Weekend Hobby, Craft and Bodging Thread

japbookcase.jpg

Greetings all. Time to head for the basement, garage, studio, craft room or wherever else you can to make a mess and get creative. I've managed to strip wallpaper, prime and paint about half of my first floor. My next project is a bookcase such as the one pictured on top using 1" or 3/4" trim stock for the uprights and crossmembers. On my version, the uprights will feature dadoes about 1/4" in for strength as well as aesthetics. The damn movers lost or stole a lot of my tools, but I still have a router, circular saw and a drill as well as some clamps. What projects have you al been working on or contemplating?

First up, if you've been involved in the model railroading hobby for more than a few years, the name Bruce Chubb should be familiar. Bruce is a pioneer of both electronics as well as model railroad operations which are both hallmarks of his famous Sunset Valley RR. He has planned for his massive layout to live on when he's gone as part of a museum as well as facility to promote STEM to young people.

This guy out of Toronto is one of my favorite furniture flippers. He transforms a beat up Facebook Marketplace vanity into two stunning night tables.

I'm a big fan of kitbashing. There's a lot more to it than just slapping random bits onto a shampoo bottle willy-nilly, like most folks do. Unlike this guy, who has a keen eye for form and detail. Watch as he creates a hover car, sort of like cross between a spinner from Blade Runner and the vehicles from The Fifth Element. This is part one of a multi-part series.

Sometimes the simplest things are the most rewarding. Like good old wood carving. Just a few knives (one probably would be enough), some wood and imagination.

All of my paintings are done from photographs, either ones I've taken but a couple found on the internet. There are some problems inherent in doing it that way, as Ian Roberts demonstrates how he works around them.

We've featured folks who restore old beat up toys and objects but what about taking something and making it look weathered and beat up? I think this is kind of cool.

Ho Lee Fook. 10.6 meters is nearly 35 feet. Amazing.

9 Books. Beads. Needlework. Chainmaille supplies. Finished jewelry. It all has to be sorted, boxed, and either moved, sold, or donated. Amazon will make a fortune from me buying tiny containers for beads, jump rings, and findings. I should have done this years ago instead of just tossing little bags into big boxes.

12 I am actually making progress on my 28mm WWII US Marine Bolt Action miniature Army for a tournament in November.

I vowed to paint at least one figure per day and so far I have kept to that schedule, yesterday I did two so I can slack off today. At this pace I should be done a week before the tournament.

25 I have to build another epic set of book cases. That will be my next major project. I'm still bummed I had to leave them behind when I moved. Frigging prices of material today it will probably cost 3K to build them again. It took 6 weeks and $1800 to build the last ones. There was just over 180 miters. I get sick just talking about it. But I'm not doing shit until after this kitchen is finished and I get a long deserved break.

28 Building bookcases and cabinets for my office now. Just finished cutting plywood, taking a break. Normally I'm a hand tool guy, planes, chisels, pull saws, etc. I prefer the quiet and minimal sawdust. But you can pry my 17 inch bandsaw from my cold dead hands.

It's funny, I make stuff where I need to M&T everything by hand, dovetails, etc. Then one day I said - what the hell, I'm buying a pocket hole jig for cases. I'm sold on the pocket holes for doing things I hate to do. And I hate making cases. I like making tables and small things with hand tools. Hate cases and cabinets. Not a strong dislike it's a hate. But the pocket hole jig sure makes it tolerable. I know there are hand tool purists who scoff at this. Long ago I used to be one. But now I say - screw it. LITERALLY! 47 My Kentucky grandmother, who died when I was a kid, made one of those lovely granny square afghans, set off with black crochet, that are now coming back into style. I dragged it all over the place when I was little, and it's always been coming apart because she sewed it together with needle and thread.

So I got some of that Red Heart yarn from Coats and Clark, in black, which I am sure is what she used; it's been around forever. I'm using a single crochet stitch to join the squares, long lines crossways and then longways, so that strong bars outline and hold together the squares. Then I'll wash and block it. I think I'll be happy with its more sturdy look. I hope she would be.

Flames Of War was definitely there, but it was a closed-door tournament affair that didn't seem to want any visitors. Agree that their star is fading.

One of my gripes is that the show organizers didn't do a good job of working with the tournament runners on publicizing what was tournament matches and what was general outreach stuff and demos. Those of us not already in the know were left thinking that it was all private, but it turns out that several of them (notably BT) were also doing demos and open games.

Warlord was a show sponsor and Bolt Action had a pretty big showing.

Damn, those #2's can be pricey. $50 was total steal Forget about a #1, last I saw they were hitting $1500 and I never saw one either. I have #3s up to the #8. I think my oldest is a type 2 or 3 #7, somewhere around 1864 I think. I really don't use anything past type 16. I stick to pre-war planes.

I had the wood background long before building guitars, but I got into building classical guitars because there was no frigging way I was spending 10 grand on a grand concert guitar. especially since I already had 90% of the tools needed.

63 Still building the Trumpeter 1/32 Ju 87B-2. Should be applying decals but distracting myself with an Eduard 1/48 FW 190F-8. I say 'an' FW 190F-8 because I have three of the kits and I keep finding late war schemes for F-8s that show improvisation which would make interesting kits.

Anyway the model builder does not always need to drop $30 or so for after market stuff. Eduard provides plenty of PE bang with their Profi Pack kits but still there are little things that can be added cheaply and simply to add some detail.

FW 190 landing gear have these little springs for gear operation. Naturally this isn't included in the kit. But a bit of very thin copper wire tightly wrapped around a very thin rod will produce the springs to attach, paint, and weather.

Got a bit of over spray from the air brush from free-handing that 190? Do not reach for the blue-tak or Tamiya tape, some of these over sprays can be fixed by simply holding a bit of paper behind the area where the paint is going. Also if you painting along wing edges, always angle the air brush to shoot towards the edge to prevent over spray.

So nyah

Posted by: Ben Had at August 27, 2022 05:53 PM (qdW1I)

65 Historical gaming always attracts a particularly old crowd and I talked to a lot of greybeards while I was there. In doing so, and hearing lots of the usual (and mostly justified) ranting about things Games Workshop has done over the years, I had a revelation about their pricing complaints and why some people are more sensitive to it than others. It's a generational thing! Old people who remember 80s and 90s knew a time when working guy entertainment costs were pretty low. Us millennials and GenZ never knew that, it was all DLCs, MMO subscriptions, microtransactions, and $800 iGadgets that quickly go obsolete.

To wit: oldsters compare GW raising prices every year and occasionally making baseless legal threats to their favorite half-dead homebrew game system and/or going to a baseball game in 1983, and conclude that GW is the antichrist of hobby companies. Youngsters compare GW raising prices every year and occasionally making baseless legal threats to EA, Actiblizz etc. doing far shittier things on a regular basis and conclude that GW is just par for the course.

71 My new cool tool is the Milwaukee m12 pin nailer. I was using a regular old harbor freight $20 pin nailer and it worked frigging great, but I recently retired all my compressor nailers. They stay in the work shop now with the pancake compressor for building stuff there. I don't want to be dragging the compressor all over the house anymore, not to mention dealing with air hoses and hearing the damn thing run every 3 minutes.

Bosch is nice stuff. I like my Bosch stuff. Take the table saw if you can, you'll need it to build nice book shelves. I mean you could get away with the circular saw to cut the sides if you rig up a guide system, basically a straight edge and clamps, but the table saw makes things easy. A good miter saw is the other thing. You can build just about anything with a table saw, miter saw, and router.

That's sad. Back in the day we welcomed everyone and actively encouraged people to come in to watch and learn the game when we were doing tournaments. At historicon a buddy and I ran 8 person learning games for a few of years. We were sold out every year we did it. Battlefront also gave us some serious prize support to pass out after the game. I still have about a dozen different armies for that game that I will most likely never play again.

79 There's also a generational gap in how one approaches wargaming. For older people, deeply rooted in oldschool large scale 15mm/28mm Napoleonic and Civil War game systems, it's all about huge armies on huge boards that take a long time to resolve. Younger gamers have ADHD and we want faster, smaller games so we can get back home in time to troll some fools on the interweb. Newer games like Blood & Plunder and 8th/9th WH40K heavily push variable game size with a dozen or so models per side being common, and explicitly small-scale skirmish games like Infinity are growing in popularity. A common complaint that many people had with Warhammer Fantasy was that you just couldn't do a little bit of it, and this is often cited as a reason that it got ditched in favor of its very skirmish-y successor.

82 I think I mentioned last week that the print quality out of my 3D printer went to complete shit all of a sudden. It's always been rock-solid, and printing above it's class, thanks to lots of mods. And finally I've finally tracked down the problem....the print cooling fan is not spinning up. It's good, and tests just fine, but it's not getting power from the mainboard for some reason.

I replaced all my cooling fans a while ago with silent fans, so when this one failed, there was no audible indication. There you go, a downside to upgrades.

I'm going through the wiring/connectors/mainboard now trying to track down the problem. If the problem is the mainboard, I'll just piggy-back this fan on another...it draws very little current.

In fairness to the FoW crew, I do think the Nashcon event organizers bear a lot more blame than any of the special-interest groups themselves. They all got stuffed in meeting rooms with zero communication to the public beyond that there were tournaments going. Demo guys in the main public area had complaints about last minute changes to where they were located, and a couple of the table runners whose tables I was most interested in didn't even show up. I'm gonna write them an email at some point with constructive criticism about how they could do it better next year. It's a combination of two smaller shows that were only together for a couple of years before covidmania so they're still working out the bugs.

96 3d printing is also hitting the model building world, with Eduard leading the way. Dropped $5 for some 3D printed 1/48 Luftwaffe rudder pedals from them just to get free shipping on a $250 order.

They look nice. But comparing them to the plastic ones in the FW 190 and looking at the cockpit in general; they are truthfully a waste for they will never be seen unless a contest judge inserts a small bore LED light to look at them. Or you do a cutaway model. Same can be said for the PE rudder pedals provided in the Profi Pack.

So save yourself time, a bit of money, and eye strain and don't get them.

106 Hubby and I completed a "project" earlier this month ... There was absolutely no fun involved ... In fact, it was a royal PITA ... What we did was re-assemble a flattened IKEA wardrobe (40-inches wide and 93-inches tall with shelves and a pull-out drawer) ... The pieces and parts (hundreds) sat in our attic a couple years waiting for middle son to retrieve for his new residence -- which he never did and eventually changed his mind about wanting it altogether ... So we decided it might hold ALL the stuff stored on two small plastic shelving units in our garage, freeing up some space.

And thankfully it did (one of only two things "good" I can say about this project) ... The other good thing I can share is that -- despite all the cussing at the time -- hubby and I are finally able to look back on the project and laugh (well, just a little).

Would the mechanism behave like that with a weak battery? I'd think, if it runs *at all*, the battery is enough. Or could the mechanism itself be worn or damaged?

that was the problem at the old house. There was a frigging street lamp right at the end of my driveway. I didn't know how bad it was messing things up until it broke. you take a appx 12 inch piece and lay a appx 6 inch piece on top

Lately it has been running 5 minutes or more slow, and then yesterday it stopped. I put in a slightly used battery, and it runs, but is even slower. Would the mechanism behave like that with a weak battery? I'd think, if it runs *at all*, the battery is enough. Or could the mechanism itself be worn or damaged?

I bought the ARRL's EFHW kit (I think it's 10-40ish) after my wife left me, but I don't really have any good way to hold it up. I've been working on this helically-wound vertical that I'm going to try to use multiband. I think I finally have all the parts, too. The last piece I needed was a 1-inch PVC cap. Instead of buying that, I bought and extra 2-inch cap. That was unfortunate because it's used for the cap hat.

I figure when this HWV doesn't work on the higher bands, I'll check out the EFHW and see if I can't make that work, instead.

Yes, you will only be granted fairness, once you demand it in court... even though its the Judges Job, to try to make things fair, under the Law.

Judge HAD to have known this Raid would be controversial. That there would be blow back to his overly broad order to Raid the Last President in his home.... yet... totally sided with the Feds, including with the redactions of the Subpoena docs themselves.

Jam 6 fishing expedition, and if anything HAD been found? It would have been leaked by now.

But the press is still playing this up like TRUMP is going to get indicted for.... something...

G-d bless Bruce Chubb but wow, how old he looks. That said, I have been reading his articles in Model Railroader since the mid 1970s. And I ain't exactly no oil painting these days either.

Dedication and passion for sure.

When you to out to the fair, don't forget to indulge in some funnel cake.

Jack - even the affidavit refers to documents sought only had "classified markings" - not the usual or standard term of "classified documents" - meaning that they clearly knew that these had been de-classified - whatever markings were on them at that point was irrelevant and they knew it.

Shay hut, I'n't never got that dirty.

Every time I've ever made wide shelves of plywood, even heavy duty material, they've sagged under load. I've found that tacking on a brace or straightener on the edge, even if it's only a fraction deeper than the shelf, takes that right out. You have to do it before the sage starts, though.

The Pope won't be Catholic again until he excommunicates Biden and Pelosi. What the Catholic church needs is a good schism. Every millennium or so.
