24 Porte Saint-Denis was the gate where the kings of France would pass through on their return to Paris from religious services at the Saint-Denis basilica. The last sovereign to pass through the triumphal arch was Queen Victoria on her visit to the 1855 Universal Exhibition in Paris.

25 The scale and perspective are off. The cars are tiny, the "street lights" are huge, and the skinny building in the foreground changes scale depending on how I look at it. This is a weird painting.

_______________

St. Denis is very famous in France. Most of all, he was beheaded and his body walked around holding his head.

He is depicted holding his head in once of the statues to the left entrance to Notre Dame Cathedral.

Very bizarre when you look at all of the saints and then see a headless guy holding a head in his hands.

Fun Fact: There are at least two Saints Denis: Bishop Denis of Paris and Dionysius the Areopagite, and also a Pseudo-Dionysius. When the Gothic architectural style was first being developed, Abbot Suger mixed up the Dennises, wanting to honor the Bishop but mistakenly using the writings of another as inspiration to remodel the royal chapel of Sant-Denis.

100 As a neighborhood, Saint Denis is a virtual no-go zone for criminals.

According to Wikipedia, it has 350.71 criminal incidents per 1000 inhabitants, far higher than the national average (83 per 1000) and even higher than the crime rate of the Seine-Saint-Denis department (95.67 per 1000). Police efficiency has been reported as very low with only 19.82% of crimes solved by the police.

Thin buildings were a thing in some cities. If you look up the street from the Tiber toward St Peter's for example, before Mussolini, there was a row of buildings from the river to the square. They had to have been pretty shallow if there were rooms facing each street.

I 'think' this is a photo from the cuppola of St Peters looking toward the river.

https://tinyurl.com/2p94ebc7

Yeah, I think that's right. Here is another with more of the landmarks shown (Castel St Angelo, that bridge that I cannot think of the name of.) Those buildings in the center were all ripped out. They managed to pack a lot into those spaces. They did not face the way I expected they would. Rome is a rat's nest and has been for around 2500 years.

I know a lot of artists were once obsessed with Paris, though I never quite got it - of course, because I hate cities. But to me, if you're in a beautiful country like France, pocked with pretty little towns and bucolic scenery and beaches, why paint a heap of stones and steel and glass?

I think it speaks to a fundamental difference in the way different people view what it means to be human.

Yep. He denies it, but even if the story is true, so what? He can't force anybody to have an abortion, so she must have been the one who wanted it. The fact that he agreed to pay for it just shows that he was being responsible and respecting the woman's choice, and isn't that what the left wants men to do?
Posted by: TrivialPursuer--FJB at October 04, 2022 08:37 AM (MvHI3)

I've given this a lot of thought. I think this might be what some LIVs on the left want. What THE LEFT wants, however, is for women to be very pro-abortion, men to largely be very opposed to abortion, and for the government to force men to both accept abortion AND to fund it.

The slaughter of the innocent isn't enough for them. They must both sow discord between the sexes and shove their evil in everyone's faces.

I blame those GPS monitors now found on fleet trucks. The drivers dare not exceed their mandated speed limit, even briefly, to pass another vehicle, but they will pull out to pass if they going 1/4 mph faster than the other fleet truck with its GPS tattletale.

Even under Pope Francis the Red, Roman Catholic doctrine absolutely bans abortion. It's a Big Deal. If it were an Internet RFC, it would be a "MUST NOT" rather than a "SHOULD NOT".

Abortion is a mortal sin and means automatic excommunication (no priest action required). Helping someone procure one likewise.

Strictly a pope can't change existing doctrines dogmatically proclaimed by past popes or the magisterium due to the infallibility of the prior teachings.

370 The 3D printed guns that were "bought back?" I recall someone who does what's called magnet fishing and pulled up all sorts of rusted out guns from a local lake/stream and "sold" those back to their local PD during one of the buy backs.

By the looks of them, none were salvageable, but it was noted that many/most were probably used in a crime and would be examined.

IIRC there was about 15 of them found this way. In one lake or stream. Or so the story goes....

397 Huck Follywood,

hey you ran off from the other thread.

do you believe turky just gives oz cirizenship with not demand of loyalty? he was in the army, do think he did not swear an oath? he says he has it because he wants to see his parents, do you think turky would not use that against him?

More supposition from you. No evidence, so you just fill in with Fetterman talking points.

I get that you don't like Oz (I'm not wild about his politics either), that you dislike his Turkish citizenship, and that you want him to make a gesture to demonstrate his fidelity to America. I think his entire history demonstrates he is a great American, since he lives here and has raised his daughters here, and built several careers here. He is a surgeon, an author and a teacher, an entrepreneur, and a TV guy. None of which he "needed" to do, since he married an Asplundh and could have lived off her wealth.

I know a guy who served in Afghanistan...for Sweden. I know several who served in the Israeli army. All are good Americans. Your opinion and mine on Oz having dual citizenship differ.
