Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | NBC "News" Poll: 74% of Americans Say We're on the Wrong Track; All-Time High Say America's Best Days Are Behind ItThis is the longest period during which over 70% of the public has said we're on the wrong track -- nearly a year. As you know Biden received 81 million vohhhhhsshheszzzzzzzzz. Sorry, I fell asleep writing that due to the well-known syndrome called Repetitive Lie Narcolepsy.Nearly three-quarters of voters in a new poll said they believed things in the U.S. were headed in the wrong direction. An NBC News poll revealed just 21 percent of voters feel the nation is headed in the right direction, while 74 percent think the opposite. Over half of respondents, or 58 percent, said they feel "more worried that America's best years may already be behind us," while 35 percent feel more confident the best years are still ahead. About a third of respondents, or 34 percent, said they think the state of the nation will worsen over the next five years. Just two percent more, or 36 percent, said they think things will get better in that same time period, and 21 percent said they think things will stay the same.In addition, a combined 71% think that the "Inflation Reduction Act" -- which the media now nigh-exclusively calls a "climate bill" -- will either have no effect on inflation or make inflation worse. ![]() NBC's @Yamiche Alcindor on 74 percent of Americans saying the U.S. is on the wrong track: "They're very worried about former President Trump coming back into power, or former President Trump or another Republican stealing the election in 2022 or 2024."Yamiche's now just blaming any negative polling on Democrats fearing that, at some time in the future, some Republicans at some time will win some elections. And also, that Republicans are going around the country lying to people, telling them that inflation is bad and gas prices are high. So, all negative polls are due to Republicans lying, and Democrats worrying that lying Republicans may one day get into office again, due to their lies. That should take care of all negative poll findings for Democrats from here forward, huh? Thanks to Anonysaurus Wrecks for that, from @TomSElliott. Video clip below.

I assume you could analyze this pretty well now. We've had many, many elections where the candidates have to list their expenditures. Yes, some elections, markets, and candidates will be different then others, but you should be able to derive how effective each type of advertising is by now. Was that ever done? My guess is that they (campaign consultants) have no idea, but because that's the only thing they know, every problem gets addressed that way. How else can they justify their phoney baloney jobs? How do they think that plays with the voters? Do they really think people whose life has been made worse by all of this believes that's...a good thing?

The corrective fixes are to conduct random ground area frame interviews and combine that with your call list to determine the error rate of your call list. Ironically, the smaller the district, the harder it is to poll accurately so for the most part, the media polls right now only focus on macro polling of the US where the sample selection and oversampling of minorities, etc. can be done cheaply. But, the special sauce is what your frame is for sampling--pick a bunch of CA and MASS voters, you get a more liberal response than AL but this is mainly opaque to anyone because these internals are almost never released.

For me, it's pretty simple. If polling orgs are paid to get accurate results, and they fail, they should be fired.
None ever have. That tells me they're getting paid to do something else. Posted by: Darrell Harris ------------------ The private polling that candidates do is pretty accurate but these require big bucks that the media does not pay. A pollster engaged in that particular business has to be accurate or be fired. These are almost never released--except as distorted internal polls for suckers aka donors. The easiest way to do that is adding special sauce in the projected turnout of different groups. Besides the media likes being able to skew their polls for the narrative. In normal times, I would say that this poll is very good news -- that such a solid majority of people agree we need to go back and set things right.
But not this year. I think this level of disapproval will be used by the Left -- the same people who celebrate the "necessary pain" of gasoline users in order to once-and-for-all change their behavior -- not to turn back to what worked, but to convince the dolts among the 74% that America doesn't work, can't work, and that we've always been at war with Oceania. Thus, the only way forward is to scrap the whole experiment and rebuild it with a focus on "equity" and all that other nonsense. No, in a sane world, the pragmatists would prevail. Now, it's all about the power. Posted by: red speck at August 22, 2022 01:38 PM (gS3OW) 205

Student debt cancelation isn’t paid for by the taxpayers, the federal government is the lender.
The people with lots of student loans are getting frantic. Only 15% of the population has a Federally guaranteed student loan, and the median amount is less than $30,000. Only a tiny fraction of student loan borrowers racked up six-figures in debt to get a gender studies degree from NYU, and since they all vote Democrat anyway, there's no upside to forgiving the debt, and lots of political downside. I'm always fascinated by how societies seem to *choose* to no longer be great powers. Britain after WWII is the most obvious example, but you can see other examples of course. Polling is useful for trends, not for actual numbers unless you have access to the internals of a poll including sampling frame which are not released much if ever.
Some polling outfits have a much better track record than others and some have a good track record in certain states but not others. I knew a guy that used to run the Roper Center polling and learned a bunch from the guy about the nitty gritty of polling on politics. Knew it from the consumer end but not the production end. So, a binary polling is good, polling is bad throws away useful information. What most people don't do in political analysis is triangulate data sources--like new voter registrations, local economic factors for the respondent, proper weighting via demographics of the sample of voters in a district/polling frame, normal partisan vote in the frame/district, and so on. Want a lesson, read Michael Barone's Almanac of American Politics which comes out every two years with detailed information about the state or congressional district plus the incumbent if any. The effect of campaign money on elections is severely overrated.
Well it fails to take into account HOW that money is spent. Hillary Clinton's campaign budget was probably mostly spent on parties, drugs, and her gigantic liquor bill. Two campaigns using exactly the same tactics and smart campaigning will show very different results based on how much money they spend. Costco does get you a deal on many things. They make their money on memberships.
A dozen eggs around here is around 5.69. It does vary, higher and lower. I was just in Costco the other day and it was 4.69 for TWO dozen. Those are 2019 prices, if not even earlier. They have a use by of six weeks or so. I don't see a valid argument against that other than you're not gonna eat 2 dozen eggs, but that depends on the person/family. The effect of campaign money on elections is severely overrated.
Posted by: Ian S. ----------------------- Yes and no. There is not a linear effect on campaign money and share of the vote nor increasing the likelihood of victory. At a certain point, campaign money increases both the share of the vote and the likelihood of victory but then you either get a decreasing marginal effect or sometimes even an actual negative effect (you are spending because you have a tough opponent) on both. At some point though, you spend through the roof and both variables turn up again. Michael Huffington in the 90's spent over 30 million for a House seat in CA and won. Jon Corzine spent over 100 million in both his initial Senate campaign and then his gubernatorial race. He won. Funny thing is that Cheney outspent Hageman by gobs but still lost--think it was around $300 per vote for Cheney. She would have done better handing out benjamins on the street corner in Laramie than spending it on ads. Posted by: whig at August 22, 2022 02:02 PM (CXr4y) 446

I had seen rumblings on social media about Big Insurance going after Big Pharma re: deaths associated with mRna jabs. But so far the only follow-up I've seen is that Big Insurance refuses to pay on life policies for those jab-injured because they assented to being guinea pigs, essentially. (They agreed to be treated with experimental biotech.)
Posted by: kallisto ---------------- Big insurance can do that if vaxx is stated as the cause but will have problems denying claims of cancers, heart attacks, etc. that are time delayed from the vaxx administration. That is what is driving the death increases and not so much dropping dead instantly. If life insurance starts denying claims wholesale from younger people because of the vaxx then the whole thing goes into the media. Essentially, a secret this big is not going to be kept as it is happening world wide. I would look at getting out of big Pharma companies that have shot exposure as they will likely be bankrupt over time. Posted by: whig at August 22, 2022 02:14 PM (CXr4y) 550

In order to guarantee funding from national organizations, powerful, state level Democrats in purple states will have to go maximalist on abortion. I missed the Fauci thread. I think Fauci was pushed-out by Walensky at CDC, who told Joe, "Either he goes, or I quit." Because much of the COVID communication problem was Fauci saying whatever he felt like saying each day, no matter what the current CDC guidelines were or what updates CDC was preparing to announce. With Fauci hanging around, Walensky would be wasting her time working to improve CDC external communications if the Chinese release another bug in the next two years. Posted by: R. Klain and S.
