Daily Tech News 4 August 2022

The other server - the one hosting my own blog - crashed while I was standing in line for security. Fortunately I had the audible alarm switched off.

Meanwhile:

- GitLab is planning to delete projects that are not updated for a year, which everyone agrees is insane.

- Robinhood is firing a quarter of its staff. If you have the option, take it, because the company is probably doomed anyway.

- My flight is boarding.

Hmmm. The government is intentionally making the Lake Mead water shortage look worse than it is because the downstream water rations for 2023 are based on lake water levels at the end of the 2022 "water year". If the lake levels are low enough, the downstream states will be allocated less water. But this is only based on Meade levels, so they are holding water upstream in Lake Powell and allowing Meade to drop to record lows. The media rushes out to Meade with "OMG look how low the water is! Climate change! Disaster!" Stories. Next year the lower states will have a water crisis, but Meade levels will go up thanks to our government heroes.

I liked the Edge of Night. It was based on Perry Mason (the TV show).

Was it? I only found out that Edge was more crime-oriented than the other soaps after it had left the air. Henry Slesar, who wrote a lot of scripts for Alfred Hitchcock's TV show and had some excellent short stories, was the script consultant or head writer for it.

34 This is a bit of a stretch with tortured pronoun use to boot.

EMTALA, moreover, defines the term “emergency medical condition” to include not just life-threatening conditions, but also conditions that place someone’s health “in serious jeopardy,” or that threaten “serious impairment to bodily functions” or “serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part.”
Thus, for example, if a patient’s pregnancy could damage their uterus and render them infertile, EMTALA requires hospitals to treat this patient and to provide them with an abortion if necessary — even though such an abortion would be illegal in Idaho unless the abortion is also “necessary to prevent the death of the pregnant woman.”

I'd successfully navigated the gauntlet of checklist preconditions to score a day off from School - due to illness, (Mom was an old school RN, so no bullshitting there)

So! Let's get ourselves a bowl of Cap'n Crunch or Quisp, and sit down for some quality time with the TV devoid of any distractions. In those days, only 3 channels, the rest empty. Bastards. (And 125 more empty channels on UHF)

I discovered the entire daytime TV programming was a f&@$ing wasteland of soap operas and game shows. It was my first inkling or confirmation perhaps that the female of the species was ... different.

49 I have been watching Alex Jones testify in the trial where the parents of a child that was murdered is suing him for defamation. Jones says a lot of crazy things which includes his years long obsession that Sandy Hook didn't happen. What can't I figure out how any of that is defamation against the reputation of the murdered child or the parents? He most certainly said things that the parents would find distressing but without actual malice towards them that resulted in actual damages, reputationally or financially, how does that rise to defamation? I am mightily perplexed by this case.

66 My impression of Chuck Berry and all the hippy rock and roll stars is he despised them because of the whole injustice that they eclipsed him using his music and because they sucked at playing it. One of the great videos is Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton and Keith Richard riffing on Johnny B. Goode. Richards couldn't get with the program the way Chuck wanted it. Berry was beyond exasperated by him; it is a miracle Richards didn't get smacked on the back of his head. Clapton saw all this and somehow managed to become invisible.

124 Psalm 92:1-4

It was during my many moments of grumbling that I remembered as a Christian , I am called to give thanks to the Lord,, regardless of how I feel. But that's difficult to do. So here's what I decided. Every time I was about oi say , "I don't want to go back to work," I replaced it with "I'm thankful I have work." Everytime I was about to say, "I don't want to wake up early," I replaced it with, "I'm thankful I have a bed to sleep in." Wow! What a difference that made! Throughout the week my "attitude of gratitude" changed my mindset and perspective about returning to work.

When we find ourselves complaining we can find something we are thankful for and express our gratitude to God. When we do, our lives can be transformed by living with a grateful heart.

Prayer: O, Lord, change our hearts, and help us to be more thankful to you in all situations.

154 I read MisHum's link from the ONT on bank fraudsters. Mr. Black fell for a very similar scam last week. We wound up having to shut down our checking account of 30 years(!) and open a new one, and his debit card had to also be cancelled and reissued. All revolving around a Zelle account scam. I talked to my hairdresser last week about it and she too was scammed and it involved Zelle. Be on high alert for anything involving Zelle. Luckily, we didn't lose any money and neither did my hairdresser, but it's easier to fall for these fraudsters than you might think. I shudder to think of the money they get from old people. Anyone committing these kinds of crimes deserves to be rolled in honey and dropped on red ant hills until their flesh is picked clean.
