The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"Things are going to break. We have an aging fleet that’s being run harder than it’s ever been run." Executive director of Texas Competitive Power Advocates Michele Richmond

Quote II

“You’re so handcuffed to do any work on these houses that a lot of these houses just sit there and crumble. Nobody wants to work on them because there’s not enough money to do the work and to turn a profit, so they just sit there.” John Denke, HBSS Homes Manager

Quote III

“Today is a victory for freedom of speech and religious beliefs. Flight attendants should have a voice and nobody should be able to retaliate against a flight attendant for engaging in protected speech against her union,Charlene Carter

Quote IV

“The real hero of the day is the citizen that was lawfully carrying a firearm in that food court and was able to stop the shooter almost as soon as he began,” Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison

Quote V

We need sensible gun laws, not vigilante safety nets. Kris Brown, President of Brady United.org

We do have sensible gun laws. What you are calling for is elimination of all guns. Be honest you self-centered twat. There are also sensible Homicide laws on the books. That doesn't seem to be a deterrent. Perhaps a quick application of the death penalty.

Why do people detest politicians? This could be one of many reasons.

Tory MPs vote confidence in Boris Johnson's government - 10 days after ousting him

Conservatives united around the ousted PM after a bitter five-hour debate in which he was accused of presiding over corruption and a tolerance of sexual assault

Tory MPs tonight passed a motion of confidence in Boris Johnson’s government - 10 days after ousting him.

Shameless Conservatives united around the PM after a bitter five-hour debate - that heard claims of corruption and tolerance of sexual assault in government.

Of course they did. Federal prosecutors drop charges against Colbert team members arrested at Capitol

Federal prosecutors have declined to prosecute members of a production team associated with Stephen Colbert's late-night comedy show who were arrested last month on Capitol Hill.

A production team involved with The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, which airs on CBS, had been charged with unlawful entry had a court date set for this week after being arrested by Capitol Police while filming segments for cigar-smoking puppet Triumph the Insult Comic Dog handled by comedian Robert Smigel.

As I prepare this ONT I am seething with spite for Uncle Sam and his cronies.

Last week The ONT covered the US Armed forces forcing normal service members to shower with those who suffer mental illness. Now the Navy wants to shove vegan shit down their sailor's throats.

The congressional legislation, H.R. 7900, establishes a “Pilot Program on Research and Development of Plant-based Protein for the Navy.”

The bill stipulates that by March 1st, 2023, the Secretary of the Navy “shall establish and carry out a pilot program to offer plant-based protein options at forward operating bases for consumption by members of the Navy.” Plant-based protein options are defined as “edible vegan or vegetarian meat alternative products made using plant and other non-livestock-based proteins,” according to the bill.

I've never met Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI). But, I've always considered her a vile, hateful and downright Anti-Semitic. This accusation should come as no surprise.

Two men who held key positions at nonprofit groups that were found liable in a Hamas terror financing scheme helped organize campaign fundraising events for Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) in 2018.

The men, who organized events that were paid for by Tlaib's campaign, were associated with a network of nonprofit groups that were found liable by a federal jury in 2004 for financing the terrorist slaying of an American teenager, David Boim, at a bus stop in the West Bank in 1996. A federal judge ordered the three groups to pay Boim's parents a $156 million judgment for funding Hamas, a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization.

Mass Graves of 8,000 Concentration Camp Victims Discovered in Polish Forest

According to reports, around 17 tons of ashes were found in the two pits, which measure approximately 10 feet deep. The discovery was made by archaeologists and anthropologists with the IPN in Iłowo-Osada, in the Białuty Forest. Historians and experts have long known that the wooded area was the final resting place for many Polish victims of the German Army, but the exact location of the graves wasn’t known until now.

The institute’s archaeologists located traces of clothing, buttons and other items in the graves. Nothing of value was found, indicating the bodies were likely robbed before they were burned.

The Fabulous and I have a running joke. The only reason she married me was to shorten her last name. Glad she didn't read this: No woman should be changing her name after marriage in 2022

Jennifer Lopez has changed her last name following her wedding to Ben Affleck, apparently – and I am conflicted.

The singer, actress and all-round iconic goddess announced the change in the latest edition of her “On The JLo” newsletter, sent out to subscribers on Sunday (17 July).

“We did it. Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years patient,” she said, revealing that the couple had married in Las Vegas. “We barely made it to the little white wedding chapel by midnight.”

I can’t help feeling a pang of conflict after hearing the news, because I’ve been clinging to the hope that marriage is becoming more progressive – at least where women are concerned. And I’m not alone.

According to recent data, the number of women choosing to include their birth names alongside their spouse’s surname after getting married is rising. The Deed Poll Office, a law firm that specialises in name changes, has released statistics showing that requests from newlyweds to keep their maiden names alongside their spouse’s surname (rather than change it completely) rose by 30 per cent between 2020 and 2021.

Conflicted? Oh get a grip Karen.

Do Black lives really matter? One black woman says "No."

Black Lives Matter activists attempted to turn a justified killing by police officers into a rallying cry for radical leftists, but one woman is speaking out against their lies.

According to Fox News, Arabella Foss-Yarbrough said a black man named Andrew “Tekle” Sundberg shot up her apartment in Minneapolis with her and her two children inside last Thursday night.

Minneapolis police reportedly responded to the attack and killed Sundberg. Foss-Yarborough said her family was nearly injured or killed during the attack, and she felt the police were justified in killing him to protect her family.

The rise and fall of the mobile home.

A recurring theme of this newsletter is the failure of prefabrication (building homes in factories instead of on-site) to revolutionize the housing industry. While it’s possible to build a successful construction business with prefabrication, it hasn’t swept away the old methods of building - building a home on-site remains the most common (and in most cases, the cheapest) way of building a house in the US. (Outside the US, prefabrication is often more popular, but it’s still not a low-cost method of building.) No one has yet managed to do for housing what Ford did for cars, or what Corning did for lightbulbs, or what Arkwright, Hargreaves, and Crompton did for cotton thread.

In a just and fair world, this living, breathing, walking piece of shit would face some type of severe penalty.

Four years before the world battled the rampant peril of COVID-19, officials at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases expressed concerns over what they called “gain-of-function” research in China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology, according to documents received by Judicial Watch in response to a Freedom of Information Act request.

The agency is headed by Dr. Anthony Fauci, who has steadfastly denied that any “gain-of-function” research was supported by the agency. Gain-of-function research takes place when scientists take a virus that exists in nature and make it more powerful.

“The incredible disclosure of an FBI inquiry shows that Fauci and others involved in this scandal were being dishonest in dismissing the seriousness of questions about their cover-up of their funding of dangerous gain-of-function research in China,” Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said, according to Judicial Watch.

I barely know who she is. I really don't care who she is. But it is funny. Kylie Jenner full time media whore is also a climate criminal.

Kylie Jenner Has Been Called A “Full Time Climate Criminal” After Her Private Jet Was Exposed For Taking Three Minute Flights
Records show that Kylie’s jet recently took a three-minute flight, which would have only been a 40-minute drive.

She's a small time criminal compared to this pompous asshole.

The ONT Musical Interlude & Roasted Sweet Corn Emporium

You should never meet your heroes. Or give them gifts, especially grumpy old rocker David Crosby.

Classic rocker David Crosby kicked a virtual hornets’ nest on Saturday when he complained about the quality of a portrait a fan shared on Twitter, calling it the “weirdest” painting of himself that he had ever seen.

Crosby — formerly of the folk rock group Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young — took things a step further, telling the artist not to give up his day job for a career in art.

“Hi @thedavidcrosby hope you are keeping well. Did a picture of you…. Thanks for the music,” the artist captioned his work.

You have ONE menu. Period. Often only one main course available... Its not like a F'n Restaurant where you get a choice... and if you don't like it can order out.

Lets hear it for making the supply chain for ships even MORE complicated, and thus subject to failure.

Has the owner been asked what incidents of gun violence perpetrated by lawful gun owners on the properties spurred them to make that policy?

Will the owner seek to have the police press charges against the gun owner who stopped the violence by killing the perp?

Will this incident cause you, the property owner, to change the no-guns policy?

If you won't change it, what means will you take to enforce the policy?

103 A measure will be on the Oregon ballot in November that would ban the sale of high-capacity magazines that are over 10 rounds and would require gun buyers to get a state permit.

Of course, if the bill passes, it will probably take years to get a permit - after all, the State of Oregon government has many demands placed on it, so they just won't have the money to adequately staff the gun permit office.

I'm actually quite happy about this - there is an excellent chance that the Republicans will be able to elect a governor in Oregon this year. The Democratic candidate is a parody of an obnoxious Portland leftist, the Republican is a moderate suburbanite, but there is also a well-funded rural conservative Democrat running as an independent. Judging from the frenetic attacks on the conservative Democrat by the establishment media, the Democratic establishment is clearly worried that the rural conservative will take more votes from the Ds than the Rs.

Nothing like an oppressive gun control measure to boost rural turnout...

Some things we agreed on:
there is a Uniparty out to screw the populace (he had not heard the term before and liked it.)
the police need to be de-militarized
we're not voting our way out of anything.

Other than that we disagreed or only partially could compromise on everything else.
One thing I hope he thinks about was my contention that even if you are not actively involved in something that happens in your society (civil rights, feminism, 60's radicalism, etc.), it still affects you b/c it changes the society you have to live in.

It was a good talk, all things considered.

165 I can understand wanting to keep your name for professional or familial reasons. I don't really understand getting super militant about it either way. It's going to be a man's name anyway, whether it's your husband's or your father's (or your grandfather's, if you want your mothers maiden name). Do whatever works for you.

(I always figured I'd take my future husband's name for two reasons: (1) I was sick of being in the bottom of the alphabet and (2) I don't like the letter U. Luckily, my husband was a significant jump up in the alphabet with no U's. Falling in love with a guy named Ulster or Zurowski or something would have meant facing a difficult question.)

199 California has been a pioneer in pushing for rooftop solar power, building up the largest solar market in the U.S. More than 20 years and 1.3 million rooftops later, the bill is coming due.

Beginning in 2006, the state, focused on how to incentivize people to take up solar power, showered subsidies on homeowners who installed photovoltaic panels but had no comprehensive plan to dispose of them. Now, panels purchased under those programs are nearing the end of their typical 25-to-30-year life cycle.

Yeah, the cycles of pressurizing and depressurizing was far greater than planned. So the aircraft skin flexed and flexed more each time. So fatigue cracks formed that passengers boarding that day saw. But the plane took off.

And the whole upper front third of the fuselage parted in mid-flight.

222 Major U.S. chip firms on Monday were coming around to support a package of chip industry subsidies despite earlier concerns that legislation awaiting a vote in the Senate disproportionately benefits manufacturers like Intel Corp (INTC.O).

But a rift had emerged last week within the chip industry itself, with some players concerned the final language of the legislation would provide disproportionate support to manufacturers like Intel while doing little to support chip designers like Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD.O), Qualcomm Inc (QCOM.O) and Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O).

AMD spun off Global Foundries, while Qualcomm and Nvidia have never had a foundry. Intel has foundries in the US and has plans to build additional foundries in Ohis and the EU, while buying Global Foundries.

227 JAL 747.

Years before had suffered a tail strike. There was a crack in the aft pressure bulkhead. It was supposedly repaired correctly so it flew again.

Until the bulkhead failed, the depressurization was so strong it ripped more than 60% of the vertical fin away plus destroyed the hydraulics.

After the crash it was discovered that the patch had only one row of rivets instead of the required two rows. So it failed, metal fatigue. And a few hundred Japanese died.

Aloha Air 737 that unzipped in flight

Posted by: Anna Puma at July 18, 2022 10:50 PM (tEMfC)

Metal fatigue from depressurization/repressurization cycles - many per day on the short hops between islands. Short hops but still climbing to 10,000 feet or higher, resulting in a several psi cabin pressure reduction. IIRC, structural inspections were done based on flight hours, not flights. Boeing designed the 737 assuming a lot fewer depress/repress cycles per flight hour than Aloha was flying.

Coal plants have resiliency built into the pile of coal. Most important, they operate 24/7 and are far better able to handle variations in demand whereas solar supplies whatever it does while the sun is up regardless of demand.

Yes they were using an unauthorized method to remove the whole engine. But what McDonnell-Douglas failed to design for was the whole engine with pylon rotating up and over the wing cutting wires and lines, thus destroying critical components that would have told the pilots an engine had ripped off, pilots thought it was merely an engine failure.

297 There is also either an Air Disaster or MayDay episode on the O'Hare crash. Also based on the NTSB findings.

But the engine that broke away cut hydraulic lines which meant that wing's slats and flaps were affected. Also some of the pilot's instruments were powered by that engine.

Of course one of the kickers is, a pilot in a DC-10 can't look out to see his engines.

Same here. I rather do road trips. Can smoke, stop when I want, etc. My trip to texas is around 1500 miles, maybe 1550. Takes 24 hours straight through with all the stops, breaks, etc. It mildly sucks, but you would probably tie up 12 hours just to fly.

Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at July 18, 2022 11:28 PM (VwHCD)

304 Maybe a dumb question, but would it have helped if the pilots had known the engine had ripped off?
Posted by: EdmundBurkesShade at July 18, 2022 11:19 PM

If they could mentally process it in time, yes.
The pilot executed the "engine out" procedure, which called for them to go to a lower thrust level than full takeoff. However, with the engine ripping off part of the wing, that wing stalled because of the damage and they went into an unrecoverable low altitude spin.

305 coal is so bad that we MUST dig it all up and burn it .. to save the planet.

The irony of the Green Economy. Because we were never going to use thermals again, they forbid the construction of new gas pipelines, closed down nuclear power plants and told coal producers that they need not explore or invest in "compliant coal".

The idea that they can virtue signal and import their "dirty" energy came to an end when the dirty producers stop selling. Since it takes 20 years to build a nuke, that is out. Since Natgas isn't available where the energy needs to be created (thanks to ending pipelines), can't build CCGT plants. Because "compliant coal" producers didn't expand there is no compliant coal. But it is easy to dig up inefficient but cheap bituminous coal and burn that.

In search of the perfect they ended up with the worst.

Internationally you might need one for the country to which you're flying. Up until last month you needed a negative test to return to the US but that's no longer operative.

324 As we have some of the largest coal reserves in the world if we were a serious country we'd also have the world's largest number of coal plants, and with a growing population be building them at an astronomical rate.

Why? There is more shale oil and gas than can ever be used and it doesn't require leveling mountains and creating tailings risks.

The benefits of coal is resiliency (very important) and it is cheap. I would prefer nukes as baseline power and use the surplus to generate hydrogen, desalinate water, generate crypto, or fill reservoirs as batteries for peak load. Coal lets us better survive supply-chain disruptions (not as well as nukes).

Nat gas is clean and can be spun up and down quickly to handle the dynamics in power usage. Its clean and can be piped wherever NIMBYs will allow it. With coal, you have barges, trains and worst case, trucks to move it.

Show up 2+ hours before your domestic flight, 3+ hours before international, and expect to need all of that time just to make it to the gate in time to board. Rental cars are a mess. Customs is a mess.

And that's if your flight doesn't get cancelled or rescheduled due to lack of crew.

Angle grinder will get the bolts so hot, they will melt through the plastic. I am guessing they are 1/4" or 5/16" bolts. Those are weak enough that you ought to be able to twist them right off if you can get a good grip on the head and the nut.

361 The modern trend is to build the power station at the minehead. Ship the power, not the coal.

Mostly because electric powered mining is far more powerful than diesel powered. So mining operations either need to route in lots of power, or generate it themselves on site. I guess the trick is being able to bring in enough water to run the coolers.

Dittos with fracking. Using electrical power to run the fracking pumps allows them far more impulse power than diesel generation - and do to the hundreds of thousands of gallons of water, need to be proximate to a reliable water source.

It was that long ago, that people wearing sweatsuits and even P.J.s started to *not* be uncommon sights when flying. But, such sights were then rare indeed, when aboard ship.

Not so much anymore. Sail Carnival, and you'd swear that they're selling the travel packages at Wal-Mart. Go upscale a bit on the cruise lines (Royal Caribbean, Norwegian or above).. and at least the P.J.s become seldom seen. But not the sweatsuits. High end designer ones all the way down to Adibas.*

You haven't seen Qatar Airlines or Emirates then. The luxury is obscene. I'm surprised they haven't somehow managed to work in lap swimming or a hot tub into the individual first class quarters.

Domestic first class in a one-aisle plane is a modest improvement over coach.

International business class on a top Asian carrier's two-aisle jet is a world apart from coach. On the other hand, it will cost 5-8 times the comparable coach fare.

See the Fleet Manager, if for a Ford, look at the "XL" series (not XLT or above) Last I saw, you could still get wind up windows, AM/FM only, sometimes, manual transmissions and not even cruise control. Yep, vinyl seats and rubber floors are part of the bargain.

I don't know the designation for the similar GM or Dodge products, but they make 'em, too. In the industry, they're called "white trucks", 'cause so many of 'em are. Oh, and you'll also find that you have a severely limited number of choices IN color. Ford is usually white, coca-cola red, some kind of forestry puke-green, and that's about it. I've seen GM offerings in a kind of desert tan though. My knowledge is a decade out of date, so I don't know what today's offerings may be.

Whole thing has been a disaster since the word go. First they sent the Building permit to the wrong place... and I had to track it down. Then they put the panels on but 2 out of 20 accumulators were not the same spec, so could not provision it.
Then got those two fixed, but the techs they sent out were not authorized to provision the system.
Then... senior guy came out on day I was supposed to get the final inspection by the city... and oooopsssieeee.... they needed to put a smaller breaker in my main panel according to the permit.... so canxd because it would not pass inspection.

Then was told they would be here last friday... no show. No call.

Now.... my Emergency back up power does not work.... I'm a retired US Navy NCO... ELECTRONICS TECH... I have forgotten more about power, than they know...

The majors sell "work trucks" equipped that way. Rubber floor mats, maybe manual windows, too.

Check the big auction houses like Ritchie or Michener Allen, and gov't surplus sites. such trucks usually were sold to fleets. Get one that has been well cared for, and it could be a sweet deal.

I have a 1988 Chevy 3/4 ton long bed. Rubber mats, manual windows, no air, AM radio. It was a ranger truck at Waterton National Park in southernmost Alberta. Paid $600 in a sealed bid sale. Almost correct. The MD-80 is to a DC-9 what a Shelby Cobra is to a base, 6 cyl. Mustang. Same comparison 'tween the MD-11 and the DC-10.

Wholly re-engineered airframes, nose to tail. Stretched fuselages, more powerful High-Bypass fanjet engines, far more modern electronics, far greater fuel economies.

Some parts such as cabin windows and cockpit windows might have been interchangeable between a DC and it's MD successor. Maybe a few hydraulic bits, some structural members. Mostly though, they don't interchange.

438 I took on the task as a learning adventure ... all installed "super clean" ... but then I kept getting ground faults .. Schneider Electric guys ran me through some tests, in the end they found one charge controller was bad .. after the replacement, all has been fine.

imo they were negligent in sending me a bad product, and owed me for all the extra effort. but at least they replaced it.

447 the mall killer had a "right to kill" ... how dare a shooter kill him before he murdered a dozen more.

there is probably no way that is a wrongful death, and I doubt the mall owner has any grounds to sue the hero shooter for saving lives that the mall owner failed to protect -- after he allowed a long gun shooter in to his controlled mall to murder shoppers under his "no gun" dictate.

454 There was the day, last Friday, on my usual drive to my job, where I usually passed along Victory Blvd. a homeless guy in a wheelchair encamped by the Salvation Army Valley Center.
He had taken up residence along a wall near the parking lot exit. He had been there for about a year. He was a former client of my center from that year 2021?

But on this day, as I approached early in the morning, I saw a lone LAPD unit, yellow tape, boxing off his area, and the now familiar low black screens which conveys "we will not let you not see death". "What is up with that anyway?

Why the putting up of tarps? Why the video "glazing out "

Media thinks it is now "Not right" to show us death?

Are they our masters now to give us what they think is appropriate for us to see in our day to day and THEY choose what is appropriate.

Ya see where I'm going with this...

Before the cruise ended? The metal cruise I was on drank the ship dry before it left the frigging port and made it out to sea. We got delayed leaving because they had to resupply before the cruise even started. They sell more booze in 4 days than they do in 6 weeks of normal cruises. It utterly smashed any booze records.

Progs rant that this isn't a Christian nation. Constitutionally, that's correct. Politically, however, we're still largely a nation of Christians. If progs want to purge the public sphere of any morals based on religious sentiments, they can go ahead and make that clear and see where it gets them come election time.

470 What's horrific about the JAL blown aft bulkhead crash.

The pilot and co-pilot worked heroic miracles in keeping the plane in flight as long as they did. If any crew could've landed her successfully, they were that crew.

Sadly, the plane crashed. Sadly, every passenger experienced every motion of the plane as the Flight Deck Officers did their best to save the doomed plane.

Sadlier, the Flight Deck Crew didn't even have the controls authority to have kamakazied into Fuji itself, as a Death with Honor. But, their Honor was assured. They flied and fought to the bitter end. And that's all that one can ask.

They died honorable deaths, and to the Japanese, that is EVERYTHING.
