Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Two-in-One Songs Cafe![]() Moody Blues. The intro is poem over music with rising tempo. The next one is Pink Floyd. Even though a lot of Pink Floyd songs lead into each other, I don't think they're "intros" to each other, exactly, as opposed to different movements of the same song (the Shine On You Crazy Diamond parts) or just songs that, well, fade into each other. The song here is definitely in the "intro" category. Pink Floyd. For a hint, I'd say, "Peak Pink Floyd." (Clarification: Let's say Pink Floyd had two peaks, and this from their second peak.) Boston. Hint: I don't know if you need one. Early Boston. I mean, come on. Steve Miller Band. I think this starts side 2 of the greatest hits album. Elton John. So much synthesizer. (Link replaced.) Alan Parsons Project. As a hint: The intro is cool and what you'd call the "main song" of the pair is pretty lame. I'm pretty sure the intro is used as hype music for introducing sports teams in arenas. The main song is largely forgotten and lost in the early 80s (deservedly). Hall & Oates, just after their actual peak. This one's kind of played out, but: The Beatles. Not the Abbey Road Medley, which is a medley and a different sort of thing. This one is so obvious you'll probably miss it. The way people overlook things in plain sight. Here's a hint: Weirdly, almost no one listens to this album anymore. Any songs you'd like to nominate? I only included songs which are officially two different songs, with one being the intro to the other, but there are a lot of songs that begin with unrelated intros which could be "their own songs," if the artists had felt like slapping a title on them. "Stay with Me" by the Faces has a long intro that isn't much like the song that follows. One website I looked at defined an "intro" as being an introductory piece of music (obviously) which is not just the main riff or part of the chorus or part of the verse. So, Paperback Writer doesn't have an "intro" -- it just starts with a short version of the chorus. Day Tripper doesn't have an "intro" -- it just plays the main guitar riff. Revolution, on the other hand, does start with a very short "intro," because the opening guitar riff is nowhere to be found in the rest of the song. (Although that's so short maybe it's just a guitar fanfare.) Point is, songs don't have to officially be titled as two different songs to have an intro which is, basically, a much different musical idea. Update: Here's a song that is just nothing but intro, until it goes into the outro.

Popular songs used to have introductions called "verses" (tho' that appellation is a bit confusing).
These were typically sung out of tempo, with perhaps the scarcest accompaniment by a piano. You can read them in old sheet music. They set the tone for the song to follow and were only played one time. Here is Sinatra singing "I've Got a Crush on You" with the verse. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtH02InlKP4 Posted by: gourmand du jour back in the fog at November 04, 2022 07:47 PM (jTmQV) 15

Armed robbery victim struck by suspect’s vehicle in West Hollywood youtube.com/watch?v=oSZsAeH_Q4c
A man was robbed at gunpoint in a West Hollywood parking lot Friday morning and then struck by the suspect's vehicle in an incident that was captured on video. Surveillance video shows a man stepping out of a white Tesla when a sedan, described as gray, four-door Infiniti, stops behind him. The driver of the sedan gets out of the vehicle, charges at the man with what appears to be a gun and pulls the victim to the ground. The victim gets up and runs away with the suspect behind him. The video shows a second person getting out of the Infiniti and also running toward the victim. Video from the front of the lot shows the victim being struck by the sedan, sending the pedestrian over the windshield and then onto the ground. " A lot of the songs I like are songs that have another song as an intro. This makes them hard to play digitally. Because they really should be played together, but no shuffle program has a "link these two songs as a unit" feature.
So to hear them properly in a digital medium, you have to go to the album itself." Ace, there is a way to combine two adjoining tracks on an album into one, but only when you rip them to the computer from a cd using itunes! I have done this with many two-in-one songs myself! "Insert the CD. Select the two songs. Go to iTunes menu Advanced > join tracks then rip then import the songs." https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2810417 Posted by: Mr. Right at November 04, 2022 08:06 PM (Rewwz) 77

One of the best tunes on the album is "Hearbreaker," which has a great intro that merges with the melody nicely. Meat Loaf's song ("Keeper Keep Us") seems like it inspired some of the 40k stuff. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at November 04, 2022 08:15 PM (llXky) 115

For intros that could be a separate song, Nancy Wilson's acoustic guitar intro to "Crazy On You" by Heart would qualify.
Nancy tells a story about meeting Van Halen back in the 70s, and having Eddie and Alex try to mack on her and her sister Ann, with the goal of getting both sets of brothers and sisters in one bed. The VH brothers didn't succeed, but at one point Eddie confessed to Nancy that he didn't own an acoustic guitar. She was so shocked that she gifted him one of her Ovations, and she says he broke out in tears saying it was the nicest thing anybody had ever done for him. Regarding songs mashed up together--Who Are You by the Who has about three different takes on the same melody in the same song. The main motif, the Sufi chant motif, and the acoustic breakdown solo in the middle. Excellent job at transitions in that particular song.
Behind Blue Eyes is another where Pete inserts rage stroking playing and lyrics in the middle of it before returning to its acoustic kvetching. Posted by: whig at November 04, 2022 08:36 PM (CXr4y) Posted by: rhennigantx at November 04, 2022 08:36 PM (BRHaw) 210

i think you can cheat on an LP and make it longer playing by making the grooves thinner or something (with a loss in quality) but that doesn't have anything to do with the 2-different-grooves thing, though they might have used that technique to make what would be two 11 minute grooves (quite short) a bit longer.

>>A local regional band "Elayne and the Biscaynes" in the midwest had a version of the Who's song "Can't Explain" that could be up to 10-20 minutes long depending on how many dancers would drop dead trying to keep going.
I play the piano for gatherings and I have a cocktail version of Layla in my repertoire, I'll tell you, the CODA section kills, it kills Jerry. And sometimes I will STRREEETCH it out. Posted by: Thomas Bender ----------------------- Keef's assault drumming is what elevates that song. One of the few well recorded drums before Glyn Johns and Who's Next. Shel Talmy was not a great guy as he brought in Jimmy Page as a session guitarist for that song but he knew how to record the Who. Kit Lambert's talents did not go into proper recording and Pete was too inexperienced to do it. So Keef's drumming sounds like biscuit tins on a lot of post Cant Explain records including Tommy. interesting fact: Because 78s didn't hold much information per disc, an "album" of 78s would be a boxed "booklet" of five or six discs comprising the full album. That's why it was called an "album," because it actually resembled a photo album. the 33 1/3 LP format could hold 45 minutes+ on one disc so there were no more "book album" albums, but the name "album" stuck, with a lot of people (like me) not knowing why it was called an album. Some Quadrophenia CD packages recently released have Pete's demos on them at the end of the album. It is rather interesting to see how much of Pete's demos ended up in the final product and since he played all the instruments, how his versions differed from the Who versions.

Not exactly the same thing, but in the vein of songs that should be linked together, They Might Be Giants have, on their Apollo 18 album, a slew of songs which are very short, some no more than 5-10 seconds. They're each their own track on the CD. It's peculiar enough when you listen to them in order - they sound like song ideas that never developed, but they kind of work together. "Well, I'm a standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona And such a fine sight to see It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford Slowin' down to take a look at me" Posted by: Biergood at November 04, 2022 08:47 PM (FQWHA) Jackson Browne, Glenn Frey collaboration... Listen to Jackson Browne's version...a completely different approach to the song. And just to beat a dead horse deader: The Eagles original version with Randy Meissner's vocals, and Bernie Leadon's banjo are the secret sauce that make it work. Later versions a pale imitations. Posted by: browndog Official Mascot of Team Gizzard You're probably going to think this is horrible, but what got me tuned into the Eagles not sucking was I heard the Travis Tritt version of Take It Easy, and I thought, "Wow, maybe the Eagles don't suck." 354 Deep End is a great disc. My brother is a HUGE who fan so he has pretty much everything ever done by every member of the band. Its all pretty good, even the lesser works.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor ---------------- I think the recorded concert at Deep End on DVD is actually a bit longer than the album with a few more songs but I haven't seen it in years. Deep End was about the end of Pete's interest in doing regular albums. He drifted more to revisiting doing multi media projects and revisiting old Who recordings in varying formats. I think his brush with the law also put him off the touring for awhile. Posted by: whig at November 04, 2022 09:14 PM (CXr4y) 367
I like Eye in the Sky quite a bit as well. There's not much Alan Parsons Project I dislike, though. The entire album Eve is disappointing and anything after Stereotomy is kind of downhill, sadly.

I really want this to be true:
New Report Claims Hollywood Focus Groups Overwhelmingly Prefer A Fake ‘Problematic’ TV Show To Real ‘Woke’ Production As detailed by WDW Pro’s source, Show A, which is currently in production, follows the story of “a young POC policewoman who gets dumped by her girlfriend and transfers to a new precinct in a Southern town where she is shocked by the racism, sexism and abuse of power of her new colleagues as well as their poor relations with the communities they serve.” On the opposite end of the spectrum, Show B presented viewers with “Two young detectives (two white guys, one Ivy League and the other a good o’l boy) who are partnered in Vegas where they cultivate informants and recurring girlfriends.” Unfortunately for the studio, according to the insider, Show B “tested better with all groups, no matter age, sex or race.” Posted by: weft cut-loop at November 04, 2022 09:18 PM (IyrhE) 375

Posted by: Bram Stoker's Chocula ---------------------------- Helluva earwig song and production. Great lyrics that have triple meaning--gambling cheat (re concept), cheating partner, or big brother spying. Parsons knew his production techniques and he and his partner could write. Turn of a Friendly Card was a well thought out and produced concept album. I watch a lot of YT documentaries and Alan Parsons has one where he is interviewed at his gorgeous house. The interviewer and he also discuss some of the songs on that album while Parsons is behind the mixing board with the original tapes of the session demonstrating how and why certain song elements were there. Another interview with him discusses engineering on Dark Side of the Moon. Posted by: whig at November 04, 2022 09:20 PM (CXr4y) 377

Posted by: weft cut-loop at November 04, 2022 09:18 PM (IyrhE) Well look at the basics, ignoring wokism. Show B has 2 main characters with differing personalities so has the chance for banter/jokes and for different folks to identify with one or the other. It has 2 girls so thats relationships and friendships so more dialogue and friendships And overall the show only mentions informants and seems to have a light tone ------------------- Show A has one character who is alone. She has no friends in her new job. And the tone is dark dark because everyone except possibly her is bad. Even if the writing was equivalent (which for woke shows is virtually a sure thing NOT to be so) which show would likely be better and more relaxing? That Journey album with Wheel In The Sky, Feeling That Way etc was their highpoint. How many bands have a good lead singer and then another one who is better? Plus they weren't quite so Perry-Popped as they became later. I get it, Perry made them millions so it was probably the right financial move to let him run things, but they were never the same after that album.

BOC's "Subhuman" from "Secret Treaties" is kind of a tepid, jazz-rock thing, but the live version from "On Your Feet Or On Your Knees" displays the band's true power and the live outro has fantastic keyboard and guitar solos. At 7:30, it's 3 minutes longer than the studio version and I used it for doing the 2 mile run in ROTC -- at the 5 minute mark of my run, I would turn it on and the outro would propel me to a good score.

Bands back then weren't as concerned about being pigeonholed. They drew inspiration and played music from a lot of genres. The New Riders of the Purple Sage were a country rock band and a number of the Dead played with them. Jerry also did a lot of blue grass and blues stuff on the side that influenced the Dead. That was a fun time for music. Posted by: JackStraw at November 04, 2022 09:56 PM (ZLI7S) "Operator" by the Dead, with Pigpen on vocals is a straight-up country song. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at November 04, 2022 09:59 PM (adcTg) 464

Old Priest was not always mixed well. But, damn, some great music. Judas Priest was not always leatherboys getting yucky (Livin' After Midnight much?).
the live recordings of Genocide, Victim of Changes, and Sinner (on Unleashed in the East) are fucking amazing. Posted by: Pug Mahon, Gen X Ne'er-Do-Well at November 04, 2022 10:00 PM (UQUAY) Posted by: SMH at what's coming at November 04, 2022 10:00 PM (GIWof) 467

Yep. And Pigpen was basically a blues harp player. Posted by: JackStraw at November 04, 2022 10:00 PM (ZLI7S) Posted by: CheapTalk's Wife at November 04, 2022 10:00 PM (XQnJx) Posted by: Thomas Bender at November 04, 2022 10:01 PM (up/3i) Posted by: Zettai at November 04, 2022 10:02 PM (gI57S) 471
When I was a kid/teenager I would hear numerous Eagles tunes on the radio and had no clue that it was the same band. just a bunch of pop music I had to listen to when in the car.
In hindsight, Don Felder and Joe Walsh were the best of the bunch. Posted by: Pug Mahon When I was taking my driver's education drives in high school in the 70s, "Gonna be a heartache tonight" was playing all over the radio. I fucking HATED that song. Still do. I didn't know they were the Eagles back then. I just HATED that fucking song. Posted by: Biergood at November 04, 2022 10:02 PM (FQWHA) 472

Bands back then weren't as concerned about being pigeonholed. They drew inspiration and played music from a lot of genres.

86 >>>Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher" has an opening drum solo that is arguably a great intro.
No idea what the song is going to be. We used to play that on repeat in the garage while working on our cars -- it sounds like a big block with long tube headers. Posted by: red speck at November 04, 2022 10:12 PM (gS3OW) 481

The Beatles "A Day In The Life" isn't one song following another. It started out as two songs and merged together. Paul sings his song and John sings his in alternating verses.
Posted by: Napoleon XIV at November 04, 2022 09:29 PM (AiZBA) I always liked that song more than most of the hit Beatles songs. Not saying its better, but the others you sort of had to like. Posted by: Oldcat at November 04, 2022 10:52 PM (NkGvj) 483

Bob Seeger's "Travelling Man" and "Beautiful Loser" are a great set of "paired songs" on his Live Bullitt album. Not so much on the original studio version, but the live version weaves them together so well that they become forever paired.
Out here in the sticks, the radio stations pretty much exclusively played the live versions so I only just recently realized they were separate songs. One of the old-school DJ's had a good line about Boston back in the day: "You can't go a Long Time without Foreplay". Posted by: Russ from Winterset at November 05, 2022 12:09 PM (cZk6p) 486
