One tidbit from News Nation caught my eye that puts all this into perspective. The Border Patrol in Texas is so overwhelmed that shelters are crammed with 3x as many illegal immigrants as they are designed for, and the overflow is so bad that they just gave up and release over a thousand "undocumented migrants" in a single day.
U.S. Border Patrol has been so overwhelmed in the region and the shelters are at capacity -- one processing center is three times above its normal capacity, nonprofit shelters are starving for beds and volunteers, and a sudden surge of arrivals from Venezuela is ineligible for expulsion, the Border Report reported. Fifty migrants show up in Martha's Vineyard and it is a crisis that everybody in America is supposed to be outraged about. But over a thousand released in one day is business as usual if you live in a border town. Hardly worth talking about outside of conservative media. Certainly not worth taking the time to consider the effects on the residents of El Paso who are legal citizens or immigrants. Nope, they won't. Their towns will become transit points. The aliens arrive, then are rounded up and dispatched to an intermediate facility financed directly by the federal government, then will be resettled in lower-income suburbs of nearby cities or dispatched greater distances to settle in lower-density conservative areas with even fewer resources.
Most of these 50 people are probably going to land in the Boston metro, with some being dispersed further.
Three or four more of these and they'll have the model down pat.

It isn't the number of people, it's where they were. It's one of the reasons the overreaction to this very minor inconvenience has been so gigantic.
Martha's Vineyard is a super-elite enclave, a power center. It's where the people who are actually in charge hang out. It's not a normal place that's just of the Party or adjacent to it, it's a hardcore inner-party enclave. This is why the reaction has been so extreme. It isn't about the 50 people, it's about the incursion into one of their fortresses.
It's also why the story has legs. The reaction makes no sense superficially, and so people are puzzled by it. That will probably make some minority of them question it and perhaps start to answer those questions.

Stunts like the MV one will not change anything. Which doesn't mean they shouldn't happen, good PR for those doing them, yukks for many.
It's just the most glaring and obvious example of a near universal phenomenon. Few know, understand, or care about anything going on that doesn't directly, immediately, negatively affect them. They're not citizens, they're just people living around each other. All kinds of disastrous national policies being inflicted on the country, for years. Only on occasion does the populace bestir itself to vote for change - and with the partial exception of 2017-2020, they don't get it, even then.
And you have the dumbing down effect. Even direct, immediate, negative impact on people is often not understood, or clouded by indoctrinated delusions. Utility rates in CA, for example - no revolt, not even a whisper ("oh, guess I need to get some of those subsidized solar panels like my neighbors!"). Enjoy!

Most bases have a surplus of housing or the ability to put up tents to deal with training events.

It has had that distinction for decades, maybe since the beginning. It is not infrequent to meet people here in the Borderland area who were born in the USA and then grew up in Ciudad Juarez and then came back to go to college or for work. Far more common are extended families that live on both sides of the border and are still in close contact. The facts as I know them:
CBP/ICE released the illegals into the US with no restriction on where they can go
Many of the illegals being released are dropped-off by CBP/ICS in overcrowded towns and cities in the Southwest. Without DHS assistance. Left to fend for themselves and somehow pay for a bus ticket if the want to go elsewhere.
AZ, TX, and FL are offering FREE transportation to these DHS-abandoned illegals, to several locations where there is less overcrowding, more charitable resources for them to draw on, and much better opportunities to find employment at a better wage than they'll find now in El Paso, Eagle Pass, Brownsville, and small Texas towns within 150 miles of the Rio Grande.
The illegals are permitted to end their bus ride whenever they want along the way to the advertised destination (as far as I know),
Conclusion: AZ, TX, and FL are treating the released illegals agreeing to be transported free to the Northeast more humanely than the Federal Government is.
