Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt Signs Bill Blocking Hospitals From Receiving Funds If They Perform Gender Transitions on Minors
The GOP can behave as a functional, responsive party -- if we make it.
There are many "Republicans" who are still "uncomfortable" fighting back against the Culture War the Democrats have fought and won -- almost unopposed -- over the past 20 years. They feel it's "icky" and "judgmental" and "Not Quite Our Class, Dear." They feel this is something the Uneducated Deplorables do -- not something that the Educated Better Sort of Republicans do. The status they crave is conferred only by liberals and liberal-dominated institutions and so they conform themselves and their politics into a shape acceptable to the status-conferring liberal hegemony. David French embodies this line of class-based, status-seeking line of "thinking." And what's worse, they're not even content to remain non-combatants in the culture war -- no, they actively side with the left, and beat up people on the right for attempting to defend themselves. They frag their "own side" to prove their true loyalty, which is to the left.
Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt (R) on Tuesday signed a bill that blocks University of Oklahoma hospitals from receiving federal American Rescue Plan Act funds if its children's hospital continues to offer gender-affirming care. Oklahoma Children's hospital in a statement said it was no longer prescribing hormone therapies or performing gender-affirming surgical procedures on patients younger than 18. Stitt in a statement on Tuesday called on the state legislature to pass a bill that bans doctors in the state from providing gender-affirming care to minors when it reconvenes in February. Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt (R) on Tuesday signed into law a measure blocking one of the state's largest hospital systems from receiving federal funds if it continues to offer gender-affirming care to transgender youth. The bill signed Tuesday was passed last week by state lawmakers during a special session to appropriate the state's $1.87 billion in federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. Under the proposal by two Republican state House members and two Republican senators, University of Oklahoma (OU) hospitals will only be permitted to receive $108 million in ARPA funds -- including nearly $40 million earmarked for a pediatric mental health facility -- if Oklahoma Children's Hospital ceases to provide gender-affirming care. On Tuesday, Stitt said signing the bill was only the first step toward shielding children from "permanent gender transition surgeries and therapies." "It is wildly inappropriate for taxpayer dollars to be used for condoning, promoting, or performing these types of controversial procedures on healthy children," Stitt said in a statement, and called on the legislature to enact a total ban on gender-affirming care for minors when it reconvenes in February. Some state legislators had urged Stitt to call another special session for the purpose of passing legislation to outlaw such care for youth. ... Stitt in March signed into law another bill that bars transgender women and girls from competing on female sports teams, and a measure that has prevented transgender students in Oklahoma from using school facilities like restrooms and locker rooms consistent with their gender identity has been in place since May.
These are not Republicans; these are Democrats who like low taxes and want to keep minorities out of their suburbs. They must be purged from holding any positions in the party. They are still allowed to vote for us, which they will do, about one third of the time. Because they're Democrats with slight Republican leanings. We can no longer allow them a place in any position of political leadership or influence -- including in magazines of ideological persuasion. We are not fighting to reduce corporate tax rates. That is not the sum of our aspirations.

Tyranny wins again. The last place anyone should want the government involved is in personal healthcare decisions. The government is not your doctor, and should not be binding your doctor to make recommendations - or fail to make recommendations - that your doctor knows to be in the best interests of your health.
This is chilling to an extreme degree, and marks an escalation. Thanks to the poor decision on Roe v Wade, your doctor cannot prescribe an abortion even if it is essential to your physical or mental health. Transgender children are now second-class citizens in Oklahoma, and will be denied the affirming healthcare they need.
What will they outlaw next? Contraception? Cancer treatment?

Saul Alinsky said pretty much the same thing. It's not enough, he said, to elect the people that we want. We also need to hold their feet to the fire to keep them accountable to us.
Frankly, it has been our fault for thinking that our job ended once we voted the GOP into office. It's the swamp that gets - and stays - in their faces, constantly reminding them who put them there. We need to take that responsibility back. Or at least be ready to punish them when they stray too far away from the base.

I can answer this one: the Oklahoma legislature doesn't meet until February and making the practice illegal would be a legislative act. However, OU Children's hospital is part of the State Board of Regents; effectively part of state government. Stitt can't make it illegal without legislation, but he can make executive orders on the use of state funds. Rest assured, come February when the legislature meets, it will be made illegal.

When I moved to Oklahoma six years ago I still had my Iowa CC permit, which Oklahoma recognized. It expired two years later. I wasn't wild about having to go through the whole process again but was making plans when Kevin Stitt saved me. Hello, Constitutional carry.
Four years ago Stitt signed a bill making medical marijuana legal (and shocking most Oklahomans who never expected that from a Republican). This has made a huge difference in the level of opiod addiction.
On August 25 Stitt signed into law a measure that prohibits abortion for any reason other than to save the life of the mother.
Kevin Stitt would make an excellent POTUS.

I think you're missing my point. My point is that they did get crazier. The entire party went insane, and that's because the more moderate elements were wiped out leaving no one but the crazies in positions of power within the party.
Another wipeout is going to make it worse, but the hope is that as the overall sphere of influence of the party decreases and the relative fight of the GOP increases, we have no where to go but better.

Well, if we have elections in 5 weeks (no word of canceled elections yet, and I was assured that they'd be canceled by June), then some lever of political power still functions, especially if the 2021 VA election gets replicated across the country.
If that red wave happens, the real change will be at the state level, where it will have the most effect. Imagine a GOP governor in PA suddenly signing election integrity measures with teeth. Imagine a red NM legislature investigating the Democrat governor. Imagine SC FINALLY passing constitutional carry.
That's the sort of thing that is taking the next few inches in a 100-yard drive, one more first down to keep possession of the ball (god, I hate football).

I'm not going to complain about anyone who says "I'm not voting," especially at the Fed level. You know what we'll get if the GOP wins both houses? Tax cuts and giveaways to the monopolists. That's it. They'll complain they can't do anything else. State and local level still has some effect. Most people here want the red wave, and I don't, and here's why: Let's assume that best case scenario (red wave in November, then GOP retention of both houses, plus President Trump or DeSantis or whoever in '24).
In the next term, we get a few bones thrown to the donor class, no advancement of anything approaching a right-wing agenda, and no rollback whatsoever of the Dem agenda.
Then we get 4 more years of pure madness and increasing totalitarianism while both parties stand shoulder to shoulder, once again, sidelining President Whoever.
Now, consider mine... this won't happen, but let's pretend for a moment it did. A critical mass of GOP voters wake up to the shell game and stay the fuck home - GOP loses in November, and again in '24.
That would finish the ridiculous Republican Party as a viable political force. They'd go the way of the Whigs, never to rise again. The Dems lose their first and strongest line of defense forever, and the path is cleared for an actual opposition movement with energy and vision to take to the streets.

The number of Latinos moving from the Democrats to the Republicans is a seismic event not a trickle. Large number of black voters as well. And now the Republican party is the party of the working man and woman and not the rich, that would be the Democrats. The biggest source of frustration is that while the State Senate is dominated by strong conservatives, the GOP-e/Chamaber of Commerce caucus still control the Texas House. And that makes getting good legislation passed very difficult.
and it always bears repeating that the Texas Governor's office, by design, is one of the weakest such offices in any of the states. Abbott has actually been able to do some things to make it a little bit stronger than it was.

I was an army JAG. Any claim French makes that he was in any kind of combat is total b.s. I can see maybe he was in a convoy moving from one base to another and the convoy got attacked. But he would never have been sent on a "mission" outside the wire.

We've already seen some evidence. Maya Flores is one huge example. Not just the first Mexican born woman elected to Congress but she did it as a conservative Republican in a district that hasn't voted Republican in many decades.
Saw a poll the other day that the number of Latinos who consider themselves conservative has swung toward Republicans by over 50 points. Turns out some of the people the Republican party has written off for decades will vote Republican if given a reason.

in his interview, he said they were very open to talking to him the first time, then promised they would interview him in more detail later - then stonewalled him for 2 years. The Grand Jury should have talked to him and hasn't.
