TIME reviewed a draft of the open letter circulating among Twitter employees on Monday. "Elon Musk's plan to lay off 75% of Twitter workers will hurt Twitter's ability to serve the public conversation," said the draft of the letter, which has not yet been published. "A threat of this magnitude is reckless, undermines our users' and customers' trust in our platform, and is a transparent act of worker intimidation."
The letter demands that Musk commits to preserving Twitter's current headcount if his takeover of the company goes through. It also demands he does not discriminate against employees based on their political beliefs and that he commits to "fair" severance policies and more communication about working conditions. "We demand to be treated with dignity, and to not be treated as mere pawns in a game played by billionaires," the list of demands says.

Staff, Elon Musk, and Board of Directors: We, the undersigned Twitter workers, believe the public conversation is in jeopardy.
"The public conversation," as curated and censored by us.
Elon Musk's plan to lay off 75% of Twitter workers will hurt Twitter's ability to serve the public conversation. A threat of this magnitude is reckless, undermines our users' and customers' trust in our platform, and is a transparent act of worker intimidation.It will reduce the number of Bluehairs available for censorship duty, which is the intent, because Musk believes that "the public conversation" is best served by the greatest tolerance for and latitude of free expression practicable.

We cannot do our work in an environment of constant harassment and threats. Without our work, there is no Twitter.

He agreed to go forward with the sale, but that could just be due to lawyers advising him he was unlikely to escape liability in the courts. Is it possible that he provoked the national security investigation to get the government to kill the Twitter deal that he wanted killed, but was unable to walk away from without outside help?

I've seen this before, when another millionaire got into publishing. Wendy McCaw bought the Santa Barbara News Press awhile back, and a couple of years later she was accused of changing the editorial outlook of the SB Pravda wannabe. Things got ugly, and the formerly non-union staff quickly began to unionize, specifically to avoid being fired (they were quite open about it).

Look, I know there's a real "office work isn't real work" bias here, but I'm going to answer the question seriously anyway.
Silicon Valley specifically and computer jobs generally can be a grind. You're expected to be mentally sharp and on board for hours at a time, working on complicated problems, and dealing with frequent interruptions and frustrations. Imagine trying to put together a watch in your mind as you get pinged by your co-workers to remind them how something you built two years ago works.
I work on a codebase that's hundreds of thousands of lines of code, built across a couple of decades using at least three dozen different technologies, and it's all constantly in flux. Sure, I'm not digging ditches, but it's taxing in a different way.
Also, if you have a bad manager who is intent on self promotion, blame shifting, doesn't give clear instruction, maliciously withholds information, plays favorites etc, that's rough.

Firing indicates that you are being removed from your position for cause having in some way not been able to do your job properly and that presumably someone who can properly fill the position you were is will be hired in your place.
RIF is another way of saying. "I don't think we have a good business purpose for all of these folks, time to let some of them go."
Striking without a union during a RIF for reorg following change of ownership is a really really bad plan. Please don't take it the wrong way. Office jobs have their challenges but when I hear "working conditions" I take it literally. I'd be more concerned with the guys digging ditches or driving forklifts and doing the things that are dangerous. Sorry, but in that regard the white collar office guys are of least concern.

Also, you joke about the temperature, but at Microsoft, a LOT of the offices were hot as hell. They were designed for single occupancy, but they often stuffed two people in that space. Add in a half dozen computers for each occupant. Add in a HVAC system that was designed to cool whole floors, not individual offices, and the result was you could feel a wash of heat pouring out of many offices simply walking by in the hallway.

I saw this in real-life with Jeff Bezos.
I built a broadcast facility for Amazon a couple of years ago, specifically for events related to Prime-Day.
It was intended to be a sort of fancier, upscale sort of QVC and was spearheaded by a small contingent within Amazon with little input from Bezos.
They hired editors, producers, camera operators, control room operators, the works.
Bezos came for a tour, saw the place was informed what the intended use was, he got up from the table, said we're not doing this and walked out.
I will say this, all of the employees got good severance packages on their way out the door.

My office had adjustable thermostats, but it would just set the range at -1 to +1 degree from the default setting. Heat was fine, but AC was miserly.
I would go to the gas station and get those chemical hand warmers, start 'em up, and tape them to the wall about 18" below the thermostats in my area to trick them into thinking the room was too warm but not trigger a fault. Took me about a week to dial it in.

It was probably well over a year ago that I saw some news bit that their HQ was almost entirely empty because of Covid, yet they went ahead and did a multi-million dollar renovation inside. The place is still mostly empty, as they're too afraid to make their employees actually show up for work. In spite of free shuttles, and free food/entertainment once they're there.

Apparently you're not familiar with the federal government's RIF system & union involvement. Performance Awards - bullshit and all - are a guiding factor as now is diversity, etc. Much of it is done to get around "veterans preference" - keeping deserving "5 & 10 point" veterans onboard in government positions for which they were qualified - over some slacker with 20 years of service.
It can also be useful for getting around ADA employees & dealing with the last of the lower graded clerical, support and/or maintenance type employees.

Depends. There is usually a grace period with H1Bs. if they lose employment, they have some amount of time (three months, I think, but I don't remember) to find employment with someone else who will take over the requirement. This compresses wages quickly during large-scale layoffs. The worker will take a lot less to stay in the country, and the employers know it.

I've worked in places where we didn't have that in an office environment, and it would get up to 90 degrees inside. That was no joke.
They mean nothing of that, more like free ping pong tables and meditation spaces. Its just there to fill in the boilerplate 19th century labor conditions stereotype and let people imagine babies getting eaten by looms at Twitter or data mine collapses that trap thousands.
Its stolen valor like everything they do.
