#TheSnap: Half of Twitter's " " " Workers " " " Are Unemployed, Starting Now (9 am Pacific Time)

#Twitter sacks entire marketing
and communications department in #India...

#TwitterLayoffs #ElonMuskBuyTwitter

Steffie from the D
@steffie_steff

Liberal twitter employees soon to learn their pronouns are was/were #TwitterLayoffs

Cry moar, brokedown old bitch:

Geraldo Rivera
@GeraldoRivera

Elon Musk has declared All-Out war on his former staff. At 9am Pacific time, Massive Layoffs go into affect at Twitter. With no formal notice and gut-wrenching efficiency, Musk and his inner circle have eliminated about half of its pre-Elon workforce. 3,700 Twitter jobs gone.

In response to the crushing, sudden layoff of half the Twitter staff, employees have filed a massive class action lawsuit claiming Musk's draconian layoffs are in violation of California and federal law, which prevent mass layoffs without 60 days notice.

Fired Twitter workers are asking the federal court to issue order requiring a more orderly & compassionate approach under the Worker Adjustment & Retraining Act. Meantime, Musk has unleashed a ruthless campaign to cut billions on bloated infrastructure, cutting employee laptops.

Geraldo cheered at people being fired because they didn't want a "leaky" vaccine which did not vaccinate against getting or transmitting the disease and which may have health consequences the political-bureaucratic-medical complex refuses to admit.

Will Chamberlain suggested what occurred to me-- just tell these malignant Noserings they will be laid off starting two months from now, and tell them not to come into work until then. You have to pay them, yes, but you'd pay them some kind of severance anyway. Probably six weeks, to seem generous? This two months' pay without work will be their severance.

Lisa Bloom
@LisaBloom

Hey Twitter employees getting laid off tomorrow! IMPORTANT INFO from a CA employment attorney (me):

CA's "WARN" law requires Twitter to give you 60 days notice of a massive layoff.

A layoff of 50+ employees within a 30 day period qualifies.

I know you didn't get that notice.

Do these people really think the World's Richest Man doesn't have lawyers?

Will Chamberlain
@willchamberlain

For five years conservatives on Twitter have been operating with a sword of Damocles over their head, wondering if this is the day they will lose their account for an arbitrary reason

Now, Twitter's employees can understand how that feels

#TwitterLayoffs

HUMBLY YOURS,
@EthanVanSciver

These privileged, censorious, election-influencing balloon heads are getting fired today.

Wonderful. Love it.

#TwitterLayoffs

Robby Starbuck
@robbystarbuck

I don't have sympathy for people who have censored Republicans, helped destroy our country by pushing COVID lockdowns, hid news stories that didn't fit their narrative and supported firing people if they didn't get the vaccine. They earned every bit of this. #TwitterLayoffs

bidenadmintopipelineworkers.jpg

Here's a video of Jen Psaki attempting to defend that statement, claiming laid-off pipeline workers are going to find "green jobs" at some unspecified future time at some unspecified company.

NY Post:

White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Monday mocked a reporter who asked when workers on the canceled Keystone XL pipeline would get "green jobs" promised by President Biden.

It's expected that up to 11,000 jobs will be lost following Biden's day-one decision to immediately shut down construction of the pipeline that was supposed to carry oil from Canada to Texas -- leaving South Dakotans reeling and 1,000 people immediately out of work.

"Where is it that they can go for their green job?" Fox News reporter Peter Doocy asked Psaki at her Monday afternoon press briefing, referring to Biden's promise to create good-paying union jobs in the green energy sector as his administration attempts to end the nation's reliance on fossil fuels.

"That is something the administration has promised and there is now a gap so I'm just curious when that happens, when those people can count on that?" Doocy added.

"Well, I'd certainly welcome you to present your data of all the thousands and thousands of people who won't be getting a green job," Psaki snarked. "Maybe next time you're here you can present that."

But let's all cry for the bitter, venomous Noserings and the Neuratypical Non-Binary thought destroyers.

Most Twitter dismissed employees will find work, maybe in the Central Plains as cowboys, or the mines of West Virginia. Possibly working on the rivers, pushing barges. Damn, that was one fine gummy.

I'll have what he's having

same6people.jpg

This is... true. Twitter believes that anyone who follows right-leaning people is being "programmed" by a "bubble" of mutually reinforcing propaganda, so they flood your mentions with... the most hideously low-brow propaganda by full-time leftwing Twitter propagandists. Who repeat the same propaganda that is blasted into your face 24/7 by the propaganda media, only these people add in stuff like "the unvaccinated should be put in camps and starved to death."

Twitter believes -- or believed -- this would deprogram us and understand that deranged leftwing propaganda is truth.

So those people are being fired now. But they want your sympathy.

Ron Fillopovic, or Fillikowski, whichever, who claims he's an "ex-Republican" but I've literally never heard of him until Twitter began spamming his every nasty piece-of-shit brainvomit into my feed, is in fact one of Twitter's favorite people to force into conservatives' feeds. Hey, he claims he is an "ex-Republican" who is now a bitter radical leftwing Democrat! You guys will listen to him, right?

I had to block him just to stop Twitter from spamming his every fucking propaganda lie into my face every five minutes.

Human Resources hardest hit:

That post is from a few days ago when the belief was he'd fire 75%.

He probably will fire 75%. But he's starting off with 50%.

"declared all-out war?" How does that work, Jerry? The company decided their services were no longer required. On look at the Twitter balance sheet and cashflow position will show you very clearly why. Twitter is a failing enterprise and always has been. The new boss wants to make some money. When a company bleeds cash as fast as Twitter does, something is very, very wrong. Fixing that kind of thing typically comes with personnel and line-of-business cuts.

I've been through it before. It sucks. It isn't "war."

Before I had a chance to respond to tell them to go fuck a chainsaw, one of the high level execs in the company wrote back and said, why are you telling us to pause Twitter but then recommend we advertise on Reddit, which is a cesspool of piss?

I'm actually pushing to pause ads anyway: for Facebook, and shift the budget normally reserved there to Twitter. Get fucked, lefties.

No threats of violence.

OK, I'm done. Can't think of anything else that needs to be "moderated". List of one.

Everything else will take care of itself. Nutcase racists will have no traction with anyone except their own kind (this would be a substantial portion of Twitter users at this point, the kind who are inexplicably labeled "progressive" or "liberal"). People will block each other.

Users will ignore/avoid those who have nothing to offer. Simple. Kind of like, you know, rational market behavior. But I doubt Musk will adopt this approach.

135 Here's what I don't get about the Twitter employees being so upset. This applies not only to Twitter, but to people in other firms. I have the most exposure to tech because that's my industry, but it's very common there.

Musk bought Twitter. Everyone knew before this deal closed that Twitter is a cash furnace with serious operational problems and major cashflow problems. Everyone knew - because he said it - that Musk was going to clean house and make Twitter a *lot* leaner almost immediately. This wasn't a surprise. The signs were all there.

Not to mention, mass layoffs in high tech are *commonplace.* A lot of bigger firms do them annually. Everyone in high tech is working under the Sword of Damocles and we all know it. The last month of the fiscal year is *always* stressful at high tech firms. If you work for one, you *will* be laid off eventually. Everyone knows it. It's a fact of life.

So why the panic? Did they really think they were somehow immune?

The WARN act is probably not going to be a factor anyway. High tech firms, even the stingy ones, are known for generous severance and I doubt Twitter is going to be any different. Other than the people who started this year, I doubt the folks being laid off are getting less than 60 days' severance anyway. WARN will bump up the severance the newer guys will get.

I think expecting Musk alone to reinstate the free and wild Internet era of 1990's to 2010 or so is probably unrealistic. Musk surfs public trends as a businessman rather than trying to counter them.

It is more for societal leaders to abandon the idea that speech equals violence and to do that they will have to purge a lot of intellectuals, bureaucrats, and make it painful for business etc. to engage in censorship.

The default in world history is to restrict speech as political leaders don't like it. Ditto for ethnic and religious groups. The major tell of societal power is who you are not allowed to criticize.

I used to work in a secure facility. The normal means to fire people was to disable their badges. The person would go to badge into the building and it would fail. Off to the main security desk he'd go, then his boss would come up to fire him and take his badge. He'd then be escorted by security to collect his things.

It was brutal, and way worse that what the Twitter folk are going through. Not to mention that the door badge system was unreliable and so oftentimes, your badge just wouldn't work. I never knew whether it was a routine system failure or if that was my last day at work.

212 whig, can't agree, fully, on the fish rots from the head stuff - on this, or anything we see.

It's not (well, wasn't) North Korea or the USSR in the 50s. It (the US) was in fact a pluralistic society, meaning a highly distributed pattern of power and influence.

A zillion different wheels turning here, but to grossly simplify, at almost infinite points along the way, the society, families, etc had choices, power, responsibilities.

To again simplify with one example but I think a decent one - if Miami/Dade and that other FL county's school boards could be - as hopefully they appear to have been - "seized back" by sane parents/voters, in 2022 ...... why didn't anything get done earlier? Those marauding destructive school boards were just as elected, and subject to dismissal by the voters, in 1984 and 1996 and 2010 as they are now.

Disney told IBM that IBM had to keep me on-board an extra two months until Disney had a hire ticket for a new division. IBM agreed. It's just business... IBM was exiting an industry, those of us in it got axed. Oh, well... If these twits are any good they'll find a new gig in a heartbeat.

and there's still not that much new drilling going on. Product pricing is up, but there's still a huge problem getting financing for any new drilling because of all of the roadblocks the Biden administration has thrown up.

So we've got the worst of all possible situations in energy; product pricing soaring, but no gain in employment because Biden is blocking it from happening. Guaranteeing prices go up even more.

253 My point on "moderation" was simply that apart from explicit threats of violence, there is no need to police speech on Twitter. Users have 100% autonomy in whom they follow, what they read, which accounts they block, whether to engage in DMs, etc etc.

"Platforms" aren't responsible for "misinformation", right? If society/guvamint deems it a problem, let them attempt to further eviscerate the constitution's basic protections to do something about it.

I fired one woman on probation and it got ugly. Took her to the conference room, gave her her termination letter and had another employee take her back to her work station to get her stuff. She started screaming, fell on the floor and grabbed her desk and would not let go. She was raving about all sorts of stuff and then claimed she was going to kill herself if we didn't giver her job back. I had the MA's and the ambulance there in less than two minutes. Those amenities started because originally employees at tech firms were expected to work all the time - so you had free food, free laundry pickup, etc. as a way of removing any excuse to leave the office. I worked for a consulting firm that had some frivolous stuff (foosball tables) et. al. in the office - but you were also expected to work into the evening.

But then tech firms got fatter, more bureaucratic, and less hard-working, but the amenities stayed.

309 Twitter still has problematic people doing censoring, and a rumor was going around yesterday that Elon made some kind of conciliatory deal with leftists so there's still work to do.

He made that deal under pressure from ADL (which people still seem to think has anything to do with protecting Jews, when it's really protecting the Democrat Party) and then ADL and others pressured advertisers to drop Twitter. So now Musk is pissed. Shades of the theory that Trump would've been a middle-of-the-roader if they hadn't pushed him into a corner for defeating their bollard queen.

323 Most heartless layoffs I have ever seen; back in the 80's there were massive layoffs in the Energy Biz. One friend of mine had always been a huge suck-up to management, he thought that would grease his way to the top. When the layoffs came, an Exec he'd been sucking up to called him and said "Okay we've got 27 layoffs to process today, would you head over to this regional office and do the paperwork on all of them? " So he was happy to get the call and ran over their to do it - he worked for 12 hours firing people, doing their paperwork but at the end of the day he called his contact and said "There's a mistake here, I only did 26 layoffs today." And his boss said "no mistake; you're number 27, do your own paperwork on the way out."

324 I mean, this sucks for them I guess, but whatever.

I've been at two companies that were bought by larger companies, and one company that went through a merger. In all of those cases there were layoffs, usually several rounds of layoffs as things got sorted out. Two of those I made it through a few rounds of layoffs then jumped ship before it was my turn; the other time I actually did get laid off (but already had my resume up to date and a few leads for a new job).

Shit happens. That's life. Deal with it.

Pluralism was always a faulty idea, especially for a purported republic. Bob Dahl, prominent political philosopher, figured out that one in the 50's with studying New Haven in Who Governs? Essentially, he came up with the phrase deformed polyarchy instead of democracy, etc. to describe that local government. That is, some societal decisions are foreclosed upon because elites simply will not permit them to be discussed nor voted upon.

Expecting everyone to have equal pull in making policy is simply not possible because a lot of those decisions depend on knowledge that is simply not accessible to the masses. So as society got more complicated, the general population's ability to participate became more like a referendum on whatever the managerial class devised. But, vetoes will only get you so far as the managerial class simply kept repackaging their tripe in different packages until the plebes bought it.

409 Hilarious thread of twit whining. Hey - people get laid off. Life sucks sometimes. IBM laid me off in 2001 after 13 years of being a 1 or 2 rated employees, multiple national awards, etc. I was initiating a project with Disney at the time.
Posted by: Alexander Scipio

This. Got laid off when the CEO I was working for got fired, they decided to consolidate functions that the CEO had split apart. HR called me in, said it wasn't my fault and gave me an incredible recommendation. It still sucked, but I found a new job in a couple of weeks. Some of the high tech places are constantly laying off and hiring. They aim for at least 10% turn over every year to weed out low performers, or just people they don't like. Hiring will probably slow a bit with the economy going into the shitter, but they'll still be recruiting.

this is just cut-throatedly brutal.

I knew I was going to get the hook at a place I worked, so I had already started interviewing. Anyway the day came when the closeted lesbian boss called me in to her office with her henchwoman. There was a woman I didn't recognize there. She was HR flunky, of course.
So I sat down and this flunky began to read a list of charges against me and I felt like I was defendant on trial. Then she gives me the paper with all the itemized complaints and tells me to sign.

I declined, telling her it was all a lie and I don't endorse lying. And the henchwoman quickly looked at lesbian boss like, NOW WHAT?? and I sat there quietly, thinking "they're going to have to call the police to get me out of here". And finally the flunky pipes up with: Well, we can't make you sign.

also they timed it so the firing happened just a few days before Christmas

442 Paul Pelosi walked away from police before hammer attack https://tinyurl.com/2s3nrza5

NBC offers new details this morning on the police response before the attack - and Paul Pelosi's curious reaction to it, at least at first. According to their sources, Pelosi himself opened the door when police arrived, and rather than walk out, began to walk back toward assailant David DePape. DePape even assured police that everything was "good," which - given the broken window - police clearly didn't believe.

More oddities emerge, too. The new details don't include whether Pelosi had been attacked prior to the officer's arrival on scene; Miguel Almaguer notes that explicitly, in fact. If Pelosi was injured prior to their arrival, though, why would police have allowed him to go back into a residence with evidence of burglary apparent? In fact, one has to wonder why they would have let Pelosi do that even without apparent injuries, given the scene at that moment.

It’s a really high bar to claim that, including claiming it’s financially not feasible. The best path is pay in lieu of notice in the form of severance and some sort of outplacement assistance.

The era of cheap money is gone and even startups nowadays are going to find it harder to access capital to blow on worker bennies. Google and even Amazon are mature companies and their P/E reflects that. Increasingly antitrust issues are going to reduce ability of the bigs to buy startups running a big losses to lockup new products.

Mature industries run for a profit, not for the workers. If I was looking forward, biotech and space are the more likely sources for exponential stock growth.

So, if the layoffs are not due to lack of work or lack of funds, it would seem this part of the WARN act wouldn't apply.

Also, CA will allow lawyers to go on a fishing expedition in a company, trying to find a way to sue the company for whatever reason they can come up with.

573 Yeah, California labor laws are as bad as California taxes.

I had a friend who worked as a contractor for a big California tech firm. He was perfectly happy as a contractor, but got fired after six years, because some California judge had ruled that after six years contractors become full-time employees, and that the company was liable for Social Security and all other employment taxes - back to the first day of employment as a contractor.

So, all contractors got fired after six years.

He doesn't live in California anymore.

There's an old SF story called "The Hated" where the space astronauts on a Mars mission were prevented from killing each other on the flight but had to be separated into districts of the country to prevent them killing each other.

The framing of the story is an astronaut crossing the line and killing one of his crewmates (I think he had an irritating cough) then he wakes up and the shrinks have been letting him "decompress" though other drugs and are enthused about letting them mix....even though it is clear by the story that it wasn't working at all.

656 Yeah, these folks are going to get severance pay. It's standard: you announce on layoff day who's in and who's out. Those that are being laid off get escorted out (or in this case not allowed in) and locked out of important systems for security reasons. They get a severance, and in some cases are allowed into internal HR sites and chat systems so that they can use job-seeking resources and communicate with remaining employees to hand stuff over. The latter is at their discretion, if they're feeling nice and want to help their former fellow employees.

YT isn't quite so bad in my experience unless a channel becomes marked for death. You can usually keep things you watch regularly alive by hunting it up if it starts getting thin, and the new stuff doesn't seem to be massively slanted. I just had a 4 year old wargame review of SPI's Invasion America pop up (its from the 1970s) out of pretty much nowhere. I do own the game but hadn't thought of it in decades.

673 Been a metric shit ton of Texans moving up here these last few years.

First few snowfalls are fucking hysterical as they slide off roads and high center themselves on plow lines and drifts.

When we lived in CO for a few years (moved from and back to TX, FWIW) I noticed that the huge majority of vehicles in the ditch during a snowfall were 4x4s. Because those were the people who think "I got this, no problem" and don't slow the f*ck down. When our neighborhood had a heavy snow and was the last to get plowed, I and neighbors dug a half-dozen vehicles out of the street, every one a big-ass 4x4 SUV.
