 1860, the Cherokee Nation alone owned over 4,000 black slaves.
