They didn't get them in. The outside of the haystack was a thicker mat layer that served to keep the rain and weather off and then the stacks were broken open and fed to the animals in the fields in the winter.

108 I like it, although I can't figure out how they raised those stacks. It is certainly peaceful with the sheep and country homes. But the approaching storm adds an element of fear or danger. It is pleasant but not an idyll.

Millet does amazing things using light to capture a mood. In this painting, the diminished sunlight helps create the sense of change and uncertainty.

If you could send up a few for help and healing for Lauren in what sounds like a pretty dire situation, it would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks.

393 what is the object of stacking hay so high
Posted by: DB at July 18, 2022 10:50 AM (geLO
++++
It lets you climb up for better and more level line of sight to determine if the corn is indeed as high as an elephant's eye. The stacking of hay allowed farmers to determine when the best time for harvesting corn had arrived. If the elephant handlers came through town prior to the completion of hay stacking, the farmers would have to approximate height from ground level, which sometimes led to premature harvesting due to confounding angles.

394 Well speaking of Navy they finally laid the blame for the loss of USS Bon Homme Richard

https://valorguardians.com/blog/?p=127990

But I don't think docking the pay of the CO and XO will really help defray the loss of such an valuable asset.

And Blinken and Sullivan no doubt told Joe, "Boss, you owned those goat-f*ckers!"

in my case, i suspect (but don't know; don't really pay attention to local news) that governor awesome managed to push through his gas tax holiday.

401 Listen I want the economy to recover and inflation to slow or reduce more than I want to bash Biden but I don't want it to happen artificially and have a paper Tiger economy. Hopefully the LIV will see some of the improvement is smoke and mirrors and the pain they already suffered will throw the culprits out,

yeah, well, that $4.80 saved on a tank of gasoline, presuming CA taxes run 40 cents a gallon and the average purchase is 12 gallons, well, that'll maybe buy 1lb of hamburger. Yay!

Posted by: Blacksheep at July 18, 2022 11:04 AM (6mvRv)

423 I was raised farming beef cattle in the 60s-70s. Storing large bundles of hay outside is normal. The outer 4 inches or so will decompose, but the interior hay will remain fresh all fall, winter and spring. That said, the sheep really did a number on those stacks eating round and round as far as they could reach. Smart enough not to go too deep so the stack didn't collapse on them.
