That's a good point. There's long been a question as to whether the assault on Okinawa, and the horrific casualties there, was truly necessary or wise. A blockade of all shipping of any kind, even fishing boats, would have taken longer but eventually would have reduced everyone on that island, including the military forces, back to a stone age level of existence - especially if all food storage was repeatedy bombed.

Most of Ukraine doesn't have a large river at the Russia's back(the Russian position looks overextended there from the get go, planting themselves just over a major river and not pushing much further), meaning they'd normally need to penetrate with tanks (which they don't have in sufficient quantity) and do an encirclement conventionally. Given how long things are taking in Kherson, it doesn't look like they're ultimately going to deal a major blow, though recapturing territory is good for morale.

The apparent reduction campaign of Kherson is more like a siege of a salient than a campaign of motion. Both the Ukes and Russians are seriously short of skilled infantry so artillery and rocket battles along with supply interdiction is what is going on. Also, weather patterns are not uniform in Ukraine and the southern steppes particularly Kherson in light of its closeness to the Black Sea.

Well, one thing left out in the west is that the offensive in the Donbas by the Russians has continued without pause and a major fortified town there is likely to fall soon. The operations in the Kharkov region and Kherson region have had no impact on that. That is where the artillery has been pounding positions to be swept up by small infantry forces with few losses all summer, more or less since the Azov HW city was taken the same way.

Trading evacuated villages on the flanks has little military value on the long term result.

Yes, I know a lot of these news readers are not thoughtful people of depth, but it seems to me you need to at least look good and sound good to do that job well. She also appears to be smart and quick on her feet in answering fellow journalists.

Most in that field have already been captured. Ms Lake looks to be a notable exception to that. She does seem to have the right attitude about the media, which more Republicans should adopt. It only works every time its used since Reagan and before.
