You don't have to be in California government to create a disaster, but it helps

From March 11, 2017, Ace of Spades HQ, a ghost train:

F_high_speed_rail_.jpeg

High-speed train flies through downtown Fresno

Such a beautiful dream.

In 2017, the Powers that Were had built an amazing, glistening, grand new train/bus station in San Francisco for bullet trains that were years away from arriving. The grand opening was anticipated soon.

The 3 block long, 5 story station opened briefly for bus traffic a year late, when it cracked and they had to close and fortify it. More massive expenses and delays. And those bullet trains are never coming to the station. Unlike ballplayers to that famous ballfield who were attracted by its mere presence. Gavin Newsom had to destroy the planet, along with Jerry Brown's dream, on his way to Washington D.C.

Quoting myself back in 2017:

Wait - I thought the train was supposed to STOP in downtown Fresno. Well never mind. The California high-speed rail debacle just gets bigger and stupider over time. I have a hard time keeping track, even though I see some of the construction on the project from time to time. I have friends who have already had their lives changed by it.

Well, the project isn't currently getting much bigger, but it remains extraordinarily stupid. The trains are now planned to run from Bakersfield to Merced rather than from Los Angeles to San Francisco. In other words, they are just running it through the easy, flat farmland. But it costs more than the original train was supposed to cost. And it won't be a bullet train, really.

March, 2017:

In the middle of the day, I drove past the support towers under construction for the viaduct intended to carry high speed trains over Cedar Avenue and Highway 99 in the southern part of Fresno. There were some really, really tall cranes standing near the towers, but I saw no work underway.

Now, work had proceeded to the point where there is a structure over the highway, including some golden support arches that don't look really permanent. Don't know if they ARE permanent.

The New York Times has even noticed the project. It includes a report about the frustration of a French engineering firm. A French engineering firm. There used to be jokes about how the French couldn't do engineering because they still had to say quatre-vingt-dix instead of the old, logical word nonante (except among the uneducated) because the regimental numbers of the units that stayed loyal to the king during the revolution could not be mentioned.

But apparently, this train-building French outfit, SNCF, does some good work. Steven Hayward has picked out some "fun bits" from the long feature in the NYT. Here are a couple with some of his commentary:

Actually there really isn't much question: it isn't going to be finished. And in any case, since Californians will all be driving electric cars in little more than a decade (heh), why bother finishing it, since it will not do anything to save the climate.

The tortured effort to build the country's first high-speed rail system is a case study in how ambitious public works projects can become perilously encumbered by political compromise, unrealistic cost estimates, flawed engineering and a determination to persist on projects that have become, like the crippled financial institutions of 2008, too big to fail. . . [A]ccording to projections widely used by engineers and project managers, the train could not be completed in this century.

But this passage is the best part of the whole story:

The state was warned repeatedly that its plans were too complex. SNCF, the French national railroad, was among bullet train operators from Europe and Japan that came to California in the early 2000s with hopes of getting a contract to help develop the system.

The company's recommendations for a direct route out of Los Angeles and a focus on moving people between Los Angeles and San Francisco were cast aside, said Dan McNamara, a career project manager for SNCF.

The company pulled out in 2011. "There were so many things that went wrong," Mr. McNamara said. "SNCF was very angry. They told the state they were leaving for North Africa, which was less politically dysfunctional. They went to Morocco and helped them build a rail system."

Morocco's bullet train started service in 2018.

There you have it. As far as good governance is concerned, California now ranks below North Africa.

*

Ed Driscoll adds a bit of history from the NYT piece:

The modern concept of high speed rail began in 1964, when the Japanese National Railways launched its first Shinkansen train from Tokyo to Shin Osaka, operating at 130 mph. Following passage of the High Speed Ground Transportation Act of 1965 in the U.S., the Pennsylvania Railroad (and successor Penn Central), in partnership with the Federal Railroad Administration, upgraded its Washington-to-New York corridor for new 160-mph trains. Four- and six-car trainsets were comprised of electric multiple-unit cars built by Budd, named Metroliners.

So, that was in 1965. Why don't we have bullet trains crossing the country? Where is the train to Hawaii?

La estupidez continues in California government

Via J.J. Sefton's Morning Report yesterday:

California's Water Supply Falls Victim to CRT

California's agricultural production is as large as Texas and Iowa combined. The state's Mediterranean climate and fertile valleys help make it the fifth largest supplier of food and fiber in the world. It all depends on water.

Most of the state's crops rely on irrigation as opposed to rain. Irrigation is regulated by a system of water rights held by public and private parties. Notice these are "rights" and not "privileges." The exercise of these rights to bring about beneficial uses of water such as growing food is a complicated area of law and policy.

History proves that giving the government control over the food supply is usually a recipe for famine. Still, there are many environmental and so-called social justice organizations that would like to move all the privately held water rights to state control. One way to do so is by influencing state water rights agencies through Critical Race Theory.

California's State Water Resources Control Board, (AKA the State Board), has released a draft of its Racial Equity Action Plan and is soliciting public comments. The board is one of the more powerful of California's bureaucracies. Members are appointed by the governor and according to its website, "...the five-member State Water Board allocates water rights, adjudicates water right disputes, develops statewide water protection plans, establishes water quality standards, and guides the nine Regional Water Quality Control Boards."

According to Executive Director Eileen Sobeck, "There could not be a more critical challenge facing us at this time than the challenge of achieving racial equity," demonstrates the Board's priorities in this time of major drought.

This piece is quite detailed, so you may want to read the whole thing.

. . . . It gets serious when your family's food supply can be negatively impacted.

Remember freedom is worth fighting for and if you don't push back you're going to get what they give you and you won't like it. People and organizations are afraid to speak out against this obvious racist tactic of CRT for fear of being called "racist." So? Racists are calling you a racist. You don't have to be from California to speak up for food security and there are rumors someone from Sacramento wants to run for national office. Perhaps your voice can be an influence for sanity. Go to Racial Equity Action Plan and let them know your opinion.

Meanwhile, in Minnesota

Scott Johnson fills in some details on the oath above, first reported by Anthony Gockowski:

Anthony's story includes links to the underlying materials. Perhaps most notable are the mindlessness, falsity, and Maoist self-abasement of the oath, although I am undoubtedly missing a few other elements that should be mentioned. How serious people can recite the shibboleths with a straight face and without gagging is a phenomenon almost beyond belief.

We do wish them well in their mission to uproot "the structural violence deeply embedded in the healthcare system" and "the gender binary" in the course of their long careers in medicine. First, do no harm, baby!

Apparently, the students (read "student committee", I think) wrote the oath with "faculty advisors". Some advisors!

Now they are getting advice on how to fend off angry reactions. Heh.

*

Johnson again. Video at the link:

Over at the University of Minnesota Medical School, one probably shouldn't be seen with books such as Arthur Koestler's novel Darkness at Noon or Fan Shen's memoir Gang of One: Memoirs of a Red Guard. It might reflect an inclination to think for yourself and other such bourgeois indulgences.

I'm thinking that they missed a few strokes at this year's white-coat ceremony for new students. The video below is a little off on the party line, but it gives you the idea. The authorities at the medical school can look to flesh out the ceremony with a little help from the Maoist struggle sessions of old.

What Smoolio achieved was to expose the silliness of the media, for jumping on a hoax, and then watching that same media pretend like it never happened.

A lot of people who otherwise expected the media to be honest presenters of news, saw it for what it was.

The government lie is too big for people to actually see it. And so they never get held accountable.

39 Her sis the deal-e-o with high speed trains in Europe. All the ledtistbretards here think Europe has 1000 lines cross crossing the continent. Hop on a bullet train in Paris and 3 hours later you’re in Madrid.

Nah bruh. That’s not at all reality. Every country has 1 maybe 2 high speed lines between the capital and second biggest city. Paris to Lyon, Madrid to Barcelona, Rome to Milan and so on. And those are perfect distances for a high speed train. Faster than driving and a lot less hassle than flying for the same cost and time.

But if you’re going from Milan to Berlin there is no direct high speed line. It’s all old fashioned slow trains that take forever. So just like in America everyone flies between Milan and Berlin.

There are places in the US where high speed would do well. City pairs that are a 4-5 hour drive or 1 hr flight. Dallas-Houston is perfect for that. And it’s all flat so the speed could be maintained the entire distance. Florida coast works as well.

42 Texas is going through another of its periodic flirtations with a high speed rail going in a triangle between Dallas, Houston, and Austin with a little tail going to San Antonio and Corpus Christi.

This has been a plan since at least 1972. And so far, nada.

Mostly because the farmers don't want to sell and even if they do, they aren't fat cats, who by right should get that money and not horrible, dirty, deplorable farmers.

They're pretty serious this time, so if they can get all of the graft straightened out, it may happen.

Or not. It made sense in '72 cause the cities weren't heavily surrounded by suburbs. Even using all the old railroad track areas, you'd have to demolish a lot of housing and buildings to get something close to the cities.

I'm pretty sure we had high speed service here in the 1930's. The Hiawatha lines had to average a 100 mph just to keep its schedule. That meant humping a 120 mph consistently.

79 I wish trains worked, I wish they were viable and money makers. I love trains. I enjoy riding in a train, its a far better way to travel than nearly anything else available to us. Its comfortable, you can eat sitting down, people are friendly and share a sense of adventure, the rails go through some of the most incredibly beautiful and unseen wilderness in the world, etc.

But they aren't, viable that is. They work great for freight, but passenger trains are a net loss. Everywhere. No matter what kind of train or where they are. Acela and the Coastal Starlighter rails for Amtrak lose the least money, but still lose money. All passenger trains worldwide except short run tourist rail are propped up by public funds.

This is what it’s all about. There are 3 ways to get from A to B long distance. Drive, fly or train. Consumers make the decision on price, speed and convenience. There’s nothing magical about a train. Make it cheap, convenient and fast and people will use it. Make it slow and expensive and they won’t.

I think they're both right. Meanwhile... 127 I thought Waller did an admirable job of affirming his friendship with PDT while contrasting it with Biden and Warnock's shameful withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The average pol would have hemmed and hawed, and nattered on about agreeing with some things, and not others. Good for Walker. The press thought they'd trapped him by asking for a yes or no answer. They were a bit nonplussed when the first word out of his mouth was "yes".

All of these trains, all over the world, are run deeply in the red. Deeply.
The famous high-speed commuter trains in Japan cost over $14Billion a year loss to operate.

The only leg of any of these expensive trains that doesn't run at a loss is the Tokyo-Osaka leg.
That said, the Japanese commuter trains on the whole are an annual $14Billion suck on the country.

Do I need to mention that in Japan the pay men to shoehorn the riders into these trains? Yeah, still running at a YUGE loss.

Yeah, trains are notoriously late and bad for timing and at least the Coastal Starlighter swapped out the beautiful old huge luxuroius comfortable thrones they had for passenger seating and replaced them with tiny airline seating type of chairs. Not nearly as comfortable and easy to sit in for long hours. The cars are smaller too so you get less of a sense of comfort and luxury.

I get it: lighter and hence cheaper but just a huge step down from what they used to offer

We have a light rail link that goes out to the airport. It is far more convenient than asking someone to drop me off.

Plus, most employers out here heavily subsidize transportation passes. Mine is free. So I can take the light rail, train, bus, water taxi or ferry wherever I want, whenever I want.

Well, that's assuming you want to go from downtown to downtown. If you need further ground transportation at the destination, you have to choose between public transit (nasty), or taxis, or rent a car. All of which add to the expense of the trip. Or you can just hop in your car, spend a very few hours on the highway, listening to your own music, without the company of other smelly, crazy people, and drive direct to you destination address.

In Japan ticket prices are kept artificially low with government subsidies to keep people riding the trains and not buying cars and clogging the roads up anymore than they are now. Back when we were stationed in Japan we could go from Yokosuka to Tokyo for about $2.00. Not sure if it is still that cheap but that was a ridiculously low price.

Public transportation in Silicon Valley was superb. Trollies, CalTrain, bike paths everywhere, etc. In 2003 we moved to Seaside just outside of Monterey. I still was working in Menlo Park at that time and the 200 mile round trip commute was.... a grind even with my sporty BMW. I did make the very early (4:30AM) commute in about an hour and change a couple times, but it was taxing. I did take CalTrain frequently too, and it was OK. They had designated passenger cars with bike racks so I could take my bike and ride the mile or so to the office from the Menlo Park station.

I suspect the leftists running the state have ruined all that by now.

I read a campaign statement from Berkeley's representative to the East Bay Municipal District, which supplies drinking water to the East Bay. (He's running unopposed.)

What he is proudest of is that he helped block a proposal to raise the height of one of EBMUD's storage dams, which would have provided more water to deal with those frequent pesky droughts and stuff.

Raising the dam would have of course increased the size of the reservoir behind the dam, which would be Raping The Planet, and so was obviously unacceptable.

188 Amtrak pulls over to let freight trains by, the freight takes priority on the rails because the rails are owned by the freight companies. So you are traveling along and then get pulled on to a side rail and sit for like 15 minutes.

Its not so bad on a train because there's a snack bar and places to go play cards or fire up a laptop with the free internet, etc. The lounge cars are comfortable and friendly, nice to read on etc. But its a delay.

Martin Luther's theses nailed to the cathedral doors did not affect Rome or even his bishop. It did act as a starting point for debate, and gave positions that normal people (OK, and German princes) could aggregate around.
Luther did not fail because Leo X did not get his mail immediately.

Yeah, its not so much that they love trains (although I think they do), its that they want people's movements more easily controlled. A transgender Communist "housing activist" in California clearly explains the political goal behind making people live in apartments and making people take mass transit:

https://tinyurl.com/2ramwvbv

Opinion: Why Building Housing Near Mass Transit Promotes Collectivism

It will break us from the chains of capitalistic individualism and the destructive car-centric lifestyle.

---
Likewise, mass transit is in line with socialist values: people collectively getting to and from places – on trains, buses, or ferries run by our government. On transit owned by all of us.

Suburban housing tracts and sprawl, on the other hand, have their roots in capitalism and individualism — a man’s home is his castle and so on. It’s also car-centric with people traveling alone in their privately owned vehicles. Perpetuation of suburbia is diametrically opposed to the furtherance of collectivism.

LA to Vegas really SHOULD be one of those few rail lines that actually could make a profit. I15 is the only road to Vegas from LA, so it's always jammed with traffic, and when people go to Vegas, they really don't need their cars much since most folks just stay in the casinos. It's one of the few places where rail travel would be faster than driving. And besides, you can just rent a car in Vegas if you really need it, the rental will probably be less than the gas cost for doing the LA/Vegas drive.

But that won't happen. Because people want to drive their OWN car, without being beholden to the rail schedule, or the whims of the car rental company. Plus, leaving your car in a minimally patrolled lot in Apple Valley while you ride the train is just asking for vandalism or car theft, 60 miles away from home, because those high desert towns like AV, Barstow, Adelanto, Victorville etc are meth havens.

To justify the astronomical expense that was projected for this project? I lived in LA for about 10 years and never saw this pressing need to a high speed train. When I did drive to San Fran it took 6 hours, which was ok. But unless you actually live in LA and work in San Fran...what was the actual purpose of this train? What burning need did it fulfill? Or was it what I expect...just a huge boondoggle aimed at enriching politicians and construction companies. And nothing else. In a state that is bankrupt. I know the answer is the latter.

248 When you're talking about flying versus driving versus train, one also has to take into account how one will get around at the destination. If one has to rent a car at the train station, one is no better off. If one is headed to a hotel in the suburbs, that hotel may well pick up guests at the airport for free.

Then there is the problem of incremental cost. The added cost per body of driving is minimal. The added cost for trains and planes is another ticket.

Actually, a surprising number of modern pharmaceuticals are in fact herbal remedies, refined and processed for consistency and predictable effects.

That's why I get annoyed with the medical marijuana scam. While there are definite pharmacological effects of the stuff, there's no definition of dosage, concentration of THC or other compounds etc. It's like if you had chronic pain and your doc prescribed "opoids", without specifying whether he was talking about morphine, oxy, vicodin, coedine, heroin, fentanyl etc., or the dosage, leaving all of that up to you to decide.

Now it's called Total Tech. Originally if you dumped a drink into your laptop, they'd repair or replace it. Now you pay for parts. A frequent argument is that it would allow people to live a considerable distance away from Los Angeles and San Francisco and commute to work from an area with much cheaper housing.

Two problems with this: most jobs aren't in downtown San Francisco or downtown Los Angeles, or anyplace near a high rail stop, and having a lot of stops defeats the purpose of having high-speed rail.

339 Mike,
He's at Camp Pendleton. He went to the clinic there several times only
To be ignored. So he went to the ER on the navy base. His corpsman friend said that was his next option. That was the first time anyone performed a physical examination on him.

Yeah. I have encountered that sort of thing before, and have adopted an approach (in my dotage), 'Look, I'm (insert a lot of years here) years old. I've lived in and with this body for (years), I've been through all of the normal stuff, and some abnormal stuff...I know when something is wrong, and something is wrong'.

That seems to get their attention.

342 Mike,
I offered to fly down and go "Momma Bear."

He politely declined.

You can still find it at archive.org. Brave browser automatically gave me the option to search for it there and took me to it.

346 “Those of you who think the vaccine kills people can use me as a test. If I die, you were right. If I don’t die, and have no ill effects, you were wrong, and should admit it (at least to yourselves). Better yet, you should admit that you were misled, and tell the world who misled you, so other people can benefit by avoiding those fearmongers.” — Bodybuilding Icon and Author Doug Brignole (1960-2022)

347 nurse- when I was in Basic don't remember why but my for no other term than church godparents came into the base to see me for really a few minutes. No idea how they pulled the strings to get there but personally was embarrassed for the little interview.

348 SMOD it's not killing everyone, maybe a percent of a percent, possibly a few percent could have long term bad health effects. But all that is squashed so hard by the take it or die only makes me not want to get it even more.

350 Skip,
I was mostly kidding. I'd not interfere unless, A) he asked me to, or 2) it was life or death.

My boys still hugged me in front of their friends, all the way through school. I told them, "anyone who makes fun of you for hugging your mom needs a hug themselves."

353 Camp Lejuene

Over simplified, but it sounds as if all you need are a record of having been there more than 30 days during the specified period. DD-214 should show if you (or your spouse/parent) were assigned there, and you have one of the specified conditions. Might be harder if you were only TDY there, or a contractor or civilian employee. Dependents may have to prove they occupied government quarters, or spent significant time on base.

And they want 40 per cent? It sounds like a purely administrative process, rather than a trial. Is there some trick that prevents a VSO from assisting?

358 There is a lot of misconceptions about the intended scope of the project and goals of the California bullet train.

It was never intended for general intercity transportation or mass transportation.

It was intended to run the short buses from SoCal to Sacramento without having to interact with anyone in between.
