EMT 07/09/22 - Why the Gun is Civilization.

Written maybe a decade ago - the original post seems to be lost in time, but it's always a good time to recall the concise words from Marco Kloos (pronounced "close") on why the 2nd amendment is so fundamental to the preservation of our civilized society.

Why the Gun is Civilization:
- By Marko Kloos

Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that’s it.

In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.

When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force. You have to use reason and try to persuade me, because I have a way to negate your threat or employment of force. The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman on equal footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on equal footing with a 19-year old gangbanger, and a single gay guy on equal footing with a carload of drunk guys with baseball bats. The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender.

There are plenty of people who consider the gun as the source of bad force equations. These are the people who think that we’d be more civilized if all guns were removed from society, because a firearm makes it easier for a mugger to do his job. That, of course, is only true if the mugger’s potential victims are mostly disarmed either by choice or by legislative fiat – it has no validity when most of a mugger’s potential marks are armed. People who argue for the banning of arms ask for automatic rule by the young, the strong, and the many, and that’s the exact opposite of a civilized society. A mugger, even an armed one, can only make a successful living in a society where the state has granted him a force monopoly.

Then there’s the argument that the gun makes confrontations lethal that otherwise would only result in injury. This argument is fallacious in several ways. Without guns involved, confrontations are won by the physically superior party inflicting overwhelming injury on the loser. People who think that fists, bats, sticks, or stones don’t constitute lethal force watch too much TV, where people take beatings and come out of it with a bloody lip at worst. The fact that the gun makes lethal force easier works solely in favor of the weaker defender, not the stronger attacker. If both are armed, the field is level. The gun is the only weapon that’s as lethal in the hands of an octogenarian as it is in the hands of a weightlifter. It simply wouldn’t work as well as a force equalizer if it wasn’t both lethal and easily employable.

When I carry a gun, I don’t do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I’m looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don’t carry it because I’m afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn’t limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force. It removes force from the equation … and that’s why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

9 Good re-post, Krak!

Willowed: Wolfus, about your kitty. My SIL got a new one 2 years ago. She, the kitty, loved to be naughty and especially bitey.
My wife Gurgled a few sites on the intertubes about info on how mother cats teach their kids and what you can do.

Worked great. We think that even though she was weaned, she had not been with the mother and siblings long enough to learn proper behavior.

Bruce, I think that's pretty much the deal with Stirling, except that he was with his siblings at the shelter all along. But apparently Mom Cat died fairly early. She certainly taught him about hunting behavior, and he's not rough or inclined to bite. It's just this "I want milk, Mom!" behavior. I'll do some research.

59 Interesting ideas bubbling up out of Baltimore after the bat wielding driver who went after the Squeegee Kid at the busiest intersection in the city during rush hour was shot dead by a Squeegee Kid.

Apparently, if an individual is approached by a bat wielding person on public streets it is a clear case of self defense to whip out your illegal handgun, and instead of retreating in any of the directions available to you, simply cap the bat holder's ass right then and there. And once you do this, there are many who will declare this as a clear case of self defense, and a good shoot.

So glad to see so many Baltimorons suddenly embracing the concept of carrying for self defense.

It's a real change from 'Guns are evil, and should be destroyed'.

88 ...The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender.

But when it is *multiple attackers*, the importance of the size of your magazines becomes important.

And an octogenarian ain't gonna be all that accurate neither.

Now for the main thrust, quoting Heinlein:

An armed society is a polite society.

Interestingly, using DDG for that sentence, the first 4-5 'hits' are attempts to debunk Heinlein's argument. Including the first hit piece by Psychology Today.

181 Thanks for the quote from Marko Kloos. I first knew of him from a manual typewriter forum when he was working on his first military sci-fi book. As I recall, that's when he wrote this piece. He emigrated from Germany after serving in their armed forces and lived in northern New England with his wife and family. Even then, his comments were well written and reasoned. I'm so pleased he has been able to follow his dreams.

BTW, I don't think he uses a typewriter anymore. His book have been successful and production demands require a faster output. Too bad. I think the manual typewriter is an excellent first draft tool.

Less than an hour after another arrest had been made at that intersection for a man with a gun.

Not exactly the same thing, but Mama Dog teaching the younguns is why a "choke" chain works so well in certain aspects of training dogs.

It simulates Mom giving the kiddo a quick nip on the neck to correct its behavior. The "choke" chain doesn't hurt the dog at all if used properly.
Similar results can be achieved by giving the pup/dog a quick pinch on the back of the neck.

This is why 'bots exist. Because the true number of rabble is low single digit. Most people are too involved in their own lives to waste on shouting down judges and making asses of them selves.

Twitter needed to create a perception of 51% or greater.

There was some historical observations about percentages of Muslims in a community to be able to completely turn it around and have it observe sharia. Wasn't much. Even the American Revolution had a small minority fed up with England and went up against a population just as large or larger who were Tories and didn't mind the King. Yet the majority didn't care.

263 Not exactly the same thing, but Mama Dog teaching the younguns is why a "choke" chain works so well in certain aspects of training dogs.

It simulates Mom giving the kiddo a quick nip on the neck to correct its behavior. The "choke" chain doesn't hurt the dog at all if used properly.
Similar results can be achieved by giving the pup/dog a quick pinch on the back of the neck.

I imagine a similar dynamic is at work when you pick up a cat by the loose skin behind the neck. That's how mommy kittehs move them around.

My dad showed my how to calm a cat by doing that - you don't even have to pick them up, the sensation is very familiar to them. Some will just go limp.

The state is tottering, on the brink of collapse. A lot of people who wanted an uprising (including commenters here) are nothing thinking things through.

Once that line is crossed, it cannot be uncrossed and normal people understand on a visceral level that this is not to be done lightly.

History shows us that people have to be pushed into rebellion. Those societies that are more prone to such uprisings tend to be less stable overall.

330 History shows us that people have to be pushed into rebellion. Those societies that are more prone to such uprisings tend to be less stable overall.

What about nudging, nudging is OK, right?

Stable civilizations do NOT seem to be the historical state of affairs!

The problem is that it's not "their system", it's everyone's system. So we're all f*cked.

345 Marko Kloos books are one of my guilty pleasures, I think that I’ve read every one he’s written. They are military science fiction, with great characters and great action.

347 Yes the 2nd Amendment apparently gives all Amercans the ability to easily kill others so easily. And to rein in a tyrannical government we also should be fighting for our right to possess RPGs and IEDs
Posted by: Paul at July 09, 2022 08:58 AM (vDqIW

And yet, except for criminals who don't obey the law anyway and the rare nutjob who passed under the radar and decided to get their fifteen minutes of fame by shooting up a school or parade, there is no mayhem in the streets from law abiding citizens having wild west shoot outs.

IED's are fairly easy to make, if one were so inclined.

358 It appears after a quick look at Markus Kloos's twitter posts, that he has a severe case of TDS. He also removed his novel from Hugo award consideration in 2015 after "Sad Puppies" campaign voted for it, as they were evil right wingers.
