The Morning Rant: The Worsening Crisis of Europe’s Climate Follies

With Russia throttling natural gas supplies to Germany – which foolishly dismantled its own energy producing capabilities in deference to the climate religion – the impact of Germany’s self-imposed crisis is starting to loom large.

Russian Gas Supply Cuts Threaten World's Largest Chemicals Hub [WSJ – 6/29/2022]

Last Thursday, Berlin triggered the second of a three-step emergency gas plan that, in its last step, could cut off gas supplies to some companies.

Industrial giant BASF employs almost 40,000 Germans, and because of the natural gas shortage, it may have to shut down its Ludwigshafen plant, which employees about 1/3 of its employees.

Company executives are doing what was unthinkable just a few months ago: considering how to potentially shut down the complex if gas supplies fall further.

Sure, 13,000 people losing their jobs is bad, but how big a deal is this?

Because BASF and other chemicals companies sit at the beginning of most industrial supply chains, their disruption would reverberate well beyond the sector, threatening Europe's economy at a time of high inflation and slowing growth.

A throttling of BASF's ammonia output, a key ingredient in fertilizers, could exacerbate the world's growing food crisis, analysts say.

More unemployment, supply chain interruptions, and food shortages…that should play well with the proletariat.

In a post of mine last week about the Dutch farmers protest and the Davos elite, I saw this brilliant response: “So we’ve reached the ‘Some of you may have to die, but that’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make!’ stage of elite decadence.”

Sacrifice - Some of You May Have To Die.JPG

The commenter is skeptical, however, that the victims of the green agenda will ever wise up to what their “experts” and elites have inflicted upon them. Maybe, but starvation, poverty, and a cold, dark winter would be very eye opening. The Sri Lankan presidential palace was stormed by civilians two days ago due to the destruction wrought by green polices. Sri Lanka’s economic self-immolation should be a warning, but to western elites it is still an instruction manual.

There are so many foreboding headlines like this one these days.

Germany is rationing hot water and turning off the lights to reduce natural gas consumption [Fortune – 7/08/2022]

“The situation is more than dramatic,” Axel Gedaschko, a German politician and president of GdW, the federal association of German housing, told the FT.

It isn’t just hot water that’s being rationed. In addition to shorter shower times, officials are asking city councils nationwide to turn off traffic lights at night, stop illuminating historic buildings, and go easy on using air conditioners in a bid to conserve electricity, according to the FT.

German winters are very cold and very dark. Politicians convinced German voters that they could dismantle Germany’s old energy network and replace it with energy produced by the flapping of fairy wings. They were successful in dismantling Germany’s ability to produce energy, but they never replaced it with anything but Russian imports. Those politicians have cause for apprehension as a potentially lethal winter approaches.

I once had a co-worker whose doctor had temporarily imposed on him a meatless diet due to some medical condition. When I saw him eating a chicken sandwich one day I asked if he was done with the vegetarian diet. He responded, “No, I’ve just decided that chicken is a vegetable.”

Eurocrats are about to use that same logic in redefining “sustainable” energy.

As Europe’s ruling class realizes just how catastrophic their green energy policies are, but still wanting to stay obedient to the Sustainable Organic Church of the Carbon Apocalypse, they are now trying to re-classify traditional energy sources as being compliant with environmental sharia.

EU lawmakers back natural gas, nuclear energy as sustainable [AP – 7/06/2022]

The green labeling system from the European Commission defines what qualifies as an investment in sustainable energy. Under certain conditions, gas and nuclear energy will now be part of the mix, making it easier for private investors to inject money into both.

The pampered princelings in Brussels seem to be assessing their self-imposed energy crisis, and starting to realize that millions of cold, starving commoners are much more of a threat to their reign than are a handful of environmentalists throwing a public tantrum.

The funny thing - and it is funny, albeit in a dark way - nuclear energy is actually sustainable and so is gas in a lot of circumstances. The crisis is forcing them to acknowledge what a whole lot of people have been saying for a long time, but it wasn't popular to say those things.

And, look, I think you’re going to see — for example, everybody talks about how Russia has control over the energy supply that Europe absorbs. Well, guess what? And yes, while young people (non home schooled ones at least) have been brainwashed into believing in climate doom, they are reachable. You can list a good dozen high level, major names making absolute predictions about ice levels, water levels, disasters etc that never came true.

The opposite.
Monopoly: One supplier
Monopsony: One buyer

If you have only one customer (or one customer is well over half of your revenue), then your business depends on that customer. You can't afford to cut him off if you don't like the terms, and you will die if he cuts you off.

He gets one thing right:

The Biden administration continues to make it difficult to finance long-term investments in natural gas and oil.

and one thing very, very wrong:

Nor does he [Biden] seem to find a way to restore the Iran nuclear deal - a move that would bring a massive influx of new oil supplies to the global market and certainly stabilize the price. I understand that there are valid objections and concerns about all of these policies - but the priority must be to defeat Putin.

I think that keeping Iran from getting a nuclear bomb and not legitimizing Iranian terrorism (as Iran is demanding) is more important than "defeating Putin". Sorry.

We have, but it's even slightly beyond that. We're reached a period where the lies are both universal *and* elaborate, while the truth remains relatively straightforward. This increases the risks of truth-telling dramatically, because you can do so directly and easily while they have to build all of these complex and elaborate constructions to try to counter it with more lies.

It's the precise reason, for what it's worth, why the left can't meme. Their memes are all too long and wordy because their obfuscations are extremely complicated and highly dependent on other obfuscations, whereas the truth can cut like a knife in a couple of words. It's why the right *can* meme.

96 So here's the real issue: Utilities make money on capital investments and don't make money on operating expenses. Solar panels have high capex (= return on investment) and very low opex. Gas turbines have low capex and high opex. The total all-in cost of the gas turbine is lower, but the utility makes less money on it than it makes on the solar panel or the wind farm. So the utilities have a powerful incentive to build the renewables.

The check and balance is supposed to be at the Public Utility Commission (or whatever it's called in your state), and sometimes there's input from a public advocate. They are supposed to look out for the customer's interest. When those institutions are captured by the Greens, there is no honest broker to stop the nonsense. That is where we have to fight.

168 >>>When they can't get enough CNG in Europe fast enough, they will vote to call coal green.

As a design project, we prepared designs for a fuel cell powered car that used steam reforming of petroleum to produce hydrogen for the hydrogen fuel cells, which in turn produced electricity for electric motors to drive the cars.

As you can imagine with any power conversion technologies, there are a lot of losses in the process of conversion and transmission, which cannot be compensated (enough) for by extravagant power recapture technologies such as using the kinetic energy of the vehicle to regenerate electricity.

In the end, IIRC, nobody could approach conventional modern ICE/diesel efficiencies, using the petro right at the source, even using the high efficiency fuel cell tech.

You have to get really clean hydrogen cheaply to make such tech economically feasible, and then it is a storage and safety nightmare.

Too many get stuck on the pie in the sky idea of cars burning hydrogen and producing heat and water vapor to ever get to the really hard thinking part of how exactly such projects might be accomplished. That is the story of ALL green power ideas.

Chavez, and then Maduro encouraged China to spend all kinds of money building new factories, etc, inside Venezuela, and the Chinese were excited to have a foothold in South America. Except then Venezuelan gangs (likely parts of the Venezuelan Army since they've all gone rogue) stole all of the new equipment out of the new factories and sold it for scrap, and now they all sit there abandoned and rotting. And Maduro sends the Chinese a tanker full of tar every now and then and figures it'll all be good.

Those radioactive materials are going to decay and produce energy regardless of whether we use them or not. If we wait a thousand years (or even a hundred years), that's a significant loss in usable energy. Why NOT try to use them now? While they still have enough radioactive material to do us good?

At a bible discussion group yesterday I asked the group how many had ever even heard the term ESG. Out of 20, only 2 had ever heard the term and wanted to know what it meant.

After learning more about it, they were aghast. They had no idea of the ramifications and were visibly shocked at the insidiousness of the entire concept and how it has laid hold of the most basic elements inside out economy and capital markets.

The point of the discussion was to encourage folks to take care of themselves spiritually so as to be ready and able to maintain their faith during dark times such as those most of us here see coming.

@rhomboid, the USSR lasted 80 years based on a ridiculous concept of how economics worked. A long time can be a long time. These things are gradual. I think California's model will, in the long run, result in much unnecessary misery in California, but eventually it will self-correct.

238 Trump's energy policies were among the most important of his excellent successful policies (but to clarify, they were mostly just common sense - it's just he was the first boss in a long time to follow it). They "hurt" Russia in the sense of reducing their oil earnings.

But Russia could easily have afforded this war, regardless. "Afford" completely depends on how important something is, and how much the public supports/will tolerate it, and/or how much the public can influence the policy. No reason to think lower oil revenues would have changed Moscow's calculations on what Ukraine's military status means, which is the basis for the whole thing.

And artillery is a normal big part of every large conventional war in modern history, and a disproportionate part of Russian ground warfare in modern times.

It's not true in every case, of course, but most of the time traffic light and street light power is virtually free. Large generators often can't be shut down overnight and then be available the next day -- they have to keep running. So the power is there whether you want it or not in order to ensure that is there the next day when you really need it. Now, if your power comes from solar panels, that's obviously not true.

He said that he and the other jurors started laughing because they couldn't believe they were seeing this , and spouse said to me as I was passing through the room, "He must have dementia." I said either that or it was a really clever way to get out of serving on a jury. If spouse doesnt get picked today he's free and doesn't have to serve on the case. He hasn't been questioned yet.

Highly efficient, and used across the former Eastern Bloc.

Big power plants are only one-third efficient - you put big power plants into your cities, and you can use the waste heat from the power plants to provide hot water and most of your heating needs, basically for free.

The slight problem is that it means you have big polluting power plants in your cities.

Community-scale steam. Some places in the US have this, too. Cornell University in NY is one such place. They have a power plant and it produces a lot of waste heat. They pump it through buried pipes to heat a bunch of buildings and sidewalks. No shoveling snow through the main campus and they don't have to pay for heat.

District heating and cooling is actually a LOT more efficient than having lots of smaller units spread about. Manhattan has one of the largest steam systems in the world, which uses waste heat in addition to boiling water on purpose to make steam. Without it it, if every building had to have its own furnace, there would be a lot more gas and heating oil burned, a lot more expensively.

330 The battle of Kyiv was part of the Kyiv offensive in the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine for control of Kyiv, the capital city of Ukraine, and surrounding districts. The combatants were elements of the Russian Armed Forces and Ukrainian Ground Forces. The battle lasted from 25 February 2022 to 2 April 2022 and ended with the withdrawal of Russian forces.

Initially, Russian forces captured key areas to the north and west of Kyiv, leading to international speculation of the city's imminent fall. However, stiff Ukrainian resistance sapped the momentum. Poor Russian logistics and tactical decisions helped the defenders to thwart efforts at encirclement, and, after a month of protracted fighting, Ukrainian forces mounted successful counterattacks. Russians began to withdraw on 29 March; on 2 April, the Ukrainian authorities declared that Kyiv and its surrounding province were again under Ukrainian control.

Their dicking around in Ukraine and diplomatic overtures to each other suggest there is some possibility to it. They likely see Russia as a threat given Russia's historical aims in the region and so could be pulled into a fight should Poland get into a war with Russia. Also possible that they could be diplomatically neutralized or divided against each other (as has been normal for some time) if Russia were to back one of them.

Allegedly the Russians spent millions for years on getting local Ukrainian officials to support the invasion. The FSB officers handling the money simply pocketed it, since they figured Russia would never actually invade. They are allegedly in prison now.

Russia didn't have to use many people to do that. Likewise they didn't have enough people to hold it when Ukraine started redirecting troops there, so they retreated without giving battle. The majority of troops on both sides has from the beginning been in the east. To all appearances Ukraine was using weaker troops at other points on their borders, which is why they got rolled so easily.

Nucular splosion is a nucular splosion. I suppose it would be helpful in destroying ports and naval facilities.

But, IIRC, these were supposed to be banned under one of the nuclear non-proliferation treaties, although I'd imagine the U.S. retains these capabilities, but may not use such capabilities currently.

Getting people to redirect troops from one area to another over a false attack is an effective strategy. It's hard to say whether Ukraine ended up redirecting many troops and the situation in the east didn't appear to be much affected by it ultimately, but that has no bearing on whether the attack was a feint.

Could Russia have taken Kiev by simply using more troops there and launching an assault? Yes. Did they? No. We can speculate as to the reasons.

One theory is that the weapon could be detonated near the entrance to a coastal port city and the ensuing tsunami would destroy everything leaving behind a massive nuclear nuclear mess for centuries.

The Russian offensive near Kiev on paper makes Ukraine's forces look ridiculous because they collapsed to a smaller force. I think more likely, Russia didn't expect to make such rapid headway and so was not positioned to capitalize on it. As weeks passed it became clear Russia had not decided to meaningfully reinforce the position to try and take Kiev.

In the case of expecting the Ukrainian government to collapse, it would actually make more sense to reduce forces nearby the main body of the Ukrainian army and focus on spreading out across the country and Kiev in particular.

434 When does Putin bring in his Asian forces?

Already done.

Somebody did an analysis of where the Russian KIAs were from, using social media. They identified several thousand KIAs.

Fewer than 10 from Moscow, a couple of dozen from St. Petersburg, and lots and lots of Chechens and Buryats (Mongols), plus Russians from rural areas and small cities.

One of the reasons why Putin is hesitant to go on a full war footing is that there are huge inequities on who gets drafted into the Russian army. Almost no one from the big cities serves.

Again, the plan was to take the airport and hold it, and wait for the cavalry to arrive in the form of more flights of Russians in, and the 40-mile column; it's not unlike what American paratroopers did on D-Day.

Their conduct thus far indicates very low casualty tolerance. No direct assaults, only artillerly and encirclements. Everyone knows the Russian stereotypes about their willingness to take losses in exchange for victory, but that is not on display here. Natural gas (methane) is 80% hydrogen and 20% carbon. It can be used in dual-cycle gas turbine / steam turbine electric power plants that are about 60% thermal efficiency as opposed to previous generation power plants that are about 40% efficient. And methane burns clean. As fossil fuels go, it's as green as it gets.

The torpedo would run aground. Galveston Bay is really shallow, and the dredged ship channel up to the Port of Houston is really narrow. In order for two ships to pass each other going the opposite direction, they have to "play chicken" and then at the last minute swerve and ride each other's wakes.

To account for the change, they blamed the Africans for having missed the ability "to go out their front door and pick fruit off the trees and hunt prey", so now they are "escaping".

Apparently, during COVID, the Chinese would turn away "non-Chinese" from various venues like restaurants. Black Africans got the worst of it as they couldn't disguise their "non-Chinese" status.

Russian theory regarding paratroopers is quite a different from ours. Theirs are elite forces, whereas we would go for volume and basically use it as an unconventional way to deploy infantry. The initial investment is small and they needn't hinge their overall plan on it. Overall they're just not all that well set up for massive followthrough on taking an airport

From a blog in 2019v
"There are other problems. Optimistically, Russia’s military transport aviation (VTA) is at best able to deliver between one and two regiments in a sortie. The aviation park of Il-76 heavy transports is simply not big enough for serious airborne operations, and certainly not in a contested environment. "

573 Whatever you think of Fox News, if Hunter and Ashley were serious, they'd go on Tucker.

Tucker would absolutely air it, and ratings are the reason Fox keeps Tucker around.

574 Again, I didn't say it was a GOOD plan.

If the Russians were expecting Ukraine to collapse, why not fight the eastern forces directly? They've been fighting each other for 8 years, only the West would think that the Ukrainians were unblooded and going to collapse so easily.

575 I'm ashamed to say I did not, though I put it up here on one of CBD's Food Threads.

I'm accumulating bottles for October right now. Five should do it...maybe.

Huh, I could have sworn it was in the book. Maybe I just saw it here on a thread and copied it.

576 That has nothing to do with it being electric. That's because its connected to the internet. So are a lot of ICE cars.

577 Other than pride there's no reason to think that the Russians were as unfamiliar with the Ukrainians as we were.

578 Dunno... every video I see with Hunter in it he's tugging his pug. Like, every time. And not just one or two tugs either. Repetitive tugging. Like an Olympic warm up.

579 When I go to my local ATM to pick up a quick $40 or so, I peek inside the bank lobby.
Lot and lots of Asians at the teller windows withdrawing huge sums, stacks and stacks of $100s.

Did you hear about the little old Chinese lady at the bank? She went to the teller and exchanged Yuan for dollars. When she got her money she exclaimed "Hey, last time I here I get one huned dollah for my yuan, now you onry give me fifty dollah for the same amount of yuan. Why the diffelence?"" The teller looks at her, shrugs and says "Fluctuations". She answers back "Oh yeah, well Fluck you white people too!"

Tucker goes as far as management allows, but he obeys the rules. Notice that he's never mentioned "2000 Mules." He'll sometimes say there were some problems with the election, but that's where he stops.

I appreciate that he pushes it as far as he can without getting fired, but if his managers told him to ignore a juicy revelation about Biden, that's what he would do.

My guess is that they wanted to pull off something like we did in Iraq for reasons of prestige.

They've been fighting each other for 8 years, only the West would think that the Ukrainians were unblooded and going to collapse so easily.

I'll remind you that the almost universal expectation from every intelligence agency was a rapid Uke collapse.

583 Let us not forget the link between ammonia production and urea.

Urea is the primary component in that DEF stuff that is required on all diesel exhaust now. With the interlocks, diesel trucks, tractors, etc. cannot operate, unless the DEF is a ailable to treat the exhaust stream.

No ammonia, no urea, no fertilizer, no diesels..

A perfect world, I guess.

584 I would really be surprised if the Germans actually began to revolt like the Dutch, French, and other countries have over these topics.
I have a colleague in Berlin who's family business has been around since 1864. He told me that "all of the German men died in WWII, the rest emigrated..."
I do not know how true it is; however, the amount of pacifism I have seen since my travels on business started in 1999 do seem to show it in one way or another.
They may have a nice tank, but you need ready men to employ and defeat the enemy.

585 It's easy to have unrealistic, insane ideas about how the world works when you have no authority. However, they're now in charge, and they're running into reality. Don't celebrate this isn't a win for the right. It's just nature doing what it does. We're still losers, and will remain so as long as we have the leadership we currently have.

This is not a subject of debate, or confusion. It has been known for over a decade. Greens just wouldn't accept the science.
