HOW TO PET A DOG YOU DON'T KNOW according to veterinarians

Tip: Don't pat the dog on its head.

A personal tip from me: Don't lean over a stressed dog you don't know. Or even a stressed pet you DO know, like Oona Mae, above.

Meet The PetMorons

Molly 14.jpg

MollyJameson.jpg

Long-time lurker here, I lost Molly just about a year ago to cancer. She was over 14 and had beat cancer three times earlier. She was a cantankerous, ornery, and completely lovable Staffordshire/Lab mix. Found abandoned at about six weeks old with the rest of her litter. I got her when she was 12 weeks old. She loved to break into my vegetable garden and steal zucchini and cucumbers to snack on. A month before she died, slowed by arthritis and cancer, she still deliberately walked into my knee to push me out of the way so that she could get the first cucumber of the season. She normally slept in my room but when I got home from Afghanistan years ago (deployed as a civilian) she spent the first three nights sleeping against the front door so I couldn't leave without her knowing. She was a good dog.

Despite her irascible nature, all of the other pets in the extended family loved her and she put up with them, even sharing her favorite couch with them.

She looks like a great dog. Looks pretty patient with the other pets in the household. I'm sure you and the other pets miss her. Jameson also shown in the photo above.

Hello there -

Continuing story of our rescue dog Maizie, who, if you'll recall, was purchased as a COVID puppy by people who really didn't want a COVID dog, and kept her kenneled 20 hours a day. We ended up with her about 11 months ago (it was a total God-thing), and boy what a jackpot. She is such a smart, sweet and totally goofy dog, who went from cowering in a corner to leaping off the boat in adoration of swimming (which she had never done before). Only retriever we've ever had that will happily go after whatever you throw, and ... not bring it back. We're working on it though. Such a good girl. Love the thread, makes me smile every Saturday. Thank you.

sasha rr cat.jpg

Hello Pet Morons meet Sasha. She is a 12 year old rescue cat who recently suffered a stroke after valiantly defending herself from an attack by a dog loose in the neighborhood. While she has now substantially recovered and can walk again, the stroke has left her blind. Sasha now loves napping in the sun on her special bed next to the patio doors and dreaming of her glory days when she would climb to the top of the roof and survey the neighborhood for hobos or keeping the squirrels at bay on the back deck. The picture is from about a year ago when she was in her prime and to this day after all that has happened she still doesn't have a bad meow to say to anyone.

So she got memed....

5 Afternoon, all,

I sent 2 pics of Dagny Sophia the Siberian kitten in to KT, but I guess they came in too late. Maybe next week. Or, KT, if you didn't get 'em, please let me know? benzadmiral [at] protonmail [dot] com.

Stirling the Big Black Kitten of War and Pestilence (his new name -- he weighs 8.5 lbs. at only 6 months) is back from his snip. The surgery did not seem to affect him in any way, and he is energetic and affectionate. He made a distinct point last night of taking each toy out of the basket near the TV and playing a little with it, as if marking each one as his own. Miss Linda is keeping little Dagny until tomorrow morning, when we plan to introduce them.

9 I'm going to have to limit my activity on the HQ this weekend, at least on this MacBook Air computer. The charger and cord I bought for it this summer is not charging, despite my also having the board where it plugs in replaced. I have an alternate cord part, the one that plugs into the wall and then into the charger unit. I'll try that.

Daisy's Diary 1/2

Our beautiful young Malinois was kennel-contained at night. She'd wake me at first glimmer of morning light by whining, sometimes barking gently (which is good, because her loud bark is like a firework).

But as she's become smarter about the difference between "shoe" and "chew" toys, we began trusting her to sleep un-caged. (BTW, had to go to the shoe store to get new laces for three different pairs of shoes that Daisy had attacked - chewed the aglets right off; ever try to thread a lace without aglets?) Still, at first light of dawn, Daisy would come over to the bed and start nudging me, pawing at me, and otherwise making me give her my undivided scritching attention, until I finally gave up and got up.

So, I set an alarm. She would bug me, but I'd stay in bed until the alarm went off, then get up. Two days running now, she has stayed in her little bed until the alarm goes off. Then I greet her good morning, get dressed, and we go out to watch the sunrise.

Critters have such amazing internal clocks. I wonder if she'll notice when I start nudging the alarm later by minutes as the sunrise moves. (more)

19 Stirling also seems to have outgrown the need to suckle my arm or chest, as if trying to extract milk. He works me with the front paws and licks my arm or hand, but doesn't chew on me. On one hand, it's kind of disappointing; his trying to get milk from me as if I were his mother was flattering. On the other, it's a relief.

You probably know already but cats have to acclimate on their own time schedule. You can't force it on them. Hopefully it will happen sooner than later. Sometimes they will just enter into a non-aggression pact and keep to the agreed territory.

29 It is my priviledge to care for the big baby next door while Mom and Dad are out of town at a wedding. C. is a golding something - weighs about 120#s and had his ACL and a hip repaired on Thursday. He is still loopy as all get out so I have to help him get outside to pee. His owners put some fashion of harness on him to help me lift him and give him a hand, or leg as the case may be. But it is all I can do to help him outside and then get him back into the house.

He's looking at me like - "Help me Mr. TP - they shaved my ass and my leg, gave me some epic happy juice, and now I can barely stand up."

He's a good boy!!

30 Our three "regular" dogs (not the little blind Chihuahua) have been a little distracting today. The progeny of the pit bull next door have been visiting for treats (four of her progeny, anyway). A lively bunch. Much less intimidating since I taught them to "Sit".

Our dogs think they are supposed to protect us from the neighbor dogs. If I drag the biggest one away from the door, the other two will retreat to the office.

Daisy's Diary 2/2

Daisy has been cut loose (by intent or by her orneriness) several times lately. She runs like the wind but so far (when not influenced by SonM's dog like the chicken incident weeks ago) she stays in her "walkies" perimiter. She got out today while the neighbor was moving hay rolls with the tractor. Fortunately, Daisy the Dumb did not get herself run over chasing the tractor.

SonM came by with his big Malamute, Jarl ("Yarl" - rhymes with Carl). Jarl was staked out, to prevent another chicken incident, and the two dogs wrestled and played a bunch. Then, at one point, Jarl tried mounting Daisy - SonM said that was a behavior he picked up at the Dog Park. Beware public schools!

I do have, finally, some good pix of Daisy, and Jarl, to send in.

Yes there was. Midnight would come and go as he pleased we always kept the patio door open when the weather was tolerable and that was he ultimate undoing. He wasn't too familiar with roads and cars. This was incredibly annoying so after many threats (which The Cat knows I won't do, like, 'I'm gonna turn you into a banjo drum!') I threw her out and closed the door.
Then she found ANOTHER ping pong ball and bounced that against the closed door, which was even worse. Running out she was not to be found.
I made The Cat wait until I went to work for wet food, but man, that was, like, really.
Who's going to crack first.

71 We have Molly a rottweiler mix that goes nuts over raw carrots, we have never had another dog that will touch them. When I am cutting carrots to put in a roast or stew she is right there demanding her fair share and she will devour every piece that I give her.

My beagles loved carrots. And lettuce. Anytime I made a salad they were all up in my business.

72 Love the pic Maizie on the boat. My son brought his GSP to lake couple of times this summer. She loved the boat but the water not so much.

73 Other threats I don't mean, to The Cat:
-I'll feed you to the coyotes
-I'll make you into a pair of slippers
-I'll sell you to Gypsies

I sometimes tell Paisley I'll trade her in for a cat.

So how was this a threat? Wouldn't a cat love a bird sanctuary - think opportunities!

75 Question: what is a COVID dog?
Posted by: gourmand du jour, isolation completed at September 17, 2022 05:08 PM (jTmQV)

I think people who started working from home thought it would be an awesome idea to get a dog to keep them company, not thinking about how much work dogs are.

This was said to my bird. And it was at his place I saw a Thick Billed parrot (native to America) standing on a cat's head, both eating crunchies from the same bowl.

83 MadisonTheCat likes grass. Saint Augustine. Sge gets a couple blades at a time. When she gears me come in door she runs up straight tail up happy cat, and looks at my hands, no grass she walks away tail whipping side to side, ambivalent cat.

87 My late sister's Chihuahua Rizzo is still kickin' at 11. She has outlived my brother in law's Chihuahua-Pom mixes (Fred and Red). All of them were goofy dogs, but very well behaved, and seldom yapped. Now Rizzo just has three huge cats for friends. And BiL of course.

A nephew has a chihuahua as well, named Jiffy. He likes me. Sits on my lap when I visit. Again, very chill, very well behaved.

89 Pug, I also love chihuahuas. Lots of people hate them for some reason. I think they are adorable. We've had a few at Shep's and they were just sweet as can be.

91 Never liked Chihuahuas, my great uncle raised them and had a kennel. Always seemed they were afraid of me even as a young kid.

94 Hey, all,

I'm using a PC laptop for now. The cord to the MacBook that I mentioned was not charging? Good reason for it: Stirling chewed the cord part way down so that it's ruined! It had to be him; he's the only cat here, and the cord was working this morning. I'm going to have to buy a new cord and then keep it and the laptop away from him.

95 JT yes I did see it, I think it's neat to see. Very bright too, best close to sunrise or sunset and as high up.

96 I've watched my neighbors come and go for over ten years now, and they all have pets, dogs mostly, in nine surrounding homes. I have never seen one of them play with their dog in the yard or take their dog for a walk. They all bark non-stop and seem miserable. Terrible situation.

97 KT, glad to know you got 'em. My protonmail account sometimes behaves strangely with certain IPs. Dagny's breeder never got a lot of my emails from that account; it was not until I used my work email that she responded.

98 Longtime lurker, seldom comment but must say what a great mental health service the Pet Thread always is! Love all your critters and their stories and sad when some have crossed the bridge. Our Coton Henry who has appeared here a couple of times is 4 now. During the recent 'demic we often had items delivered - the delivery person texts when here. Now he runs to the front window and barks when he hears my phone's text sound. Also he has learned that we don't go out for morning walkies until Mom's had coffee (he is not desperate to, don't worry). He sighs, lies down, and waits... such a good dog

Kay at 98, yes the Pet Thread is the best!
Love to all the living pets and their Moron friends. Comfort to those mourning. We don’t know what the “new Heaven and new earth” will encompass. Keeping hope for all critters great and small.
