17 Happy Veterans Day. Used to go out for the 'free meal' at Appleby's, but my family is in Covid quarantine after getting back from Disney World. The little ones seem to be okay, but many of the adults are quite sick. Not hospital sick, but fever, aches and pains, etc. All had the shot before traveling.

21 I didn't go on the expedition to Disney. It cost Tom about 4K just to get some of the family to Florida. The rest was paid by Tom's daughter and husband for their kids (3). The whole family must have spent a bundle on that trip, I can't afford that.

30 Morning, all! 'Tis Friday at last. Stirling the big black kitten is particular frisky this morning; I wonder why. Dagny is eating, but still sniffling. I hope they can find what's wrong when I take her to the vet tomorrow.

As for me, I gave myself a cramp in my calf at some point early this morning -- a charley horse, they used to call it -- on the same side as the fading leg pain of the last month. Grrrr. I'd planned to wash the car this afternoon on the way home from work, but if I'm still limping, that'll have to wait.

33 Maybe for a change I could light a candle for all the poor guys who died in Vietnam so that McDonald's could build restaurants in Ho Che Ming city and Hanoi. Along with Burger King and KFC. I was fortunate to have stayed
out of that place and spent my time in Germany 'guarding the border'. My unit did end up in Vietnam in the late 60's, early 70's.

35 Veterans Day, Armistice Day!

Maybe if I work things right I can visit my favorite diner for breakfast on Sunday. And I can kill a second bird. They display paintings by local artists for sale on one wall. There's a "Sassy Giraffe" painting which is actually very good, for $60. It would make a good b'day present for Miss Linda; I've seen her admiring it, and I know she likes giraffes. Or almost any animal for that matter.

38 I've heard the flu is quite bad this year as well.

No surprise the COVID shots didn't "work" - the ads all say that the newest one also protects against the "original" COVID strain.

Which tells you how dumb/gullible people are these days - that strain died off about 2 years ago, never to be seen again.

I've been reading a bit of the details of the history of time standards and time zones in the US and the world. What prompted that was my astronomy programs, which display true local solar time, local mean solar time, and others.

In the old days, time was entirely a local thing. Clocks and watches weren't all that accurate over the long term. You set your watch at high noon, when the sun was over the meridian. That's how towns and localities did it for ages.

It didn't matter much, cause no one could travel or communicate fast enough for it to make any difference. Then came railroads and the telegraph. The world got smaller.

Trains collided and killed people because of mismatched time standards. They realized that everyone needed to have their watches synchronized, or things would get messy.

Also with knowledge that the whole exchange wad just a way for its owner to launder money to his other company, how is it going to stay open when they guy should be spending the next 30 years in prison?

Had a great great (great?) uncle who died at 19 the day after the treaty should have gone in to effect, but then they pushed it back, so fighting continued.

Think of the 25 days of supply as a tank. You're pumping into it, and drawing out of it. The level is such that if the input stopped, you'd have just 25 days of reserve in the tank.

That's getting pretty low, you want far more than that for a good cushion if something bad happens.

Nov. 18th, 1883, was when the US first adopted the 4 time zone convention. All clocks were then synchronized.

This was not a federal standard or law. That didn't come until 1918. This was "railroad time" being imposed on the nation. An by agreement amongst all the states, basically.

They were forced to. It was too messy otherwise. There was opposition, I just read some quotes from the "tyranny of railroad time", someone objecting to the railroads imposing their time on people.

Exactly. Tucker first got it wrong, then ace covered the Tucker storyline, so I explained in the comments that the '25 day supply' was only correct if all diesel production in the US stopped 100%, no imports, yada yada.

To his credit, he added my remarks to his post. Still, there have been some spot shortages depending on location in the US. Those areas like the Eastern seaboard have been shutting down refineries and rely on eveeel pipelines to get diesel. Oops.

Got to time.gov and see the map of the current time zones. You'll see some oddball stuff. This is why the proposal to got to permanent DST will never fly. In the most western reaches of some of those time zones, in the higher latitudes, the sun wouldn't rise until 9AM in the dead of winter.

They actually tried that, back in '72 I think, under Tricky Dick. Everyone was in favor it, 72% popular support for permanent DST (it would save energy, they said). Then came winter, and they changed back.

The Senate passed permanent DST earlier this year. The House hasn't acted. If they do, the same thing will happen.

He's invited me to a prose/poetry reading event Sunday at a local coffee shop, unfortunately in an area where I'm worried about my car being vandalized or stolen. It'll be fun to go and read something, but it gets dark early now, so I won't want to stay very late.

Best resolution I can divine. "Dinner" is the biggest meal of the day. If that meal is traditionally at Noon, then Dinner is the noon meal. If that biggest meal is in the evening, the that's dinner.

In my neck of the woods, Dinner was thus the midday meal. So, breakfast, dinner, supper.

In the others it would be, breakfast, lunch, dinner.

If it were up to me, we'd scrap UTC for civil time, and go to UT1, which is the closest to the old GMT, mean solar time over the prime meridian.

UTC is a hybrid between UT1 and TAI, the latter being atomic time. THis is reason for leap seconds, which is a mess.

The trouble with UT1 is the second there is sort of "rubber", it's astronomical time, not constant proper time. If you need nanosecond precision timing, use atomic time, but Civil Time should be astronomical.

That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it.

But they are serious. These people are serious about killing you and assuming total control.

Its sort of like those trigger words that hypnotists use to get their clients quickly back into a trance. They just say "Climate", maybe some other words like "justice" or "change" might decorate it, but simply saying "Climate" automatically takes a vast majority of people, throws them into a trance and what comes next is the hypnotist inserting suggestions and the client/mark imagines things on top of that.

That is where most of these fantasies and fairy-tales about catastrophic damage comes from - people making crap up because their hypnotized conscience drives them there.

210 Good morning folks.

Did a quick look at the House seats left to decide and I find 13 seats that the GOP is either leading, or I have some knowledge that the GOP candidate is going to win even though technically behind.

I'm sure 1 or 2 of those will end up going Dem in the end, maybe CO-8 or one of the CA seats. I also assume that CA-13 will not go GOP, despite the current lead because I know something of the internals.

That means final count will be 221 or 222. That matches predictions from multiple sources.

Given the large positive in the +R vs the number of seats gained, it looks more like redistricting must have really cost the Rs. Because of urban concentration, typically Rs have been able to take Congress with a slight loss in the popular vote.
