DeSantis Proposes Hiring Retired Veterans, Cops, and Paramedics as Teachers, Vowing He Will Not Let State's Education System Be a "Woke Dumpster Fire"

Now we'll hear from one of the dumbest groups of people on the planet that only they have the high levels of education necessary to teach basic skills to children.

All guilds hate competition from outsiders, but especially guilds that protect incompetents and... groomers.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is proposing three initiatives to get more teachers in schools by offering incentives for veterans and first responders who have a bachelor's degree to become educators.

The goal is to fill areas in need such as science, exceptional students' education, and reading. Those approved will receive a bonus of up to $5,000.

"We believe the folks that have served our communities have an awful lot to offer," DeSantis said. "We've got people that have served 20 years in law enforcement. They retire, and some of them are looking for the next chapter in their life."

DeSantis said those interested in teaching will not be able to indoctrinate children with extreme views because "in the classroom, we've battled a lot of ideologies."

"We are not going to let this state descend into some type of woke dumpster fire. We're going to be following common sense. We're going to be following facts, and that's really important," he added.

He's also proposing letting veterans and first responders with an associates degree teach while they complete their bachelor's degree.

I disagree with restricting this program to first responders and veterans. Why not open it up to anyone? I suppose the idea is to make it politically difficult for the teachers unions to accuse their new competitors of being something repulsive, like, say, groomers.

Perhaps her focus should be elsewhere since 90% of her students don't do math on grade level and 87% of them can't read proficiently.

Her students might not know the actual grammatical function of pronouns -- you know, that stuff they used to teach about real pronouns -- but I bet they know all about Gender Studies Novelty Pronouns!

Context: According to exits, DeSantis lost Hispanics by 10 in 2018.

With DeSantis staying as a governor/ally, yes.

Federal? No. DeSantis if funded by the Bush family and Koch bros. The only reason anyone is pushing him (and that includes Erik Erikson and David Frum) is because they think they can sell him as "Trump without the baggage" and they know the establishment isn't afraid of him.

The only baggage Trump has is his America First policies. The media making up lies from piss gate to the Ukraine call to muh insurrection is *not* baggage.

Plus, DeSantis is a zero charisma shrimp with a femme voice. He would have lost FL to the crackhead Gillum without Trump. Just because he has started to make some social conservative noises (always making sure to hold a press conference with adoring people standing behind him) and imitates some of Trump's mannerisms doesn't make him America First. He voted to fast-track TPP when he was a US Rep, for example. (No presser when MAL was raided btw).

DeSantis's only shine is from Trump's reflection. He would be lucky to get Romney's numbers in a general election.

Paulo Freire, Brazilian Commie fuck, is personally responsible for a lot of this. He advocated for "Critical Pedagogy" and created the roadmap for this garbage.

Funny, but it's every GOP controlled state. It's SC, IN, MS, TN, and TX.

The state level GOPs are probably more corrupt than the federal GOP because they get less attention, have more control over local media in comparison to the federal GOP, and have just as much ease fighting off challengers as incumbents as the national boys do.

However, for all their entrenchments, they end up more susceptible to being picked off, especially backbenchers, if targeted by anyone with cash.

He was great in Wisconsin taking on the unions, but when he ran for president, he took a lot of squish positions - particularly on illegal immigration and border security.

One thing I've surmised over the years is that NONE of the "conservative" GOP politicians and NONE of the GOP campaign consultants and/or policy aids read any conservative blogs and they have no idea what conservative actually think/believe.

B/c if they did read conservative blogs - they would have known, among other policy issues, that for the last 3 decades conservatives have been clamoring for border security and have been adamantly against any form of amnesty for illegals.

Yet, when these governors/senators run for president, they take positions that right off the bat disqualify them in conservative eyes. And then they seem genuinely surprised that nobody likes their "act of love" illegal immigration positions.

Absolutely. These are two "professions" *snort* that can be executed well by any educated, reasonably intelligent person.

Ironically, after four or more years of kollidge edumacation the average recipient of degrees in communications or education is even dumber than when he/she/xhe started the studies.

He/she/xhe is also dumber than the mean of the population at large. Hence, the twin disasters that we see in journalism and teaching today.

DeSantis would need to get his cabinet level picks through Mitch McConnell.

Maybe DeSantis would play high-stakes games with McConnell in 2025 that he could win, but so might Trump. I think Trump's personal animosity against McConnell would be an added factor to include.

But the idea that DeSantis wouldn't see the same resistance from the administrative state and McConnell to fire and hire the right people is silly. It's a wash between the two at best.

263 He was great in Wisconsin taking on the unions, but when he ran for president, he took a lot of squish positions - particularly on illegal immigration and border security.

Same was true of Rand Paul and Ted Cruz. Trump, a New York City (former) liberal, sounded more conservative than the whole field in 2016, particularly on immigration and the border. That and his criticism of the American consensus on foreign policy set him apart from everyone. Why did this happen? Because Trump has f-you money and did not need the blessing of the establishment and its financiers. That's why there cannot be Trumpism without Trump, even from good conservatives, like Desantis, Walker, Paul, or Cruz. They have to take the establishment's money and the strings that come with it to compete nationally. (I suspect it is also why Trump's campaign was so relentless in hounding ordinary folks for contributions too.) Warts and all (and he has a lot of them), Trump is it right now.

It can be taught, and should be. The Socratic Method works pretty well. I had some teachers (three or four in high school, one in junior high) who used it. All but one of them were men, which I suspect means - when I was in school - that men used it a *lot* more (there are comparatively few male teachers) but I don't know if that's true or even relevant.

One of those teachers - 11th grade English - explained how the method worked and how he was taught it. It can be and is taught but like all things it requires practice. This is what student teachers are supposed to be doing - practicing. But that isn't the case. The education degree system is designed to gatekeep the guild and the teachers' unions are designed to protect the guild.

I've started calling Bush 43 Shrub and even recently someone here was mad about it.

Yes, I know its from moonbat Ivins but Bush 43 is such a disappointment on so many levels.

Remember when Shrub got elected we were talking about him gutting the then bloated $2T budget. HAHA

And then the line was, "we just have to win this war first" which he proceeded to have no interest in winning.

My wife was adamantly against it, her parents were public teachers, etc. Its one of those things where I thought we were more on the same page than we really were.

Public schools have changed dramatically in terms of what they let teachers do in the classroom.

There has been a surge of younger people talking about the virtues of monarchy in recent years. This is dumb. Monarchy is a bad system by comparison to a Constitutional Republic.

But let's be real - we don't have one of those anymore, and a competent monarch would be a huge improvement over this putrid thing we do have. A can't really blame dumb kids for this kind of thinking.

Real-world applicability is important, and few math teachers in my experience emphasize this. This isn't necessary for the basic arithmetic, but even there it can be done with something everyone - even a child - experiences: money. Algebra and the like beg for applicability in the minds of kids, and teachers almost never address it competently. I use Algebra literally every day.

Probably because it's so obvious people don't think it needs to be said.

Trump 2024, DeSantis 2028 and 2032.

Because all of those same people are still in D.C., and when DeSantis - who is a great governor - gets to D.C., he will be treated exactly like Trump was and is. He will be destroyed. Let Trump be vengeful and clean house, then let DeSantis be a good president to try and get this ship of state headed in the right direction.

Take Trump out of the equation and that's it for the last 35 years. Everyone thinks DeSantis can do it because Trump did. They need to look at the long line of Republicans who have splattered on the concrete since 1990 and wonder if it's just a coincidence.

They learned how to control a class, how to organize a lesso plan, how to follow the lesson plan, the ins and outs of teaching a bunch of ignorant kids how to read, write, add, and subtract. Tell your wife that GSA club (which I'm guessing is what your school district has) has become problematic for even well-intentioned teachers running it. It started as Gay-Straight Alliance, with an emphasis on anti-bullying and team-building, to Genders & Sexualities Alliances.

From its website: "GSAs have evolved beyond their traditional role to serve as safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth ... and have emerged as vehicles for deep social change related to racial, gender, and educational justice."

I've talked to girls, including a couple lesbians, who were bullied WITHIN the group dynamics into extracurricular situations and social media interactions that made them uncomfortable. But quitting the club wasn't an option.

Yes. One of the tactics of the GOPE has been to propose good ideas so far in advance that they’re guaranteed to fail (or propose so many at the same time that the combination is guaranteed to fail).

People were asking the same question about only banning sex grooming at grades 3 and lower. Of course teachers shouldn’t be grooming high school students. But there’s a gigantic difference in how the public will perceive a teacher teaching nine year olds how to perform anal sex vs. 18 year olds.

Teaching people how to approach and think about a problem is tough- but it is the essence of teaching. Mostly because people do not look at problem solving as a multi method way of approaching something. If one does not work, try thinking about it a different way. McCain?? What was his platform? He essentially campaigned on the idea that Obama was a good guy and would make a good president.

Romney?? Again, he pretty much refused to attack Obama or fight back against the media. And again, his platform was essentially "we'll do what the dems are doing, just a little slower".

511 This is true. I had a teacher who was quite brilliant. He had two sons who got 1600 SATs when that was a perfect score. When he was 15, he worked at Boeing, helping the Engineers with their math.

He was not a good math teacher. He would do a single demonstration of a simple form of a new type of problem, then tell us to work in groups. If we asked for help, he would point out a single issue with what we were doing, then disappear behind a book.
Posted by: bonhomme at August 17, 2022 02:15 PM (eyxn4)

Not every instance but in many instances people gifted in Math see numbers much differently than "regular" people.
This is the problem with Common Core. They are trying to apply something that gifted students perform to "regular" students under the guise that it will make everyone gifted.

It doesn't.

If a teacher cannot relate the lesson to the students in a form they can comprehend they cannot be a great teacher.

Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, Buy ammo, food, water at August 17, 2022 02:06 PM (XvPQV)

Curtis Yarvin states that Monarchy is the best way because the Monarch has a vested interest in making the kingdom work and be successful . . . Without explaining how any king actually runs a kingdom directly.
Any large government has a bureaucracy, and it works for itself. That is excluding the need to balance off the needs, wants, desires, and economic stupidities of any peerage, and the question of whether the peerage is open or closed caste.
And it doesn't take into account of what a "bad king" can do: the Saxons voted on their king, but only once, they were stuck. Even with a term limited "king" like the PM of Canada a bad king destroys a country.

In a way our federal republic is an attempt to recreate a monarchy while allowing it to be small and open with a type of peerage.
I doubt that Yarvin can find a better compromise than that, or at least he has not popped one out in any of the interviews he has given.

but my point was simply that the candidates that ended up getting the nomination were terrible candidates that didn't really campaign to win and didn't really offer the voting public a true differentiation from the dem candidate.

The dem candidates always run on things like "we're going to change everything and make it better!!!".

The 30 Years War was the destroyer of central europe, last of the religious wars 1618-1648. Saved the Protestants from destruction in the early part, devolved into a war of nations.

The ACW was 1861-5, although you could argue that Bleeding Kansas was the real start as the South tried to steal a slave state out of Kansas Territory by hook or by crook, mostly crook. Despite that, no excuse for John Brown's massacre there.
