Good afternoon and welcome to another Saturday and another The Weekend Hobby Thread. Today's opening photo, coffee and art. What's not to like?

The Weekend Hobby Thread has been covering woodworking since its inception. I don't believe we've ever had any luthier topics. Until now................

There are as many hobbies as there are grains of sand. Our Horde has interesting and varying hobbies. Here are just a few............

When buying my wife’s diamond for her engagement ring, I was amazed that anyone could place 58 facets so precisely onto such a small stone.
I read everything I could on the subject, and eventually bought some used equipment.
I’ve been cutting gemstones now for 45 years, and still enjoy the challenge. Here’s the largest stone I’ve ever done, 1,209 carats, blue topaz:

Our jeweler friend did not provide a Nic and I wasn't given permission to use a first name. So our friend remains anonymous at this time. What an interesting hobby. I have never met anyone who cuts gemstones for a hobby. I'm lucky if I carve into a bar soap and don't end up at the local ER at Last View Memorial Hospital.

Greetings, Mis Hum!
I may take some teasing from the horde on this, but I enjoy costuming. I mostly make stuff for the kiddies, but I like to make something for myself every now and then. The attached picture is the Pip-Boy 3000 I made for a Fallout costume a couple years ago. Definitely not professional quality, but I was pleased with how it turned out considering it is made of foam, garbage, and paint. When coupled with the jumpsuit and armor, it was good enough to win the office costume contest (yeah, yeah, laugh it up). More recently I did a Furiosa costume that was pretty epic, but the mechanical arm didn't photograph as well as the Pip-Boy, such is life.--She Hobbit

I hope the Horde doesn't tease you. There is nothing wrong with your hobby. As a matter of fact I know a young man who adds lighting to various outfits and has turned it into a little money maker on Etsy.

That being said, we thank you for sharing your craft and we celebrate your win at the office.

This is my current cross stitch project. My friend--who does not craft--took my word for it. The drill doesn't help things, and both my fabric and pattern are irresponsibly squished. I'm at a boring stage (shown in second photo), so I'm procrastinating and need to get started again! I lurk and sometimes comment as FollyHerself.

Looks like your hobby room is full of goodies including a nice Milwaukee drill. Keep that thing away from Ace. Hopefully your procrastination stage will come to an end in the near future. Let us see it when it is finished. Thanks.

7 Ooh, nice cut gem! My dad made jewelry from rocks he cut and polished. He wanted to buy a faceter so he could do work like that, but never was able to justify it to himself.

I'm still slaving away on my HF antenna. I hope to be able to share a photo of it in a week or two.

8 I used to facet, but dropped the hobby about two years ago. Mostly due to aging equipment which was just to expensive to replace.

Now I'm flying drones. A friend of mine who's into the hobby upgrades whenever something new comes along, and he gave me a couple of his no longer in use drones. The big one, a Yuneec Typhoon H is a bit intimidating, but fun to fly anyway.

12 I used to read up on "Your Money or Your Life" and met some folks that had gotten out of debt and changed their lives. One was a young woman in her 20s. She wanted to travel and saved up her money. She toured the US by bicycle. She had leaned how to facet stones. She carried a bag of semi precious gems with her. She could work them up, during her travels and sell them. Sometimes she would find a jeweler that needed help and would work for awhile. I found it really interesting

19 I like the sharpie sketch in the top photo. I do a lot of quick sketches, or doodling. Keeps my hand and eye in tune, and it's a good way to pass the time when I am in a boring meeting or something.

I think I'd have to upgrade to a professional license to even do volunteer work. The FAA, in it's usual helpful way, says it could possibly be a violation of a recreational license to even 'donate' my services. Not "yeah it is", or "no it isn't". It's a maybe possibly could be.

24 My grandfather was a mining engineer. He had a collection of some very interesting "stuff." Gold, silver, various minerals and gems. I don't know exactly what happened to his collection, but I suspect a cousin might have raided it many years ago. Whatever... he had some pretty big rubies (uncut) and some gold nuggets of various sizes... including numerous "Hershey Kiss" sized. And... an awesome collection of fossils. I still have a section of a Mastodon tusk along with a partial jawbone of primitive man.

26 I have the Mavic mini.
249 grams, one less than the FAA requires a permit to fly.
Advantages: A robust 30 minutes of flight time, 4k camera, much quieter than the full size.
Drawbacks: not stable in high winds, no "headless" operation.

It's all the options on the remote that get to me. Invariable a bumped toggle switch has it doing all kinds of things I don't want it to. Thankfully it has a "Come Home" setting, that once enabled, settles the drone right down. It rises up to about forty feet, and serenely flies back to me, and lands in the neighbors pool.

31 Maritime Restoration Update:

Electrical is the focus today. I replaced an expensive but dead AGM deep cycle battery with a conventional flooded battery designed for marine applications. I added a new hi-tech charger to monitor charge levels and recharge as necessary from shore power.

It was a partial success. For the first time since the restoration began, the outboard starts instantly from battery power. Win.

The downside is, the other 12-volt items in tge boat -- running lights, cabin lights, radio, GPS, etc, appear to be unimpressed by the new juice. They're still non-functional.

Now I'm focused on the circuit breaker panel as the source of the problem but so far, I've had no success.

Limited success has been achieved but numerous problems follow.

If I finish this thing with all ten fingers intact and no concussions from the stock jumping off the lathe, I'll consider it a success.

40 I have a Phantom 3 Advanced. Hacked. 2 mile range (sometimes) and no altitude ceiling. Almost lost it to a C-130 out of Fort Knox a couple years ago.

To be fair.. he was probably below the 1500 limit here an I was above 1000. Wish I'd got a photo, but I was a bit freaked at the time.

Whatever. I hardly fly it anymore as it takes hours to charge the batteries and synching up with a smartphone and the controller is more or less fucked.

49 Selecting a location to fly is a problem where I am because I am in an urban setting, very few permissible locations to fly. It's actually illegal to fly over humans or cars or habitations, etc. illegal in all the parks, illegal to fly in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (which is enormous).
There is a free phone app called B4UFLY which will give you the status of your location via GPS, whether it has warnings or such.

My wife quilts, and has an amazing collection of machines, gadgets, and doohickeys to make it all happen. She has a "long arm", which is some kind of giant mutant room filling sewing machine which sews by itself.

Water is back on here now as well. The propane is still out, but the lines are expected to be fixed tomorrow. We've lost our TV and internet modem and a GFI in the kennel is out as well.

I'm in an urban setting too, so most of my flying, so far, is around my own house, at a local park, a drone permitted state park a few miles away, and at friends houses.

B4UFLY had most of NEPA shut down the other day for Slow Joe's aborted Wilkes Barre visit.

I run mine all the way up to 400 every time I fly it. It makes for great videos.

Batteries are a real pain...and I just retired one, as it's looking kind of explody to me. New batteries for my model are around 120 dollars...so I'm looking at printing the battering case, and repurposing much cheaper (half the price!) 4s batteries.

64 It rained here around noon, so it was a good thing I didn't wash the car this morning. Sort of. I'll get it done tomorrow even if there is rain in the forecast, so at the least the car will have a coating of wax-as-U-dry wax to protect it from bird crap and hot sun.

That's kind of my hobby, I guess: taking care of my cars.

I used to do that, but I've found that starting hobbies that require almost no investment of time or money are better. Collecting egg cartons for instance. One day the wife is harping on you about the trash piling up, the next day it's a priceless, and irreplaceable collection of poultry related Americana.

I have lots of ways to decide which old straight razor to buy. Everything important is exposed to your view, so that's easy. How do you judge what non-functioning pocket watch is worth buying?

Oh, I see the confusion. I'm turning the 4 inch stem of the three legged table, not the cabriole legs themselves.

That being said, I have actually turned cabriole legs, but only for long ones say 30", and only for shaping the round of the foot underneath the upper part of the foot that is duck foot shaped (i.e. Queen Anne legs, circa 18th century, not today).

You center both square stock at the top that abuts to the furniture you are building (e.g. low-boy), and the tow. The swing of the cabriole knee needs to clear the lathe bed, and you need to really secure the stock and turn it at low revs since the asymmetry of the rotating stock is extreme.

It's a crap shoot. Good photos are helpful in determining if the movement is complete because in most instances you're getting the bare movement without the case which has long been melted for its metal value. Sometimes you're lucky and it's all there and you just have to figure out what's wrong, take it apart completely and clean it, replace broken stuff, reassemble and oil/lubricate. The most common problem on movements from that period are broken pivots and jewels because the movements were not shock protected and were dropped a lot.

137 Lighting is the key when using magnification.. I have a couple of gooseneck mag based LEDs (from Cree/Amazon).

They work really well and are cheap. I tried a bunch of other illuminators including the Amscope ones. The only problem is remembering to turn them off because they use batteries.

A local jeweler put a battery in the watch for me, charged 45 bucks and it only lasted about three months.

I'd be better off selling it because these kinds of watches need servicing every couple of years. With a minimum of $450, it's not a watch for the average Joe. I got it in an estate or I wouldn't have it. I mean, I wouldn't buy a watch like that myself.

150 Not just mountain climbing, regular park visitors get into all sorts of trouble. I think it probably qualifies as a hobby. Getting lost, and a tragic number of people fall off cliffs at locations like Grand Canyon. The entire desert southwest or colorado plateau is a gigantic unfenced overlook. I thought I wanted to be a Park Ranger when I was a little kid, but after reading a few days of incident reports I'm not too sure about that.

Our lapidary society offers instruction and access to equipment to do gemstone faceting. I have turned down several offers to learn that craft. Cabochon cutting and flame working are more my thing

I used to have a fountain pen in school. Cheap Shaefer thing from the school store. I don't know why I kept using it. It would leak on my shirt, often. I didn't even like writing it. My reasons, if there were any, were lost to the mists of time.

So I thought I hated fountain pens, but recently got an inexpensive Lamy (Safari? Something like that), and I love it. It forces me to slow down so much that other people could actually read my handwriting.

I have a friend in the state who still facets. He owns a jewelry store, and in the normal pursuit of business, he bought out an estate's jewelry, and included in that sale was a 1+carat faceted bixbite, in standard round brilliant. It was poorly cut, for size instead of performance, and he recut it. He lost about .1 carat, but ended up with a beautiful stone still over a carat. I would not have had the balls to attempt that.

Ha. Our oldest was pretty easy and she never broke a lot of stuff. Just the regular drawing on walls, etc. Or youngest, though. Holy cow. Holes in the drywall, doors off the Hinges, the pneumatic device on the screen door constantly damaged, springs sprung, drawers leaned on, etc.

And now he's reached the age where he wants to take things apart (and of course I'm letting him within reason).

That's a No Shit Sherlock. I forgot to take my watch off when I was messing with a wall heater. Accidentally touched the side of the heater box with my watch. Blew the watch off my wrist and knocked me on my ass. I know, I should have turned the breaker off...lazy, in a hurry.

251 I have about 12, maybe 15 watches I don't wear anymore. Most are middle of the road. Some are old, maybe near 100 years old. Mechanical. Nobody in the family, son, daughters is interested in them. They're not particularly useful in the modern world with cell phones anymore.

260 I have my grandmother's wrist watch. I don't remember the brand but it has an impressive gold open work around the face. It had it worked on locally to get it going. The folks in the jewelry store were impressed by it. I bought an old cheap wrist watch that I like to wear for fun. I can't say it keeps good time but I don't care.

270 I too feel naked without a watch. I only turn my cell phone on a couple times a day to check for voice mail, so there's my reason for a watch. I've had a Timex quartz for years now, black military face. Battery gets changed yearly whether it needs it or not. Keeps better time than a Rolex I brought back from the Danang PX. Somebody made me an offer I couldn't refuse on the Rolex, and away it went. Nowadays, the Rolex case it came with is worth more than what I paid for the watch itself.

Thanks, I love a choir.

Going by memory, the man was a successful businessman in Chicago. Lawyer maybe? Investments? Regardless, their very young son died of an illness right before the Chicago fire ruined him financially. His family was understandably heartbroken and under a lot of stress so he sent his wife and four (iirc) daughters to Europe for a vacation. The ship sank, and sank very quickly. Only the mother survived. He received a telegram from her saying "Survived alone, what shall I do?"

He took a ship over to get her and the captain called him up when they were passing where his daughters had died, and when he saw the place he immediately went and wrote the poem that was later turned into the hymn.

Some watch repair guy supposedly told her she had a magnetic personality. Ha, no, a joke, actually he said that she had some kind of magnetic thing going on in her body that would cause the watches to stop. My Mom was never into spooky crap like that but I always wondered if this was a "real" thing.

1. I need to know the identity of the material I'm dealing with. Is it rare? Common? Color? Refractive Index?

2. I need to know the size and shape of the rough, which will largely determine the design best suited for that particular piece.

3. I need to see inside the rough, to see the inclusions and imperfections present. I used to dip my rough samples into Refractol...but mineral oil, and even olive oil work too. You see, these oils have similar RI's to most common gem stones, and once immersed, the stone disappears, and you can clearly see the inclusions, fractures, hazing, and silk.

Using steps 1, 2, and 3, you align the rough as best you can to the cut it's best suited for, dop it, and start cutting.

If the rough is huge, you might use a trim saw to salvage some facetable material first.

294 My hobby is rather common place. I build models. Mainly armor, occasional aircraft, branching out into figures. Faces are hard to paint! My wife's hobby is unusual (at least to me) she does "junk journals". To me it's scrap booking with no rules. She's probably done over 50 journals. Most have a theme, several have been gifts and she sold 6 commissioned journals. I've learned several terms, such as ephemera. Which in this case means collecting a lot of paper of various sorts, old books, random objects and specifically feed bags from the side of the road- we pick up all bags but only paper are useful, plastic go in recycling.
