Study: chronic dosing of THC reduced testicular volume in Rhesus monkeys.

For each 1 mg/7 kg/day increase in THC dosing, there was a marked loss in total bilateral testicular volume of 11.8 cm3 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 8.3--15.4). In total, average bilateral testicular volume decreased by 58%. Significant dose-response decreases in mean total testosterone level by 1.49 ng/mL (95% CI: 0.83--2.15) and in estradiol level by 3.8 pg/mL (95% CI: 2.2--5.4) were observed, but significant increases in the levels of follicle-stimulating hormone by 0.06 ng/mL (95% CI: 0.02--0.10), luteinizing hormone by 0.16 ng/mL (95% CI: 0.08--0.25), and prolactin by 7.4 ng/mL (95% CI: 3.4--11.3) were observed. There were no statistically significant changes in semen parameters.

Conclusion(s)
In rhesus macaques, chronic exposure to THC resulted in significant dose-response testicular atrophy, increased serum gonadotropin levels, and decreased serum sex steroids, suggestive of primary testicular failure. Further studies are needed to determine if reversal of these observed adverse effects would occur if THC was discontinued and for validation of the findings in a human cohort.

I can't have my bilateral testicular volume decreasing. I leave that to JackStraw and his ilk.

This guy says he got shredded to 10% body fat just by keeping in a caloric deficit (watching his diet) and walking on a treadmill. Caveat, his before picture shows that he started off at about 13% bodyfat, so he wasn't exactly out-of-shape.

He makes a few points:

Walking burns almost as many calories per mile as jogging. That may sound like nonsense, but I introduced a nonsense comparison: Calories per mile, not calories per minute. You'll burn calories more quickly running, of course, but walking burns them too. It just takes longer.

Walking also keeps the body burning energy in the fat-burning zone, where only fat is burned for extra energy. More intense cardio causes the body to burn muscle tissue for energy (along with fat), which isn't the end of the world -- you can build muscle back -- but it's not ideal, either.

The big disadvantage walking has over other forms of cardio is that it takes so long. You're not exerting yourself anywhere near your limit, so you have to walk for a while to burn 300 or 400 calories. But the advantage of walking over all other forms of cardio is precisely that you're not exerting yourself anywhere near your limit, so you're never wiped out from it, and you need almost no recovery time. You can walk everyday; if you have the time, you can do two long walks in a single day.

He walks on a treadmill, he says, because where he lives, Florida, is so flat, and he needs the treadmill to simulate inclines to increase intensity. If you have hills near you, you can get that intensity just walking outside.

Regarding intensity: To get something out of walking, you have to try to walk at a brisk pace, one that causes you to breathe somewhat heavily. Casual strolling does burn some calories but so few you'd have to walk a long while to really make an impact.

A big problem with walking is that if you're not paying attention and mentally putting the whip to yourself, you will find yourself naturally slowing to a casual stroll. You can't do that in jogging, because if you jog too slowly, you just fall out of the jog entirely. Jogging has a minimum speed. But walking doesn't. If you're not paying attention to your pace, you can really start loafing.

I used to get my best times with a Jawbone tracker set up so that my phone would give me my split times audibly periodically -- telling me that the last quarter mile was walked at a pace of 15 minutes per mile or whatever -- which would help me focus on maintaining a pace.

Just one thing you have to keep in mind. It's not the end of the world if you loaf, but if you loaf for too long, you're getting fresh air, but not really exercising much.

That's all I've been doing in this post-Thanksgiving period. I tried starting some home workout stuff but I didn't get a schedule down and stop.

I'm using this guy as an inspiration -- supposedly he lost 330 pounds over a year and a half just through diet and walking. Although, his walking schedule was walking a mile to and from Walmart for each of his three meals per day. I assume he was on disability or welfare because the walking alone, not counting changing, showers, and stretching, would take three hours per day.

Still. Most people won't be looking to drop 330 pounds.

This guy walked 100 miles in 7 days (he says), which is about 31,000 steps per day, and, in addition to losing four pounds of fat, he says he gained an inch of height due to his back straightening.

I don't think I believe that. On the outer edge of plausible but... meh.

I think I'll just eat some liver and testicles for GAINZZZ.

What about you guys? What are YO GAINZZZ?

19 If you are looking for a walking workout, try rucking with a weighted pack. As with every new workout program start out with light weight and low mileage and slowly buildup. I get a great cardio workout with rucking.

Posted by: Ganowicz Commie Exterminators, LTD. at December 09, 2022 05:20 PM (oXIiU)

20 The walking statistic is very misleading. You lose considerable aerobic value after 3 hours of continuous movement. Running is absolutely better for weight loss than walking, but you have to be willing to run for a long time.

If you are choosing between walking 3 miles and running 3 miles, sure it is a wash. I often will walk shorter distances when on a multi-day training simulation (I am half way through one right now, 3/6/10/23 miles). Pretty much the same aerobic effect, though you use different muscle groups.

But once you get to 10+ miles, you better be running them, because the time you take to walk that distance yields diminishing returns.

I visit the graves of some of the people in the church who died the last couple of years or who I knew were active in the church before I came, and thank God for them and (The Protestants may howl at this-but I ask them if they're in glory to pray for our church .

Some of the Christmas decorations people put at the cemetery are kind of amusing and/or and touching. Nice displays of greens and ribbons. One had a little flag saying, "Welcome, Christmas." I'd like to hope that where they are it's Christmas or Easter all the time

65 You don't actually "burn" muscle from high intensity cardio unless you're doing it for hours on end, like 24-hour mountain bike racers. That can result in a dangerous condition where the byproducts of muscle breakdown accumulate in your blood and turn toxic. It's rare.

During anaerobic efforts, your body draws on sugar. When your blood glucose drops, it converts the glycogen stored in your liver into energy. When that runs out, you bonk.

My only problem is if I walk for too long (now this is real world walking, for maybe 3 hours without a stop) my one knee tends to bother me for days (i think i tore something years and years ago and never had it fixed or rehabbed or really rested for long periods) While running for 20-30 minutes doesn't cause a problem. So I should try doing this at an incline, since i f'n hate running.

I had a lithotripsy procedure done for kidney stones and after passing about 44 stones I decided to supplement my pain meds at the suggestion of friend with edibles. I had him get me two brownies. What I failed to do is read the packaging as far as a “dose”. All I saw was a 4”x4” brownie snack. Whoever made the brownie did a damn good job, one of the best tasting brownies I had ever had. After devouring the first one and washing it down with milk I eyeballed the second and ate that too. Bad idea. Later read the dosage and all I was supposed to take as a dose was a 1”x1” piece of brownie. My first and last time I tried that shit. They shouldn’t put a drug in something so tasty.

MAE

It's a multi-factor problem:
Age related muscle loss (sarcopenia)
Age related anabolic resistance to protein intake

You can strength train, using a progressive loading scheme to build muscle at any age. You just have to be smarter as to how you go about it when your older.

The issue of protein requirements to drive muscle synthesis is a harder issue to address due to the increased requirements of older people to get a Muscle Protein Synthesis response. Recent studies show that the over 60 y/o cohort need upwards of 200 grams of quality protein per day, due to their decreased ability to utilize protein efficiently.

That's on top of hitting the Carb / Fat /Fiber macros as well.

Been mixing in doing the elliptical for 5 minutes as fast as I can then doing the 5 minute/50 reps for one muscle group then rinse and repeat until 20 minutes on the elliptical then 20 minutes on the weights.

Lost 4 pounds over Thanksgiving.

162 I've been on a much better diet the last 3 months. I'd been trying a certain diet for about 3 months before that, but I couldn't stay on it. I looked back through my notes and realized that I had only adhered to my diet about 1/3rd of the days over the previous 3 months. So I decided that I'd just adhere to my diet every other day for 4 weeks. That worked--I was able to stick to my diet every other day & start developing better habits. Over the last 2 months I've been sticking to my diet 2 days out of every 3. That has been working too. I'm not sure if I can do 3 out of 4 or 4 out of 5 though.

There's some wiggle room on the "true" number, as some studies are using Lean Body Mass, and others use Body Weight as the determinant.

I go with LBM, and I have to supplement the hell out of my food intake. For one, I cannot eat a lot at one sitting; two, I get full really fast...and I hate feeling uncomfortafull. So I end up using Whey Protein, upwards of 90 grams from that alone.

194 Lack of gainnzzz...I started walking, shortly after surgery, because, while I've never been fat, I've definitely been in far better shape. I started out with the idea of working up to a couple of miles. Then, after I got that far, I added a weight vest and gradually added weight over a few weeks.

According to what I've read, 10% of body weight is the max recommended for a weight vest. Well, since I don't weight that much, I was at 10% of body weight within a few weeks. So, naturally, I went over the recommended by a few pounds. I only wear the weight vest three out of the 5 days I'm walking. I'd also add, I walk very fast and track my progress with a Garmin.

Unfortunately, walking hasn't happened for the last three weeks, due to a nasty virus which put me out of commission. However, I hope to start back again this next week.

Emmie, there's a lot of nuance to the whole thing:
Masters men and women (that's us) need to weight train.

In order to obtain the maximum benefits fo the time spent training, you absolutely need to hit 2 grams of protein for every kilogram of Lean Body Mass.

Supplements such as Whey Protein make hitting these numbers achievable.

Your body utilizes all protein available. The 30 gram limit is "bad science".

there's a guy called More Plates More Dates or MPMD. He's an ex steroid user. He's famous/popular because he's well-informed. He knows how these chemicals work and tells you the dangers but not in an alarmist way. Like in a reasonably alarmist way.

I'm not really recommending him. But if you want to know what some banned chemical will do to you, MPMD is your guy.

228 one story he tells is his project to reduce his estrogen to zero, via illegal chemicals. He did so. He had his testosterone at superphysiological levels and his estrogen at zero.

He became asexual. It turns out that if your estrogen is biologically zero, you lose all interest in sex and become a eunuch.

He's f***ed with hormones and drugs so much he knows stuff like this.
