Nord Stream Pipelines 1 and 2, Which Carry Russian Natural Gas to Germany, Leaking Into the North Sea;
Sabotage Strongly Suspected

gasbubbling.jpg
Gas leaking into the North Sea.

This is going to get a little conspiratorial.

Two undersea pipelines crucial to delivering Russian natural gas to Germany were hit with mysterious leaks on Monday, prompting concerns of sabotage.

Why it matters: The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines have been central to the energy crisis that has enveloped Europe in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

While Nord Stream 2 hasn't entered commercial operation -- its certification was halted on the eve of the invasion -- Nord Stream 1 provided a crucial pathway for Russian gas to reach Europe until earlier this month, when Russia closed the pipeline citing maintenance concerns.

The big picture: Two leaks were detected in the Nord Stream 1 pipeline and one in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. While neither pipe was operating at the time the leaks were discovered, both were filled with gas, Reuters reported.

Via the French outlet BFMTV, two underwater explosions were detected just before the leaks were sited. (My translation.)

Two underwater explosions detected before the Nord Stream leaks

Two underwater explosions "very likely due to detonations" have been recorded in proximity to the sites of the leaks of the pipelines Nord Stream 1 and 2 shortly before their detection, a Swedish seismic institute announced Tuesday.

A first "massive release of energy" of a magnitude 1.9 [Richter, I assume] was recorded in night between Sunday and Monday at 2:03 am local (12:03 am GMT) southwest of the Danish island of Bornholm, then another of magnitude 2.3 at 7:04 pm Monday night northeast of the island, Peter Schmidt of the National Swedish Seismology Network to the AFP. "We interpret it as most likely originating from a form of detonation," he said.

I'm a little unsure if they mean a deliberate detonation via explosive charges or the like, or maybe a detonation of the gas caused by, I don't know, a natural accident. There shouldn't be a lot of free oxygen down there so I don't know how an explosion would happen, even assuming something made a spark.

If these were planted charges, why did they go off so many hours apart? One went off early Monday morning at 2:03 am, the next went off Monday night at 7:04 pm. What kind of timing is that?

Was it not explosives at all? Was it just divers cutting into the pipelines with underwater torches, and the torches themselves provoked the explosions? That seems dangerous to the divers.

On the other hand, if this is all accidental and due to natural causes -- how did both pipes get ruptured?

Denmark's prime minister says it's "hard to imagine" that the ruptures are "accidental:"

Assuming this was a deliberate detonation --

Why blow up a pipeline that wasn't delivering gas anyway, due to Putin's sanctions?

Maybe, some speculate, because there were protests in Germany demanding that the pipelines be reopened?

And the way to reopen the pipelines is to pressure European governments to start negotiating with Russia to end the war?

protestsnordstream.jpg

As you can see, Ukrainians don't want the pipeline reopened.

And Biden previously vowed, back in February, that "there will no longer be a Nord Stream 2" if Russia invades Ukraine.

I don't know if I'd put any stock in what that demented fool says. He does not speak for the US government nor make US policy, as the US government informs us weekly.

Darren J. Beattie is blaming the US, "or its proxies:"

Darren J. Beattie
@DarrenJBeattie

Before yesterday, the only impediment to Germany receiving Russian gas from Nordstream 2 was political--Scholz wouldn't allow it

Germans demonstrated demanding the pipeline open

Now that USA (or its proxies) destroyed the pipeline, Germany is fucked

...

USA sabotaged major gas pipeline from Russia to Germany, and Germany isn't going to do shit about it

Germany is not a sovereign country.

...

Champagne bottles popping at Atlantic Council right now

Yeah I don't know about that. Something really risky like this would only be done by the people with the greatest stake in the outcome -- that is, the Ukranians themselves.

But who knows if they had some unofficial help from former CIA people working for one of the many well-funded private intelligence agencies based in DC.

For their part, Ukraine is blaming... Russia.

This is the "Adviser to the Head of the Office of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy."

@Podolyak_M

"Gas leak" from NS-1 is nothing more that a terrorist attack planned by Russia and an act of aggression towards EU. Russia wants to destabilize economic situation in Europe and cause pre-winter panic. The best response and security investment -- tanks for Ukraine. Especially German ones...

ukraine.jpg

That seems suspicious.

But maybe, who knows, maybe it was Russia. They are sneaky sons-of-bitches, and the war has been going badly for them.

And just because there have been protests to turn the Nord Stream pipe on -- we have no idea how extensive those protests were, or if they had any chance at all of pressuring the German government.

And those protests could be, legitimately, RUSSIAN DISINFORMATION. Russia pulls a lot of operations with respect to energy -- after all, they fund the anti-fracking movement in the US. I imagine they have similar operations in Germany.

And this is a possibly War-Ending move if it's Ukraine -- this would lose them Europe. Would they do this, based on the iffy premise that a few protests might push the German government to reduce its support of Ukraine? They still have the big guns, the UK and US.

I don't want to be played by Ukraine, but I also don't want my not-wanting-to-be-played-by-Ukraine to make me open to being played by Russia, either.

Bottom line, only a handful of potential actors have the capability to sabotage in that location.

US government--military or intel--is prime suspect.

If it was divers, IMO they would use a lot less explosives.
1.) Divers can get right up next to the pipeline to emplace the explosives.
2.) Hauling around hundreds or thousands of pounds of explosives by hand underwater is not easy.

Could the explosives have been emplaced by a ship?
Airplane?

Submarine? This method really limits the possible actors. Russia, US, Britain, France, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Germany (are any German subs even operational?), Poland, others?

Someone cited in the art thread that the depth of around 225 feet, which is about 100 psi hydrostatic pressure on the outside of the pipeline. Even without gas flowing inside the piping or with a residual pressure less than normal operating pressure, I wouldn't necessarily expect 100 psi external to the pipeline to cause an implosion of the pipeline, absent some deterioration of the integrity of the piping, intentional or otherwise.

Maybe, some speculate, because there were protests in Germany demanding that the pipelines be reopened?

And the way to reopen the pipelines is to pressure European governments to start negotiating with Russia to end the war?

++++
That's my knee-jerk reaction, yes. There's not a lot of reason to suspect that Russia would do this themselves. They control the taps on the other end, and destroying their own physical plant doesn't make sense (except possibly as a false-flag to blame the Americans). The Ukrainians could want to do it, but I'm not sure they have the technical capability. We have the capability, but the desire is unknown. If it was us, and we did it to prevent Germany or other European countries from suing for a separate peace, we're total motherfuckers because that means we're holding the continent hostage for energy - energy we can't produce enough of to supply them without starving ourselves - to extend a war in which we're not directly involved.

You can find the pipeline using a MAD / magnetic anomaly detector. Fly lengthwise along it and deliver a large bomb to the sea floor with a time delay. 2 days later? BOOM!

The Swedes said the booms registered 2.3 on multiple seismometers.

I think we're all reasonably confident the US can do something like this. Motive-wise, the likely culprits our ourselves and Ukraine. I'm skeptical Ukraine could pull this off, it'd take others providing the resources and need coaching through the process.

266 Biden is demented but he seemed pretty clear in that statement. Of course he was maybe being boastful (as his nature is) and threatening Russia before they crossed into Ukraine. ... and maybe some advisor made the mistake of telling Joe the real potential response, so Joe just "put it out there" (Joe being Joe).

Since USA is funding most of this war (and DeepState really wanted the war, with their insistence of Ukraine in NATO) ... seems like we would have been advised/consulted if "our side" did it. Globalists wants Russia destroyed or weakened ... idk.

But the junta has no real consideration for the economic well-being of U.S. citizens. I ask if they would have any consideration for EU citizens, as they seek to harm and hinder Putin's Russia in any way they can to escalate the Ukrainian war as a costly diversion from a likely to be more costly election.

344 I look at polls every day. I know this is a ridiculous obsession. Last week everything moving in the right direction. Trafalger polls. considered most accurate, all showing Republican challengers in excellent shape with in a couople of points or leading. yesterday I see a post from the NY Times saying Mastriano behind by 12 points, no ads, no money. Today all the polls show everything different. Things do not change overnight.
For accurate info read Rich Baris and Robert Cahaly. Trustworthy sources. All the polling and rhetoric is not going to change the reality of what is happening across the country.

Honestly? Pretty much anyone. Any state actor has this capacity and and any group who can bodge together a depth charge and a timer. I think all you would need after that would be a fishing boat, a GPS, and a magnetometer you can drag behind the boat to make sure you're on top of the pipeline.

401 MORON BLEG!

We're having HVAC problems.
Low coolant. They claim the coil may be leaking and coolant "switch" is frozen over. the unit is a Tappan, which is over 17 years old. They say the coil needs replacing at a cost of $3500.

The coils is no longer made so putting in a "frankenstein" coil from a different manufacturer is what they would do. or, a new system(!). Roughly, $10K.
Or we can put in coolant and see how long it lasts. Roughly $400.
Okay, so do these prices sound about right for the DFW area?

I was shown pictures of the "rust" around the coils. But, the coils are copper and the "unit" is aluminum. I don't see how there could be rust. Maybe another reddish corrosion?
Anyway, if we choose the worst option which is a new HVAC unit. Who makes the best system? Carrier, Lennox, Trane, Amana(?). Which would you get and why if there's a good reason.

Any and all information would be greatly appreciated.

Just replaced our units last year due to the same thing. Once any of the coils gets a pinhole in it, you're screwed with an older unit, because they use the old refrigerant that was actually good.

17 years is approaching the useful lifespan of any unit. Usually you'd be lucky to get 20ish years out of them. Our conked out at 21 years.

Once you start bodging them together you're probably buying yourself another 5 years or so, at which point you're replacing it anyway. I live by "Buy once, cry once" and so had them both replaced. One four-ton and one 4.5-ton unit, to the tune of ~$9k each.

They need new fuel, likely major new parts and refurbishments too. Want to bet they cannibalized parts from shutdown plants to maintain the operating plants? We regularly did that here in the US.

Means (Poland has ships and access to the Baltic Sea), motive (they were against it, and fear it increases the chance Poland will be invaded), and opportunity (right off their coast, nobody watching). Poland has all three.

476 Four points worth making:

1. The Danish island of Bornholm is actually closer to Sweden, Germany, and Poland than to any other part of Denmark, so the explosions were further east than you might be thinking.

2. By an amazing coincidence, there is another pipeline passing near Bornholm which officially opened today, though the gas isn't supposed to start flowing until Saturday, the 1st. It crosses the Russian pipelines and will bring Norway's abundant supplies of natural gas across the Baltic to Poland, from which some will be piped on to other countries. That will greatly ease the gas shortage the Russians and someone else (?) have created in Europe by first cutting off the NordStream pipelines and then blowing them up.

That's a point in favor of thinking the Russians blew up their own pipelines. If they weren't planning to reopen them, and they are planning to blow up the Norway-Poland pipeline to really screw the West, blowing up their own makes a good alibi: "Whoever blew up theirs must be the same ones who blew up ours, we couldn't possibly have wanted to blow up ours, therefore someone else must have blown up theirs (probably the US or Ukraine), QED."

477 Cont'd from #476:

3. Ukraine has almost nothing in the way of a navy, and certainly no submarines - Russia stole their navy when they stole Crimea. Super-fit young Ukrainian men with a military bearing renting boats in a Baltic seaport, hauling heavy footlockers aboard, and going out without any local guides in the middle of the night would likely have attracted attention. So, US did it for Ukraine? Conceivable. Ukraine did it themselves? Incredible.

4. Another plausible suspect: China. (Not my idea: somebody on Twitter said it first.) Thanks to sanctions, they're already getting plenty of oil from Russia at half the world market price. Doing the same for the price of natural gas would really help them out, while screwing Russia, Germany, and all the rest of Europe. It's a win-win-win. Would blowing up the Norway-Poland pipeline help them, too? Hard to tell.

478 When I was active duty fifty years ago, a shaped-charge version of det cord was available. Blow up stuff nice.
From which I presume it is now commercially available, or criminally available and in improved models.
225' is pretty deep and considered in some cases a "technical" dive and verging on dangerous. Which means a professional diver with extensive training working at 300' could get down there. Don't need official for anything.
Water being incompressible, you don't need as much explosive power to do damage as in the air. Still, blowing a hole in a curved surface would take less power with a shaped charge and thus less stuff to haul around than just a pile of Semtex or something. So a turn or two around the pipeline and off you go to decompress and the whole operation has a smaller footprint. And that's from a surface craft.
The smaller the necessary operation, the larger the roster of capable suspects.

488 ... With the advent of electronic controls it is trivial to implement a 2-stage system just using an old analog thermostat. Stage 1 just starts up at half-fan, half-heat, and if the thermostat is still issuing a call for heat 10 or 15 minutes later, stage 2 comes on full-fan full-heat.

Smoothed out my heating so it was barely noticeable. When it's just starting to get cold outside the heater never gets out of the first (half-heat) stage.

Actually my house remains on first stage pretty much all winter. If a house is decently insulated, it doesn't take a lot of heat to keep it up to temperature. The second stage only needs to come into play when it is really cold out.

So don't go super cheap and get an old fashioned single stage. 2-stage units are hardly more expensive and are much better.

489 You guys need to turn off your paid programmed news. Today the Donboss overwhelming voted to join the Russian Federation. No one was Forced. Go see Patrick Lancaster, Eva Bartlett in you tube. The media is too dishonest a d Zelensky cancelled media a long time ago. Russia is already building apartments there. As a US citizen you.need to know US NATO are supporting a nazi regime in Ukraine. The people of Donboss have been slaughtered for 8 years by Ukraine military. There is no civil war. US NATO want to destroy Russia so they provoke Russia. Ukraine military is,decimated thanks to Biden, Boris Johnson. They could care labout people of Ukraine or Russia. Zelensky is controlled by Washington and nazis. Now US NATO military are operating very advanced technology that takes years to train on. US NATO want to provoke Russia to use nuclear. Russia is nit going to Saratoga a billions of dollars investment. Russia gas a right to sell gas to anyone, it's not US business. US is threatening countries that don't sanction Russia by sanctions on them. My government is out of control
