Wednesday Morning Rant [Joe Mannix]

The Boogeyman

Everything in public life today indicates the unserious and obsessive passions of those running the show. Behavior from the highest corridors of power to corporate boardrooms to lecture halls, classrooms, doctors' offices and the press appears to be just so much obsession with minutia and symbolic enemies. It's passionate argument over which flavor of fancy coffee creamer to use or who hates the symbolic enemy more as the house burns down.

This is perhaps nowhere more apparent than in the stupid, venal, partisan and obsessive pile of trash that used to be called "the press." The flippant and casual immaturity with which the press addresses the developments and stories of the day is breathtaking. There were two headlines recently that underscore their unprofessional and obsessive behavior, both of which were brought to my attention by fellow Morons.

First, there was last week's thinly-reported 95-1 vote in the Senate to approve the entry of Sweden and Finland into NATO. This does not make their entry a done deal by any means, but it is an important step. Whatever your opinions on NATO, the potential expansion of that organization or the consequences of it, this action is a big deal. 48 out of 50 Republicans (Hawley voted against; Paul voted present) joined 47 Democrats on the "yes" vote. And how did Washington's premier gossip rag "The Hill" cover this fairly big story? The headline is McConnell gets win on Trump in NATO vote. The partisan hacks and Trump-obsessives cannot help themselves.

This is a story about a Biden Administration ambition to expand NATO and broad bipartisan support. McConnell likely had fairly little to do with it, beyond whipping his caucus - but it didn't need much whipping. The House version passed with just 18 opposition votes from Republicans. This is something both parties and the administration want. This isn't about McConnell and it isn't about Trump. Trump was a NATO skeptic, but - in case you've forgotten - he hasn't been in power for more than two years. Yet the asinine and obsessive framing remains: this is a great victory by McConnell over Trump, despite the fact that this is an ambition of the current administration. It doesn't matter that this move is - justified or not - provocative or that it marks a major escalation in geopolitics. They must make it about their boogeyman.

Second, that great reservoir of journalistic integrity - USA Today - had its coverage of the Mar-a-Lago raid. One headline was notable for how it made it very clear what this is about: The truth? A lot can still go wrong, but FBI search on Trump's Mar-a-Lago was cathartic. It was cathartic you see. We all needed a great emotional release because we're all Trump-obsessed idiots, so this was necessary even if it is unsuccessful. This unprecedented, dangerous and - despite the efforts at normalization - extremely controversial action is needed because we need an anti-Trump dopamine hit. Hell of a take, USA Today. You're clearly very serious people.

These people are foolish mental children. Things that have nothing to do with their boogeyman are reframed as being great victories against the boogeyman. Things that are unprecedented, provocative, corrosive, destructive or controversial are all just great because it's a strike on the boogeyman. The boogeyman is all there is, and all things are explained by their intersection with him.

But they're serious. And balanced. And fair. And smart. And very, very serious. They're not at all unserious, obsessive, partisan idiots. Not. At. All.

I am not in favor of expanding NATO. That isn't important, though. Clearing obstacles to expanding NATO - regardless of whether you agree with that action - is a big deal, especially given current events. Banks highlight fossil-fuel support in ESG reversal

Major US banks including Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase are reversing course from their outspoken shift toward environmental, social and governance-focused priorities and instead touting their relationships with fossil-fuel companies. The pivot stems largely from a wave of backlash financial services companies are facing from Republican-controlled states over their intention to reduce fossil-fuel investment.

What's *really* funny about that is how it exposes conflicting narrative objectives. If they wanted to, the press could - with some legitimacy - lay the inflation story at Trump's feet. Biden has made everything way worse and destroyed our ability to pull out of it quickly, but we'd be seeing higher (though not this in all likelihood) inflation right now regardless, even if Trump had been re-elected. You cannot do what we did during the COVID response and not suffer inflation to at least some degree.

They *could* put some of this on Trump, but they largely don't because the COVID narrative is sacrosanct and we cannot have any press that indicates that the response might have been damaging.

76 Thanks JM. I've been enjoying these more and more as you've settled in to a very nice column. There is a lot to this theory about obsession with minutiae.

I think one important piece of the equation is how much propaganda and persuasion ("mental mindfuck" for short) is top of the ladder for all these dear diary journolists.

Especially with regards to the first story. The idea of a McConnell "win" over Trump is cucking to Trump. It is a weakening image to see him beaten by an aging turtle who is reviled by all but "True Conservatives" and seen mostly as effeminate and ineffective.

Trump doesn't allow himself to be seen as anything but strong. He is always The Guy. He's the swinging dick in the room. And they have tried for *years* to change that. If you remember they started with "Drumpf" way back in 2015. They wanted to take away his name and his brand. It didn't work. Nothing has worked. But they will keep trying.

Yes, yes. Cathartic, yes.

However, they have now normalized police action against political rivals based on the political equivalent of bringing federal charges for littering.

Given the incredible amounts of disappearing money in Democrat favorite projects, I'm guessing much more than than little picayune nothings could be brought up against, well...any Democrat in power.

The hands off pols out of office treaty by far benefitted Democrats more than Republicans.

There's an old curse - May you get want you wish for.
That seems to apply here.

82 Excellent rant - it shows the clear inability of our current culture to have a discussion of any serious nature. And yet the Left also thinks if they just explain things to us better we'd understand and agree with their viewpoint. So maybe this bogeyman framework is the shortcut to their typical emotion (factless) appeal.

This is an odd take, but one typical of a MAGAt. How is it "nothing but gaslighting" to hear that the FBI did a thorough search and investigation of the premises. Do you really think that a man like Donald Trump would be above hiding, well, ANYTHING in a lady's clothing? The FBI had to search everywhere. Hiding or smuggling contraband in clothing isn't exactly unprecedented. I'm sure the FBI went through through the Orange Menace's closet, too, but that won't stir up weird MAGA hatred like going through The Great Trump's concubine's closet will.

If you want to understand everything the Left does with regard to Trump, view it through these three lenses and you will have it every time:

1. Put Trump on "defense"
2. Punish Trump and intimidate his associates
3. Give the media/leftards a fresh dose of Narrative

It is always those three things, not necessarily in that order.

109 The major European countries have allowed themselves to be overrun by Muslims and other antagonistic cultures. There's nothing in Europe that is worth the USA defending anymore. On top of that, we have good reason to doubt the current competence of our military leadership and our executive leadership. Recruitment is down because the military now officially hates the very Americans that have traditionally signed up over our history.

This all augurs poorly for expanding NATO.

As long as the USA props up NATO, the European countries have little incentive to build their own defense.

Democrats would have to essentially gain seats to maintain their majority, and that has happened just about once in the last 50 years of first term presidential administrations of the same party (2002).

The idea that this was the presidency that bucked the trend of the governing party losing power in Congress during the midterms was always, always one of the dumbest things put forward by anyone over the last few years.

With a five seat majority, it was only a question of how small Democrats would get in the House, not if they would lose the majority.

And all of them, except people offended because Trump said 'p---y', have been played by the Deep State. The Deep State and their Media monkeys fabricated a narrative that Trump is a racist, gay-hating, Muslim-hating, women's rights-hating, abortion-hating, treasonous, totalitarian monster.

This was done to recruit the masses of foot soldiers the Deep State needed to battle Trump and his supporters in the trenches on their terms, not on economic or national security terms. The narrative was also used to justify any legal or Congressional action against Trump, in order to slow him down and eventually get him out of office, in order to protect the Deep State's hold on power.

161 "26 "95-1 vote in the Senate to approve the entry of Sweden and Finland into NATO"

This is a great idea if our ultimate goal is to get our Woke Military killed for no good reason."

I've heard variations on this arguing against admitting Finland and Sweden. The reality is that while their current military spending is below the 2% target they actually invested heavily beforehand going back to the 80's and 90's. Finland and Sweden are both obsessed with the idea of being attacked by Russia. Sweden has an entire system of hundreds of dispersal airbases which could be used in the event of an attack to get their aircraft to survive an initial attack. They've developed their own combat aircraft, missiles, SAMS, firearms, their version of the Leopard 2 tank is one of the best in the world. They have 120 combat aircraft, the british who are the US's biggest ally, have roughly 144. They have their own AWACs aircraft. They have about 280 tanks, all of which are leopard 2 variants, which is more than Germany has. They have 11 very capable combat ships, and 5 extremely quiet and relatively new subs. Its not a huge navy, but respectable.

Also, when people talk about bad candidates for Senate, we do have extreme examples like Todd Akin and Christine McDonald (?), but most of the time when "quality of candidates" becomes a driving narrative post-election, it's in races that the party wouldn't have won in a "normal year".

So, Biden is historically bad. His approval rating is in the gutter (propped up, more than likely). We're going to go from the "problem candidates" being Oz in PA to someone like Tiffany Smiley in WA. If WA GOP had just nominated someone better somehow, maybe that candidate could have gone across the finish line...

This perspective, it must be cathartic, has been building as a central tenet for years within the Uniparty, and it most certainly rocketed off to places yet to be known the moment then candidate Trump came down the golden elevator. Orwell's Two Minutes of Hate and the North Korean cathartic wailing at the proper moment point out that institutionalized cathartic expression serves totalitarian masters well. To fail at being properly cathartic at all times is the equivalent of standing around naked in a crowded public space; everyone stares, and everyone knows who must be avoided and quite rightly hauled away.

Last August, I took my son to the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma so he could understand the kind of courage and sacrifice required to live in a democratic society. John Lewis embodies that spirit. Although I've never met him, he is one of my heroes.
Thank you, Robert Reich, for saying what many of us feel, "John Lewis is the conscience of America. Donald Trump doesn’t have the moral stature to kiss John Lewis’s feet."
Or, as Joseph Welch said to Joseph McCarthy, "At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"

If you read the New Yorker propaganda, about Trump v the Generals, you realize this is very true. They justify 'resisting' him from the inside. How's that for following orders from the commander in chief. Milley claims are histrionic and he paints himself into a corner. Apparently the person who supposedly convinced all these people not to resign but to resist was Robert Gates. This is the insurrection. The war masters didn't want Trump withdrawing from foreign entanglements.

That is perhaps fair. He wanted them to abide by their agreements and avoid further expansion. I strongly suspect he would rather break up NATO than have it continue as it had been for decades. That is not precisely NATO-skeptical, but it certainly is according to how any and all NATO arguments are framed, which is that it must always grow and we must always subsidize however much is necessary. From a status quo standpoint, he was a NATO skeptic. From a real policy standpoint, he wasn't.

During the Continuation War, they recovered all their territories lost in the Winter War, and then stopped rather than continuing east and cutting off Leningrad from the north and completing the German's encirclement of the city. This forced Germany to divert forces that could have been used against Moscow to maintain the siege. Not wise. Once they threw in with Berlin they should have gone all out.

The more movies I watch, the more I get irritated by this very common crosscutting technique.

I want to see both actors in a conversation in the same frame at the same time, reacting to each other.

There are two main reasons filmmakers do it, though. The first is the advent of television (in the 50s) that pushed filmmakers to making their films television friendly to 12 inch screens. It's easier to see a whole face on that than two faces on opposite sides of the screen that will likely get panned and scanned. The second is that shooting both sides of a conversation separately lets the editor choose performances, cut out lines of dialogue, and rearrange conversations at a whim.

It irritates me.

336 Solzhenitsyn on "The Current Thing:"

"One discovers a common trend of preferences within the Western press as a whole, generally accepted patterns of judgment, and maybe common corporate interests, the sum effect being not competition but unification. Unrestrained freedom exists for the press, but not for the readership, because newspapers mostly transmit in a forceful and emphatic way those opinions which do not too openly contradict their own and that general trend.

Without any censorship in the West, fashionable trends of thought and ideas are fastidiously separated from those that are not fashionable, and the latter, without ever being forbidden, have little chance of finding their way into periodicals or books or being heard in colleges.

Your scholars are free in the legal sense, but they are hemmed in by the idols of the prevailing fad. There is no open violence, as in the East; however, a selection dictated by fashion and the need to accommodate mass standards frequently prevents the most independent-minded persons from contributing to public life and gives rise to dangerous herd instincts that block successful development."

I don't say it's bad. It can be effective, but it's also how 99% of conversations are filmed now.

No longer do we have scenes like in His Girl Friday where Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell actually play off of each other.

Filmmaking language and grammar has been dumbed down dramatically, and I lay a lot of that blame on the reaction to television.

I know law and common sense seem to have few intersections these days, but I note that cell phone videos of police doing their jobs are sacrosanct if they implicate the cops. A store video might be used to convict a bodega owner who was defending his property and life for murder if the junta has its way.

Why would professionally installed security video in a private residence not be helpful to anyone honestly trying to see and understand what was happening at Mar A Lago? Why does a resident not have a right to film what is happening on his own property?

I know this is all rhetorical, but, the contortions and double standards these people think they can impose are mind boggling.

Those working for the former president who were at his Florida estate during the raid refused to turn off security cameras on the premises despite instructions from federal agents to do so.

'The FBI and others from the Federal Government would not let anyone, including my lawyers, be anywhere near the areas that were rummaged and otherwise looked at during the raid on Mar-a-Lago,' Trump posted to his Truth Social page on Wednesday morning.

'Everyone was asked to leave the premises, they wanted to be left alone, without any witnesses to see what they were doing, taking or, hopefully not, 'planting,'' he continued while placing doubt that the raid was conducted properly.||

Modern Libertarian economic theory posited that companies would always seek the highest gain because they have an unrealistic appraisal of humans. This led to the disastrous gutting of anti trust under Reagan and then Bush I. Management in corporations seek power as much or even more than money and Burnham's managerial state more closely resembles actual human behavior. The managers run the corporations to their inclinations not that of the stockholders.

No they do not. A steady line of court precedents have indicated that law enforcement does not have the power to insist not to be videoed or recorded by an individual including a target of investigation. The 1st Amendment protects such things in public and that would apply doubly in a private abode.

The stupid leo argument about protecting investigative procedures does not apply here as it was a warrant, it did not involve confidential informers, and warrants always must specify particularly the things, places, and items to be seized in a search.

BTW, the plain sight doctrine does not apply when you are going through items like documents not pertaining to the particulars in a search. For example, taking a serial number and then running it through databases to try to identify stolen equipment.

He of course pressed NATO to .... well, actually do something, in terms of member countries' defense spending. Within the terms of his argument of course he was obviously correct. The decline of NATO member country defense efforts has reached a dramatic and even comical point.

But he was still operating within the long outmoded framework of, well - NATO. That's the point. The alliance has lacked a rationale since it was crowned a success in 1991, simply by virtue of its mission having been completed, successfully.

European members quite rationally have reduced their military readiness/spending to negligible levels. Since there's no threat they face. AND - the other part that's tricky - because the "free rider" problem, wherein they rely on the US because they know the US won't disarm.

It's a big leap, and outside his core areas like trade, so while Trump is exactly the sort of guy who could make the leap, he didn't happen to, in this area.

Good catch on that headline. The point of it is to paint Trump as anti-Ukraine, and pro-Russia. The Left is enjoying the popularity of their latest thing and want to paint anyone who is not painting blue and gold on their forehead as being against Western Civilization. They are disingenuously cobranding "slava ukraina" and "PDT"

Trump was for NATO paying their own way, but I have not heard him saying anything against Europe defending itself, or NATO expansion. The two do not correlate. He was also pro-Ukraine territorial integrity, something the dems just wanted to "reset" away so they could continue the graft. He was also pro-killing Russians.

Saying he was against this vote is like saying Reagan is pro-3M illegals a year now because he signed the immigration bill in the 80s.
