Producer Price Index Shoots Up a Near-Record 11.3% in June, Smashing "Expectations"

Weird how the Democrat Mega Donors known as Wall Streeters are always "expecting" good economic news under Democrats and bad economic news under Republican presidents.

This is the producers price index, a companion measure to the consumer price index which was reported at its highest rate of increase since 1981 yesterday. The CPI measures changes in the price consumers pay, and the PPI measures changes in the price producers report receiving for the goods.

It doesn't track perfectly with CPI because a lot -- a lot -- of goods Americans buy are made outside the US now, thanks to our Globalist Davoisie Overlords who want us to Eat the Bugs.

"Unexpectedly," these Experts and Masters of the Universe were wrong again.

Inflation hit hard at the wholesale level in June, as producer prices surged a near-record amount from a year ago due to a big jump in energy costs, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Thursday.

The producer price index, a measure of the prices received for final demand products, increased 11.3% from a year ago, the highest reading since the record 11.6% in March.

Of that gain, almost 90% came from a 10% increase in final demand energy costs as prices for oil, natural gas and other products soared during the month.

The jump in producer prices was actually 1.1% for the month, but that represents an 11.3% jump year over year.

Don't ask me to explain this. I had insomnia last night and I haven't been good at math since freshman year at college.

I was hoping someone would step in and explain this. Joe Mannix:

Things in the PPI are 1.1% more expensive this month than they were last month.

Things in the PPI are 11.3% more expensive than they were this month last year.

Two different measures, and it indicates that things are expensive as compared to last year, but also that they are more expensive than they were last month. It isn't turning over yet.

...

The release comes one day after the BLS reported that the consumer price index, which measures final-sale prices in the marketplace, surged 9.1%, the highest 12-month gain since November 1981.

In a separate Labor Department report, weekly jobless claims rose to 244,000 for the week ended July 9, the highest number since Nov. 20, 2021. Continuing claims, which run a week behind the headline number, fell to 1.33 million, a decline of 41,000.

While there are signs the jobs market is weakening, the focus has been on inflation.

Energy and food prices have been particularly burdensome, but the June reports show price pressures are broadening.

There were a few optimistic signs in the PPI report -- prices for chicken eggs, for instance, tumbled 30.2%, while iron and steel scrap prices were off 10.4%.

Seeking Alpha notes the "unexpected" nature of these numbers:

June Producer Price Index: +1.1% vs. +0.8% consensus and +0.9% prior (revised from +0.8%).

+11.3% Y/Y vs. +10.4% consensus and +10.9% prior (revised from +10.8%). That marks the largest rise since it hit a record of 11.6% in March 2022.

Meanwhile: Not only is inflation wildly outpacing wage gains, but now wage gains are actually disappearing, as companies cut back on raises.

If you think this all sounds like bad news: the propaganda Enemy Comms media is here to tell you Stupid Proles that no, this is all good news, and you should thank your masters for the -40% increase in your chocolate rations.

47 Does anyone know where I can get access to the drugs that Politico's writers are using? We have inflation that is *not* being driven by high wages and so reducing wages will not help contain the problem - but it will make it harder to handle for individuals. The only possible upshot is that if wages remain constrained then inflation might be able to reverse (as opposed to stabilize at a higher price level) but this is unlikely because of all the other factors.

These kinds of headlines can't be helping their cause.

117 The loathsome election fraudster Marc Elias is concerned about an upcoming Supreme Court case.

You see, the Constitution says that the state legislatures determine election laws for the states. Some fascists believe that means that the Constitution says that state legislatures get to determine election laws for the states, but what the Constitution really meant to say is that state courts and state secretaries of state get to overrule the state legislatures on election law, as happened repeatedly in 2020.

Believing that the state legislatures determine election laws for the states is a "dangerous theory", you see. It's the kind of fascist belief that led to the January 6th "coup".

As Elias puts it:

"When former President Donald Trump launched his post-election assault on democracy, he did not start with violence; he started with courts."

Clearly, we need to block the access of Trump and other fascists to the courts.

Yup, and it's where the stupidity of the political parties really shines. This inflation was pretty clearly coming by Q3 of last year and by February it was clear that we were in it and it was going to be with us for at least a year even with a good, aggressive response. With inflation like this, the next election is a write-off.

Smart people would acknowledge that and exploit the opportunity right now to start fixing the problems and be coming out of the troubles by the time the next-next election comes and ride the wave.

But neither party does this. The Dems don't do it because the solution to the problem isn't palatable to them, and the Reps don't do it because they're in the same boat.

sure. But I don't think that Stallone was a bad Dredd.
The Stallone film played Dredd as a joke, which is how they played all comic book movies in that era.

Unfortunately, this then made it toxic to have comedy in a Dredd film, so the Karl Urban dredd had zero comedy or even comic exaggeration in it.

But Dredd *should* have comedic exaggeration and satire in it! That's the point of the comic.

And some of the comedy in the Stallone movie -- "Eat recycled food. It's good for the environment, and it's okay for you!" -- was great.

174 Parts of that movie are actually good. They had a good basic framework of a movie and some good scenes, but then screwed it all up by adding a funny sidekick, and also doing what a lot of comic book IP exploitation movies did in that era -- jam in all the popular stuff from the comic book into one movie, even though it doesn't make sense.

I even liked Stallone as Dredd, when he wasn't trying to be "Funny," and I liked Armand Assante as his scenery-chewing brother.

Posted by: ace at July 14, 2022 01:57 PM (B3oWe)

It's in that Robocop/Demolition Man zone for theme. And its a poor comic book adaptation as well I think, which at that time wasn't quite as egregious as it can be today. Could have been a funnish dystopian sci-fi movie. Stallone's female partner was very hot to me as well.

177 >>But the original turned it into something like Logan's Run. Judge Dredd on a wilderness adventure.

that's what I mean about stuffing everything that every happened in the comic into one movie. There is a nuclear wilderness outside the walls of megacity one, and i'm sure dredd has been out there a dozen times. (And retired judges have to take "The Long Walk" and spread the law in the wilderness.)

So they jammed this into an already overstuffed movie. Because they were determined to put everything a fan knew from the comic into ONE SINGLE MOVIE.

235 Paul Krugman fears Liquidity Trap deflations, where when the prices of goods and services start to go down due to reasons (generally inability to find loans or capital to pay for them, like in a recession) the consumers as a block start putting off purchases to wait until the cost comes down, and that the ENTIRE class of consumers then discovers infinite time preference to wait until the cost of everything goes to zero, causing a depression.
He explains that this is the cause of the great depression, the lack of credit to keep the economy going.

The Politico piece smells like a reverse engineering of the liquidity trap concept, but in decreasing real income for consumers, the costs will come down and that will be a good thing for . . . Well, I suppose it will be good thing for the earners who will be able to buy more of the absolutely minimum of things that they are forced to buy to survive, like food, clothing, housing and transportation . . . I suppose because no one else will be able to afford it.

I expect Paul Krugman, that giant brain of his fizzing like Mentos charged coke, to declare that liquidity traps in moderation are a good thing for an overcharged economy.

291 Unfortunately, this then made it toxic to have comedy in a Dredd film, so the Karl Urban dredd had zero comedy or even comic exaggeration in it.
But Dredd *should* have comedic exaggeration and satire in it! That's the point of the comic.
And some of the comedy in the Stallone movie -- "Eat recycled food. It's good for the environment, and it's okay for you!" -- was great.
Posted by: ace at July 14, 2022 02:03 PM (B3oWe)

Just as you pointed out Stallone's being at the point where they went over the top comedy on comic book movies, Urban's Dredd was right at the time of Batman Begins and the Dark Knight so they're going the super serious and grounded route. Probably where you would want it to be is a mix of the two. Hollywood just doesn't seem capable of it. It requires the ability to have fun while taking the material seriously and not treating it as a joke. Even the funny parts.

A lot of things taste different if you aren't going the factory food route. Buying stuff direct from the farm, if it is grass fed, free range etc makes a taste difference and its also fresher generally, unless you keep in the deep freeze for a year. It takes some adjustment to get used to food that has fed itself instead of being feed on a feed lot. Even farmed fish, taste different than line caught.

Save the carton if you think about it.

Its mostly diet, which is passed on to the eggs. Instead of eating one kind of carefully designed food to make them lay more eggs and all be the same, they eat whatever is around them. The meat is much better, too.

Anyone who laughably claims otherwise either is making crap up or has never had farm fresh eggs.
