The most interesting part to me is how it contradicts itself. It's a rainy, dreary day, yet the colors are bright and pure and only slightly blended. The lines and shapes are jagged and dramatic, but the subject is pretty laid-back. The figures don't seem to be in a hurry to get out of the rain.
Another interesting thing is how the mood seems to shift from left to right. The colors change from dominant warms to all dominant cools. I like this painting. There's a lot going on here. Posted by: Kris at August 11, 2022 09:49 AM (OyyDO) 110

The Biden administration is defending a federal ban on gun-ownership for medical marijuana users, urging a federal judge to dismiss a challenge to the statute.
Medical marijuana users should be prohibited from owning guns because the substance impairs the "judgment, cognition, and physical coordination" of those under its influence, lawyers for the Justice Department argued. It was an absolute abattoir. The Germans had the bright idea that they would bleed the French white there, and while they certainly did that, they also did it to themselves.
Posted by: Archimedes That's what the German commander, Erich von Falkenhayn, said afterwards but there is a lots informed speculation that that was merely his excuse for failure. Rather a Pee Wee Herman "I meant to do that" moment. Meanwhile, on the other side, General Petain gained his reputation there as the saviour of France. That reputation would later save his life as that was the only reason they didn't hang him for collaborating with the Nazis after the liberation of France. 137 Medical marijuana users should be prohibited from owning guns because the substance impairs the "judgment, cognition, and physical coordination" of those under its influence, lawyers for the Justice Department argued.
My guess: Veterans, primarily because the proposed rules for mental health conditions would increase the minimum disability rating from 0% to 10%. But if they do receive the 10% disability rating down-the-line, that could be counted towards "priority" placement in Federal employment To counter that, agencies such as Labor and Treasury use "direct hire" authority - as they have now - to get around hiring "10-point Veterans" in certain positions. After 1914, WWI was a war of attrition and 1916 was a particularly horrible year for it. First, you get the German offensive at Verdun and then you get the pointless slaughterhouse of the Somme when the Brits tried to release German pressure on Verdun by forcing the German reinforcements to be shunted off to the Somme.
WWI Generals should have remembered the US Civil War in the East from 1864-65 where Grant used superior numbers in Virginia to grind Lee's Army down and causing horrendous casualties for both sides. Cold Harbor was a prequel to the slaughter in the trenches. Similarly, the 1905 Russo-Japanese war featured trench warfare in China with high casualties also. Artillery, machine guns annihilated large formations of slow moving infantry trying for a breakthrough because they lacked the speed to exploit any gaps (without the new tanks coming out). So, counterattacks inevitably killed a lot of the surviving attackers and prevented any breakouts. Verdun, in particular, was a large complex of forts where the French defenders took a pounding via artillery but gave back even more death to Germans trying to take those interlocking forts. Sometimes - not always - things are exactly as they appear. If the Trump raid didn't fit neatly into their pattern of behavior since he announced, I would look deeper.
Posted by: whig at August 11, 2022 10:40 AM (CXr4y) The Civil War's use of trench warfare, previously fairly unknown in the west (Asia has used trenches and tunnels forever), was very much a foreshadowing of WW1's changes to military tactics. The US is larger and more open than Europe though, which meant that outflanking remained an option, unlike in most of Europe where it becomes two sets of trenches facing each other for miles on end. IIRC there was a lot of government malfeasance uncovered during Trump's term. The lid was blown off quite a number of domestic spying, criminal wrong doing, etc. by the DoJ and the 3 letter intelligence agencies. Trump made generalized accusations now and then, and "promised" to release the details. Had he been able to move forward with that effort I'd imagine the embarrassment to the Obama and *biden cabals would have been significant.
Doubtful there'd be any conquences. In any event, those documents will never see the light of day. Posted by: Martini Farmer at August 11, 2022 10:44 AM (BFigT) 315

I read "Mud, Blood and Poppycock" by Gordon Corrigan about the myths of the BEF in WWI. Basically he says that, yes, things were bad, but the generals did the best they could considering the mass enlistment, the technology of the time and the constraints of the French alliance. They did the best for the men as they could as well. Units rarely spent more than a fee days in the firing line, hot food was served as often as possible and officers tried to keep the trenches as habitable. I don't know what you mean by silver lining. Trump took boxes of classified material from the White House when he left. Morale had been superior to firepower for thousands of years. The Napoleonic wars were still all about breaking the enemy lines, and then Europe had a period of prolonged peace.
Posted by: Red Turban Someguy -------------------------- Sieges were the exception to the rule but by Cromwell's time, castles were no longer safe havens due to cannons. So, for a couple of centuries, warfare became battles of movement again and choosing the proper battlefield. As you said, that probably reached its peak during the Napoleonic War and the early US Civil War. Defenses though adapted to the point that the charges of the Old Guard or Pickett's charge became idiotic exercises in killing a large number of troops pointlessly. R. Sieges were the exception to the rule but by Cromwell's time, castles were no longer safe havens due to cannons. R. Lee knew better than to emulate Northern tactics but I always thought he fought half hearted on his two Northern offensives.
Posted by: whig at August 11, 2022 10:54 AM (CXr4y) There is a dramatic rise in lethality of battles and troops became a lot less prone to routing in the last few centuries. *grabs the tinfoil helmet* I think this is it. I think they wanted to do this in such a way that they could also bring in his supporters and try to make them toxic as well. I think that holding the J6 guys in durance vile for well over a year was something they thought would have more impact and get more people pissed off. They needed a new way to not only go after Trump- but also the part of the country that supports him. I think they believe this is a smaller minority that they can freeze and make repellent to the vast middle, that they see as sheep who will go whichever way the wind blows. If they can destroy that group, they will then be able to have their commie, technocratic dream. Posted by: Aetius451AD at August 11, 2022 11:00 AM (dNqv+) 391

The west believes in logistics (training, gear, numbers). China believes in military genius(brilliant commanding officer with the soldiers being near irrelevant by comparison).
Posted by: Red Turban Someguy ----------------------- Robert E. Lee and Napoleon were both geniuses at the tactical game and wars of movement. So was Hannibal for that matter or Alexander. But, your strategy has to fit whatever army you have so Washington's Fabian tactics arguably saved the Revolution despite losing almost every large engagement with the British. Grant's attrition tactics were not particularly brilliant from 1864-65 but he knew the US had more bodies and material to throw into the breach than did the Confederates. For the most part, China's military history was of internal fighting and a massive population--not force projection. That is why China never really focused on logistics, training, etc. is because it did not need to. Expeditionary forces like the British or Americans had to focus on such matters. Summary, the world is not flat and a Chinese military officer will see matters differently than a US counterpart would. Posted by: whig at August 11, 2022 11:03 AM (CXr4y) 408

Well, how do you feel about a viola? Posted by: Ciampino - a viola is better than a violin because it burns longer An orchestra is on tour when the conductor is taken ill and rushed to the hospital. No other conductor is available for a few weeks, but the first violist volunteers to conduct, as he's been with the orchestra for years and knows the score. Management agrees to this and he fills in until a new conductor arrives. Next concert, he returns to his chair. The second violist says "Hey, dude! Where've you been?" --------------------------- Yeah. I am with you on the British learning. Both Haig and French as British commanders were appalling and that was in part because the French simply refused to accept German presence on their soil. So, the German trenches were livable but the French and British trenchs were always regarded as 'temporary' so their high commands refused any effort to make them livable as that would discourage troops from going over the top. Russian generalship and tactics were by and large even worse as were their peasant armies. Austria was little better. Germany was about the only really competent army for most of the war but had the problem that their enemies would not accept defeat and Germans could not stop and proclaim victory after monstrous losses because of the Kaiser and leaders promised Germans the Franco Prussian war part deux.
