Daily Tech News 12 July 2022

Top Story

  • Not strictly tech news and the blog has covered this but Sri Lanka just collapsed due to insufficient poop and it was all predicted back in March. (Foreign Policy)

Bubble-dwelling cretins decided to ban the artificial fertilisers essential to feeding the world (which is where Sri Lanka is located) and also to the country's economy, dependent as it is on agricultural exports, insisting that "organic" farming methods would survive, when everybody knows that this is quite literally impossible because there's not enough poop to go around.

Because that's what organic farming runs on. Everyone knew there wasn't enough poop and said so, but Sri Lanka's government insisted it would create that poop.
From the moment the plan was announced, agronomists in Sri Lanka and around the world warned that agricultural yields would fall substantially. The government claimed it would increase the production of manure and other organic fertilizers in place of imported synthetic fertilizers. But there was no conceivable way the nation could produce enough fertilizer domestically to make up for the shortfall.
    They're just getting warmed up:
While the proximate cause of Sri Lanka's humanitarian crisis was a bungled attempt to manage its economic fallout from the global pandemic, at the bottom of the political problem was a math problem and at the bottom of the math problem was an ideological problem—or, more accurately, a global ideological movement that is innumerate and unscientific by design, promoting fuzzy and poorly specified claims about the possibilities of alternative food production methods and systems to obfuscate the relatively simple biophysical relationships that govern what goes in; what comes out; and the economic, social, and political outcomes that any agricultural system can produce, whether on a regional, national, or global scale.
"Organic" produce is food for the privileged (and indoctrinated) few. It is completely untenable as a substitute for modern scientific farming and everyone knew that.

But well-funded Western advocacy groups kept pushing for it - keep pushing for it - regardless, as we see right now in the Netherlands.

13 And, no, sadly, not everyone knows about modern scientific farming. GMOs are supposedly bad, yet every morsel you put in your mouth is, one way or another, a GMO and has been for about 6000 years. You can’t raise corn, for example, without massive human intervention, yet companies slap “Non-GMO” labels on corn products and much else besides because people in affluent societies such as ours turn utterly stupid in regards to food.

Rice grows in water - paddy fields - so were they flooding the rice fields with poop water? I wouldn't want to then have to wade in that lot. Typhoid and all sorts of other nasty diseases that way.

22 Modern scientific farming can and should adopt concepts from organic gardening like maintaining healthy soil life (worms, microbes, microrhizal fungi, etc.) Helping to grow better crops while minimizing the synthetic or simply exogeneous inputs to the system is just plain good economics. Pretending you can do that right out of the gate by simply not using synthetic products is utterly stupid. Let's not even get into how half the products used in so called "organic farming" are actually synthetic chemicals, only "nice" synthetic chemicals that some prick with a laptop decided are nice.

34 I laugh at “organic” products on food shelves anyway. I like paying, say, 75 cents for a can of kidney beans, not $2 for “organic” kidney beans. It’s a perfectly legal scam and as is said, there’s a sucker born every minute.

I am going to take full advantage of the modern age by eating cheaply produced food like the 75 cent can of kidney beans, and I will even indulge in some evil processed food. And I won’t remotely care if it is LOCAL or not - coffee doesn’t grow here so it has to be imported and that’s okay. The area is too arid for wheat. The apples can come from - wherever. And so on. Just cut my costs and give me food I like that tastes good. And praise be to the farmers and ranchers that make it happen.

Truth to power: "Sustainable", "organic" farming cannot support the current population. You need all them chemicals and shit. You can look at the "farmers to population ratio". The number of people doing the farming to the total.

In the '30s, that was about 1 to 4. One farmer could support about 4 people. By the '70s that number was up to about 1 to 70. Now it's well over 100, maybe double, close to 1 to 140.

The reason for the incredible increase in that ratio is mechanization, chemicals, and science.

You want to go back the '30s, which is what the greenies want to do, you're gonna have to reduce the population greatly, then a whole lot of people are going to have to get their asses to work.

Like I was talking about the old days in the ONT. I laugh at the thought of that.

Tomatoes are interesting. Back in the old days, Rutgers was at one time the most popular variety. Had a majority market of all the tomatoes commercially sold in the US.

But they didn't do good with the modern mechanization and transport. Short shelf life after picking, and couldn't handle mechanical handling and transport.

Commericial tomatoes were bred for longer shelf life and robustness to mechanical handling. Taste was not the priority.

And that's where we are. You want everyone to have tasty tomato? Well, they're gonna have to grow the older varieties themselves.

There are still "Rutgers" around here. But they are a long from the original. Many, many generations of local breeding.

Rugers University, along with Campbells Soup Co, for Ruther's 250th anniversary (founded in 1766), recreated the original Rutger's tomato. Or so they say.

It's called "Rutgers 250". YOu can get the seeds online. It is claimed that's as close as they can get to the original Rutgers, which was dominant in the '40s to the '50s. The original much more acidic balance.

86 >> The speed of light is almost exactly a one foot per nanosecond.

The speed of light is now a define quantity, and has been for decades. The meter is defined in terms of the second and a defined speed of light.

Indeed, as of 2019, with the rejiggering of the SI units, the second is now the only "arbitrary" unit. The kilogram is now defined by fixing Planck's constant to a define value. The "Kibble" or watt-balance is the mechanism for determing mass that way.

The Kelvin is also now defined by fixing Boltzmann's contstant. Everything now is defined in terms of the second.

And you can go beyond that and define every physical constant, and let physical measurement then determine your base units. The only problem is the precision of measuring G, the gravitational constant. Tech does not exist that will allow that to be measured with enough precision to complete the circle.

Another example of the wonders of modern farming and tech to get you nice vegetables and shit at the supermarket. Well, nice enough to keep you alive and fed, so to speak.

Sweet corn, "roastin' ears" in the local vernacular. A while back, there was something about a "corn cooler". Some lady was using a cooler to buy corn. That was mocked.

Well, let me tell you. Sweet corn needs to be cooled. Pick ears of corn in the roastin' ear stage. You need to get the cooled down quick. Ears of corn have the highest respiration rate of just about any common vegetable. [cont]

Now a commercial roastin' ear operation. You have to pick the corn at the correct stage, early in the morning, when temperatures are at their lowest. You load it up on trailers and trucks, packing it together. YOu can't spread 'em out, cause you don't have enough room.

But, due to that high respiration rate, they're gonna generate a hell of a lot of eat. So you get them trailers packed with green ears of corn to the packing shed quick. YOu then flood them with as much cool water as you can. You need to keep them cool and try to keep the temperature at 60F.

Then you pack them in crates. Then you refrigerate them. TO 32F. Corn freezes at 31F. 32G is the ideal temperature. Respiration is killed pretty much there.

Now, when you do that, your shelf life for them roastin' ears is around 4 to 8 days. Again, provided you get them roastin' ears down to 32F.

To do that, you need a hell of a lot of fossil fuel powere equipment.

Those ears of corn in the grocery store? They're put out there right out of the reefered truck that are in the back.

The result is, as close as they can get it, to say picking some ears out of the field, waiting a day, and putting them in the refrigerator.

193 VDH Nails it:
Indeed, when various pollsters recently asked the public what their chief worries were, they found the culprits were the prohibitive price of gasoline, the ruinous effects of hyperinflation, supply chain shortages, the nonexistent southern border, or the escalating violent crime wave—all of which concerns are of apparent little interest to left-wing billionaires.

In other words, the worries of the Antoinette liberal elite—climate change, abortion on demand, transgenderism, strict gun-control—are not those that terrify the middle and lower classes. The latter, for some reason, first want to survive one more day with enough affordable food and energy and to be safe from criminals.

214 The Sri Lanka thing is flat out false and you people should stop repeating it all over the place. What happened is that the government was controlled by a corrupt nepotistic dumbass and his incompetent brother, which caused assorted economic problems meaning they couldn't pay for the fertilizer inputs, so they proclaimed the green policy as a way of covering their own asses and pretending it was all on purpose. It was entirely and totally a cover story to divert from screwups that had been going on for years.

216 At the back of the organic farming shortfalls is something worse than loopy pipe-dreaming about the preferred "natural" method of farming.

The ugly unsaid is a desire to reduce the number of people that can be fed. Climate cultists toss out words like "sustainable". But what they mean, at the end of the day, is to reduce the capacity for population growth. iIf they can't get Malthus to come to us because we keep fixing him with increased food production, they will go an fetch him by breaking that capacity.

They view the ability to expand food production like building a new highway commuter lane, you are just asking for more commuters to fill it up, so better to break the ability get around by car instead.

They want to kill you. That's all there is to it.

How large of a spool would that take?
