Leftwing Tech Monopoly Amazon Waits Until After Election to Lay Off 10,000 Workers

Wouldn't want to spoil Joe Biden's claim that we're not in a recession.

They'll be laying off 10,000 people starting sometime before Thanksgiving, sources say. They haven't announced/admitted it yet.

The layoffs come as the tech industry continues to struggle amid a slowing economy, rising interest rates, and stubborn inflation.

Almost like a recession.

Facebook parent Meta and Twitter also laid off thousands of employees this month.

The layoffs will impact Amazon's Alexa business, as well as the company's retail and human resources divisions, according to The Times. Amazon's Alexa group, which produces its Echo hardware and associated software, loses up to $5 billion a year, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing internal documents the paper reviewed.

The 10,000 jobs make up some 1% of Amazon's 1.5 million global workforce. The Times reports that the final number of planned layoffs could change between now and when they're announced. Amazon announced a hiring freeze on Nov. 3.

A Twitter employee got sassy and disrespectful to Elon Musk on Twitter today.

fired1.jfif

fired2.jfif

fired3.jfif

I mean, way to let everyone know you're a potential internal saboteur.

People in tech need to change their attitude from "I can smacktalk my boss because LOL even if he fires me I'll have another job lined up by next week" to "I better make sure I keep my job because the industry is going through a slimdown/consolidation phase."

I linked this great article, "The End of the Email Caste," on Friday. Check it out if you missed it.

[T]here is another aspect of the Musk takeover that has little to do with free speech or even ideology--although it has a great deal to do with the class interests of Big Tech censors. As a recession looms, Silicon Valley is shedding the non-essential workers it acquired when unlimited venture funding made turning a profit an afterthought. Musk happens to have taken the helm at Twitter just as this reality is asserting itself. In this sense, the revolt against his leadership is the last stand of a cohort of activist hangers-on who are about to find themselves unemployed.

...

Many "unicorn" tech startups began with a few engineers and a product they wanted to sell, but over the past decade-plus, they have accrued a bloated bureaucracy of "equity"-minded h.r. activists, ESG-savvy consultants, affinity-group mavens, climate-change specialists, and many other email-caste hangers-on. Now that times are turning bad, tech companies can no longer afford to sustain a massive "court" of professional-class nobility, paying sinecures to sons and daughters of the good and the great who don't know how to code or crunch numbers, but know how to write emails, hold useless meetings, and talk about diversity and inclusion.

...

The people who worked "on climate" at Twitter, now being given the ax by the perfidious Elon Musk, are openly complaining that they won't be able to find jobs anywhere else in this economy. They are, of course, right to worry. One of the biggest and least-talked-about social questions in the West is how to economically provide for our own modern version of France's impecunious nobles: that is, how to prop up high-status people who can't really do much economically productive work.

YaBoiZach was watching TikToks from laid-off Facebook employees, and he says that almost none of the laid-off people had any technical skills of any kind-- they're all in "soft" stuff like "climate," "human rights," recruiting, "diversity officer," morale boosting.

He said one laid off woman was a "Niceness Maestro." Now, that may sound like an exaggeration, and I'm sure it is an exaggeration, but I have heard of positions like "Director of Niceness" or the like at these companies.

No, I can't link these TikToks -- TikTok's search function is terrible. I looked for them and failed.

He calls these thousands upon thousands of absolutely useless, skill-less profit-vampires "human bloatware." Which was actually Brian Stelter's official job title at CNN, and look what happened to him.

Many of which were recruited in the aftermath of #MeToo, and then George Floyd, and of course after Trump's election -- to serve as the #Resistance in tech.

But you can't sustain Trump-level Human Bloatware in a Joe Biden Austerity Economy. Congratulations, #Resistance -- you said "You're fired" to yourselves.

Good, on balance. Money-losing operations subsidized because "we'll figure out how to monetize it some day" are going to be at high risk as continue through this recession and its higher interest rates. Amazon is often barely profitable and burning billions on Alexa is probably not all that sensible. Burning money on HR is almost always a waste. I dunno what "retail" means.

Okay, fair enough. But let's translate it, shall we?
* The app is too big and does too much that isn't related to the user experience because we spent years dumping new features that aren't important into it because Product Management was incompetent or was responding only to a handful of high-dollar or high-status users (that last is an assumption on my part, but I've seen this play out too many times)
* The app is poorly programmed. We have a lot of bugs and we don't fix them.
* The app is synchronous in too many operations, and operations are blocking, despite what I said in the prior message.

In other words: it's poorly-managed trash and the emphasis from product management has been on feature growth rather than stability, speed or code quality and it has become a disastrous user experience as a result because everyone involved is asleep at the switch, incompetent or both.

84 The people who worked "on climate" at Twitter, now being given the ax by the perfidious Elon Musk, are openly complaining that they won't be able to find jobs anywhere else in this economy. They are, of course, right to worry. One of the biggest and least-talked-about social questions in the West is how to economically provide for our own modern version of France's impecunious nobles: that is, how to prop up high-status people who can't really do much economically productive work.
++++
It goes way beyond this. It isn't just the HR waste, the feel-good (unless you're a deplorable) equity waste, the climate waste, etc. - it permeates everything. Outside of the universally-useless teams like those, almost every group could be trimmed by 5% at a minimum. There are also generally way too many layers of management.

If you don't come up with new stuff or pointless redesigns, or features nobody wants but sound techy and impressive, people start to wonder just what it is you do around here, anyway.

Do people really think that the forces that (1) cheat openly and (2) cover up the cheating (aka, the media) will do absolutely nothing if conservatives, and especially MAGA conservatives, start copying those tactics? The media will proudly uphold their usual double-standard, and the GOP will lose because they will allow their votes to be disqualified.

The only way forward is paper ballots and same day voting, with few if any exceptions.

The odds are probably higher on Apple's spy device because Apple users are more fixated on the idea of tech than its value and importance, let alone menace.

But Apple is related in another way. If you went by the portrayal of Apple in popular culture, you'd think that its the industry leader. I mean, if you went by Android designers you'd think so too, because they keep copying Apple stuff onto their phones, no matter how little users want it.

120 Jesus fashioned a whip made of cords, by his own hand, and used said whip to drive the moneychangers out of the Temple, all while berating them for their sin of defiling the Temple. Flipped over all of their tables, sending their coin scattering hither and yon.

Jesus was *not* "being nice". But He, being Holy, the Son of God, never sinned, was always without sin, and was only Righteous and Holy before The Throne.

What we saw was Christ's Righteous Anger, and the literal fist of an angry God, in action. NOT "sin" or a losing of temper, etc.

"Nice" ain't all it's cracked up to be, and often, it's just camo for some deeper sin.

They way I read it, it came across more as jumping to conclusions and entitled, neckbeardy snark.

Musk said there are over a thousand batched procedure calls that have to process before using the app. The developer than said, essentially, "no, there are only about 20 operations to load the home page, and they can happen asynchronously."

And then went on to talk about all of the other shit the app does, and how a lot of it has to wait on the network to complete (e.g., it is synchronous, not asynchronous). The comment wasn't about the feed running slowly, it was about the app running slowly. The developer misread that, assumed it was about the feed (which is what he probably works on), clapped back about it, defeated his own argument, and then got fired for being a prick. I doubt he even realizes that he tore down his own argument in the subsequent tweets.

Yeah but this is misused a lot. Jesus didn't do that because He was a shredded badass with his shirt off beating up on nameless bad guys for a Marvel movie. He wasn't doing it because He was teaching that's how we should handle our opponents or enemies.

He was doing that because it was blasphemy, it was a violation of His Father's House, and the glory of God is the ultimate, primary purpose of all reality. It is the ONLY time in the entire four gospels that Jesus was angry and violent. Because that is how much God's name and glory meant to Him.

234 My guess is that it will now take AZ about 6 or 8 years to clean up the Hobbs mess - businesses and retirees will leave in mass droves and it will the desert will reclaim it again. AZ is without Los Vegas or Reno or Disney and beaches, which allowed NV or Fla to survive exclusively on tourists without having to attract retired residents for decades - and thus keep the mob/Dem ran politicos in power. Phoenix draw for tourist is like Sand Diego, one and done.

Expect to see some very conservative business-person elected governor in 2028 or 2030 - long after the placed has been cleared out by corrupt politicos and everyone who invested in retirement and business in metro areas have long since lost all their money. Then, and only then, will some review of the earlier elections of 2020's happen and it will be "yeah, har har, they were all corrupt, of course! What can you do?"

They could, but they won't, for two reasons.
First, they're above it.

Second, the pay scale for Amazon seasonal employees is $18/ with a bonus that can bring the total to $21/hr (based on some cursory web searching). So at standard workload of 40 hours per week, that comes out to $720 - $840 per week. If the people being fired were earning $30,000 or more per quarter (which is $120k per year) - which most of them probably were - Washington State unemployment benefits are $999 per week, or 19% higher than the higher pay scale and 38.75% higher than the lower pay scale. The math on that is easy, and it totals to "take the unemployment and look for something that pays more."

254 Taking exit polls with a grain of salt of course

Here is how 18-29 yo voted in each state, Dems won everywhere but the margins varied by a lot. This is CNN data.

AZ: 70-26
NV: 64-31
FL: 57-41
OH: 59-41

And this is 30-44 yo

AZ: 58-37 Dems
NV: 60-36 Dems
FL: 50-48 Dems
OH: 50-49 Reps

Florida and Ohio did substantially better with young voters than Nevada and Arizona. My guess is because NV and AZ young voters are more Hispanic than in FL and OH. But whatever the reason, that’s a good part of the reason why FL/OH went deep red and NV/AZ went blue.

Saying it’s all fraud ignores data like this.

I think, as an outsider looking in that Elon values FUNCTION over bloat as far as twitter is concerned. There is no excuse for features that cause bloat or slowness ESPECIALLY if they're not often used. The company should have been benchmarking this stuff and tracking whether or not new features were going to create huge lag in the system. The fact that the established engineers (like the one complaining over twitter) weren't pushing for this is a huge warning sign. Their workshop has ONE MAJOR PRODUCT and it is twitter itself. if Twitter does not work the way it is supposed to, then they're not doing their jobs.

That's an assumption. We don't know whether he was pushing for bug resolution and performance enhancement rather than feature development or not. I've seen many times (and been in the position myself) where someone makes the "we need to retire some of this technical debt and stabilize things" argument repeatedly but Product Management says, "fuck you, we're pursuing more features because of X" (where X is "we're not at feature parity with the competition" or "we need support this next-gen technology" or "key customers demand this feature and will walk if we don't produce it" or similar).

I'm not shocked that colleges would get rid of libraries. Research material is largely on the internet. Before my hospital got rid of our librarians, we could call down a topic, and within an hour a pile of articles would be delivered to your desk. 385 What's critical about the golden calf story is this, and its often overlooked:

They weren't worshipping an idol, they were worshipping Jehovah. They just were using the statue because they were used to having statues to worship and were scared. Aaron probably thought he was losing control and the Israelites would wander off, probably try to get back to Egypt where at least they had food and shelter and it was predictable.

Its a tale of false worship, to appease the masses, in our own shape, rather than what God demands. The kind of worship with mass appeal that is easy and comfortable in our culture.

The trick is that when you hire a recruiter you make sure that they don't have a degree that includes the word "Studies" in it's title, like "Gender Studies".

Yup. The key problem - and it is also common on finance teams in various companies - making a support function into an executive function. Personnel/HR is a support function, as are finance, IT and various other groups. They are there to support the business by getting paychecks out or selecting benefits options or keeping the computers working or organizing the budget, etc. - not make decisions about corporate policy or direction. Letting them move into executive function is a tremendous mistake.

399 385. I thought the calf was Moloch/Baal

Posted by: cn at November 14, 2022 05:14 PM (Zzbjj)

400 385 What's critical about the golden calf story is this, and its often overlooked:

They weren't worshipping an idol, they were worshipping Jehovah. They just were using the statue because they were used to having statues to worship and were scared. Aaron probably thought he was losing control and the Israelites would wander off, probably try to get back to Egypt where at least they had food and shelter and it was predictable.

Its a tale of false worship, to appease the masses, in our own shape, rather than what God demands. The kind of worship with mass appeal that is easy and comfortable in our culture.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at November 14, 2022 05:12 PM (Ivdso)

Not strictly correct:

He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”

Iow, they took the object as God. Frequently confused by Protestants, but the potential thing that would be idolatrous in Catholicism would be the Eucharist, not a picture or movie or artwork.

Actually - it will be the mob that turns on Dems first - losing their pigeons and the cash flow they represent in these Western areas like Scottsdale casinos and convention resorts - once local businesses flee and the cartels and local gangs take over under wacky Soros DA rules approved by Hobbs - is going to make the rank and file union mob bosses start whacking people right and left.

The left out in NV has played ball with the mob ran Unions, Gov Lombardo will, too. Katie Hobbs team is going to find itself buried in unmarked mounds out in the Tuscon desert if they pursue some sort of Abortion Mouse agenda.

405 Once 'Personnel' department morphed in Human Resources? They went from making sure people got their damn check, to decision makes on who was hired... HUGE mistake.

Once, working for a big company, my boss and I decided we wanted to hire someone. We had ignored HR, of course, so we told him to go down to the public-facing HR office on the first floor and fill out the application forms so we could hire him.

We get a phone call five minutes later: "They said they're not hiring, and won't give me the forms."

I called down: "Yes we are hiring. Give him the forms."

It just doesn't make any sense! The movie revolves around a game that is more or less ignored by its participants at will. Why even bother pretending about scores and such when they could've just done pit fighting or something?!

The 'game' was devolving, as was the society around it.

The scene with the well dressed party goers using a torch to destroy trees for laughs.

429 Zuckerberg has learnt a very important corporate responsibility lesson: the customers vote with their wallets and feet when you've constantly ignored. Instead of acting as deep state censor, ignoring customer complaints, removing popular features and replacing them with inferior substitutes and so on will cost you. The situation was further aggravated by his obsession to create the Star trek holodeck which regular people simply didn't care fo.

So I'm indifferent. And it highlights why the neurodiverse need to be strictly gate kept, kept in their lane and order them back to work whenever they propose ideas conflictling with reality.
