60 I like Churchill's paintings. They are colorful without being garish and use an interesting perspective. The fact that he painted as a hobby and relief from stress makes his works even more impressive to me. I would be glad to hang this in any room.

Churchill wrote a long essay titled "Painting as a Pastime" about how he began to paint in his 40s, the need for it as an outlet, his first tentative steps and the joy he got from painting. It is worth the read.

97 I like the combination of blue, orange and gold, and how the light from the window enhances these colors. It doesn't add to them. I think it's too tightly cropped on the right tho, which is throwing off the balance a bit. He needs to show a little more of the space to counter the weight of the window. The perspective is a little off, too. But really, it's a nice piece.

127 Dude was passionate about his painting. From a 1942 speech:

"We shall paint in France, we shall paint on the seas and oceans, we shall paint with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall paint on our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall paint on the beaches, we shall paint on the landing grounds, we shall paint in the fields and in the hedgerows and in the streets, we shall paint in the hills.
We shall never stop painting, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the painting, until, in God’s good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the final rendition of the Blue Room at Lympne.”

158 An Irishman had been drinking at a pub all night. The bartender finally said that the bar is closing. So the Irishman stood up to leave and fell flat on his face. He tried to stand one more time; same result. He figured he'll crawl outside and get some fresh air and maybe that will sober him up. Once outside he stood up and fell flat on his face. So he decided to crawl the 4 blocks to his home. When he arrived at the door he stood up and again fell flat on his face. He crawled through the door and into his bedroom. When he reached his bed he tried one more time to stand up. This time he managed to pull himself upright, but he quickly fell right into bed and is sound asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow. He was awakened the next morning to his wife standing over him, shouting,

"So, you've been out drinking again!!"

"What makes you say that?" he asked, putting on an innocent look.

"The pub called -- you left your wheelchair there again."

179 I think I saw the "AOC in 2024" idea discussed briefly here yesterday...DU has a BIG discussion on the topic, and they're pretty split on the idea:

AOC is the Democrats' best shot against Trump in 2024 AOC is less of a personality and more of a movement. Yes, the smart, photogenic congresswoman is the face of the rising progressive movement, but she is also the future of the Democratic Party. She isn’t beholden to corporations, is a prodigious small-dollar fundraiser, and could out-Trump Trump like no other politician has been able to...

Love AOC and I think she has a chance of..becoming President in the future. But this next election is so important that it should be Biden if he wants to run again or someone with more experience.

Is this satire? Because it seems like a joke. Absurd is the only word that comes to mind.

I remember some folks said the same thing about Barack Obama Of course, the Republicans hate her. She is a target on FOX all of the time. That means they are threatened by her. I would prefer to see her run for Speaker when Nancy retires

180 My hope is the Sinema wants to keep her seat far into the future. She should be able to see the writing on the wall that if she doesn't follow the Mark Kelly path, she can keep the seat until she retires.

She is up for reelection in 2024, and would be facing a huge headwind with a Trump/DeSantis ticket. If she doesn't start bucking Schumer now, then she could pay a steep price.

I'm not convinced that was the only or even biggest reason they cleared the decks for Biden. Anyone who actually watched the Democrat debates and primaries knows that despite the media pimping they were a disaster. The only thing that became obvious was all of them sucked and some sucked more than others.

Biden could at least be packaged as a wise, seasoned leader even if was a lie. The rest of them where a bunch of broken toys from the island of misfits. They have no bench at all.

Someone knocks at the door, and being less than street wise I answer to see two black girls standing there all smiles. They say hi we're your date! I'm wondering what they're talking about and I think, ah.. I see the problem. You are looking for Teddy. He is next door. Teddy was a black. Then I hear knocking on Teddy's door. The next time I saw him I asked if his date found him. He says you jackals, those were hooked. Long story short I think AOC gets asked for a date so often is that people think she's a God damn hooker.

I'm sure the idea was that Republican voters would punish Trump by first voting for the Democrat and then vote for GOPe candidates after that, returning home in the normal swing of things, all based on the assumption that Trump was an anomaly and all the GOPe had to do was to outlast him once they got rid of him.

Essentially, our elites have little to no empathy for America because they see the world like Tom Friedman as flat.

420 The Trump backed candidate in WA state lost because he was going against an incumbent and the Dem won the challenger spot. They ran a mailer campaign against Kent, claiming he was a Bernie Bro from Portland. I don't remember seeing him counter that. Jamie will likely lose to the Dem. She didn't beat Kent by all that much and I'm not sure that the other Rep votes will go to her in a general.

426 I think the DeSantis thing is actually pretty significant. A Rep. is actually making a leftist suffer the consequences of their stupidity. And for one of their current hot topics too.

It needs to happen way more often.

Completely agree that it will be a BIG issue, but I would have done it, spoken softly about it, and, as he put it, let their heads explode. That would provide him with the pretext to talk more about it.

427 391 368 > Oh my...the US doesn't allow titles of nobility

None of those are titles of nobility, though. Honors, yes, but titles, no. Titles are hereditary.

As it turns out, Churchill turned down a title (which he certainly deserved, if anyone did), as that would have made his son ineligible to serve in the House of Commons.

Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at August 04, 2022 10:50 AM (bW8dp)

Not all titles of nobility were hereditary. By the era of the founders titles of nobility were generally purchaseable and a major source of revenue for states.

444 I recall a story from Churchill's biography (this may not be correct in all the details... It's been a long time since I read it).

His dad had the idea that, after Sandhurst, young Winnie would join the Duke of Stick Up His Ass's (probably not the exact title) regiment, which was the one that all the Best People joined. Winnie wanted to join the cavalry instead.

After the exam scores came out, lo and behold, Winnie had scored too low to get into the fancy regiment, but just high enough to get into the cavalry regiment.

Even at a young age, Winston Churchill was a determined man.

446 @400 I was keeping track. I'd have bet money it would not take us 400 comments to get to the syphilis.

Young Winston was not supposed to go to the Boer War. He had his mother pull some strings, and came up with a posting that was more or less a war correspondent job. One dull day with no action, he saw a vacant farm wagon and lay down to get a quick nap. While he dozed, a commando patrol came by and took him prisoner. and the exploits following on that made his reputation.

That wagon
was a Studebaker.
Four hundred one comments, then a Studebaker.

Given much of the sexual proclivity for English lords, he might not have cared. There is a curious lack of interest in how Churchill's father got syphilis in the first place but failed somehow to pass it on to his wife.

Supposedly, one of the reasons that Churchill had so much freedom to go from his subaltern post in Afghanistan to the Sudan was that Jennie had Eddie, Prince of Wales as one of her lovers. Pissed Kitchener right off.
