Daily Tech News 14 September 2022

Top Story

  • Congressional testimony from Peiter Zatko says that Twitter is run by idiots and infested with foreign spies. (WCCFTech)

Which former we knew and latter comes as no surprise.

Also that the company executives have been routinely lying to the board, to shareholders, and to the SEC.

Zatko was, until January, Twitter's head of security, before being abruptly fired and then receiving a $7 million settlement.

  • It must be purely coincidence then that at least six "research firms" are offering money to besmudge Zatko. (New Yorker)

Former coworkers at Stripe, Google, and DARPA report being bombarded with aggressive requests for paid interviews about Zatko - with the clear implication that you had better be prepared to dish the dirt.
The consultant told Provos that its analysts were assessing Zatko's "personality professionally and socially," his "strengths and weaknesses," "motives for his whistle-blower complaint and any similar past complaints," his "need for attention," and whether he was a "zealot or ideologue," "conspiratorial," or "vengeful." She also said they were interested in Zatko's "view of Elon Musk and Musk's bid for Twitter."
And they were prepared to pay $1000 for this, which is a wonderful motivation for discovering a previously latent speech impediment.

How this reads to me is that everything Zatko has said is true and Twitter's management is in serious trouble, but I should beware of wishcasting.

Tech News

  • A long review of Douglas Hofstadter's Godel, Escher, Bach with no part IV. (Less Wrong)

I first read GEB when I was 16 - it was a Christmas gift from my mum. Which tells you something about both of us. It's probably heavy going for a 16 year old but the way it is written you can read it once and get the surface of it, skimming over the maths-heavy pages, and then come back to it again a year later an get a lot more out of it. Maybe more than once.

Also, Hofstadter is right about the nature of consciousness.

  • GlobalWafers is starting construction of a $5 billion factory in Texas this November. (Tom's Hardware)

Before you can build a silicon chip you need a silicon wafer - a sliver of ultra-pure crystalline silicon the size of an LP record. There are many chip factories in the US but this will be the first new wafer factory in 20 years.

  • A tale of two hardware firewalls. (Serve the Home)

One good, one less good. And the only difference being the case - but since these are passively cooled, the case makes a big difference.

  • China has formally accused the NSA of spying, which is the function of the NSA. (Gizmodo)

This may be true, in which case it's dog-bites-man except that the NSA broke Rule One of Spycraft, which is don't get caught.

Or it may be China making shit up to divert attention from getting caught spying on other countries itself, which, well, same as above.

  • They said I was daft to build a datacenter in Strasbourg, but I built it all the same. It burned down. Then I built another one. (The Register)

OVH has built a new, hopefully less flammable, datacenter on the site of the one that burned to the ground last year.

Last year was not a good time for datacenters.

Disclaimer: That burned down. Then I built another one. That caught fire, burned down, and exploded with enough force to blow out windows in Vladivostok. But the fourth one is waiting on the insurance money.

23 It is kind of hilarious that Twitter operates literally like the old plutocrats in movies and media from 40 years ago. Chomping cigars and going after anyone who is trying to speak against them and that they may be harming 'the people.'

I never saw Erin Brockovich, but a scene I remember from the trailer that has stuck in my brain is one where a witness is reading from a letter she got from Evil Corporation in which they tell her 'You must be stupid, Stupid, STUPID.' It seemed so over the top as to be incredible. Nope Twitter does exactly the same shit. Huh.

I dunno. Running is unlike anything else in getting your heart rate up, but it seems like it is extraordinarily hard on your body in general and your joints in particular. One reason I went and spent the money on a nice rowing machine. Low impact. My knees and hips do not feel like I have taken a sledge hammer to them.

28 Psalm 4-God's faithfulness:

https://tinyurl.com/mrss2xzp

David Jeremiah, who is
a pastor and Biblical expositor has this to say about this psalm:

Why pray? We are often confused about how prayer works, Does the psalmist's fervency in prayer mean that all his worries and troubles will disappear? Not necessarily. Often the answer we have in mind is not the one God has in mind. The goal is to have our hearts want what they receive from God, rather than ones that always ask for what they want.

In Hs great love and. wisdom, God knows what to give each of us in answer to our prayers. Prayer does not always change our situation, but it can change us. In prayer, we bring our anxieties to a wide, sovereign and loving God and we ask Him why these things have happened and how we can cope, His answer doesn't change. The world and its answers will never be enough. Only God is.

I don't think the woman was endorsing that everybody run. She just said for her it was a physical way to connect with God in prayer because she hadn't been able to connect with God after her brother's death. I don't run. I do pray a lot while I walk-about things I see on my walk which I am thankful for, for people I pass, for other situations. In this way, I get exercise and pray.

Swimming is as good as running for cardiovascular exercise; unfortunately one has to know to do it quite well to achieve that.

Running is innate and therefore easier for most people.

I go low impact. Like you, a rowing machine, in addition a stepper, and free weights. The wife enjoys hiking so we climb 'challenging' hills on a regular basis. We have an inexpensive blowup kayak and love to paddle around. When I was younger I played sports even on frozen fields and I'm sure that did nothing good for my knees and hips.

I think runners, on anything harder then soft gravel, are nuts.

>>Running is unlike anything else in getting your heart rate up, but it seems like it is extraordinarily hard on your body in general and your joints in particular.

The best bang for your buck and lowest impact is intervals of walking and burpees, after a certain age, running is counter-productive.

Especially street running on hard pavement.

If you want to go even lower impact you can sub shadow boxing for either the burpees or the walking.

before the Moo Goo Gai Pandemic, I was going to a boxing gym for their fitness program (their pitch was "learn to box without getting hit"). Great workout; started with jumping rope and ended with the heavy bag. It was divided into three minute "rounds" with a minute in between, just (barely) enough time to catch your breath before the bell rang again

48 I asked for a suggestion for a funny and light movie last night and Pug Mahon suggested "Galaxy Quest" which-because I don't see a lot of "modern" movies-I hadn't seen before. I really recommend it if you hadn't seen it, but if you don't like Tim Allen-he is in it. Anyway, it was very funny and a take off on Star Trek movies. Pug Said it is his favorite Star Trek movie. Alan Rickman is it. He's a very good actor. It's kind of a warm up character for Snape from "Harry Potter". And if none of that appeals to you get some shots of Sigourney Weaver's breasts.

why does politics attract such ugly people

78 I see yootub ads. I see political yootub ads. I hate them. But... Lisa Scheller put one out against her asshole pinko incumbent opponent Susan Wilde that's almost a doozy. Apparently making hay on the fact that Wilde had outright lies in her ads against Scheller and was ordered by a court, of all things, to take it down.

More politicians need to explicitly name and shame their pinko opponents for lying. Spin is one thing. Lying is another.

I don't know what the Lie in this case was, I actively ignore D ads. Which is why i say "almost a doozy".

Don't blame them. They're just copying what they see in academia. That is the new accepted mode of rigorous thought: non sequiturs and cliches.

I am having to run to Sams a couple of times a week for cereal to donate to the local food bank where my wife volunteers. Donations have dried up and Walmart is not sending the food that they used to.

94 mornin yall. The local news asks the question I have been asking for years. Is Macon trying to become Little Chicago?. Well, guess what? The homicide rate is now higher in Macon than Chicago.

Macon is fifth on the Crimealytics list, behind New Orleans, Baltimore, Birmingham, and St. Louis.

Chicago is not even in the top 10.

What a shit hole. It's gonna be ok though, after Macon becomes the Pickleball capital of the world.

97 Look, when you look at the data, the inflation data, we’re seeing more progress, bringing global inflation down in the U.S. economy, as I just stated moments ago. Overall, uh, prices have been essentially flat in our country these last two months. That is welcome news for American families.

Realizing its own misconduct, the FBI made Danchenko a paid CHS in March 2017 - just before the third FISA warrant was submitted in April 2017. This would allow Comey’s FBI to work directly with Danchenko in support of its counter-intelligence investigation against President Trump.

110 I actually met Douglas Hofstadter once, in the 1990s, as a young physics undergrad. I remember virtually nothing of the encounter, except he was somewhat mystified at all the attention GEB had gotten.

111 "Also, Hofstadter is right about the nature of consciousness."

Mmm, beg to differ. See "The Emperor's New Mind" by Roger Penrose. His argument - based on Godel's Theory as well - is better argued, whereas Hofstadter assumes the equivalence of calculation with consciousness. Penrose goes off into the weeds when he starts speculating about the mechanism underlying consciousness, but that doesn't detract from his main argument.
