Top Story

  • So I took a little time to play with Midjourney, one of the new AI-powered art sites. I've been critical of AI often enough; it has little of practical use to show for decades of research apart from being able to destroy the last vestiges of privacy in an increasingly totalitarian world.

But this... This is pretty neat.

You just describe what you want to see, and the art style you want it drawn in - from anime to Boris Vallejo to photorealism - and it does it.

  • Well, most of the time there are little details that aren't quite right - it's not great at bilateral symmetry, and fairly often the results are on the wrong side of the Uncanny Valley, and while it's good on faces and clothes, including things like uniforms and armour:

It has a very shaky grasp of the concept of holding something.

It does well on landscapes and cities though:

You can get a free trial but if you get interested you'll burn through the allowance very quickly. Monthly plans start at $10, or $30 for unlimited use. If you need a lot of illustrations for something but you don't need a particular scene or action precisely, it's an amazing tool.

Just be prepared to occasionally see things that can't be unseen, like when it simply forgets to give someone a face.

If you try to put two characters in a scene, it tends to lose its marbles. I can see why artists are upset, but they're certainly not out of a job yet.

I also wondered if it's possible to get to images of recognisably the same character, given the amount of randomness involved. And I'll just say for now, yes. It takes patience, but if your prompt is specific enough, it's not that hard.

Tech News

  • QNAP. (Bleeping Computer)

    Again.

  • Email is broken. (Carlos Fenollosa)

Broken deliberately by Big Tech, so that only emails sent by (or if you're luck, via) Big Tech can reach email servers operated by Big Tech.

You can receive email on your own server just fine, but sending it is another matter entirely.

  • Cheating at chess using computer shoes. (Incoherency)

It seems like a rather roundabout approach, but if it gets results, who's to complain? I mean, the International Chess Federation, yes, but who listens to those nerds?

14 Morning, all!

I have a work reception to go to this evening. So I've arisen early, will work out and so forth, go back for a nap late this morning, and drift in to work about 1:00. Still it'll be a long day.

Dagny the new kitten is still not eating enthusiastically. And her inner eyelids are not retracting completely as of this morning, which I know means a cat is probably sick in some way. She'll have to go to the shop very soon. (Darn purebreds. It just confirms what I've said about Siberians, that they tend to be sickly or prickly.) Or, and I hate to say this, but maybe Vicki the breeder will take her back and refund my money. She's offered, if I'm disappointed.

Although the wiki saying Caravaggio also used the same technique seems... odd. Late 1500s seems hard to do something similar.

48 A version of the shoe messaging system has been employed in the past to communicate the card count from the low betting counter to the high betting 'shark', both at the same blackjack table.

This in part is why casinos have max increases in bets of 4x over your baseline bet, and also why they prevent new players from entering the game mid-shoe.

He was mayor in the first half of the '70s, and presided over the building of the Superdome -- and opened the door to even more Dem corruption and incompetence. He was the last white mayor until his son Mitch got the job in 2010 or so.

My father used to play tennis with him in the early '70s. I asked if he could get Moon to give me a summer job in the office. No dice, as in "Dad knew he didn't have enough pull to do that."

74 Hi, Bruce

Thanks for letting me know that the reading and the wedding service went w ell. I am sorry about the troublesome teens. On a related note, I really don't understand people who just come to wedding receptions. I had a friend who was a pastor (Sadly, he died in his early 40's) but he said when he was going to get married there were some people he knew who said, "I won't be at the wedding, but I'll come to the reception." (It was not because they were performing some important service to humanity. They were just not church people.) His response was, "Please don't come at all then." He figured people ought to be able to show up to a church on one of the most important days of his life.

75 And the new super conservative Prime Minister in the UK is off to a great start. Her first order of business is price fixing.

— along with green levy cut this will freeze average bills at current level
— costs ~£130bn over 18 months

That'll fix everything. Morning.

I don't think that's the intent. I think if you're in a profession that realizes the value of images to drive interest - like a blog, newsletter, newspaper - and you don't want to pay the price of a 'stock image' entity, then this is a cool tool.

I could see that some people might create some dramatic image in the style of their favorite artist, have it reproduced on canvas, framed and hang it on a wall.

I've had to miss the wedding a few times due to having to work that day. I usually try to make it.

This whole thing was in a old church that has been converted to a WEDDING VENUE. The marriage is performed in the church. Then they convert it into a reception hall.

It was okay. The acoustics are terrible for this type of thing though.
Plus many of the people before and during the ceremony were treating the whole thing like a school play in the cafe-gymatorium at their local grade school.

101 The reception had a DJ. The acoustics in the church (built in the early 1900's) were probably designed or modeled after similar churches. So a priest/pastor could speak without electronics. Without the pews, carpet, kneelers, etc. the sound just careened around the room and you couldn't really understand the music played.

The DJ then decided turning the volume to 11 would help.

107 Got the two car garage emptied, and rearranged in order to be able to fit Mrs Via's Mustang inside, as well as her Miata.

The key to the whole thing is the Harbor Freight self jacking vehicle dollies that were on sale this weekend for 33% off. They allow me to pull the Mustang in, put it on the dollies, and then just push it sideways up against the one side wall for maximum clearance.

Then finally being able to mow the two neighbor's yards, as well as ours after the solid week of rain every day. Almost three 30 gallon bags of grass clippings from the non-self propelled push mower.

A one-bedroom apartment is now averaging $3,017 - meaning even the highest-paid teachers on $111,410 could not afford the rent.

Next they will want people to put up fast food workers who can't afford an apartment on $22 an hour. I guess that's ok, as long as you stipulate that tenants must take a shift on the bicycle powered generator when the power goes out.

178 Terrible story...and reminder that no matter how rich you are and how nice an area you live, you have to be safe when exercising outside. Situational awareness and light (running in the dark solo?) are your friends.

A white woman running alone anywhere in Memphis is not a good idea.

My thought exactly, she was running at 4:30 am, a slim woman, w/ no defensive training, no pepper spray or the like? Heck pepper spray might have saved her life.

Not her fault tho that some sicko killed her, he apparently wasn't rehabbed after 20 some yrs in prison.

180 172 You have to be some kind of evil retard to spend 2 decades behind bars, only to turnaround and commit heinous crimes again.
_________

Especially the same crime, after having been caught at it before.

One would think that after having been such a failure at kidnapping before, he'd have branched out into some different crime he might have had more success with.

184 Don't white women have some sort of force field to protect themselves because they have the right virtues? Maybe this woman had some subconscious MAGA thoughts so she probably had it coming.

190 On a lighter note, Duchess Narcissism gave a speech yesterday, supposedly on gender inequality (her being such a well-known expert on the topic), and the audience was surprised to hear that the speech was all about Duchess Narcissism, with 54 self-congratulatory references to herself and her own life in the 7-minute speech. "It was like she didn't even know what she was talking about" said one event organizer. LOL.

A non-entity marries a rich and famous man and suddenly the non-entity is an "expert" in all things, and idiot companies like Netflix are throwing $100 million contracts at her to get her deep, profound wisdom.

194 > Email is broken. (Carlos Fenollosa)

I've run my own email server for about as long as the OP's author. At first, it was on a server built of cast-off parts on my home cable-modem connection, but for about the past 15 years it's been hosted by a succession of VPS providers on two different continents. (FWIW, it's currently at Linode.) The only mail-delivery problems I have had in all that time were when Microsoft started using UCEProtect's overly-aggressive blocklist (a blocklist that nobody should use, as UCEProtect is run by extortionists). A couple days' back-and-forth between Microsoft and Linode got that addressed to my satisfaction.
