The Morning Report — 8/26/22

hochulsolution.jpg

Good morning kids. The weekend is here and so Sponge-Brain Shits-Pants just decreed he was going to rob the treasury (which at this point is empty save trillions in IOUs going back to the New Deal as well as a lint-covered butterscotch once owned by John D. Rockefeller) of $300 billion in student loan debt "forgiveness" to make sure the one voting bloc still joined to the Democrats at the hip, the youth, aren't distracted by fake news like a tanking economy and stagflation and keep them in power come the midterms.

The egregiousness of this on so many levels is off the charts. The most galling thing about it is the reaction of those who are outraged that we, the ones who are going to take it in the shorts as well on top of everyone who worked their asses off for years to pay off their debts as responsible citizens, are expressing our outrage over it. If you want to read stories about the outrage and the counter-outrage-outrage, the links are chock full of them. One in particular stands out, as it also speaks to the much broader issue of the political struggle.

Biden’s handout to educated voters is the most naked form of political patronage you can imagine. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially if you happen to be a Democratic Party strategist. There is no confusion here about who ought to be rewarded and who punished. One will likely have to wait a long time before the Republicans counter with a similar sort of handout to their own putative constituents. Indeed, why not a family week? If the problem with “the libs,” as it were, is that they are all antisocial nihilists who refuse to have children in favor of pursuing hedonistic pleasures, then handing out state benefits to families with children, and making the childless pay for it, seems like a very sound way of rewarding one’s friends and punishing one’s enemies.

At the end of the day, though, the limitations of the right are illuminated fully in a moment of political controversy like this. The problem isn’t that the right is “stupid” while the left is “evil.” The problem is that the right has a contradictory and unworkable coalition, with various interest groups at odds with each other. On the left, by contrast, years of “cancel culture” haven’t just been an obnoxious social affair, but have cleared the deck politically, removing or marginalizing dissident political voices and ensuring that people pursue the same sort of politics. . .

. . . And so the Democrats pile on even more unsustainable debt to give out handouts to a social group that by and large doesn't need it, but that has significant overlap with the kinds of people who become pundits, consultants, and activists on the right. Is it really a mystery that the Democrats succeed in these sorts of battles? What is even the benefit of “winning” them, for the Republican activist class? It’s hard to escape the conclusion that however loudly they denounce this move, Republicans pundits don’t mind losing this battle.

Not just this battle. Every battle. That is who and what they are; a sham opposition that is every bit as responsible for the gradual, and now all at once, dismantling of America since the end of the Second World War. Seen in this light, is it any wonder that Mitch McConnell is now actively working to sabotage a potential GOP flipping of the Senate come the midterms? It's because he'd have to deal with Trump/MAGA-aligned Senators from his party whose mission is to dismantle as much of the grift and graft that has made his jowls Elaine Chao's multi-million dollar sex toy for lo these many years.

The more important story, which Mitch McConnell and most of the GOP have been silent about, is the incitement and actual acts of violence committed against members of his own party as well as constituents over the past several years. When James Hodgkinson opened fire on the GOP softball practice a few years ago, McConnell should have been doing everything to find out what Dick Durbin and Bernie Sanders knew and when they knew it. Instead, crickets and the let's-not-blame-our-colleagues-across-the-aisle-for-a-lone-wolf-nut-job usual bullshit.

Meanwhile, after Marjorie Taylor Green was SWATed twice in two days we have these two stories. Charlie Crist, a laughable failure of a ponce who's delusional enough to actually believe he can defeat Ron DeSantis, did his best to try and win over new voters:

“Those who support [DeSantis] should stay with him and vote for him and I don’t want your vote. If you have that hate in your heart, keep it there. I want the vote of the people of Florida who care about our state, good Democrats, good Independents, good Republicans. Unify with this ticket. Unify with Val Demmings and Charlie Crist. Unify with us. Those who are haters, you’re gonna go off in your own world. And you better get right.”

Way to reach out to people by defining those against you and your party as hate-filled and evil. But wait! There's more! Not to be outdone by Crist, Cuomo-with-a-dessicated-vagina Kathy Hochul (who was his lieutenant governor all throughout his reign and knew he was sexually abusing women and mass murdering the elderly via the General Tso's Sickness) made this declaration:

Gov. Kathy Hochul, who hasn’t proven shy about issuing orders, had one for the state’s Republicans this week — all 5.4 million of them: “Just jump on a bus and head down to Florida where you belong, OK?” she said. “You are not New Yorkers.”

If you can move beyond the frankly disgusting political partisanship and intolerance, her message is fiscally irresponsible, even dangerous. The governor probably already knows this, but the state’s extensive public sector is heavily reliant on personal income taxes paid by residents, and with nearly $14 billion in projected budget gaps over the next five years, it can’t afford to lose any taxpayers, let alone 5.4 million of them. . .

. . . Hochul should worry less about her political opponents and more about what happens to this state as a significant portion of the tax base continues to leave. New Yorkers already know it’s inhospitable here; even before the governor’s latest order, New Yorkers were picking Florida — nearly 45,000 of them moved to the Sunshine State between 2019 and 2020.

What Hochul is saying is "Get out." What is unsaid but directly implied is "Or else." Leave it to the NY Post to focus on the fiscal aspect of New Yorkers fleeing the state, mostly to Ron DeSantis' Florida which Charlie Crist has delusions of turning into New York, and not the near-eliminationist rhetoric spewed by Hochul. Talk like that from politicians kills people. What's worse is the doubling down on the rhetoric and the ramping up of the volume is in direct proportion to the silence coming from the alleged political leadership of the constituents at which it is aimed.

So, if Marjorie Taylor Green, Ron DeSantis or Donald Trump is taken out, they must have had it coming. Right, Mitch?

Have a good weekend.

You know who gets punished the worst by Biden's policies? Not the poor, who can depend on being perpetually bailed out. Not the very rich, or even the upper middle class, who will just shrug their shoulders at higher taxes or energy costs.

No, it's those at the bottom fringes of the middle class. They have a clunker in the driveway, one major repair bill away from financial ruin. The live at the edges of ruin, and the left wants to destroy any dream of 'middle classness'. Remember Obama's preacher who ranted against 'middle classness'? That's not a coincidence.

As rhetoricians, they are woefully deficient. Sure they seem to have mastered using Pathos to advance their arguments, which is a very powerful tool. But they are woefully inept at Logos, as their arguments fall apart with the slightest bit of scrutiny. They also lack Ethos because when they are in power, they are hopelessly incompetent at their jobs. That's one reason why they get kicked out when they can't steal enough votes to keep their jobs.

81 ... On the left, by contrast, years of “cancel culture” haven’t just been an obnoxious social affair, but have cleared the deck politically, removing or marginalizing dissident political voices and ensuring that people pursue the same sort of politics
++++
That's certainly a take, but I think it's wrong - at least about the left. The non-left (I won't even call it the "right" because it isn't, really) is at best a confederation of internally competing interests aligning against a greater demon. This can work short-term, as it's like a war. You don't have to love your ally, but you need to rally behind your common hatred of the enemy. It's *after* the war that you settle your differences.

The left, however, is not monolithic. We see plenty of evidence for this. The ruling complex is riddled with infighting, empire-building and crossed purposes. They are not a unified bloc. They've won insofar as they control all institutions and the culture, and so now they've turned on each other. There is not one grand leftist ruling concept. They're internally disharmonious, too and this (combined with incompetence) is one of the reasons things are spinning apart.

This is a stupid statement. DeSantis has majority support. If you want to win, you need a majority. In order the get a majority, you need to reduce the opponent's support and raise your own. To get there, you need to either knock out enough of the opponent's supporters or *convert* them and thus make them count for double. Telling members of the *majority* that you don't want them is almost unfathomably stupid.

Also, calling them bad is also a lousy way to move support. You can call their leader - DeSantis - bad. You should, if he's your opponent. But leave the base out of it. If I think DeSantis is right and I like him, saying I'm not a "good" citizen isn't a way to change my mind about him *or* you.

_______

Nope, there was never any idealism, nor any revolt. At least, not from those recognizable as "Boomers", the ones talked about - endlessly - at the time. We were, in fact, the teachers' pets. Those teachers wasted our entire youth telling us how amazingly awesome we were. And most of my generation ate it up.

Naturally, this led to the sense of entitlement we've seen. And to the confidence which is absolute in the belief in one's competence as well as absolute in the utter absence of any such thing.

I am tired of hearing of how the Boomers "changed". No, they (we) were self centered little shits then, and remain so.

What I am seeing a lot is 20% default on the device they hand you with other options you can pick from. But then it makes you feel like a greedy cheapskate if you lower to the standard 15% for standard service. If they really want to use this method it should default to 15% and you raise or lower depending on service.

153 99 This is a stupid statement.

161 It's no secret that Mrs VIA and I continue to listen to Baltimore talk radio rather regularly, even though we now live in South Carolina.

And I gotta say, the go to station that we listen to, WBAL Radio (streaming) has Kim Klacik, the 2020 Republican challenger to Kwaise Mfume as the host from 10-2 on weekdays. She, as well as two other hosts have been HAMMERING the same topics that we discuss here on a daily basis, to include student loans, the odd pattern that the more violent crime that Baltimore suffers, the more Federal money rolls into the coffers, education and so on.

The only reason that I mention this is that there seems to be a grassroots movement of black voices that are slowly but noticeably taking the conversation back to what the real problems are, both in communities as well as State/Federal governance.

I wish them well in their efforts.

We're already dead, sadly. Even if we gain school boards, changing minds through laws and legislation is impossible. Look at EVs. It's that same thing. You can't make people who are convinced that they should burn buildings when they're unhappy and beat up people they disagree as a set-up to cheat in elections for "the greater good" that they shouldn't do it, and you can't convince people who don't think it's a bad thing that they're wrong. It's generational. We got here over 50+ years and Democrats taking over academia, the government, Hollywood, etc. We aren't changing that by enforcing 4% of existing laws.

We can maybe have some states go in the right direction, but the only way the generational changes start occuring is if people start throwing groomers in jail and criminal politicians see justice. I don't see that happening.

I say we make college free for everyone. No college can turn away any student for any reason.

In order to fund this, colleges must run through their endowments. When they run out of endowments, the colleges become direct government entities and their entire operation becomes subject to regulation by state legislatures.

228 With the story of John Kelley (a certifiable bonehead in my opinion) and Jared (or Javanka, is it?), we come back to the core issue: Trump allowed this to happen. The signal charge of a chief executive is to surround yourself with good and reliable people who support your mission -- or at the very least, not to draw in knaves and traitors (except perhaps, in Godfather terms, to "keep your enemy closer.") For whatever reason, Trump was unable to do this.

Of course, in Trump's defense, maybe the world has simply run out of good people.

277 Here is a quick summary of some of the things they said:

- They are afraid to come out publicly due to intimidation tactics such as loss of job and/or license to practice medicine.

- Unvaccinated healthcare workers are extremely upset with the medical community. They feel they have been treated unfairly.

- It is the vaccinated workers who are getting sick with COVID, but it is the unvaccinated who are punished with constant testing, restrictions, and threats of losing their jobs.

- The COVID shots are a disaster. Even for the elderly which is supposed to be the most compelling use case, death rates in elderly homes went up by a factor of 5 after the shots rolled out. Each time the shots are given, the deaths spike. Nobody is talking publicly about this. It’s not allowed.

- Doctors are seeing rates of injury and death increase dramatically in all ages of people. The injuries are only happening to the vaccinated. There is no doubt that this is happening but many doctors have so much cognitive dissonance that they don’t see it.

Posted by: SMOD at August 26, 2022 07:52 AM (RHGPo)

278 - One nurse with 23 years of experience says she’s never heard of anyone under 20 dying from cardiac issues until the vaccines rolled out. Now she knows of around 30 deaths.

- “I have been a nurse for 36 years. I have NEVER witnessed people in their 20s and 30s having strokes, atrial fibrillation, or cardiomyopathies until the Covid vaccines. I work in cardiology. When I mention that someone should look at the vaccines as a possible reason, I am immediately silenced and told, “It is NOT from the vaccine.””

- Doctors aren’t recording vaccination status in the medical records so that all the deaths are attributed to the unvaccinated.

- Doctors are deliberately ignoring the possibility that the vaccines could be the cause of all the elevated events. The events are simply all unexplained.

- Many doctors have either quit or will quit.

Posted by: SMOD at August 26, 2022 07:52 AM (RHGPo)

279 - Some doctors and nurses at top institutions such as Mass General Hospital have falsified vaccine cards. They publicly toe the line and encourage their patients to take the shot knowing full well it is deadly. They value their job more than the lives of their patients. The important thing is they are risking 10 years in jail for doing this. These highly respected medical workers are telling the world that these COVID shots are so dangerous that they are willing to risk 10 years in prison to avoid taking the shot. That’s the message America needs to hear. And if Biden were an honest President, he would call for full amnesty and protection from retaliation for all these cases if people admitted publicly they did this. He’d be amazed at the number of responses he’d get. But he won’t do that because it would be too embarrassing for his administration.

- Things don’t seem to be getting any better.

Posted by: SMOD at August 26, 2022 07:52 AM (RHGPo)

280 - The medical examiners all over the world are not doing the proper tests during an autopsy to detect a vaccine-related death. Without doing the necessary tests, it is very hard to make an association. There isn’t a single “guidance” document from any medical authority anywhere in the world to do these tests on people who die within 3 months of their last COVID vaccination. This is why no associations are found: they aren’t looking and it is deliberate. The mainstream press doesn’t call them out on this either.

- Doctors are being forced to take other vaccines so the hospital can meet their quota. This was admitted to them.

339 Regarding COVID, it is easy to empathize with many people who were played, convinced, forced, coerced or otherwise compelled into either certain behaviors or taking the shot, provided they now retrospectively, and in view of material, substantive facts now regret it or, in the light of truth have changed their opinion.

What is inexplicable is the clinging to ideas, behaviors and opinions that are clearly, and easily dismissed as false. That is the action of a dishonest ideologue, cult member, or a person with a psychosis they simply cannot overcome.

There are material truths and there are lies. Much of what was said and done under the guise of COVID is the latter.

346 This single DU post wraps up the TRUTH behind Republican opposition to student loan forgiveness:
Republicans don't like student loan forgiveness because they can see where we are headed: towards control of the House and Senate for the last two years of Biden's current term as President.

What does that mean?

Fixing Social Security funding, which means higher taxes for those with higher income.
Balancing the budget, which means higher taxes for those with higher income.
Addressing climate change, which likely means reducing the income of the fossil fuel industry.

Republicans woke the dragon when their politically stacked Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade. Once Democrats control both the House and the Senate they will be able to fix several huge problems that have been festering for a long time because Republicans are greedy and only care about using government to line their own pockets.

Throwing tantrums about the inequity of student loan forgiveness is one of their last chances to distract voters from what Democrats are about to be able to do after the Election in November: fix problems created by or made worse by Republican greed.

They cut out the white noise, panic, hyperbole and politics to come to the decision. They became even more suspicious when natural immunity was being completely ignored- something that was never done before. There's truth in what you say - Social Security is just as big a scam now as this college debt fiasco - so the only real solution is for it all to collapse in one great big bonfire of the vanities, and then (after a grinding 10 year greater depression) start to rebuild something more rational out of the ashes. I think I'll live to see the beginning of it, but don't expect to live all the way through.

Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead!

What discount factor is used to arrive at $20.4T? That sounds awfully high, and sounds like it's extrapolated to infinity.

SS can be tweaked, particularly with respect to the age at which you receive full benefits (which they've already done).

Debt forgiveness is forever.
Posted by: quantum mechanic at August 26, 2022 08:17 AM (g1EEm)

Unfunded liabilities for public pension schemes are normally minimized by using very high discount rates(and they're pretty much all underwater), not that social security actually makes any investments unlike state pensions. State unfunded pension liabilities seem to be $8.3T, and they actually invest money and don't send money to the entire population.

Violence? Huh? Only violence is from the left.

Hate? Hate what the left is doing to this country.

Division? Biden and his groupies have done everything in their power to sow division. It was Trump who was actually trying to unify people. Raise all people up economically and socially. It was the left tearing it down with Occupy Wallstreet, BLM protests, Code Pink protests, etc.

Believe it or not, NY has a balanced budget amendment in it's constitution. However, as is usual, the state judges have allowed the legislature to subvert that amendment by hiding liabilities in obligations/agencies that don't get counted (see things like the PA). In a way. But in a way, not. Boomers got the best deal from SS. Increased life expectancy without increased payments. But that ship has sailed. Full benefit age is now 67, and that will increase over time.

Gen X (my generation) ain't getting any handout. We didn't get a handout on our student loans either.

But I do understand that Millennials are the whiniest generation in history and would rather pretend that everyone else is getting a bigger slice of the pie than to actually work for their living.

That seems impossibly low. The electric bill for my 1000 sq ft or so of shop space is higher than that.

505 As usual, the Christian-hating Democrats are pulling their insincere Christian card and declaring Christianity is based on forgiving debt.

They're quoting the Our Father.

I'm quoting my Bible, which says, 'It's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for a college-grad deadbeat to enter the kingdom of heaven.' It's right there in my Bible.

Total unfunded liabilities are ten times the SS number. It cannot be paid for. Period.

This was true 9 years ago (per 2013 Congressional testimony by Prof. Lawrence Kotlikoff of Boston University).

My guess is it more like 15 times now -- likely over $300 trillion, but yeah, cannot be paid for.

507 I have a neighbor that never takes care of their pool and we figured maybe they were having financial problems. The other day they had solar panels installed.
Their pool still looks like crap.

508 I have often wondered why some seemingly very good to excellent conservatives get to DC and become RINOs. It almost seems as if when they get there, the FBI lays down a file in front of them and says this is what we know about you, now play ball or we release it. Could it be that Marjorie Taylor Green has nothing bad in her background?

509 Quantum Mechanic - I'm 60 and the older I get the less I care what happens and I just pray I don't live to be 99 like my Grandmother. With regard to SS, at this point I'm going to get whatever I can when I can, it'll be fun to stick it to the whiny generations. Half kidding. I plan on working till late 70's anyway, I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I retired.

510 Once that $30k is paid off, with interest, they'll start reaping the benefits of the system. How long before it pays back that $30k?

The national average rate is twelve cents a kWh. On Amazon, right now, I'm seeing $680 for a two pack of 320W panels. Use any solar estimating tool, and you'll find that best case for residential solar is 4 good charging hours a day. That's right, kids. If you install 1kWh of panels, expect to get no more than 4 kWh of energy per day out of them. Best case.

So, just for the panels above, ignoring the inverter and all the other goodies ? Together they'll get you 640W x 4 = 2.56 kWh. That'll make you 2.56 kWh x $0.12 = 30.7 cents a day. Panels pay themselves off in just over six years. Very, very best case. Real life ? More like ten years after install and inverters.

511 Everybody acts like student loans are necessary and routine for all college students who aren't from real wealth.

I'm spitting mad about the loans because my family spent time and treasure with costs of its own, to avoid debt in the first place.

I don't see why people who worked saved and sacrificed aren't more deserving than borrowers who agreed to repay easy money on easy terms, who didn't save or sacrifice, deferring or altering choices and options based on what was affordable.
They got the school they wanted on the timetable they wanted without having to take jobs or do without. Why shouldn't they repay, especially those able to repay?

Cap interest, add bankruptcy protections for those in true hardship. but why make me and my kid repay these loans others took, on top of the inflated tuitions those loans caused?

You do NOT have to take a loan to get a degree.

512 I am just incandescent with rage about people who can repay just being handed a wad of cash to cancel out their tuition and expenses, as if people who paid their own way weren't hit by Covid or could just "afford" college without any burdens or sacrifices.

But wait til you hear about Pell Runners - including criminal rings recruiting straw students to scoop up Stafford loans and Pell Grant refunds with exactly zero intention of applying any of it to anyone's education.

Bidens EO will just cancel out the stolen loans.

"Because Kelly had no training in politics, he failed to understand the importance of trade policy in holding the high political ground of Blue Wall manufacturing states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan that Trump won in 2016."

Yup. Exactly like how illegal immigration has worked for decades. Never-ending amnesty legislation or simply never-ending non-enforcement of existing laws for past how many decades.

Same will happen with this. Just like no one gave a shit about the argument that the people who immigrated here the correct way get screwed by amnesty, no one will give a shit about people paying for higher education the right way getting screwed.
