"The Email Caste's Last Stand"

How about a happy thread?

As you probably know -- or maybe I have the great pleasure of being the first one to tell you -- "Meta," which is what FaceBook calls itself now because "FaceBook" has the brand approval rating of NAMBLA or The Lincoln Project, just laid off 11,000 of its least useful employees, which, considering that these are "workers" paid to play ping-pong and drink lattes all day in an industry devoted to goldbricking, check-hammering and clock-watching, is really saying something.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg addressed employees virtually on Wednesday around 1pm ET, hours after the company announced it is laying off 13% of its staff.

A Meta employee impacted by today's layoffs provided this video to NBC News.

In a letter early Wednesday morning, Zuckerberg said Meta is making reductions in every organization but that recruiting will be disproportionately affected since the company plans to hire fewer people in 2023. The company extended its hiring freeze through the first quarter with a few exceptions, Zuckerberg said.

Impacted employees will receive 16 weeks of pay plus two additional weeks for every year of service, Zuckerberg said. Meta will cover health insurance for six months.

Here's a transcript of what he said in the video segment:

I know there must be just a range of different human emotions. I want to say up front that I take full responsibility for this human decision.

I'm the human founder and CEO, I'm responsible for the human health of our human company, for our direction, and for deciding how we execute that, including human things like this, and this was ultimately my human call.

And it was one of the hardest calls that I've had to make in the 18 earth years of running the company. And a lot of why it's hard is, obviously, it has a big impact on your human lives, but also for our peaceful, non-xenocidal mission. We're losing human terran people who... you've really put your human heart and imaginary ha-ha soul into this place.

Each of you generic labor units is talented and passionate, and each of you has played a role in making Meta the success that it is. No matter what subcreature team you may have worked on, each of you played a role in contributing to the products that billions of zoo people use to connect every standard terran day.

I sprinkled in some words like "human" and "earth" and "terran" to better approximate the tone of Zuckerberg's delivery.

Slate whines that the firings at Meta will mean that people only in the country due to H1-B visas sponsored by Meta will have to go back to their countries of origin.

They similarly whined about that at Twitter.

I don't know what to tell you. It's a contract for employment in a foreign country, not a grant of citizenship. That's how the contract works.

By Malcolm Kyeyune, the end of the "email caste" that has flourished in the Courts of High Tech.

[T]here is another aspect of the Musk takeover that has little to do with free speech or even ideology--although it has a great deal to do with the class interests of Big Tech censors. As a recession looms, Silicon Valley is shedding the non-essential workers it acquired when unlimited venture funding made turning a profit an afterthought. Musk happens to have taken the helm at Twitter just as this reality is asserting itself. In this sense, the revolt against his leadership is the last stand of a cohort of activist hangers-on who are about to find themselves unemployed.

You can't have Trumpian levels of DEI overstaffing in a Biden economy.

Musk paid $44 billion to acquire Twitter, and all indications are that the platform isn't worth anything close to that. Once he got access to the company's finances, the Tesla boss realized it was losing millions of dollars every day, and that many of its employees weren't doing much work at all. So he proceeded to do what most executives would do in this situation: He laid off some of his workers.

The abrupt firing of thousands of employees solicited a new wave of outrage from Musk's haters. But even if you remove him from the equation, Twitter couldn't have gone much longer without massive layoffs. The same thing is happening across Silicon Valley. Last week, the online-payments company Stripe announced it would cut 14 percent of its workforce, as did the rideshare giant Lyft; Facebook parent company Meta looks poised to do the same. [Did the same, as mentioned above. -- ace] Like Wile E. Coyote, tech companies ran off the cliff long ago; only now is economic gravity starting to assert itself.

Many "unicorn" tech startups began with a few engineers and a product they wanted to sell, but over the past decade-plus, they have accrued a bloated bureaucracy of "equity"-minded h.r. activists, ESG-savvy consultants, affinity-group mavens, climate-change specialists, and many other email-caste hangers-on. Now that times are turning bad, tech companies can no longer afford to sustain a massive "court" of professional-class nobility, paying sinecures to sons and daughters of the good and the great who don't know how to code or crunch numbers, but know how to write emails, hold useless meetings, and talk about diversity and inclusion.

Golgifrinchan Space Ark B is ready for take-off.

He compares these useless hangers-on to the officer corps of the pre-Revolution French Army, hopelessly clogged with the useless second sons of the talentless nobility, who could not be fired, because they needed jobs and had nowhere else to go.

A similar dynamic is operative in America today. The people who worked "on climate" at Twitter, now being given the ax by the perfidious Elon Musk, are openly complaining that they won't be able to find jobs anywhere else in this economy. They are, of course, right to worry.

One of the biggest and least-talked-about social questions in the West is how to economically provide for our own modern version of France's impecunious nobles: that is, how to prop up high-status people who can't really do much economically productive work.

Instapundit often mentions an "overproduction of elites" being a marker for social upheaval but I can't see how you're an "elite" if you literally have no useful skills by which to put food into your mouth without the intervention of state or corporate welfare programs.

...

In an earlier column, I ended with the following question: "Gen. Mark Milley infamously testified before a congressional hearing that he wanted to understand 'white rage.' But who right now is prepared for progressive, multiracial, demisexual rage, as the core social groups driving progressivism in America are hit the hardest by layoffs and the end of Silicon Valley subsidies?" That rage is no longer coming--it's here.

Who the hell is this guy? He's amazeballs.

But, in his first email to staff after acquiring the social-media company, Musk told workers he’s expecting them back in the office at least 40 hours a week.

It means people within a caste that normally get sinecures. They do administrative work for the government(in the US we've kind of expanded this to some large corporations) and have nice cushy careers. This caste is created by highly centralized government, which needs a large bureaucracy to operate. So all these graduates we're minting that are otherwise pretty useless, the liberal arts majors, are the "overproduced elites".

1) She was **still** working in tech support, despite the fact that she was far, far, better than that;

2) She had to live thirty miles from her job, and could only eat rice, because she was paid so poorly;

3) And that the evil CEO of Yelp should promote her out of tech support, and pay her a lot better.

To her shock, she was immediately fired.

Astute observers of her social media feeds noted that she lived in an apartment by herself, regularly cooked gourmet meals, and ordered high-end whisky delivered to her office.

Last I heard, she had moved to Brooklyn, and was now a pro-Antifa "journalist".

My company leadership wanted to go back to the office full time, but found that many employees would quit or switch to a competitor that is work remote only. So we are doing a hybrid. Anyway, what Musk sees with this move to have workers be full time at the office is one of two things - they see Twitter employment as a status symbol and will not leave or the other part is that only the devoted employees will stay. Kill or Be Killed by Col. Rex Applegate has a whole interesting section where he discusses what he learned as a security consultant to Latin American governments about rioting. Later, I saw that Israelis used some of his tactics against the Intifada types. Such as using a sniper with.22 LRs to wound but not kill their leaders. The wound would need attention but not be life threatening. Essentially removing and punishing leaders from the fray but not allowing them to be martyrs.

So far the fediverse, which by and large despises "journalist" LARPers, has been having a field day mocking them. They might have blocked the "Nazi/bigot/hate/troll" instances (i.e., 80% of the fediverse) but even just knowing that real people are out there openly mocking them and there isn't a damn thing they can do about it has them seething and coping. (And in some cases desperately trying to mold the fediverse itself into their Twitter clone hugbox, proving once again we aren't dealing with particularly clever people)

They'll likely all be gone by January, so get your hits in while you can! (If you're not already there, you'll want to avoid Mastodon instances because Mastodon is hot garbage. Sign up on a Pleroma one instead)

Once again, almost always from Oxbridge graduates and public school alum networks. Yes Minister repeatedly makes fun of the fact that the minister only went to the LSE while his civil servant advisors went to Oxford. There is a terrific episode in the sequel Yes Prime Minister based on a true situation. The prime minister learns the head of MI5 was a Russian Agent but had been cleared in the past by a security check by his current civil servant advisor. Deals a lot with the old school tie and that sort.

"Trump’s pre-election unexpected attack on DeSantis may have turned off a few thousand independents and Republicans from voting for Trump-affiliated candidates. And his pre-midterm boast that he would likely run for president may have scared — and energized — some last-minute, hard-core anti-Trumpers and Democrats to go out to vote."
_______

To be clear, I think Trump was the greatest president this country had in a very long time, he arrived at the right time and showed the way on how to make America great again. 293 Part of Meta's problem was that they refused to vet, or police their advertisers. For every legitimate ad, there were another half dozen that were promising to sell you the same thing for 1/10th the cost.

3 pounds of colossal king crab legs? 19.99. Double your order, and it's only 25$! A mill/drill/lathe machine with laser cutter which retails for over 1500 dollars, just 69.95 from a FB advertiser that just set up shop a few minutes ago.

A miniature 4 cylinder 4 stroke Toyo nitro engine that retails for 599 dollars, just 49 dollars on FB. And as we head into the Christmas shopping season, they're popping up again.

311 I'm listening to the Q&A Musk, Robin Wheeler, and Yoel Roth did on the 9th. I think it's interesting given Wheeler and Roth both left Twitter.

First impressions: Wheeler very strongly believes ad sales will only flourish if all content advertisers dislike doesn't exist on the platform. She wants details and she's pushing for specifics on brand safety.

Yoel has very little to add. He seems like a yes man and when Musk asks him to weigh in, he echoes what Musk just said or said in a previous forum.

Musk believes strongly that increasing the cost of bad behavior will reduce the bad behavior. His vision is that trolls will not want to lose the account they paid for, so they will moderate themselves. Also, he anticipates that sensitive users will turn off comments from unverified users, so they'll only see content from people moderating themselves.

------

I was briefly in a transient company at Ft. Dix. There was a guy who had, by some means, obtained a second field jacket with some other name on it.

Generally, transient companies are not well organized. People come and go all of the time. Sometimes even the NCO's are transients

Anyhow, this guy kept swapping out field jackets, so, periodically, when his alternate persona failed to show up for some assigned detail (the alternate persona being down at the PX, drinking milkshakes), he would just swap jackets out until the heat died down. It was funny as hell. The poor hapless NCO-du-jour walking through the ranks looking for 'Johnson'.

And they are hiring.

482 It was a redhead this time, dour, unblinking, argumentative, evasive, with skin like alabaster speckled with mud as though she had been walking behind a horse-cart on a bad road for three miles. She went to the capitol city and got a job talking to people who asked her questions they knew she wouldn't answer but asked anyway so that she could tell them what her boss wanted them to write in the newspaper without saying anything that was worth a tinker's damn and they knew it and so did she and the charade went on, daily. She frustrated curiosity. She appeared sexless, or at least without human warmth. She was one of the homunculus oddities that a modern-day Rome will produce by the bushelful.

550 I was just talking with my financial guys on Tuesday, and said that Meta would be following in Elon's steps next. I just didn't know how soon.

If I worked at FB, I think the fact that they built a bunch of multi million dollar campuses in East Palo Alto and shuttered them before they were even fully open would be a huge clue to update my Linkedin profile. I mean, how long can a company sustain racquetball courts, smoothie bars and 5 star chefs to make soy and kale thermidor and edamame and quinoa au gratin for thousands of people that only show up to work for free food and a shower?

Every fucking time I had to go into those places I marveled at the thinking that had to be going on. And this is barely the start for Meta, the only reason they're alive is they happened to buy Instagram. Sadly, google can probably float their boat forever. But I'd sure like to see that change.

I may have mentioned this on one of the Saturday Movie Threads, but in Counsellor at Law (1933), John Barrymore plays a Jewish lawyer who was born poor. He has since become so successful that his office is in the tallest building in the world - the Empire State! Of course, 99% of his staff are the best at what they do, but does keep one long-time staffer with him, even though now she spends half of the work day in the ladies' room. Presumably, he can afford it.

611 I would like states to start passing a residency requirement for voting. Have to be a resident for at least 13 months before you can vote in state or local elections.

I remember hearing about a New York man who moved as a child with his family to San Antonio in the early 1900s. He grew up there and opened a general store. He married a local woman of the Baptist church and became an elder. When the Depression hit he was always open handed with his neighbors, allowing them to pay for groceries as they could, employing the children for a nickel an hour, though he could scarce afford it. When WWII started he was local morale officer and was on the draft board. He led the rubber and scrap drives. He had a half a dozen children of his own who became fine members of the community. When he died in the 1960s, the entire town turned out for his funeral. They erected an monument at the cemetery with the epitaph: 'He was almost one of us.'.

MSNBC says 222 GOP, another source says 221 when all is said and done. Me, I believe we wait and see.

But, remember that the counting is often carried out in red friendly local governments, not the central government. Even in Maricopa County, the GOP has a majority of county commissioners and the county recorder supervising the vote is a GOP member. They might be McCain types but probably a bit scared of pulling what they did in 2020. Other counties outside of the one with Tucson are mostly red and unlikely to try to screw Lake.

I think the era of endless government employment is reaching a close. The money aint there for new mouths and the existing employees dont want to share a shrinking pie with newbies. We are heading into a recession with inflation that shrinks revenues while expenditures go up. Even states that can run at a deficit like CA are going to find that financing new projects is a road to bankruptcy in short order at these interest rates.

Thanks to Spend Em while You got Em federal government, there will be little if any stimulus as the increased borrowing with simply spike t bills rates negating the spending effect.

We are now entering the nonvirtuous cycle of stagflation with too much societal and government debt.

Credit for that concept should more properly be given to Peter Turchin, but while what is said here is true, the more important point is how these so-called "elite" THINK that they're elite. The possession of a BA in stuff like "critical queer studies" from a second- or third-rate college (with a cost of $200K) to them is a signifier of "enlightenment" and superiority over those useless "bitter clingers" and "deplorables", and entitles them to a Fortune 500 corporate job as coordinator of diversity, equity, and sustainability.

If such jobs are not provided, well then they'll all go down to the demonstration to vent their share of abuse, singing "we're gonna vent our frustration", and light a 50-amp fuse otherwise.
