Top Story

  • Recessions unmask fraud. (The Economist)

When the economy is bubbling merrily along, you can get away with fudging the books just a little to make it look like things are going better than they are. At least for a while.

But when the macroeconomic soup turns sour, and your financial papercuts turn into open wounds, it's much harder to hide.

    Hence FTX.

  • Is Crypto.com next? (WCCFTech)

Since bank runs on marginal financial schemes are self-fulfilling prophecies, now that you ask the question, the answer is, probably, yes.

  • FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried isn't who you think he is. (CoinGeek)
As Bankman-Fried seduces more wannabe traders into gambling on so-called digital currencies with the lure of free BTC, it's worth remembering that all of these people have an agenda, and it usually involves you losing money to line their pockets.
Okay, we know that. So what?

So that article is from February.

1 Also, overnight lows here in New House City are expecting to nudge freezing this week... Which doesn't sound that unusual except that it's almost summer here down under.

4 And the evening and the morning were the Monday, gawdhelpusall. Howdy to all. I went to my poetry-prose reading event last night . . . and wonder upon wonders, the two women who showed up (with husband in one case, and kids on both) were funny, slim, and attractive. In 21st-century Amerika, all three attributes are rare enough. Here in Da Swamp, those qualities are like, as my mother said her father used to say, "finer than frog hair."

Anyway, they liked my reading, and their short pieces were not nod-off-in-your-seat readings. So a good win.

26 It's 47 F. here. Amusing how the TV weather people advise you to "leave a few minutes early and warm up your car." Not only is that not necessary until you get way down in the temps -- modern oils are fantastic -- it wastes gas; and you'd warm up the car faster by driving it gently for the first few miles. But the local natives think 47 is Yukon-in-January conditions.

I did that with my Benzes in Denver even when temps were in the teens in the early morning. Here, the coldest I've seen in the last 20 years was about 23 F. Modern oils flow easily at much lower temps than that. Engine parts are protected very swiftly. I might give it an extra 10-15 seconds if the temp is well below freezing -- seconds, not minutes -- before I drive off.

Interesting response from MrsVIA at Dave's opening segment concerning democratic micro-targeting, and the lack of an organized GOPe GOTV effort. She suddenly told me that she to had been receiving texts and social media pushes to encourage very specific voting choices on the Democratic side of the ticket.

And just like Dave had said...all I ever got from the Republican side was 'Send us money!!!'

And as Dave stated, the more legit votes one can generate, the less illegal votes one must create to push your opponent into the win column.

84 Idea: Not that it's not votes but ballots that count, what keeps Republicans, Libertarians and Independent from harvesting ballots in blue areas? And Republicans can game the mail in ballot to get 110%, 120%, 200% or more where ever we want. The only limitation is paper and ink. Also we need to pretend to be Chinese and connect up to the voting machines and throw another 90% in the mix. And if anyone complains call them racist election deniers trying to suppress the vote.

Maybe we could see the first libertarian mayor of Philly soon.

One party seeks the destruction of western civilization for its own sake. The other party seeks to make a few bucks off of it, and insulates them against their wilder excesses to keep the system propagating. There is no mechanism or dynamic in that system alone that warrants patience or holding out hope. There is hope to be found perhaps, but not anywhere in the Uniparty framework.

178 Another example of snowflakeiness: Somehow I was copied on an email at work where somebody was complaining about a tour of a college in North Carolina.

". . . [H]onestly . . . I wondered how [the tour guide] treated the students of Winston Salem State as her comments were demeaning. Comments such as how from working at an HBCU she understood parents could be very creative with names. Or that because of students hair they had to replace the red leather pads. As well as the comment before getting of the bus that if you have never been on an HBCU campus 'let me tell you it's different.' During the tour at Winston Salem State she continued to talk over the Winston Salem State staff interjecting points that she felt necessary to share." ". . . [A]s a black woman, especially one that not only works at an HBCU but graduated from one, I was offended and uncomfortable."

This stuff sounds like a MadTV sketch, or one on In Living Color.

179 Ed Markey, he of the dumb grin, submarined the proposed new LNG terminal a few years back, and wants to close the Charlestown terminal, while also leading the fight against new overland pipelines into Massachusetts.

He wants his constituents to freeze in the dark. But, that's OK, he has an excuse, which is that he's one of the dumbest people in the US Senate, and doesn't really connect the dots. He's Feddermonster without the stroke excuse. You wonder how the Democrat machine can so reliably cough up furballs like this guy.

188 I have to admit that this morning I woke up with a certain amount of dread in my veins. A lack of optimism more like. Nothing is going well in this country. Professionally my job is on thin ice as my company's stock has dropped from $104/share to just under $30/share. We're shedding headcount faster than I can keep up with and as one of the higher earners in a non-billable department, I'm keeping my head on a swivel.

All this with the prospect of a renovation that the Mrs. and I are waiting on an estimate for - knowing that we won't be able to afford it because inflation has neutralized our discretionary budget.

Diesel hit $6.50/gallon here over the weekend. I couldn't believe it. I've got two 5 gallon jerry cans of it in my garage for "break open in case of emergency". Didn't realize they would be investments.

I have found Flonase (or the generic equivalent) to be a great helper for me. I started getting seasonal allergies when I moved, and it knocks them back.

The brand name is expensive. The generic is still somewhat pricey but way cheaper. The active ingredient you're looking for is "fluticasone."

It's a nasal spray. One spritz up each nostril. Some rapid relief but give it 2-3 days to really hit its stride. I use it during both spring and autumn.

199 On the topic of the thread, I still hate Windows 11 and the new MS Office version for this year.

Between the muted colors of taskbar icon blinking (It used to be a very obvious orange, now it's a much less-visible orange-gray), the default behavior of the Outlook reminders popup no longer being always on top (I have fixed that) and the fact that the new Outlook notification sound is a very brief, not at all obtrusive little muted "ding" noise, I missed three appointments last week.

I have fixed the reminder window behavior, but I want the old Outlook notification sound - the one I've trained myself to listen for - back. I want the taskbar blinking icons to be visible again. For that matter, I'd like to be able to move the taskbar back to the edge of the screen where I want it.

This "upgrade" to 11 and the new O365 version has been a productivity destroyer for me.
