Weekend Hobby, Craft and Bodging Thread

Greetings, all. Time once again to head to the garage, basement, shop, studio, craft room or wherever else you go to make a mess and lose yourself in something creative.

Please note this is not an open thread, so please refrain from things political. Lord knows we have lots of opportunities for that. Okay, here we go.

I've featured Samy from Germany before and once again he makes a futuristic shadowbox diorama from just basic materials like card, styrofoam and Sculpey.

Continuing in the futuristic/dystopian theme, here's an amazingly creative transformation of a cheap action figure into a cool alien miner.

Danish woodworker Jesper makes a really nice table from reclaimed pallet wood. Pallets intrigue me as a source of raw material but it is a lot of work to break down and prepare. Still, I love the wax finish and want to try that out one day.

Jimmy DiResta is the doyen of the YouTube maker movement. He's skilled in virtually any material. Here, he shows off his talents on the sewing machine and walks you through making a heavy duty tool bag.

Peter Lloyd Lee is a model railroad custom builder, and he's also damned good at translating his customers' wishes into realize-able track plans. Here, he walks you through the process.

At the risk of stepping on KT's gardening toes, here's something different to try; aquaponics. Raising fish and plants both as food as well as decorative purposes. Nice beginner's overview.

Another great restoration, this time of an antique coffee mil by TRG.

Ben Uyeda is a talented designer and makes some unique pieces from materials like steel, plywood and concrete. Here's a space saving desk from steel and wood that folds out of the way when not in use.

I scratch built the oxen yoke and tied to make a weathered wagon but not sure it turned out like the video I watched. Have another exactly the same but painting the outside the Greenpoint Russians used for their artillery and vehicles.
Other thing is needs a driver, preferably one with a cane as that's how the oxen are steered but don't have a figure yet.
Need to finish that next wagon and will put on parade of complete 1st Western Army of Borodino.

18 Ahoy, landlubbers, mariners, and all aficionados of rum, sodomy and/or the lash. We don't judge here.

Spending a glorious afternoon here at Dana Pt, CA with a pile of projects awaiting my attention. Traffic in nubile young females on paddleboards is light to moderate today.

Electrical is now the focus. My deep dive into the vessel's 12V electrical system revealed a virtual house of horrors. I'm thinking I'll need to rip everything out and rewire the entire boat with well-marked, well organized cabling. I have the bits and pieces for the initial phase but somehow, old man alcohol and nubile ladies on paddleboards conspire to prevent me from mKing substantial progress toward my goal.

I'm meeting with the canvas guy this week to finalize an order for a replacement dodger and bimini. Preliminary estimate is $5600. The shelling out continues apace..l

but I'll have to asy this Jesper character is one of the worst
he is exhibit #1 why not to watch wood working vids
never ever, ever never do you glue boards at 90 degrees
NEVER, EVER
wood shrinks at a diiferent rate from end to end and across the grain
if you do this, eventually you will have cracks b/c of the shrinkage differential

and side to side joints do not need any mechanical implement
and when glue boards side to side, you should have opposing annular rings

and, using shitty wood such as a pallet will dull the shit out of your knives b/c of the dirt embedded in the wood

I have a buddy that has a similar sized shed in his yard that he wants to turn into a cold smokehouse for sausages and cheese. It's doable with some insulation and ventilation but we are in Texas and it would not be usable in the summertime. I figure we could cold smoke in that thing maybe 4-5 months out of the year.

We do turn out some butt kicking summer sausages and he has people lined up to buy his smoked cheese in the late fall.

Today Was for new mortar to bring the bed up to just under subfloor height (avg of about 1 1/2" needed). I thought I'd be clever and use self leveling floor prep, instead of mostly mortar and then a half inch or so of leveler, thus saving a step and material cost.

I didn't seal the mortar where it meets the floor and chimney framing. A bunch of leveling compound dripped into the basement. A mess and I stopped pouring, so threw out prolly 80% of the leveling compound. (1 of 2)

Different pallets for different materials. Back in the day the majority were hardwood, so woodworking guys liked to get a hold of them for projects. We got enough Amish around our neck of the woods that we can get cheap roughcut hardwood so I never messed around with pallets.

99 Say Cicero are you going to relate your physicist joke?

--------

Okay. Here's a decent rendition...

A farmer, an engineer, and a physicist were all asked to build a chicken coop. The farmer says, “Well, last time I had so many chickens and my coop was so and so big and this time I have this many chickens so I’ll make it this much bigger and that oughtta work just fine.” The engineer tackles the problem by surveying, costing materials, reading up on chickens and their needs, writing down a bunch of equations to minimize the cost per chicken, taking into account the lay of the land and writing a computer program to solve the problem. The physicist looks at the problem and says, “Let’s start by assuming a spherical chicken in a vacuum...”.

See? Physics humor is the best humor!

I also wanted to make these light pots called hypertuff or something similar. You use bags of cement and perlite. The pots look like cement planters but they're light so I would be able to move them. I think I need molds too.

167 Any idea how butternut or Honduran mahogany compares to English brown oak for carving with hand tools? Never had a chance to use the brown oak.
Posted by: JTB at August 13, 2022 06:42 PM (7EjX1)

butternut is like walnut, maybe a little softer
and Honduran Mahogany is kinda brittle
either can be carve but not that easily for the inexperienced

English brown oak is almost like basswood
however, in any desirable thickness, unporcuable

learn how to sharpen and you can carve almost anything
sharpening is the trick

When a teenager I worked summers for a local framer. Being in KY tobacco was a major cash crop. I've done everything you could do to it; planted, hoed, suckered, topped, cut, hung in barn, tied into hands. Even worked part time at college in a tobacco warehouse. Smoked it for 40 years as well, sadly.

Oberammergau (the place with the passion play every 10 years) is a wood carving mecca. I only had weekends off when my boss sent me over to Germany for a month and all the shops were closed on the Saturday I was able to make it there; so all I could do is look through the glass windows and take pictures. Just looking saved me a bunch of money.

Kind of fun, actually, as I remember all the things we did as a family, and then seeing the girlfriends enter the pictures, then weddings, etc. The only hard time was the year my mom passed away, and it was her last Christmas, birthday etc. Which we didn't know, of course.

216 213 ... "Comfort bird?"

Ronster,

A comfort bird is a small, very smooth bird carving that can fit in the hand. It was first done years ago by a carver who wanted something 'comforting' for folks in hospice or nursing homes to handle. No sharp edges. They seemed to soothe the folks. Sorta like some people handle rosary beads. They have since become a favorite project for carvers. I believe Beavercraft makes a kit (wood and tools) to make them.
