The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“After the police left, girls kept coming in, and I said let’s open. So we opened.” Cadillac Lounge owner Dick Shappy

Quote II

“Harvard wants their endowment tax cut. I have a better idea. Let’s raise it. Universities have become woke hedge funds with students’ and parents’ money.”Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO)

Quote III

“Because the second things get intense, the second the other side really unleashes and starts yelling so loudly that you can’t think clearly, I want a leader who can still think clearly.”Tucker Carlson

Quote IV

As I’ve told people, you’re gonna call Elvis the King? The King in my song has a thorny crown. And only Jesus had a thorny crown. I think I was very clear about that. There’s a lot of reasons why I don’t turn this into a board game. Because it’s not. It’s an impressionistic piece.” Musician Don McClean

Another day, another incompetent bureaurcrat.

Florida child welfare agency said the kids were doing fine. Actually, they were dead

On April 13, 2022, at exactly 6:09 p.m., a child welfare investigator assigned to the case of Miami mother Odette Joassaint entered a benign-sounding note into the Florida Department of Children and Families’ computer system.

“She reports that everything is fine.”

The “she” referred to Joassaint, 41, a mother of three who had been entangled with the department for years due to persistent reports of domestic violence and poor parenting.

Of Joassaint’s 3-year-old son, Jeffry, the investigator offered this reassuring image: “He likes to play, laugh, and grab things.” Referring to Jeffry’s older sister, 6-year-old Laura, the narrative read: “She is a quiet child [who] is well-behaved.”

Actually, as of the day before, Joassaint had been in the Miami-Dade County Jail and Laura and Jeffry were in the morgue. Police had arrived at the mother’s home on Northeast 75th Street to find the children hogtied and strangled. Their mother told officers the children were better off that way.

What a gushing piece of journalism. However, will this SUV tow an enclosed trailer with a couple of snowmobiles or UTVs while on vacation in Montana?

Few automakers have committed more to the transition from internal combustion to all-electric vehicles than General Motors. And it’s rapidly ramping up its product rollout with the debut of the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV.

The battery-powered version of the familiar Blazer SUV has some unusual features that, Chevy hopes, will help it appeal to both performance and mainstream buyers.

While it got off to a slow start, GM is rapidly accelerating the rollout of its battery-electric lineup. We’ve gotten to see products as diverse as the big GMC Hummer EV pickup and the Cadillac Lyriq SUV over the last 12 months. Now, the automaker is taking aim at the heart of the automotive market with the debut of the Chevrolet Blazer EV.

If the name is familiar to you, no surprise there — the gas-powered Blazer is one of the most popular models in the midsize SUV market. It’s also no surprise GM decided to retain that badge as it shifts from internal combustion to battery propulsion.

Some people are easy to please. Including our Genius Award Winner.

During a police standoff in North Providence, Rhode Island on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, the shooting suspect and his spouse got three hot wieners.

According to the Providence Journal, a woman named Rachel Lombardi was assaulted in her home by an acquaintance. The police say the fight was allegedly caused by a "drug incident," although it's unclear whether that's true, or an assumption based on the fact that one of the suspects was charged with cocaine possession back in May. Anyway, Lombardi's husband, Gino Rotundo, returned home, and called up the alleged assaulting acquaintance, asking him to come back to the house that afternoon so they could talk it out.

Her lungs remain clear, her main issues have been fatigue (as in she has been sleeping most of the day since she got sick), pain, headaches, brain fog and nausea. I believe DOCTOR Jill is moonlighting as Sarah. I mean, she really needs some money. The Big Guy gets the millions in payoffs and kickbacks. Do you think Joe is going to give his wife any of it to spend on herself? Joe must be a penny-pincher like all the other Leftists. So, Jill takes the few dollars a month Joe gives her, and saves-up for months to buy a cheap floral-print dress on sale at WalMart. Sad! Jill, I know you're reading this - end the Sarah charade and demand Joe give you a decent allowance!

50 “Because the second things get intense, the second the other side really unleashes and starts yelling so loudly that you can’t think clearly, I want a leader who can still think clearly.”Tucker Carlson

There is a corollary to this ... beware the folks that day in, day out, spout "back the blue" or "love it or leave it" or "no justice, no peace". Because they're not thinking either. They're just spouting ideology - no different than "when Uncle Sam calls, you answer". No, sometimes, hanging the phone up on Uncle Sam is your best play. Sometimes backing the blue is a losing move.

And sometimes, "no justice, no peace" just means you burn your own town in a really stupid display of collective ignorance. "Backing the blue" that watch it all happen isn't a bit smarter. In both cases - just decades hammered in ideology. And make no mistake, that's going to be the summary of this last decade. Old ideologies, long past their expiration date, pushed to their illogical conclusions, by a ruling class too old to care long term.

58 Tucker is utterly lost with his commentary about Republicans that are "scared" of the NY Times. I find his opinion to be propaganda (purposeful or no) that actually helps keep our side locked in a box.

Republicans like Nikki Haley and Mitt Romney etc are - at *best* - working directly for Democrats/Uniparty. If they weren't, they would sometimes fall down on our side, if only by accident. Or because there was an issue they just cared too much about. It's not like they don't tell you all about their amazing principals constantly.

But most of all, if they were *scared*, Trump would have made them NOT scared, by taking all possible heat. He was THE lightning rod. He said "follow me and I'll show you the way. You don't have to do anything, just follow me and we will make the other side look like fools, and grow a movement so large they can't possibly stop us". They told him to stick it up his ass.

Its not logical to have any local police force answer to a Federal politician. Yet, the Capitol Police answer to the Speaker of the House.

Today was a mild shot across the bow, that the Speaker - the mildly senile Nancy Pelosi herself - didn't like the optics of those in her own party making a scene.

The Capitol Police, like the good civil servants with guns they are, behaved accordingly. Lets give 'em all MRAPs.

Did you have a local tour guide? That was half the fun. 30-something fluent in English, scuba instructor and IT guy who grew up there. We drove by his parents' home - like many, there was a tent in the walled yard out back (pretty modern house in front) - he explained his dad's generation still had to spend time in tents, practice some old customs.

His father as a young man had ridden as an extra in the movie, as did all the village men, all Howeitat. *Their* fathers had ridden with Lawrence to take Aqaba. The movie "Zulu" has some of the same thing going on - direct descendants of the actual people playing parts in the movie. Always loved that.

Something like that. Wasn't always the case. Famous recording of Yuri Levitan announcing the German invasion in '41 starts with some other melody.

Still remember watching (on TV) Van Cliburn play "Moscow Nights" on the piano in the East Room of the WH during Gorby's first DC visit. Raisa was mouthing the lyrics. Glad you posted this MH, I was going to comment on Harvard's endowment fund in tonight's ONT.

After listening to this tech chip bill, where we are going further into debt, 52 billion. so America can bring back the semiconductor business from China, OK noble cause.

But one of the big beneficiaries is Harvard, with an endowment of how much? Over 53.2 billion. Seems like they have enough to fund this bill and spread the wealth out, you know to better America.

The only thing I can play on piano is the peanuts theme. I had a piano at the old house, but I got rid of it before the move. Mrs B pretty much concluded that playing the peanuts theme a few times during the holidays wasn't worth the room it took up, or the effort to move it to the new house. Even though I'm a guitar player, it bummed me out having to lose the piano. I felt somewhat less...cultured. lol

432 Kindltot I spent exactly two (very nice) days in Uruguay, Montevideo, back in the 80s. Summer (there), beautiful. One beach area in eastern part of town reminded me a lot of La Jolla Shores. Took the aliscafo from B.A. Then went by bus north to Brazil, through ranch country. As you said, a very agricultural place. Beef, of course, was fantastic and cheap (as in Argentina at the time - both places it helped that US dollar was incredibly strong).

Montevideo was very nice, but very sleepy, and a bit worn on the edges. But I definitely was thinking of the incredible good fortune of the Graf Spee crewmen who were interned there in WWII - probably a place beyond their dreams in many ways. (a few made their way across the river to B.A., and when I visited a few of those were still working at the German restaurant ABC, on Calle Lavalle).

Oh, been meaning to mention. If you remember last week or the week before, I was in need of a new belt for an air compressor. It was indeed a 49" J6, which fit like a charm.

Now, putting the new one on, I discovered something. That thing was heavy. Then I realized I hadn't drained it in a while. Over 5 gallons of water in the tank. Drained the other two, but it didn't have that much in it.

And then I rediscovered a little tricky business. I had replaced the motor on the thing many moons ago, Grainger 3HP 3450 RPM. All they had was the standard NEMA frame, which was slotted. The mounting plate was slotted holes as well. So slot on slot. Not too good.

Makes alignment tricky. First time, it would throw the new belt. So I had to carefully, carefully eyeball things and using two arms and a foot, get the thing just right and tighten it snug.

I got it, but it could be just half a smidge tighter. Pump turns at 850 RPM. Thing is rated for 1050 RPM max, but 850 pumps just fine for that class.

Nah. Both USSA and ASA offer Bareboat Charters for qualified skippers and crews, sailing the Dalmatian Coast. Price includes airfare to get to the loc al port of embarkation, without the whole sex-change of a Trans Atlantic Crossing. (swidt?)

Same for sailing other exotic seas, such as those off of Thailand. Truly gorgeous, looking at the pics. But I'd no more travel to Thailand than volunteer for any Boy Scout of Big Brother kind of thing. Same undertone of questionable connotations, and I ain't got time for that.

64 y/o olde fart w/o kids, is exactly in the accusatory bullseye. And so, I don't venture anywhere near such voluntary self-targeting zones.

I've been saying for 15 years that I'm gonna get me a good 10HP class 2-stage compressor, 3-phase of course. I haven't yet.

These operate in the 150 - 175 psi range. Only problem is you have to regulate it down to run air tools. But that gives more than enough pressure. Tires, especially tuck tires, pump up real fast at that pressure.

You will ruin an air tool, like an impact wrench running it straight off the output. Depending on the quality. In the meantime, you'll overtighten the shit out of shit before you know it.

Some of these tire shops, in the old days, were known to do that. Some idiot tightens up your lug nuts with an impact wrench rated for 90 psi input running of the 2-stage up to 175 psi.

494 Some of these tire shops, in the old days, were known to do that. Some idiot tightens up your lug nuts with an impact wrench rated for 90 psi input running of the 2-stage up to 175 psi.
Posted by: publius

The tire monkeys also had a tendency to keep their tools set at very high torques. I've seen tools set at 150 ft-lbs.

That of course makes quick work for them, but makes life a bit difficult for the poor guy on the side of the road with a flat tire.

A guy running one of those tire places told me what he had to do one time. Each station had its own air feed, which tee'd off to a straight output, and a regulator. You ran the air tools of the regulated output, and then had the straight, full pressure if you needed it.

He said nope, didn't work. They'd always run the air tools off the full pressure. Nothing wrong with that once in a blue moon for breaking something loose.

So, he put a big-ass regulator on the whole output right on the main compressor. Can't have nice things with idiots.

You use a shit compressor and you'll be there forever glass beading a set of engine cases, and heads. I mean it suuuucks.

503 Sharkman. If you're going to sail passages, get a bit, honkin' big, long, sailboat.

Hull speed is a mathematical derivative of the length of the waterline. Sail plan and Sail area are important, but less important, than the wetted waterline and underhull efficeincy.

Racing sailboats might GO faster, but you'll be beat half to death upon your arrival. A good cruising sloop or ketch, well, you might get there two days later. But you'll get there sans the trauma, drama and need to recover, quite so much as the go fasties.

One of those tire places warped the rotors on a neighbor's care one time. What the idiot did was just unblanced tightening. He put the wheel on, then spun the lug nuts on a few turns by hand.

He then took his impact wrench, and torqued the first nut down, all the way, letting the thing hammer. Without tightening up the other four. That's how you warp a rotor.

I knew from a young age how to properly tighten a wheel, or something similar. You spin the nuts down snug. Then you take you air wrench and carefully tighten them in a sequence, opposite to opposite, basically. And you take two passes to do that.

You wouldn't believe the people that don't know that.

507 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth[a] and no plant had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a BIRTHING PERSON from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought them/it (Preferred pronoun of Eve ) to the man.

Yeah, glass beading or just plain sandblasting. I've got two single state compressors in parallel. 3HP. And I've got a little sandblaster.

The two of things running together can't keep up with that sandblaster. It's off and on.

Now, I've got a little cut-off tool, air powered, 20,000 RPM. That thing will tax the limits of both of them running together.

It's funny. WIth that thing going wide open, one end will get hot, and the other end cold. The cold end in the adiabatic expansion of the compressed air doing work. The hot end is the bearing and the input of the hot compressed air coming off the compressors.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at July 20, 2022 02:25 AM (Mzdiz)

I learned that sequence on a 4 way crossed manual lug wrench.

512 Berserker. I just helped with a complete brake system purge/change.

Local KTM 1290, had sat through covid in a local garage. In that time, the DOT3 brake and clutch lines, resivours and fluids had all gone Dark Honey in color, and didn't brake or clutch worth a damn. Water absorbtion on all fronts.

Using a power flush pressure pistol, and DOT5 fluids, everything was purged, flushed, purged and flushed again. And then the nipples locked down good and tight, as required.

Everything working as it should. Next steps? Tackling about 100 points of local salt-air corrosion. Those get treated or fixed, and this bike is going on the market. One down. Two to go.

I've got a 3/4" impact wrench. That thing will flow too much. The compressors can keep up with it, but I found a 3/8" air hose of any length cannot. Too much pressure drop, and the torque just drops too much.

With impact wrenches, it's a burst thing really. You've got a big enough tank, it can handle the surge to break something loose at full torque, provided the hoses and lines are big enough.

So, I rigged me a 1/2" air hose, with full 1/2" quick-connect couplers. I learned something. Trying to connect a 1/2" coupler at full pressure (120 psi) is a lot more difficult than the 1/4" quick couplers.

So, I had to put a valve on it. Cut that off, and connect the hoses, then turn the valve on.

Speaking of quick couplers. There are three major common types, "automative", "industrial", and "ARO". Also, known as A, B, and C, but which one is which, I can't remember.

My father, back in the '70s when he first got a compressor, used the "industrial" type, which I want to say is type "C". And so that's what I've used ever since.

A neighbor used the automotive type. So, we can't use each other's air tools. Which might be a good thing. You need to make adapters, which drop pressure even further.
