California, Energy and Gavin Newsom

Babylon Bee:

Newsom Promises There Will Be Enough Electricity For All Californians After Everyone Moves To Florida

Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a power grid emergency due to energy usage being at a 5-year high. Still, Newsom has assured everyone that they will have plenty of electricity to spare as soon as everyone leaves the state to live in Florida instead.

"Everyone, I understand your frustration, but by the end of the year with everyone leaving California, we're gonna cut our energy usage in half!" explained Governor Newsom. "In fact, so many are headed for Florida that the few of us who remain will be able to do cool stuff like use air conditioning and charge iPhones!"

But he had just been campaigning in Florida!

*

Gavin Newsom REALLY wants to be president. Back at the end of August, Joel Kotkin warned conservatives not to dismiss the potential national appeal of this guy, because he is willing to change his positions to fit any political occasion.

Conservatives often see prospective presidential contender Gavin Newsom as a tool of the far Left--and, as such, politically doomed by the seemingly endless crises afflicting California. Yet the Golden State governor is a more formidable candidate than this portrayal suggests. Rather than being a progressive windup doll, the 54-year-old is in fact a skilled political opportunist, with far less dogmatically left-wing views than most of his party's legislative delegation. He would have no qualms abandoning unpopular progressive stances to pursue the goal of succeeding a doddering President Joe Biden.

In just the last week, Newsom provided two indicators of his flexibility. He vetoed a bill that would have legalized "shooting alleys"--so-called safe drug-injection sites--in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Oakland. Many of his progressive allies, who favor such programs, denounced the veto. They may be untroubled by rising street crime and drug overdoses, but Newsom knows that disorder in California's major cities offers a devastating talking point for his opponents--especially those to his right.

Even more striking was Newsom's recent turnaround on California's last nuclear plant, and even its gas plants. The green constituency in California detests both forms of energy production and even seeks to ban gas stations, gas heaters, and anything else tainted by fossil fuels. California's green policies have helped make its energy prices among the nation's highest and have created conditions likely to cause massive energy shortages on the power grid. Large-scale blackouts and brownouts could also become fodder for anti-Newsom political ads in 2024.

Newsom's recent moves on public safety and energy have outraged California progressives, particularly the powerful green lobby, which denounced his energy move as "incredibly dangerous." (California's greenhouse-gas emissions are statistically meaningless next to those of China, which emits more carbon than all other industrial countries combined.) Newsom knows that green pronunciamentos about the distant future--for example, the recently announced ban on the sale of new gas cars after 2035, and the goal (set in 2018 by his predecessor) of relying on a zero-carbon electric grid in 2045--make better politics than trying to shut down an economy that still depends on fossil fuels today. Newsom spokesman Anthony York suggested that the alternative policies proposed by greens "feels like fantasy and fairy dust."

Yet none of Newsom's recent moves should be surprising. He is, after all, not the product of the radical social-justice crowd but the anointed candidate of the Bay Area's uber class. . .

Speaking of changing positions:

*

But some things stay the same:

Queen Elizabeth

I liked this piece by Brendan O'Neill:

I am a republican, always have been, and yet I now feel a great sense of loss. And not only because a 96-year-old mother, grandmother and great-grandmother has died, which is always an occasion for sadness, whether the deceased was a monarch or an 'ordinary' member of the public. No, also because Elizabeth II represented something incredibly important. She embodied values that are at risk of extinction. She represented history in an era of anti-historical hysteria, forbearance in a time of narcissism, and public service in an era of self-worship and self-regard.

That was the great irony of Elizabeth II: she was the pinnacle of the establishment and yet she bristled, with every fibre of her being, against the values of the new establishment. She was accidentally countercultural, a traditionalist rebel, and I, for one, loved her for it.

This is the end of an era in so many ways. . .

Several interesting and specific examples are included. This is one of them:

I will remember her for representing a connection with the past when we were so often instructed to feel ashamed of the past. For being the personification of history in a time of frenzy, when statues were being torn down, and buildings were being renamed, and shade was being cast upon virtually every era of Britain's past.

In the midst of this turn against history, the Queen provided people with a connection to yesteryear. She was history made flesh, a quiet one-woman revolt against the idea that the past was entirely terrible and that we must sever all links with it.

In contrast to the piece above, there's this:

Quotes

Mark Hemingway:

Regarding the BYU incident, there's no getting around the fact that huge swaths of the media have completely abandoned all reasonable standards.

And these news orgs are going to eagerly keep smearing people until they're aggressively made to pay for it.

*

Richard Fernandez:

Almost none of the crazy people or movements I knew got better. All you could do is survive them so you wouldn't get caught in the wreck. I think its like that with decadence.

Run.

*

James Lileks:

On hold with a multi-billion dollar financial institution whose hold music is apparently piped through a Mattel Speak-and-Spell with dying batteries. Also, they cannot afford more than 12 bars of music

*

James Lileks again:

Watching childhood fave "Fantastic Voyage," in which a USSR defector has a brain clot, and the natural reaction is not "Walter Reed Hospital, and step on it" but "drive to the secret place where we will inject a bacterium-sized Raquel Welch into his vein"

That's part of the whole issue. For a little local run-around vehicle, EVs are great. For commuters or hauling, they're not.

—-

Even the super cheap EVs give you at least 100 miles per charge. Average is more like 200 and top end is 300 and more. For 90% of commuters Thad is more than enough to go to work and come back home.

Not sure what universe you live in where everyone is commuting hundreds of miles a day. Do some people? Sure there is always an edge case somewhere. But for a typical 9-5 M-F employee there is no range issue for commuting.

That might work with those vehicles like Rivian and electric F150 which have an onboard inverter, but it wouldn't with most EV's currently being sold.

At the very least, you'd need an inverter incorporated into the charging station.

Probably, but I won't because I'm only putting gas in the car once a month as it is, and I do occasionally like road trips where I can get from jersey to texas in 24 hours, or florida in 15. An EV would be an expensive part time toy that would pretty much accomplish nothing for me. Bottom line, I am not giving up my ability to drive til *I* don't feel like driving anymore, and not the car telling me.

Trump won by a whisker in 2016, he lost by almost the same-sized whisker (with extremely dubious circumstances leading to very reasonable doubts about the actual electoral outcome) in 2020. 212 Russia's going to use nukes because they have to draw back over the Oskol river, and give up Izyum? Right.

How many months are we at since the Russian MoD spokesman, in a fairly striking and dramatic statement tacked on to his daily statement, said that continued attacks on Russian territory from the Uke side would be met with Russian responses directed "at the center of decision making" (= Kiev leadership)? On a daily basis, Russians voice frustration and anger that such retaliation never comes, even as attacks on Russian soil continue, intermittently. Doesn't matter, Kremlin has its reasons to not do so and is behaving accordingly.

Talk is very cheap. Towards the start the Kremlin dramatically announced some increased alert in its nuclear forces (it actually wouldn't have been of any consequence, and it didn't even happen, according to US intel which monitors status of those forces, duh).

252 Ukes are having some success in an area south of Kharkov, where the Russians had minimal forces (and even those were para-military at best, military police from Lugansk or Donetsk, not actual Russian military). Simplifying, max success for Uke side would be forcing Russians to pull back from Izyum, an important place south of Kharkov. Doubtful they have resources to exploit beyond that.

Meanwhile southern Uke offensive seems to have sputtered, at high cost.

"Winning" here is likely not a simple formula. All sorts of scenarios could be deemed a Russian victory, or partial victory. Not so clear what this might mean on the Uke side. At a minimum it seems Kiev will have to accept loss of the two eastern oblasts (de facto situation for 8 years already), and of course Crimea. Russia's not giving those up, no matter who's in the Kremlin.

I have always maintained that the final outcome of this will be much the same as WW1; *everyone* loses, and loses badly. The area they are fighting over, Donbas and Luhansk and eastern Ukraine, is going to end up mostly uninhabited, and uninhabitable, for the next century or so. Everyone involved is fighting for nothing other than to see their enemy destroyed at the cost of their own lives.

We're not going to lose lives directly, but our civilization and culture is already collapsing, and this only accelerates it.

It's questionable how much even this break can be exploited by the Uke side, there's no likelihood that most of the "front" meaning all the various sectors are at risk of Russian/allied collapse.

291 There is no significant change on any sector of that front apart from that near Izyum (which was taken not that long ago).

It's questionable how much even this break can be exploited by the Uke side, there's no likelihood that most of the "front" meaning all the various sectors are at risk of Russian/allied collapse.

Possibly, but what has to be giving Putin nightmares is that they knew this was coming and they still couldn't stop it. That doesn't bode well for future operations.

Tac nukes are signaling mechanisms.

Ukraine was a piggy bank and a means of laundering money for western bureaucrats. At the same time, NATO had become a sort of ponzi scheme, where expansion eastward allowed older members (UK, Germany, etc) to shift military spending into social programs and green energy scams on the backs of newer members. No one ever expected to actually have to support large-scale combat operations. The result was that the managerial class managed to continually push and push and push until Russia began pushing back. This isn't to justify the invasion of Ukraine, merely explain why it happened.

Once it was clear that the Russians were going to invade, the expectation was still that the war would be quick. In such a case, it costs little to make promises to support Ukraine, because a war that's over in days is over before you ever have to provide any actual support. Instead, Zelensky didn't flee Kiev, the gov didn't collapse, and the war has dragged on...

It has been the center of corruption for a long time, and the war is only ensures more money is pumped through there: https://tinyurl.com/22vpxzc8

Eighty billion in aid from the U.S. government would certainly be a big number to hit, but it represents only one slice of a much larger pie.

The Devex Funding Platform tracks more than 850 sources of information on the largest funders worldwide, from national governments to multilateral agencies and major philanthropic foundations. Between February 24 and August 16, it recorded more than $100 billion in commitments for Ukraine, with the U.S. as a leading funder. Notably, Devex reported that Ukraine is receiving “considerably higher commitments than crises of similar magnitude around the world.” For example, in June, “an analysis by the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs found that humanitarian assistance was far better funded in Ukraine than in Syria, Yemen, and Afghanistan.”

Trump got impeached, twice, for being outside the DC club. He wanted nothing to do with their decades of failed foreign policy and corruption from both sides of the aisle including taking down duly elected governments we didn't like in Ukraine. Personally, I'm in favor of the latter. The best thing for the west, in the long run, is a war that drags out before ending with some sort of negotiated peace. I think that the longer this goes on, the more the old post-Cold War order is stripped away, and that's a good thing.

Because it's not 1995. They can't go in hard.

Those "20,000 tanks"? Mostly bullshit, and most of what they do have and have been able to stuff into theater has been barely maintained since the 90's. Moscow let the corrupt officer corps hollow out the military much worse than anything that happened during the USSR.

~14-16k of those 20k are parked in rows, rusting. There is a good chance they've lost a majority of their servicable post-T62 tank hulls. Combat ready (as in, *right now*) tactical aircraft may now number in the double digits. This is a monumental overreach on their part.

What the Irish fought over. First with the Brits, and then amongst themselves.

Bingo. People need to pay attention to the electoral college and the makeup of states that are controlled by Democrats and Republicans. Go back and look at the 2020 election and check the states won by Biden. Now determine which states have the chance to switch from Blue to Red. Then determine if that gives the Republican candidate enough to win.

WI, MN, MI and PA are staying Blue. That leaves AZ and GA to possibly switch back to Red. I do not think that is enough to win the electoral college. I think the Republican candidate needs WI or MN or both (along with AZ and GA) to win the electoral college. And from what I have read, AZ and GA are not guarantees to turn Red again.

The Russian mainstream talkshow circuit is figuring out the scale of the fuckup and alternating between accusing military leaders of "treason", demanding the shelling of civilians, and demanding the use of nuclear weapons.

441 Here's a good explanation for waht the Irish think of the British monarchy:

Others shared excerpts of a column last year by Patrick Freyne in the Irish Times, on the struggle between Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, and the rest of the royal family. Freyne argued that the monarchy was an archaic institution with no future.

“Having a monarchy next door is a little like having a neighbour who’s really into clowns and has daubed their house with clown murals, displays clown dolls in each window and has an insatiable desire to hear about and discuss clown-related news stories,” Freyne wrote in March 2021. “More specifically, for the Irish, it’s like having a neighbour who’s really into clowns and, also, your grandfather was murdered by a clown.”

I sometimes chaff at this... sure, the rigid definition of "democracy" is essentially rule by direct plebiscite. That has, for all intents and purposes, never existed. Maybe some oddball city-state here or there, but never in a significant world power. The word "democracy" in modern english is used as a short-hand for any form of governance by elected officials, where the people as a whole at least nominally decide en masse, in some way or another, what the Rules will be. Not Absolutism. Not Totalitarian Collectivism. Democracy.

Yes, that was a western-leftist backed coup, and yes it contributed to this. If the Russians had simply been more subtle - AND if the west hadn't fucked around - they could have just waiting things out. But the Russians are incompetent blowhards and the Western establishment is more than happy to get other people killed and cause economic ruin.

What has happened is both the West and to some extent China goading Russia into doing something monumentally stupid to further their own ends.

None of that inclines me not to root for the Ukrainians to kick the Russians out, presuming they're smart enough to stop at the border (as they should be).

469 Messages have emerged purportedly by military servicemen complaining the U.S. government is taking critical equipment directly from American troops and sending it to Ukraine without a plan to replenish it. Some claims are harder to verify than others...

This year, the Marines have shipped at least 108, nearly a quarter, of its systems to Ukraine. But they can be replaced easily, right? Well, no. The world’s largest manufacturer of titanium, a critical component in the M777, is Russia’s VSMPO-Avisma. Just last year, VSMPO-Avisma signed an agreement with Boeing to be the company’s largest titanium supplier for current and future commercial aircraft. Now sanctions and embargoes on Russia will make it much harder for the West to replenish what it expends on Ukraine.

I commented on this several days ago; it's going to sever the Russian use of certain rail lines, put others (and roads) in range of shelling backed by drone observation, and, if they can hold deep enough, allow them to cut off water to Crimea again.

Democracy is collectivism, even if it is limited franchise or only on representatives. Why should people in Portland have any say in any way over whether someone in Eagle Creek in Jackson County have specific licensing requirements for a pond to collect rain water?
"We voted on it"
On top of which, elected representatives make a perverse situation where the voters don't have direct responsibility for the bad results of their choice, the representatives have a diffuse responsibility because "it is my public that chose this and not I", and in worst case they can fob it off on an agency that has rule makers that then can claim they were acting "on the choice of the electorate" when in fact, no actual choice was made.

I have a proposed solution though.

There are no good guys in this war.

You're missing my point. America enters and leaves these things at will, because we can. When we make those decisions, it has very little to do with dead people piling up in the streets and very much to do with high-minded idealistic campaign slogans that poll well with voters this week. Our civilians and press go bonkers when some captured POWs get squirted with water hoses, and they call it a crushing defeat if we take a couple dozen casualties in one battle. Those battlefields are all thousands of miles away from the USA, separated by one or more oceans, so there was never even a little bit of risk that if the front collapses the other guys will cross the border, burn our cities, slaughter the men, rape the women, and smash babies on local monuments.

Compare that with, say, what regularly goes down in the Balkans.

483 39%, which I doubt, is not most voters. The only way Newsom wins is cheating.

Posted by: JackStraw at September 10, 2022 11:46 AM

Yep. And the irony is that the electoral college can guarantee the Democrats win. Because to win the Presidency, a candidate does not need a majority of voters across the country. A candidate only needs a majority of voters in enough states whose electoral votes add up to the majority of electoral votes.

Trump won in 2016 by that strategy. He flipped MI by 11,000 votes, flipped PA by 44,000 votes, flipped WI by I think 20,000 votes. All 1% or less margins. Those 3 key long-time Blue states going to Trump by the slimmest of margins is all Trump needed to win. The Democrats can employ the same strategy to keep their blue/purple states and maintain their electoral college advantage even with low overall nationwide support.

25% to Germany, for its attempt to EU-ify Ukraine which set all of the other things in motion
20% to corrupt Western power elite, who've been using Ukraine as a grift and graft theme park ever since the USSR broke up
20% to Russia, for being ultranationalistic asshoe
15% to the media and China, for egging everyone else on for fun and profit
10% to Herr Doctor Faucistein and the public health cabal, for catalyzing this and many wars to follow
10% to the public at large for going along with decades of irresponsible leadership

500 @57 ... a mobile society is difficult to subjugate.

Soon, new cars will have kill switches in them, so the government can immobilize your car whenever it wants.

Tampering with the kill switch will be a felony.
__________

Cars - new or not - already have 'kill switches' in them ... they're called 'OnStar' or whatever new naming protocol GM and the others decided to call it.

Think it's not a 'kill switch'? Remember when 'OnStar' was first introduced, its big selling point was that, in the event your car was stolen, the Po-Po could call and ask OnStar to kill the motor on that car. Ergo, by extension ... you know the drill.

FFS... is there not one freaking person involved in American politics who knows that the USA is a republic, not a democracy?

She should be saying "our republic is in grave danger".

I guess this is what happens when we stop saying the Pledge of Allegiance in school every morning? "...and to the Republic, for which it stands..."

Posted by: Clyde Shelton at September 10, 2022 03:06 PM (Do5/p)

502 "republican" to a Brit means "wanting to abolish the monarchy and establish a republic". It was his way of saying "Hey, I'm as far as you can get from being a supporter of the Queen as a Monarch, but even I...." etc etc I think he was expressing exactly what you are: It isn't about politics.
