The Weekend Hobby Thread

IMG_0870.PNG

***

One of my hobbies is hosting Sunday-Wednesday, The Overnight Open Thread. I normally lead with a photo. One of those photos was an inspiration to Duane who painted this and submitted to the almost world famous Weekend Hobby Thread.

IMG_0913.jpg

I know it's an oil painting. Size? I'm not sure. Wonderful job Duane.

I wish Aelishdad would have provided additional information about his photography and the trouble he is experiencing. Take a look at his photo below and his story. If there is anyone out there who can help out with this please feel free to comment or send me an email and I can pass along.

aging photo.jpg

I use to be an avid photog. Not so much now. This was taken, July 1971 at or near the grand Canyon. You can see how it aged poorly, PaintShopPro has buttons that let you fix it. Only a few hundred left to do.

My nic is Aelishdad.

A few hundred? Beat's thousands. Hopefully you will be successful at this project.

I had the pleasure to meet "f'd" at the TXMoMe last week. Besides great taste in Zappa music. He is quite the hobbyist. He submitted the following to us.

It's like a Hobby Feel Good Story of The Week.

Teen Car Photographer with Autism is Gifted RV by Retired Cameraman

A kindhearted photographer has gifted his recreational vehicle (RV) to a 14-year-old car photographer who has autism.

Retired lensman Scott Christenson gave his 1976 GMC motor home to Anthony Schmidt who takes incredible photos of model cars so that they look life-sized.

7 I have painted and inked the last unit for my WWII US Marine 28mm Bolt Action Army today. It is the 37mm anti-tank gun and it is drying as we speak. I will flock the base tomorrow and that will be it, everything is pretty much done now.

Pretty sure I will add odds and ends along with some extra infantry figures to the army but the main force is complete and playable.

8 https://tinyurl.com/mvxtnazwhat I have been working on last few weeks, vehicles to clutter up my war game troops
All are Prussian 1813 vehicles, front is supposed wagon loaded with sacks of flour I guess for the bakery. I had to make the oxen yoke. Middle is a forge wagon, I think the front is where charcoal would be fired up for the blacksmithing, last is another wagon, have crates but just primed them.
And the 2 men are blacksmithing, 1 with anvil I made a horse shoe, the other wasn't sure what but he is checking the fire for cooking

Part of the fun is looking around the house for things to sketch. They might be greeting or holiday cards, figurines we've acquired over the years, photos of past pets, an old woven Easter basket, an interesting chunk of driftwood we picked up somewhere.

Last year I bought my very first granddaughter a set of HO trains for her birthday. She was three years old but trains are pretty much timeless starting about that age. This year my son and his wife get to provide 'quality time' with her when she receives an intricate set of DIY mountains, trees, and scenery for her HO platform with not just 'some assembly involved' but a whole lot of mixing, plastering, tunneling, assembly and painting involved. It's gonna take them forever.

Hopefully the parental units will rise to the occasion and I'll post a picture of their new hobby. Sometime around August when they're halfway finished.

When Covid first kicked in I bought a digitizer. What I found interesting is that I always paid for Kodak processing over a 50 year period. I shot both negatives and slides. The slides are perfect, while the negatives have a very perceptible yellow shift which can be pretty much 'fixed' in Photoshop. The negs and slides I processed myself over decades are perfect.

I have had persistent coughs after a fever since the early 90s, long after the original cause is gone. I use cinnamon hard candy as a cough suppressant and it lasts longer than the candy does. You can get Brachs at Amazon or store brand occasionally at groceries.

Discovered the cure when I had it on a vacation and after using up cough syrup without effect just ate the hard candy I had bought in a store on a lark.

Having accepted Jim SND's challenge to come up with a classical music greatest hits playlist. He said about 50 pieces, I thought it might be 100 but having scoured my brain (such as it is) for every piece I might have heard on a commercial, program, movie, cartoon or known through sheer ubiquity, it will be closer to 200.

I've started trying that method and it helps. I came across a video lesson that is similar: roughly block out the major areas to establish perspective and shading values. Then smooth things and add details based on the blocking.

This is all so new to me. (Should have started 50 or 60 years ago.) The combination of seeing, and appreciating, what is in front of me and learning to translate that to paper is enthralling. I'm at the point where if the sketch is recognizable as related to the subject, it's a win.

84 Here's a new bodging request.

I've got a lifetime of 35mm experience, including three years of Occupational Photography in my H.S. days. Can run a Minox to a full-on View Camera, with rise, falls, tilt, swing, etc. Knowledge of photography is *not* lacking. Knowledge of Digital Post Processing though, is completely lacking. I won't $hell out for P-shop, but I understand that Lightroom does a credible job?

What I need is a mentor. Someone who can deduce the skills I'll most likely need, and avoid wasting time on chapters from which I'd likely not benefit. (I won't need much psychedelic effects, for example.) Just lighting, shading, color correction and other Photo 101 stuff. But in the computer, not under the enlarger.

I'm shooting a Nikon Df, and recording images in RAW/JPEG format. Huge files, but all the data is there to work with.

Any input is welcomed!

91 If there is anyone out there who can help out with this please feel free to comment or send me an email and I can pass along.

This is re: "deaging" photos.

If the workflow has settings/values that work for all, or even many/most photos, it might be worth a months subscription to Photoshop and write a script (not that hard, at least when I did it quite a few versions ago) to batch process.

So, you apply some settings and bam, all the photos are (hopefully) fixed. Then, you review and put the ones not quite right (original, not the near-miss corrected) in a folder and play with the settings on one of them.

Keep doing this until either you get to under 2 or so, or (worst case) whenever you do the batch, only the one you used for figuring out the settings is fixed.

My guess is most of your time early on will be spent reviewing/grading after processing a batch and later it will be tweaking (not the meth kind!). Maybe, once you get to a couple dozen that still need fixed, just hand tune each of those.

Sven, go look up the Nikon Df. The top and front controls are about 90% perfect replicas of a 1980s Nikon FE or FM. It even looks like one. All of the digital magic is on the back of the camera. So, all of my muscle memory from F2a & FE bodies clicks right in, and I can run the camera.

Running the camera is not the problem though. Post processing in a computer, that'll be an entirely new world to me.

102 One thing I learned recently when sketching is not to make things too small. This should have been obvious but I started just using small sketchbooks so as not to 'waste' paper. (Yes, I can be stupidly frugal.) I resurrected some newsprint pads, about 17 x 24 inches and 50 lb. weight, I had forgotten about. It's suitable for dry materials and has enough texture for pastels, Conte crayons, charcoal, and colored pencils. And the stuff is inexpensive. Instead of trying to put loads of detail in a tiny space, which is beyond me, I'll use as much space as I want. If I'm trying to draw an eye and it takes up a square foot, that's fine. Using a slanted surface and looser arm motions makes a bigger difference than expected.

So much to learn. Fine detail can come along later.

This I did not know! Thanks! I really miss the olde dayes of the Nikon School. Eighteen wheel rigs with trailers fitted out as photo classrooms, with a lot of neat Nikon toys to play with, and some of the best photo instructors to be found.

You brought your own rig, but could use whatever lenses or accessories they had, and you got taught to USE that gear to great effect. Damn few have the coin to have bought a Nikkor 8mm fisheye, but it was sure fun to bang out a few frames with theirs mounted on my F2a. And, etc.

I miss the film & darkroom days, but must adapt.

I had an idea for a painting and found a painting in a YouTube music video with *exactly* the overall color and mood I wanted - an early morning seascape. Using the color picker in Gimp (I'm sure Photoshop has the same feature) I saw the color breakdown and mixed my color percentages from that. I started with that color mix and everything fell into place from there.

Computer/image software really makes painting easier. I can overlay an idea onto an image of what I've already painted and *see* beforehand if it helps or distracts. *See* if it needs to be larger or smaller. Bring up the values or subtract from them until they *work*.
