The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Sanctions can be effective in some circumstances, and they can be a powerful geopolitical tool. But sanctioning a product that is fungible and ubiquitous is merely a public relations effort and can have very little influence on reality. Oil is the perfect example, and we need to look no farther than China for a state actor that is perfectly willing to purchase sanctioned oil, and there is nothing anyone can do about it.

Russian oil sales roaring despite sanctions

"Russia is swimming in cash," Elina Ribakova, deputy chief economist at the Institute of International Finance, told The Wall Street Journal.

Ribakova said Russia has made about $97 billion from oil and gas sales this year with $74 billion coming from crude oil sales.

Before invading Ukraine in February, Russia supplied 40% of Europe's gas. After the start of the war, Russia President Vladimir Putin throttled the Nord Stream gas pipeline to Germany and other European nations, raising energy prices around the world.

So Putin and his oligarchs are cutting supply, which raises prices and decreases the maintenance demands on their oil and gas fields. And let's face it, there are thousands of oil and gas fields around the world, so if Russia really needs equipment they can always buy from countries that are not part of the 1st world sanctions. Sure, there is high-tech oil extraction, and Russia will be limited to lower tech stuff available in the third world, but with oil at $100/barrel, they don't need to push production nearly as hard as when President Trump drove oil down into the $40 range.

But this is the best part!

However, the situation could change once European Union embargo on Russian crude and product imports comes into full effect, resulting in at least 1 million barrels daily having to go elsewhere.
Europe is already freaking out over the decrease in gas shipments through the monopoly pipeline that they accepted, so the idea that they are going to stop buying Russian oil and go to other sources is adorably naive. Although if the lights are out and there is frost on the inside of windows all across Europe this winter, I would be hard pressed to restrain a hearty chuckle.

There is a delicious bit of irony built into this ridiculous situation though...Israel will be selling gas to Europe! You know...apartheid, racist, Zionist, Jew-filled Israel...the worst country on earth according to the bien pensents in Paris and Rome and London.

{472} All this discussion of roundabouts/traffic circles isn't taking into account there are two different kinds: those where the vehicles entering the circle have the right of way, and those where the vehicles in the circle have the right of way. All the most recently constructed in my area are the latter.

53 It was valuable for at risk people, such as diabetics.
==
Such people could get protection from Covid infection for about 6 months, but also be exposed to other risks from MRNA shot. Subsequent shots you get another 3 months protection, then 3 to 4 weeks, then to nil as covid protection. But you still get the short term and long term risks of MRNA injections on each subsequent shot.

So all in all, not a great deal, unless you are 88 -90+ and the next six months is more important likely to be real to you, than the next 3 years. Or you are in a very high risk group and getting covid for you would be a likely trip to the ICU. Most covid infections did not do that, although sure as shit a lot of people were affected that way. I can see someone at risk making the decision to get a shot or even two. But after that, you are adding risk with a drastically reduced "benefit".

The new shot has two spike proteins, the old one, and the new one, supposedly delta variant shaped. If you have gotten sick already with the vid, why would you need that?

And, our electric bills here in Kentucky have jumped by about 35% over last year at this time.

Propane is up too. Our tank which is used for heating purposes only took about $312 to top off. I can only imagine what's going to happen in Europe this winter.

It's a guy in the 70s saying, "F all this city life" and moving to the country.

One article is house plans. 3 floorplans. Each a 2 bed, one bath around 700 square feet. $1,000 down, $6k FHA mortgage at $43/ month for 20 years. ($43k at $330/mo in 2022 dollars)

That was normal then. You'd be labeled insane for a house that small today (to say nothing about it's unavailable). Look what else they stole from us. Inflation, single-income families, affordable mortgages, etc.

172 I'm really wondering if we are heading to an 1848-style revolutionary situation in Europe.

First the expert class gave the Europeans COVID lockdowns, and now the expert class is going to give Europe its worst winter since World War Two.

First, Germany and some other counties decide to become extremely dependent on Russian oil and gas (in Germany's case so they could shut down coal and nuclear plants).

Vladmir Vladmirovich Putin is not a subtle guy, but it apparently escaped the Germans that there was a huge political risk being so dependent on Russia. Trump tried to warn them, and they laughed.

There was apparently no contingency plan for what Europe would do if Russia cut the gas off, and then Europe gleefully announced draconian economic sanctions when the Russians invaded, in the belief that the Russian people would suffer so much that they would overthrow Putin. It never occurred to the "experts" to consider what Russia would do in response.

Ukraine Cuts Off Russian Natural Gas Pipeline Supplying Europe, VOA News, May 11, 2022, In part:

"About one-third of Russian gas headed to western Europe passes through Ukraine, although one analyst said the immediate effect might be limited since much of it can be redirected through another pipeline. Russia's giant state-owned Gazprom said gas flowing to Europe through Ukraine was down 25% from the day before.

The European Union, as part of its announced effort to punish Russia for its 11-week invasion of Ukraine, is looking to end its considerable reliance on Russian energy to heat homes and fuel industries."

Most people are missing something huge here;

This doesn't "reduce maintenance". It means maintenance *isn't being done*.

A bunch of stuff out on/in the permafrost is fucked, because either the western companies running it GTFO'ed, or the Russians themselves can't keep running it because there is nowhere for the output to go. There is a point after which the wells are ruined, and a bunch of the structures and equipment aren't going to make it either.

Similarly, a bunch of the oil platforms are just fucked. Some were deliberately sabotaged on the way out by western workers.

We are going to be feeling the effects of this for a very long time.

294 Forgetting about the Ukraine angle for a moment, the EU was becoming too over dependent on Russian gas and oil. The proof is what you are seeing now. Whether that happened over Ukraine or something else, it was going to happen. Russia is putting the screws on because they know the long game does not benefit them. Norway is already putting more production online and has more planned for the future. There are also other non Russian sources which will be safer for Europe in the end. That's before we get to things like nuclear. The price of gas an oil will eventually come down if we get a person who can speak to complete sentences in the White House. In the meantime the EU will continue developing alternative sources. Then it's the end game for Russia. Dropping prices and a lack of outlets will not be good for them.

304 Europe wanted to import Soviet gas during the Cold War.

The US considered this to be such a threat to the Western Alliance that the CIA blew up the gas pipeline that was going to transport the gas, by letting the Soviets steal deliberately flawed technology.

Thomas Reed, senior US national security official, claims in his book “At The Abyss” that the United States allowed the USSR to steal pipeline control software from a Canadian company. This software included a Trojan Horse that caused a major explosion of the Trans-Siberian gas pipeline in June, 1982. The Trojan ran during a pressure test on the pipeline but doubled the usual pressure, causing the explosion. (#1, #2)

“In order to disrupt the Soviet gas supply, its hard currency earnings from the West, and the internal Russian economy, the pipeline software that was to run the pumps, turbines, and valves was programmed to go haywire, after a decent interval, to reset pump speeds and valve settings to produce pressures far beyond those acceptable to pipeline joints and welds,” Reed writes. But he was never pushing mandates. And was very suspicious of the whole "booster" thing that started to take off as he was leaving office --and I highly doubt he would have backed that. And he was pushing therapeutics which the medical establishment suppressed (to artificially increase demand for the clot shots).

So with all due respect this whole "Trump Vaccine" narrative is really misleading.

323 First here is the "news" you will get about synthetic milk from the environ con artists:

------------
Synthetic milk does not require cows or other animals. It can have the same biochemical make up as animal milk, but is grown using an emerging biotechnology technique know as "precision fermentation" that produces biomass cultured from cells.

There have been increasing calls to move beyond animal-based food systems to more sustainable forms of food production.

Synthetic milks offer dairy milk without concerns such as methane emissions or animal welfare. But it must overcome many challenges and pitfalls to become a fair, sustainable, and viable alternative to animal-based milk.
-------

The "challenges" listed include helping corporations and recreating the same systemic unfairness as come with real milk. (part 2 coming)

The government is no longer responsible for keeping supply lines open & flowing or smart foreign policy, they're only vital goal is to keep the planet from burning in 80 years. And here is the real skinny on this synthetic wonder milk, from an article about how it is made in India:

------------
From the natural milk received from cows and buffaloes, cream, butter and fat are separated from the cream separator machine. To make this milk (left over milk after so sparated from all its nutrients) again creamy and foggy, urea, detergent, caustic soda, starch oil, glucose, shampoo, white paint, hydrogen peroxide etc are mixed to prepare synthetic milk.
----------

Sounds almost as delicious as those amazing fake eggs they are touting to "protect the environment".

Counting all deaths (battle and non-battle):

US Europe: 213407
US Pacific: 162525

US Coast Guard (~1900) deaths and Merchant Marine (~9500) deaths are not included in the above.

Also not enough manpower. England was already seeing real production drops due their mobilization and casualty levels. Marshall was hard and fast on the nine-five division limit to try and avoid the same.

If we cut off Lend-Lease, the Soviet Army becomes more or less static due to a lack of logistics. But even then, I don't know if the Allies had the manpower to carve them up.

Again, I think part of the kink is to do the surgeries and stitching so poorly to TRY and get the mentally ill patients to crack. This is nightmare fuel.

Invest in car dealerships in Nevada and especially Oregon.

No sales tax in Oregon.

Used to be a nice little game. CA law was any vehicle had to be 'registered and available for use' outside California for 60 days, with taxes paid in the other jurisdiction, before it could be brought into CA without being taxed...

Posted by: JEM at August 30, 2022 02:36 PM (8erNz)

448 The /Oregon dodge was routine for Gulfstreams and yachts, they'd be parked and taxed ($0) in Oregon for six months, then the owners would show up and yo-ho-ho.

It even worked for things like BMW European Delivery, we did it twice. Order the car, pay for it, pay the German sales tax on it (which isn't charged to foreigners, silly) then defer picking up the car for an extra month. BMW Euro Deliver 7% off MSRP and fully paid insurance.

Shows up in California, you show up and drive it away, file your DMV paperwork showing when you paid the tax (to Bavaria) and when the car arrived in California, get your plates and burn rubber.

Posted by: JEM at August 30, 2022 02:37 PM (8erNz)

449 California caught on and changed the rules now, I haven't looked but I'm sure there's still loopholes. I think it can't be brought into CA without use tax until it's got 6000 miles on it or something and taxes paid in the other jurisdiction, so you need a longer vacation.

I'm betting one could do a nice job on a cross-country out-and-back Sprinter tour and monetize it on youtube...
